PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As I sit down today on January 6th, 2021 to write this letter to the members of UDFoM, I find myself reflecting on a 30 year career in the whitetail industry that has not felt like a job but pure farming enjoyment. With Covid changing the way we live and communicate with each other I was concerned about the vitality of our industry going into the fall as well as the coming future.

Speaking of sales and conventions I need to let everyone know that the board has made the decision to cancel this years UDFoM convention. This decision was not made lightly but with the Governor’s restrictive guidelines for Covid, it made it impossible to bring you altogether. So mark your calendars for 2022. We can’t wait to be back together!

The fall and holiday season that we just finished was a great success in every part of the industry. Lot’s of breeding stock was sold around the state as well as hunt bucks. By November, you couldn’t even find a buck that was available to buy for a hunt. We just finished a record year for more people hunting and spending time in the outdoors than we have seen in the last ten years!

In closing, I ask each and every one of you to support each other, have patience and understanding for others and above all pray for this country and the politicians, that they may see the great land that we live in and the blessings that we have and cherish each day.

Right now deer farmers from across the country are setting up their booths in Columbus Ohio for the Top 30 Sale. This sale starts off a new year with many uncertainties and unknowns for sure. Yet it proves that our industry knows how to keep moving forward one step at a time.

NADEFA THANKS CONGRESS FOR WORKING WITH US ON COMBATING CWD

he North American Deer Farmers Association (NADeFA), the nation’s leading voice for the cervid industry applauds Congress’ continued increases for funding to combat Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). On Monday evening, both houses of Congress passed legislation providing FY 2021 appropriations legislation. The bill is expected to be signed into law by the end of the week.

This legislation includes $11 million for cervid health under the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). That represents an increase of $2 million over what was appropriated in FY 2020. The increased funds are for state efforts to manage CWD in wild populations, leaving $4 million for USDA’s existing programs. That amount is equal to last year’s funding for these functions. USGS also received a $2 million increase more than doubling their previous year’s budget. This brings their annual spending on CWD to $3,720,000.

Also included was an additional $1 million for CWD research through USDA’s Agriculture Research Services bringing the total for that research to $4.6 million for FY 2020. This is the third straight year that funding for this research has been increased by $1 million. In the last four years USDA has gone from not funding CWD research to spending over $10M on those efforts in that time.

This year has been different in how we interact with our federal partners and Congressional champions.

It is because NADeFA members, leadership, and Capitol Hill Consulting Group have made lasting relationships in previous years with Members of Congress and their staff that we were able to overcome the obstacles and secure increased funding that will help eventually eradicate CWD. NADeFA Executive Director Shawn Schafer said of the increase, “Despite our inability to meet in person, Congress has continued to hear the needs of the farmed cervid industry, and made real strides to meet those needs. Once again Senate Agriculture Appropriations Chairman John Hoeven (R-ND), was instrumental to this success. These increases show that Congress is not forgetting about

® CWD’s impact while dealing with many issues that have arisen this year.”

NADeFA has worked closely with USDA-APHIS for more than two decades on a variety of issues related to cervid health and national guidelines. The CWD Herd Certification Program, for example, is a voluntary, cooperative program that allows participating cervid producers to achieve herd certification status of their cervid herds and to meet the requirements for the interstate movement of farmed cervids.

USDA also has funding in this bill for a new research program through their Wildlife Research Center in Fort Collins Colorado. The $2 million to start this program will make use of existing facilities already constructed for research into the disease. Creating this program was NADeFA’s highest UDFoM 2020- 2021

WEEKLY TB SURVEILLANCE UPDATE

MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES WILDLIFE DISEASE LABORATORY Below you will find the latest numbers on our TB surveillance testing. Please note these numbers are NOT final. While the calendar year may have ended, we are still receiving submissions from deer harvested in 2020, there are still outstanding test results we are waiting to receive, and we hope work on clean-up of the data (recovering missing data from available sources) over the coming weeks. I will continue to send updates for 2020 until these data are considered ‘final’.

In the meantime we will be starting to count submissions of deer from out of season permits, culls and other sources that are harvested in 2021 separately but I will not be sending a weekly update on those until AFTER we finalize the 2020 data. UDFOM STOKED FOR 2022 CONVENTION By: Gail Veley

W

hen Lester Eicher walked into his very first United Deer Farmers of Michigan (UDFOM) convention close to five years ago, it literally took only a few minutes for him to realize what a well-run and organized event it was. But it wasn’t just that.

