Elam Woods Whitetails Dedicated to Great Genetics, Record Keeping Fifteen years ago, deer farming was not even on Bill Holdman’s radar. But when his wife Pam insisted that they go on a vacation, he had a choice of Disney World, a big city or something else of his choosing. “A deer auction seemed like a reasonable alternative,” he decided.

Because he had an engineering degree and owned a construction company, Bill was accustomed to going to auctions.

“And what fun is an auction if you do not buy something?” he asked. “So, we came home the proud owners of two bred does.” Shortly after that, Elam Woods Whitetails in Winnsboro, Louisiana became a reality.

“Every deer farmer I have met has been more than willing to help me along the

way,” Bill said, reflecting on their early days. He counts himself extremely lucky that David McQuaig from Cougar Ridge Whitetails in Oklahoma was at that first deer auction he attended. McQuaig, owner of the breeding buck Maxbo, told Bill something in that first encounter that he has never forgotten and has since passed along to many new farmers. Buy quality, not quantity. “We only wanted a couple of deer for pets, but Dave guided me to some great does,” Bill said. “Then I needed a breeder buck the next year, and Dave sold me Maxboson, a Maxbo son out of the great B-69. Once we started growing big deer most people that visited our farm wanted one.

That concept is exactly what we have built Elam Woods Whitetails around.

Today the farm has more than 300 deer in their breeding operation, with generally close to 125-150 fawns being born per year. Their focus has always been on producing the highest quality doe herd possible. With their Maxbo foundation herd, Elam Woods has outcrossed the very best sires from Texas through their A.I. program. Over the years, they have continued breeding the very best sires in the country to their does. “Our 2018 crop of bucks were our best ever and I know 2019 will be even better,” Bill emphasized. “Solid does produce. That is just a fact.”

In addition to having solid does, solid record keeping has also been their motto. Using GMS software, they enter every fawn, pen movement, medication, birth weight, genotype and every other pertinent detail about each deer. “I am not from a veterinarian background, so I learned I needed records,” Bill said.

“GMS allows me to study pedigrees, dream pedigrees, track medications that worked or failed in every situation and the history on all my deer. That is the way I learned what would work for me.

This software is a must have for every serious deer farmer.”

Not only is Bill serious about the care of every deer, Pam is just as serious and sees to the vitality of every fawn on the farm. Now a master at bottle raising fawns, neither Pam nor Bill had any experience at bottle raising them when they first began. But thanks to the advice and help of a lot of other deer farmers, they learned, and now bottle raise close to 70-80 fawns per year.

“All of our doe fawns get raised on the bottle, so we ensure a tame doe herd,” Bill explained. “We hire three college

students each summer to live on our farm and help with the bottle raising. All of our family gets involved, and this year our grandsons will help also.”

In addition to thoughtfully raising and managing each and every deer, the Holdman’s feel superior feed is also essential if you are going to get the maximum out of your genetics. Many years ago, they started experimenting with a nutritionist at Petrus Feed in Alexandria, Louisiana. Over the years they developed a buck and doe feed that keeps their deer in good health and supplies every ingredient to maximize their genetic potential. Many deer farmers in Louisiana now use this specific feed formula with good success.

Good success has also come in the way of their A.I. program, which has allowed them to import the best genetics in the country. Dr Clark Cooper and his staff have been the Holdman’s veterinarians from the very beginning. Each year they A.I. between 25-40 does with the best semen on the market, and generally have an 85-90% success rate. Over the years they have stacked great genetics on top of great genetics. “The result is a doe herd as good as any in the country,” Bill stressed. “Great does built on proven genetics become very predictable. I already know in two more years I will grow the best bucks I have ever owned. That is because I will be breeding these young well-built does. It just works that way.”

Rubenstein won Bayou Buck for 2018.

“His tag number is Wh-1 and Pam always pulls the first fawn of the year to bottle raise regardless of gender,” Bill said. “At one year old, he was just a normal looking 5 x 5 scoring around 150” and blended right in with all the other yearlings. Then you would never have guessed what he would look like as a two-year-old. He scored 278 5/8” with a 238” main frame. He was a huge typical 28” wide. I knew then I had something special with this buck.”

