EXCELLENCE IN VETERINARY COMPOUNDING™ Your SOURCE for all immobilization and sedation products. NexGen is the industry leader in producing the highest quality formulations coupled with unparalleled customer service. We offer a complete toolkit of single and combination preparations developed to meet the specific animal management scenarios of deer ranchers and wildlife handlers.
MK – Our MK Kit was developed to immobilize a broad range of exotic animal species. It’s an excellent choice for a broad range of field work offering smooth induction and quick recovery times. It’s recommended for use on fawns and smaller does.
MK Kit
MK2™ - Our MK2™ Kit contains a higher concentration of medetomidine and ketamine than the MK formulation and thus provides longer and deeper sedation, extended working time and quick recovery. It’s recommended for larger-bodied white-tailed deer and bucks (as well as other large species).
MK2™ Kit
MKB™ - Our MKB™ Kit builds on our MK combinations by adding butorphanol. The MKB™ formulation offers smooth induction with faster reversal times than the MK formulation due to a lower concentration of ketamine. It’s recommended for free range capture scenarios where there is a risk of losing the animal post-injection.

RULES FOR ANIMAL CAPTURE By: NexGen Pharmaceuticals
I
n the operative sense, the word “capture” as it relates to wildlife species can reference many methods, from snares and traps to chemical immobilization. In some cases, manual methods (e.g., snares, traps, etc.) precede chemical immobilization events, as these can facilitate enough access to difficult or elusive species for chemical immobilization, after which various procedures may be performed. Most wild animals will act defensively when restrained in any kind of a trap, and typically suffer a far greater deal of stress than when they are manually injected or remotely darted with immobilizing agents only. The additional stress increases the risk of various complications, such as capture myopathy, aspiration, shock and cardiac arrest. Large, difficult-to-handle animals such as deer and elk will typically need to be sedated for capture, transfer or for procedures, whether in the field or on a farm. Depending upon the setting, immobilizing agents may be delivered by hand via pole syringe, or by using a dart fired from a capture gun.
It essential for anyone involved in the capture to be familiar with animal handling and immobilization techniques, whether they will be immobilizing the animal, handling the animal or serving in a support role. Commonly-accepted rules or guidelines for animal capture via chemical immobilization are indispensible when planning a capture event, regardless of the venue. RULE #1 The first involves planning. This not only means having experienced parties
who are familiar with their roles and the proper equipment at the ready, but anticipating things that could go wrong during the capture event. The available literature suggests that even the most experienced personnel take time to visualize the entire process beforehand, as well as making a visual assessment of the site of capture ahead of time, if possible. Preparing for contingencies and emergencies (such as surgical complications) and having the proper equipment to handle these are also a part of this process. RULE #2 The second rule addresses setting aside enough time for the capture. Indeed, most of the work that goes into the treatment and handling of wild species can be attributed to the capture process itself, regardless of the methods used. While it may be easy to visualize a flawless capture event that comes off in record time, the reality is that it can often take awhile to capture an animal, perform the necessary procedures and monitor the animal’s recovery. Many resources recommend planning capture events as early in the day as possible, in order to ensure a sufficient amount of daylight to work with. RULE #3 The third rule centers around the dosing of captured animals. The most experienced experts in the field suggest dosing higher when in doubt, since it is often impossible to precisely calculate an animal’s weight prior to the capture event. It is very easy for an underdosed animal to seriously injure itself or a human. In the field, an underdosed animal that escapes may die from the residual effects of a drug or from infection due to injuries incurred as a result of having been underdosed.
Considering the high therapeutic index of the immobilizing drugs and drug formulations now available, the accidental overdosing of animals resulting in mortality is exceedingly rare, so calculating higher is generally a safer bet. Experts in animal capture typically recommend doses ranging from 20% to 25% higher than normal when capturing a highly-stressed animal. RULE #4 Providing adequate care and posttreatment of the immobilized animal is the fourth rule for animal capture. A substantial amount of preparation and expense goes into capture events, which makes it doubly unfortunate when an animal suffers complications or is lost due to a lack of postoperative care. Once the main procedure has been finished, it isn’t over yet. Extra attention paid to the animal during the recovery phase of anesthesia can go a long way toward avoiding postoperative complications and ensuring that the animal fully recovers. RULE #5 The fifth and final rule involves recordkeeping. This is a must, particularly when using immobilizing agents. In the U.S., the possession and use of drugs used to capture wildlife is governed by both federal and state regulations. All drugs currently used to sedate or immobilize wild animals are prescription drugs and must be used by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. As such, it is for your own protection as well as peace of mind that you keep records of every capture event involving chemical immobilization.