It was the palpable enthusiasm of all the attendees, along with the ability to network and develop business relationships with fellow deer farmers.

Although the main intent behind having conventions is to raise money “I think the other benefits are communicating and being involved and learning what others are doing in the industry,” said former UDFOM Board Member Alex Draper. In his 31 years of being in the deer businesses as well as on the UDFOM board, Draper has watched the convention grow from what was first a mere board meeting with guest speakers to the large-scale operation it has turned into today. He credits the hard work and dedication of every board member as well as the devoted enthusiasm of Tricia Davis, Gary and Terry Edwards as well as Robert Sergi for making this happen. “Robert stepped in five years ago and took it to a whole new level. We’ve seen really good turnout from our members but also from out-of-state attendees and non-members who see the benefits of attending,” Draper added.

Out-of-state attendee Lester Eicher, owner of Springfield Whitetails in Grabill, Indiana feels the 2020 UDFOM convention “was the biggest one yet,” he said. “I met a lot of people and made a lot of friends. They have great food. I always gain weight.” And not only has Eicher attended every

convention for the last five years, he has also made sure to have a booth.

However, the in-person UDFOM convention will take a necessary pause in 2021 due to COVID-19 and hopefully resume in 2022. And as the UDFOM board looks to 2022, the anticipation of meeting in person is expected to reignite the passion felt by all deer farmers and perhaps garner an even deeper and renewed enthusiasm for the deer industry.

Enthusiasm was among the many emotions Eicher felt during the first year he had a booth and sold “quite a bit” of semen. He was even able to sell semen rights for Express Train to Gary Edwards of Thunder Bay Whitetails and in subsequent years, sold the semen rights for The Fed to Ryan Halfman of Black Label Whitetails. “I’d have to say a lot of the credit for the success of my farm goes to Michigan,” Eicher emphasized.

Success as a Michigan deer farmer is entirely owed to UDFOM board members who gathered together for the first time close to 30 years ago, under a 10 x 10 cover with folding chairs on Doug Robert’s then threeacre deer farm known as Trophy Whitetails. With the intention of having a larger voice and the desire to have amenable relationships with The Department of Natural Resources and The Department of Agriculture, UDFOM board members developed a strategy that day toward gaining more control, creating structure and helping to develop guidelines and regulations that would enable them to successfully continue their farms.

It may have taken several years and a lot of hard work, but things did turn around for the better and

relationships with the Department of AG and the DNR became strong as deer were finally recognized as livestock. As the deer industry expanded, so did the attendance and meeting places for each annual gathering, which eventually led to the conventions as they are known today. In offering an annual UDFOM convention “it allows us to bring our membership together and fund all of our projects such as CWD and political agendas,” Roberts said. “The money we raise goes to so many important things. Without it we aren’t able to support lobbyists.”

Essential to doing business in the state of Michigan is not only the backing of lobbyists, but a strong membership base to forge friendships from. In January of 2020, Eicher, with the help of Kyle Eckert of BR2 Whitetails and Halfman, put up a double fence on his farm. Without the UDFOM convention, perhaps Eicher may have never met Eckert or Halfman and developed the relationship they have today. With the future ability to put on a great convention and welcome back all past attendees and draw a large crowd “Michigan is at forefront of keeping the momentum going for deer farming,” Eicher said. “I say absolutely you need to attend when the conventions resume. This is also a great event for the family. My five boys love playing cornhole. We hate it when it’s time to go home.”

“Mark your calendars for 2022,” Sergi said.

“It’s going to be an awesome time. We can’t wait to be back together!”

COMBINING THE BEST OF NORTH AND SOUTH

now flattened softly under the boots of Irwin Hassig and his son, eight-yearold Brad, on a cold day in Colorado forty-three years ago, as they carefully stepped across the terrain on their father-son outing.

It was hour six into a mule deer hunt where “spot and stalk” was the theme for the day. Now looking out and zeroing in upon the arrival to their vantage point, Irwin raised his gun and fired at the prize that made the whole trip worth it. Down the mule deer went. And in that instant, Brad’s passion for deer ignited.

Today, Brad and his wife Rosy Hassig own and operate Prime Acres, a 34acre deer breeding farm in Woodville, Texas. Not a day passes that doesn’t remind him of his late father and how it all started. After purchasing property in Texas several years ago, Brad, 51, acquired a few deer and would subsequently release them during hunting season onto a larger piece of his property for family and friends to hunt. However, rather than this placating his passion, it only caused it to grow stronger. He then decided he wanted to raise his own deer and officially delve into the deer industry.