At three years old, Rubenstein would keep his huge frame with 32” main beams, a 30” wide inside spread and very long tines. If Bill could grow every buck on the farm to look like him, he would be a very happy man.

Rubenstein grew out as a three-yearold in a pen of 300-400” bucks, yet most of them had more points and heavier mass. However, none were as pretty as him, according to Bill. “Every time we drove by the pens, he would meet us at the fence for this daily dose of vanilla

wafers,” he said. “Maybe that is what made him so big.”

Rubenstein’s sire was Boudin, born on their farm ( Maxbo 727/Rolex/ Maxboson/Maxin ). His dam was Or21 and was also born on the farm.

Her pedigree is Moneymaker/Grand Canyon/Sundowner with Maxbo 3x, Hardcore, High Roller, BW Sunny and some great does including B-37 and W-252, the dam to Heatstroke.

“Genetically, Rubenstein is built right and there really should be no surprise that he turned out to be a huge buck.

Pedigrees just work that way!” Bill said.

Their ranch is located about 50 miles southeast of Monroe, Louisiana and only 25 miles south of I-20 in northeast Louisiana. They welcome visitors at all times and love to sit and talk about their deer. “We learn something from everyone who stops by to visit,” Bill said. www.elamwoodswhitetails.com

Once Bill perfected producing big deer, he realized he needed to become successful at something else advertising and promoting his farm. The “good folks” at Hired Hand Software were just what he needed. “They built our website in a manner that even a computer dummy like me could keep it up to date,” Bill laughed. “They have been very helpful every step of the way.”

Breakthrough in CWD Research Reveals Distinct Deer, Elk Prion Strains The research team also detected a difference in prion strain properties in deer and elk, which is significant because these properties control the ability of whether prions can transmit a disease between species.

Telling said that development of the new mouse model has been in the works for years. The scientists replaced the gene that encodes the prion protein in the mouse and replaced it with an exact replica of the code from either deer or elk.

Through this work, the research team learned that the genetargeted mice displayed different strains of chronic wasting disease.

This is akin to the different strains of viruses that exist for conditions like influenza and herpes, Telling said.

Infectious proteins called prions cause a group of related, fatal and incurable neurodegenerative disorders, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy or Mad Cow disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, both of which affect humans.

Chronic wasting disease or CWD, also caused by prions, has reached the point of a global epidemic among deer, elk and members of the deer family. The latest estimates show 26 states and three Canadian provinces have reported the disease in animals on farms and those who are free-ranging. CWD was inadvertently introduced in South Korea in the 1990s and has also recently been identified in Norway, Finland and Sweden.

Scientists’ efforts to more fully conduct research have been hindered due to the constraints of studying this disease in deer and elk; this type of research is challenging, costly and requires large laboratory spaces.

Researchers had not previously been able to detect these different strains in mouse models, even though deer and elk spread different strains of CWD. Using this new research model, Telling said that scientists can more readily study the routes used by prions to access the central nervous system and spread disease, known as peripheral pathogenesis.

Understanding the number of strains of CWD that exist in the world is incredibly important for animal and human health.

“Ultimately, we want to understand whether or not human beings exposed to CWD prions will contract a new form of human prion disease,” Telling said. “We still don’t understand the potential for prions to transmit disease from one species to another.”

The research team is already working on a gene-targeted model to study the potential for CWD transmission to human beings.

But that may now change. Researchers at Colorado State University, led by Professor Glenn Telling, have developed a new gene-targeted approach to study chronic wasting disease in mice, allowing opportunities for research that has not previously existed.

buying and Selling Deer A Must-Keep Checklist Both a seller and buyer of deer need to agree on crucial sale details, in order for the transaction to be as smooth and successful as possible. Just ask two seasoned deer farmers, Daniel Thomas of Daniel Thomas Whitetails in Springhill, Louisiana and Brandon Bollinger of 2 Brothers Whitetails in Loranger, Louisiana. Both will stress how important it is, for seller and buyer alike, to agree beforehand on the best way to get purchased deer from Point A to Point B. The following is a checklist every deer farmer should cut out and keep handy for the future.

1. Determine who is going to transport the deer – the seller or the buyer. If the seller is transporting, agree on the price per loaded mile to do this. Payment terms should also be discussed at this time as well.