DEER FARMING
BENEFITTED BY A WOMEN’S TOUCH By: Gail Veley • Sponsored by KALA
T
here is a peacefulness felt inside Mary Ann Hall when she’s outside with her deer. Pitching alfalfa hay to her eager takers as the sun brings warmth to the day, fills her soul with gratitude for the opportunity to raise deer At Solid Rock Whitetails, the farm she has operated along with her fiancé and KALA Chairman Tony Maddox and stepson Luke in Winchester (central) Kentucky, since 2017. Most days, Hall feels more satisfaction raising whitetails than she typically feels at her full-time job as a physician’s assistant. Yet, in her role on the farm, everything she has learned and done as a P.A. enables her to diagnose, administer I.V.’s, give shots, suture velvet, cast a broken leg, listen to wheezing or crackles in lungs and find appropriate correlating human-to-animal medications to treat virtually every situation that comes up with their deer.
tend to the strong ones. We are the mothering ones. The deer follow me around. They don’t follow Tony around.”
Pulling on scrubs five days a week and seeing to the well-being of human patients takes an interesting turn when Hall’s white coat and earrings come off and the jeans and muddy boots go on. And it isn’t just her vast medical background that in her life of 46 years now comes intuitively and naturally, it’s her ability to bring the devoted and loving touch of a woman to raising deer. “Women bring a very caring, patient and nurturing aspect,” Hall said. “Men
“Women can be just as impactful as males as long as the passion in there,” Hall added. Both women agree that the willingness to perhaps work harder than you have ever worked in your entire life, is also a necessity when it comes to running a family-owned and operated deer farm. There isn’t one job that either woman has ever shied away from whether it be putting up a fence, record keeping, feeding, paperwork, financials, sending bills or gathering

Fawning season brings an expected increase in the commitment that she, Tony and Luke have for their farm, but all throughout the night when fawns first arrive, it’s Hall who is preparing and feeding bottles to any newborn that might need one. Sharing her strong protective mothering instincts for fawns is Mitzi Holland, who along with her husband Jason and son Jack have operated Barren River Whitetails in Gamaliel (south central), Kentucky since 2018. “We also raise cattle, but I’ve never felt like they were mine,” Holland said. “But with the deer I do feel like they are mine. People assume with agriculture it’s the male who’s running everything but that’s not always the case. Successful farms have the strong presence of women.”
Mitzi Holland
Mary Ann Hall permits. While they are grateful for the fortitude that deer farming has required of them, they are also grateful for the life lessons it has taught their children. “First of all, your children learn they are responsible for a life,” Holland said. “They witness the cycle of life, and they learn responsibility and that the deer are not going to make it without you. How that will shape them as an adult is amazing. To realize nothing is free and easy and to not have a sense of entitlement and to know that hard work pays off.” In addition, Hall believes “the biggest benefit is teaching them responsibility and to have a good management and work ethic. We have a lot invested and when we lose an animal, it hurts us all.” “I have a new respect for deer and a new perspective on how hard life is to live in the wild,” Hall said. “And in knowing how important women can be to the cervid industry, I’m very glad that Mitzi and I, along with so many others, can be a vital part of it.”

EHD SHOWING A PRESENCE WITHIN NEW YORK STATE BORDERS
N
By: Gail Veley • Sponsored by NYDEFA
ew York deer farmers would be wise to do a risk assessment to determine their whitetail deer herd’s susceptibility to contracting EHD (as well as the related virus Blue Tongue.) With EHD having been confirmed this year in wild populations of whitetail deer in New York, a collective concern over what potential steps to take next is on the minds of many deer farmers, said New York Deer and Elk Association President Dave Vanderzee. Although EHD was typically thought of as a disease only affecting southern states, changing weather patterns, above normal rainfall, strong winds and higher air masses in the past year carried the gnat-like culprit for EHD, the Culicoides midge fly, over the Adirondack Mountain range and into New York where it could begin to substantially affect deer farmers. To date, there is no cure for the 10 known strains of EHD, and no treatment plan for wild deer.
edema, swollen eyelids, neck or tongue and the internal drive to stay close to and drink water. Although EHD is a common concern year-round in temperate southern states such as Florida and Louisiana, it was not seen until recently as a threat to whitetail deer living as far north as New York. Yet unlike southern states, the midge fly has a short-lived life span in New York, where the first annual October or November frost kills them off.
A concentration of sick wild deer found living along the Hudson River in Ulster County in late July, tested positive for EHD Strain 6, according to Kevin Hynes, Wildlife Disease Biologist with The New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Wildlife staff and officers within the department are keeping a vigilant watch in an effort to continue EHD testing and responding to reports of sick deer.
According to website information provided through The New York Department of Agriculture and Markets, New York contains 7,342 square miles of inland waters as well as portions of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Seventeen major watersheds provide the venue for more than 4,000 lakes, ponds and 70,000 miles of streams, all of which could potentially provide a home to the midge fly. This is where the risk assessment for your deer farm comes into play.
Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) affects the endothelium or the lining of the blood vessels, causing hemorrhagic and respiratory distress in addition to ulcers on the tongue, nasal cavity and stomach. Clinical signs appear in one to three days and include reduced appetite, weakness, a loss of the fear of humans, fever,
“Deer farmers should pull out soil and water maps available through The New York Division of Soil and Water and take a detailed look at them,” Vanderzee said. According to what is found, informed decisions could be made regarding vaccines, he explained. And while other
However, this advantage does only so much in staving off a disease that’s most often fatal to whitetail who fall prey to the bite of the Culicoides midge fly who lives, breeds and thrives along muddy riverbanks or swampy areas. Those deer that do survive show hoof abnormalities in later months. Adding an EHD vaccine program to a New York deer farmer’s maintenance and care protocol may be worthwhile, depending on the lay of your land and where you keep your deer, Vanderzee emphasized.
preventative measures such as installing insecticide misters or putting up shade cloth on existing fences to block the flight of the Culicoides (whose flight trajectory is a mere three feet from the ground), the vaccine might provide the best overall protection, he added, placing perhaps an additional unwelcomed burden and expense upon New York deer farmers. Farmers who choose to vaccinate must follow strict guidelines including deciding which of the 10 strains of EHD to vaccinate for, and subsequently have it shipped to the veterinarian on file or associated with your deer farm. An initial vaccine must be followed by a booster shot within eight to 10 days. “It can be difficult to choose a convenient time to do this,” Vanderzee said. “You want to wait until it’s cool and when the bucks aren’t in velvet or in the rut. And not all deer handle the capture process well. Giving them a vaccine isn’t always a very clear ‘risk and reward’ situation. And would you have even vaccinated for the right strain? Is it better to just dodge bullets or mitigate certain areas of your farm? Being prepared to take action will be our best form of defense, as we see the way EHD plays out in New York in the months that lie ahead.”

