Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the “revolting children” who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.
Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely Smooth sailing, however. The school’s mean Headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!
Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, Matilda Jr. is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

“I love musicals because you can express your feelings not only by words but also by actions and dancing. Although I might be a bit of an introvert, musicals can push me outside of my comfort zone and let me experience a new activity. In my opinion, musicals aren’t just about the leads, it’s about working together and creating a masterpiece with everyone’s effort put into it. I love being in the musical and I hope I can do it again.”
Working on Matilda Jr. at Danebank has been an exciting and rewarding opportunity for all. We have been privileged to work alongside talented and enthusiastic students who have accepted every challenge in the making of the show. From a directorial perspective, the cast brought such energy and heart to every rehearsal, and hearing them grow more confident and polished with each number and each rehearsal was a total delight. It was also wonderful to see students contributing their ideas to develop characters and use their initiative to enhance the direction, singing and choreography in rehearsals. We were very lucky to have professional musical performer, Des Flannagan (‘Cats,’ ‘Moulin Rouge,’ ‘The Producers,’ West Side Story,’ ‘The Beautiful Game,’ ‘One Day in September.’), join us for a masterclass in the rehearsal process to work with our cast.
Our musical band saw talented student musicians collaborate with industry professionals to learn 51 different musical items, this is about 10x more musical repertoire than any other Danebank ensemble completes within a year, so it is an amazing achievement and area of so much growth for our talented student instrumentalists. We are also so lucky to be supported by an amazing team of executive and teaching and operational staff at Danebank, many of whom stepped out of their usual roles to create costumes, sell tickets, operate candy stores, run backstage crews, build sets and be there to support our girls on the night. This process has taught all involved the importance of collaboration and teamwork and we could not be more proud of our students and our show. It is a true team triumph!