2. Use an air-conditioned trailer, if possible, and agree to avoid transporting deer when the temperature will be higher than 65 degrees for the day. (Cold weather is generally not a detrimental factor when shipping deer.)

3. Agree on which party is responsible for furnishing the transport anesthesia drugs as well as the reversal drugs. Buyers must also be informed as to what drugs the deer have been given in the last 45 days, as it could affect the potency of any trailering drugs given.

4. Determine if the seller or buyer is responsible for vaccinating, worming as well as for providing shipping antibiotics, which can help avoid an unwanted and contagious case of shipping fever.

5. Remember to microchip and ear tag every alternative livestock sold, as this is a requirement for transportation according to The Louisiana Department of Agriculture. Within 10 days of transferring alternative livestock, sellers are required to submit an alternative livestock notification form with microchip and ear tag numbers of all sold alternative livestock in order to remain in compliance with state law.

6. Agree on when purchased deer become the sole possession of the buyer, and the seller is no longer responsible for the outcome of the sale.

7. Verify that Louisiana Department of Agriculture pen numbers are exchanged at the time of the sale.

8. Determine who will be darting the deer at the time of the sale and, if a mistake is made, who is responsible. “Believe me, this will make your life so much easier,” Thomas said. “Many issues and problems can be avoided by simply agreeing on things ahead of time.”

THE HISTORY OF WILDERNESS CALLS – Home of the Double D Gravity Deer Feeder

Florida native and deer enthusiast Sam Kight kept getting calls from salesmen, close to a decade ago, promoting their deer feeders. Trouble was he wasn’t interested. He already had his own selfinvented deer feeder. Today, hundreds of deer enthusiasts, deer farmers, hunters, ranchers, land managers and outfitters have one, too. Since 2011 Wilderness Calls, founded by Sam, has offered the most innovative and fool-proof wildlife feeders available anywhere. When it comes to deer feeders, bears can’t destroy them. Raccoons can’t raid them.

They hold substantial amounts of feed, and nothing goes to waste.

“I made them at first to help deer on my own property,” Sam, 62, said. “I then realized how much they would help everyone else. I really care about my feeder because I want them to work. I’m in competition with myself and no one else.” In the beginning, Sam created feeders capable of holding 150 to 500 pounds of feed for both deer lovers or for those who wanted to “bait” deer.

He experienced a few growing pains in creating his galvanized American-made steel feeders that last between 25 and 30 years. Later, he would realize the need to create larger feeders for deer farmers who needed them to help feed and manage their herds. He also created a lasting impression with the name for his most popular deer feeder: The Double D (Deer

Diner) Gravity Deer Feeder. His feeders have been a popular feature at NADeFA for the last five years.

“When I realized the large demand in the deer farming industry for wider feeders like the Double D, I created it,” Sam said.

Available feeders from Wilderness Calls also include a smaller combination feeder for both mature and younger deer, as well as larger, expanded feeders that allow up to eight does or three to four bucks to feed at once. Depending on which size you need, feeders can hold from 150 pounds of feed up to a ton of feed. Perhaps just as important as the feeder size, the grain or pellets placed inside each feeder cannot get wet because of the thoughtfully created roof and sides. “My customers have already seen the efficiency of the Double D deer feeder,” Sam said. “It caters specifically to deer farmers and they love it.”

Sam, a former Florida highway patrol officer, truly appreciates knowing his feeder works effectively, and he appreciates his loyal customers as well.

In an effort to be accessible to them, Sam tries to answer his phone each and every time it rings. He and his associate “Ms. Marlene” travel to numerous annual trade shows and deer breeder conventions to promote Wilderness Calls, where Sam takes the necessary time to carefully assemble one of his feeders. Both are members of several associations such as the Texas Deer Association, the Deer Breeders Cooperative and NADeFA. When you meet Sam, his heart and soul show through as someone who knows they are making a difference in the deer industry. He even sends Christmas cards each year to all of his customers, many of whom bring repeat business.