MONEYTALKS Five years ago, he started Prime Acres, which also includes a semi-private 200acre hunting preserve.

Three hundred deer sporting both typical and non-typical frames thrive at Prime Acres, where both northern and southern genetics have come together to create an impressive herd, including Money Talks, perhaps one of the best yearling bucks to ever be raised. Money Talks has helped “put my little farm on the map,” Brad said.

Throughout his years of producing quality over quantity, Brad has also realized the importance of networking within the industry.

After being invited by Keith Warren and UDFOM Board Member Ryan Halfman to attend their annual convention, he traveled to Michigan last March and mingled among numerous Michigan deer farmers as well as others who attended the UDFOM Convention from out of state. And while he may have strong preferences when it comes to him living his passion, such as bow hunting rather than gun hunting, Brad is grateful for the advice and support shown by others within the industry that he has met who have helped him along the way. He is also grateful for the help of his children Connor, 19,

Kaela, 17, and Myranda, 26, in caring for the deer.

“If you are going to start your own deer farm, visit as many farms as you possibly can before building your own,” he suggests. “Buy higher end genetics and go for quality over quantity. DEER CHUTES

t was 10 a.m. and Len Jubinville was waiting on a delivery of six does.

“The guy said he’d be here at 10 a.m. Three hours went by,” Jubinville, a deer chute specialist, said. “At 1 p.m. he showed up with nine stitches above his eye. One of the young does had jumped the fence and went flying right past his eye.” Any experienced deer farmer such as Jubinville realizes two things most important for safely handling deer – having the right deer chute and the right layout of your land to get them into it.

Designing a functional way to run your deer into a chute is instrumental to your success whether your plans are to perform A.I., trim antlers, inject vaccines or any other medical or necessary procedure. Once you have determined the best location for your chute, designing and creating a holding pen, crowding alley, crowding pen and tunnel system is next. Keeping in mind that “low stress is so important when handling deer, two things that stress them the most is separating them and predators. And we are predators. If you start ‘stealing’ from your desired group they will want to follow each other and you will have no problems,” Jubinville emphasized.

However, an ideal layout should coincide with an ideal deer chute. “In 1988 I started extracting deer from the wild and started regularly handling wild deer,” Jubinville said. “And it didn’t take long to realize we needed better equipment. There are just certain things you want to have that over time were developed through trial and error.”

Although deer chutes are available in a variety of price ranges “you do not

want a chute specific to just one thing or another. You want a chute that is functional that will do it all. For a couple thousand more you could get the right one.”

The proper chute will allow you to have adequate access to the front of the deer. “That’s where you will be testing and drawing blood and trimming and scoring antlers,” Jubinville said. “You also want a chute where you can stand right beside them from either side and work on them, too. If you have a lot of work to do on a deer, you will want to use a backpress or backstrap so it applies pressure and they feel comfortable and it takes the fight out of them.” Adequate access to the back of the deer is additionally vital, as this is where A.I. and other procedures are performed.

Given that deer move and react quickly, modifications to deer chutes throughout the years has led to more efficient models and much less anxiety for the deer once they are inside.

With more modern versions, walls are more soundproof. Deer cradles are more accommodating and perhaps easier to walk into. “Drop floors” have been replaced by the handler’s ability to gently raise the cradle appropriate

to the size of the deer being worked on, void of the loud “bang” found with dropping mechanisms. More specialized deer chutes, used mostly by veterinarians and researchers, contain a makeshift table where a tranquilized deer can be laid flat on its side for any number of procedures.

Presetting your chute to fawn, doe or buck size is extremely important as this can reduce anxiety or struggling on behalf of the deer and enable the handler to get his job done more efficiently. This makes the overall operation of your farm and management of your deer much safer and ultimately more cost effective. In addition, safely directing deer away from the chute is the last factor in the handling process that needs careful consideration, whether their next steps will be from a loading zone into a trailer or back into an outdoor area.

“Make sure you have thought the entire process through from beginning to end,” Jubinville said.

“Believe me, I’ve made enough mistakes for everybody,” he added. “I’ve learned that things can be safer and more effective for you and your deer. It’s been proven people can handle deer on their own if they have the right setup.”