CAPTURE MYOPATHY
WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO AVOID IT
A
By: Gail Veley - Sponsored by Whitetails of Oklahoma
lthough Capture Myopathy is technically classified as a non-infectious disease found in wild animals, it’s actually more of a condition, said Jason Edmondson, owner of Haven Wood Farm in Wilsonville, Alabama and Field Representative for Wildlife Pharmaceuticals. Due to stressful conditions associated with darting, capture, restraint and transport of deer, those that experience Capture Myopathy lose motor function and muscle control from overexertion, quiver, pant and in usually every single case, die. “Anybody in the deer business has had to deal with it,” Edmondson said. “They can die within minutes or even up to two months later. And it isn’t always from restraint and transporting. It can be from hitting a fence or being chased by dogs.” Coming from a professional background of flying over herds of animals in helicopters in Texas, dropping nets over them and consequently wrestling them to the ground (with their full senses and flight or fight instincts intact), Edmondson, 48, learned through comparison that whitetail deer do not take well and do not survive if not handled much more delicately and deliberately in the capture and restraint process. There is no cure for Capture Myopathy. Prevention is the only way to avoid it. “It’s pretty simple to avoid capture myopathy,” explained Kevin Grace, owner of Clear Dart LLC in Eldon, Missouri. “If deer are excessively panting, you cannot dart them, or you will kill them. Once they start to get too hot, you’ve got to quit. It doesn’t matter how much you need to get done that day. You’ve got to quit.”
20 PDFA 2021
According to internet information provided by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Capture Myopathy can affect a wide variety of ungulates from whitetail deer, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope, bison, moose and even elk. Mammals from coyotes to primates, wild birds such as bald eagles as well as fish and amphibians have even been known to suffer from it. Based off internet information from The Deer Industry Association of Australia, Capture Myopathy can manifest itself in four ways:
darting and transport much safer, as xylazine has been known to raise the body temperature of deer and cause hyperthermia. In addition, having deer pens or areas conducive for darting is also a necessity.
One of the most intelligently and effectively designed pens (and least stressful methods) for darting deer can actually be found at Grace’s farm, according to Edmondson. At his farm Whitetail Sales LLC, a solid wall pen approximately 100 feet long X 50 feet wide and 12 feet tall doubles as a feeding site for his bucks. By regularly feeding his bucks within the solid wooden wall enclosure, Grace ensures they are comfortable in this surrounding. Then, on darting day, Grace climbs up steps found outside 1. Peracute Capture Myopathy – Death the pen and from up above darts his selected bucks, without ever having can occur in a matter of minutes due to set foot inside the pen. Once these to potassium release from damaged bucks go down, he opens the gate muscles. remotely and lets the others out. 2. Acute Capture Myopathy – This is a less severe form with the affected animal “lingering” before death, which usually occurs in 24-48 hours. 3. Sub-Acute Capture Myopathy – An even lesser form in which acidosis causes muscle and kidney damage. Urine may be dark brown with death occurring within a few days. 4. Chronic Capture Myopathy – An animal may survive for several days or months but will often suddenly die from a heart attack. In an effort to avoid Capture Myopathy, prepare well ahead of time and always choose cooler days to dart and transport deer. When Edmondson is called to a farm for darting and transport, he makes a habit of first observing the herd to spot which deer are the most flighty or easiest to startle. Those deer get darted first so as to not “stir up” the rest of the herd. He also feels avoiding certain drugs such as xylazine can make
“The number one thing is to always keep them calm through the process,” Edmondson explained. “This type of pen and darting method works extremely well for that.” Edmondson also feels the reversal process of darting is easier on deer when two of them wake up together, as having a “buddy” provides comfort. Although it may come down to spending additional money or taking additional time when working deer to avoid Capture Myopathy, it’ worth it. “A dead animal is worth nothing to anybody,” Edmondson said. “You’ve come this far. Don’t lose your investment in haste.”