Because of the no-waste mechanism built into every feeder, it prevents wild hogs from eating spilled grain, or attracting them in the first place. In addition, Sam has also invented feeders specifically designed for squirrels, bull elk as well as fawns. Although raccoons can raid a fawn feeder, it is just as durable and long-lasting as larger feeders. Since Sam placed these feeders on his open-land properties in Florida and Georgia, wild deer have begun to stick around and

“I’ve met so many great people,” Sam said. “I’m happy every day I’ve done what I did. We are enjoying what we are doing.

So many guys see me at (the deer shows) and thank me. Some of my customers see me somewhere and say ‘hey that feeder is the best the best damn thing I ever bought.’” Sam hopes anyone who hasn’t bought a feeder yet, will feel the same way they do soon.

The NADeFA Convention – Was once again a huge success!

Even before Thanksgiving Day has come and gone, I’m planning for the spring NADeFA Convention. I see the convention not only as a way for us to come together and garner more support for the deer industry, but as a big family reunion. Journalist Gail Veley and I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones as we encourage deer farmers and advocates to become a part of each state association magazine, whether it be for their very own state association or for another one they do business with. This is a great way to share their farm, passion or products with others. This past convention was one of the best ever as Oklahoma is a great state to visit, and one of the very best for deer farming.

A lot of detail went into planning the Multi State Association Booth. Not only did we assemble a large foldable velcro booth with each state associations quarterly magazine cover represented on it, we also had to decide where to put the hunting blind, Gail’s interview “office” during the convention. Interview subjects become magazine stories after the convention is over. As a result, we have several interesting articles to look forward to this year such as one about The Cervid Livestock Foundation, insights on whether or not to bottle feed, new feature farm stories as well as other interesting topics. The blind not only provided interviewees with a private space for interviews, it became a raffle prize through a drawing for those who signed up for three or more memberships. This year, we broke the record on new and renewed memberships sold with 87 total!

The blind was definitely an eye-catcher and conversation starter as people walked by and visited us. We were proud to showcase the multi association booth which also included a table filled with complimentary magazines for all to take and enjoy reading. This provided a great way for them to learn about other state associations and served as additional inspiration to become involved with more than just their own. I feel a great deal of satisfaction in representing 14 state associations through quarterly magazines mailed to each state association member.

Each year at the NADeFA Auction, D&K Design donates a ½ page ad for all 40 annual magazines. This year the bidding went as high as $2,750. We are very proud of this and for our ability to donate to and support NADeFA. The time and effort into preparing for each convention is well worth it and I wouldn’t want to miss NADeFA for the world. From the accommodating hotel with it’s amenities, the spacious convention hall, hearty well-prepared meals and much anticipated socializing, NADeFA seems to always live up to everyone’s expectations, just as it did this year. The deer industry is filled with some of the most down to earth, friendly helpful people you could ever meet, and I am proud to be a part of it. Gail and I can’t wait for next year!!

Limitless Genetics

Showcasing the Best Does, Best Sires Limitless Genetics began in 2016 with one goal in mind – to stay on top of the latest, most sought after breeding bucks, breeding does and stocker bucks in the deer industry. “Actually, we try to stay ahead of what everyone wants,” said Owner and Ranch Manager Jesse Boger.

“We offer some of the best pedigrees you can find anywhere.”

Big-framed whitetail deer are the goal of this 20-acre breeding facility, home to close to 200 deer and nestled between San Antonio and Houston in the city of Schulenberg, Texas. In addition to having, as well as going after, the most impressive genetics available, the farm aims to acquire sisters, mothers and grand-dams of substantial breeding bucks that have proven to make a statement in the deer industry. “In an age where trends tend to swing from non-typical back to typical and viceversa, we strive to always be ready to meet the demand,” Boger, 27, said. Bucks responsible for the foundation genetics on the farm today include Dreambuck, Gladiator, Maxbo, Super Moose and Yardstick to name just a few.

Currently close to 70 does are expecting fawns this spring, an exciting time of year for Boger and his wife Mia, both natives of Katy, Texas. Together they are both full-time deer farmers and the backbone of the entire operation. Mia, 29, a former veterinary technician for ten years, is top-notch when it comes to addressing medical issues and overall herd health, Boger said. And although they both run a ranch whose end goal is to cater to the hunting industry, neither one of them are particularly big hunters.

Today, Elsa and Forrest, two bottlefed does, are in love with him and Mia. “When they see us, they come running and pace the fence back and forth until we get in contact with them.”

A permanent attachment has also been formed with Orange 0118, the dam of Brain Freeze, bought as a bred doe from Madera Bonita Ranch at a DBC auction.

Turns out, she was about to deliver the now “famous” breeding buck, one of the most popular bucks in contention now.

Together with four other partners, Lone Hollow Whitetails, Gist Kinsman Ranch, High Point Whitetails and Pinnacle Whitetails, Limitless Genetics is working to spread the genetics of Brain Freeze to any interested deer farmers. Buying Orange 0118 “was something special that does not happen very often,” Boger said. “She now has a permanent home with us.”

However, what is a common occurrence at Limitless Genetics are partnerships between them and other farms. Some of these partnerships include Shockwave with Cross Canyon Whitetails, 3S Whitetails and Double B Whitetails, Nightfall with Pinnacle Whitetails as well as War Admiral with Cross Canyon Whitetails. Before Boger ever began his farm or got where he is today, he spent quite a bit of time studying the best ways to design and build a facility, manage deer and breed the best genetics. He credits his past business partner, Mike Woods of WB Whitetails, for mentoring him along the way and providing him with insight.

Those experiences, along with Boger’s determination, are enabling him to see a strong future with deer always in it.

“I’m always thinking of the future and how to continue to improve the herd,” Boger said. “I’m always striving and planning for a better future.”

NADeFA National News Cervids: CWD Voluntary Herd Certification Program Last Modified: Jun 12, 2019

The CWD Herd Certification Program (HCP) is a cooperative effort between the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), State animal health and wildlife agencies, and farmed cervid owners. APHIS coordinates with these State agencies to encourage cervid owners to certify their herds and comply with the CWD Herd Certification Program Standards.

Twenty-eight (28) states are currently participating in the program as of December 2017. States interested to join the National CWD HCP must submit an application and supporting documents to APHIS. Visit: aphis. usda.gov for all of the applications.

The CWD Herd Certification Program Standards

The goal of the HCP is to provide a consistent, national approach to control the incidence of CWD in farmed cervids and prevent the interstate spread of CWD. Achieving this goal will ultimately result in several important long‐term outcomes, including:

The CWD Herd Certification Program Standards provide detailed descriptions of acceptable methods for complying with the legal requirements in 9 CFR parts 55 and 81, which are performance-based regulations that describe the legally required out- comes. The Program Standards also provide guidance for sample collection, biosecurity, and disposal:

Healthy cervids (both farmed and wild populations) with a reduced risk of CWD. Increased confidence that HCP‐certified herds are low risk for CWD infection.

Strong trade of cervid animals and products (increased market confidence).

Reduced risk of transmission from, and environmental contamination by, CWD‐positive herds.

This goal is accomplished through the establishment of the national CWD herd certification program and interstate movement requirements for CWD‐susceptible cervids found in title 9 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) parts 55 and 81. These regulations are written as performance based regulations that describe the legally required outcomes.

Part A, Herd Certification Program, describes acceptable methods to meet the minimum requirements to certify farmed cervid herds for interstate movement.

Part B, Guidance on Response to CWD, describes acceptable methods to meet the minimum requirements to respond to the finding of CWD in farmed cervid herds.

The methods in these Program Standards have been approved by the APHIS Admin- istrator. Alternatively, States may propose other methods/ approaches to meet the regulatory requirements. These alternative proposals should be submitted in writing to APHIS for approval. States may also have additional or stricter requirements that exceed the minimum requirements described in the CWD regulations.

National CWD HCP requirements for all enrolled herd owners include fencing, individual animal ID’s, regular inventories, and testing of all animals over 12 months that die for any reason. With each year of successful surveillance, participating herds will advance in status until reaching five years with no evidence of CWD, at which time herds are certified as being low risk for CWD. Interstate movement of animals from herds will depend on participation in the program, compliance with program requirements, and herd certification status.

The Program Standards will be reviewed regularly by APHIS and, as appropriate, representatives of the cervid industry and State and Federal agencies. A notice will be published in the Federal Register to inform stakeholders of any revisions APHIS plans to the Program Standards.
