NECROPSY REIMBURSEMENT FOR IDEFA MEMBERS Good day fellow Deer Farmers, Hope this finds everyone well and grateful for all the blessings around us. Spring is coming which brings the excitement of bucks starting to grow and fawns soon starting to arrive.

Ahhhh…...the anticipation of deer farming from one season to the next.

In this journal you will see a Necropsy Submission Form that you can submit to Purdue if you are an IDEFA member, cut it out and make copies. If you have a sickness, disease, etc. going on in your farm and want to do a necropsy to see what fixes the problem. This form will aid in getting strains from the necropsy that will be stored by

IDEFA and aid in assisting vets to help build vaccines that prevent instead of having to cure. It is as simple as you taking your deer along with this form to Purdue. Pay your invoice, turn that invoice into IDEFA and be reimbursed for testing of up to 3 deer per year per farm – one

of the luxuries of being an IDEFA member.

NADEFA THANKS CONGRESS FOR WORKING WITH US ON COMBATING CWD

T

DEC 23, 2020 WASHINGTON, DC

he North American Deer Farmers Association (NADeFA), the nation’s leading voice for the cervid industry applauds Congress’ continued increases for funding to combat Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). On Monday evening, both houses of Congress passed legislation providing FY 2021 appropriations legislation. The bill is expected to be signed into law by the end of the week.

This legislation includes $11 million for cervid health under the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). That represents an increase of $2 million over what was appropriated in FY 2020. The increased funds are for state efforts to manage CWD in wild populations, leaving $4 million for USDA’s existing programs. That amount is equal to last year’s funding for these functions. USGS also received a $2 million increase more than doubling their previous year’s budget. This brings their annual spending on CWD to $3,720,000.

Also included was an additional $1 million for CWD research through USDA’s Agriculture Research Services bringing the total for that research to $4.6 million for FY 2020. This is the third straight year that funding for this research has been increased by $1 million. In the last four years USDA has gone from not funding CWD research to spending over $10M on those efforts in that time.

USDA also has funding in this bill for a new research program through their Wildlife Research Center in Fort Collins Colorado. The $2 million to start this program will make use of existing facilities already constructed for research into the disease. Creating this program was NADeFA’s highest

research priority for FY 2021 and we offer our gratitude to Congress for providing this funding.

This year has been different in how we interact with our federal partners and Congressional champions.

It is because NADeFA members, leadership, and Capitol Hill Consulting Group have made lasting relationships in previous years with Members of Congress and their staff that we were able to overcome the obstacles and secure increased funding that will help eventually eradicate CWD. NADeFA Executive Director Shawn Schafer said of the increase, “Despite our inability to meet in person, Congress has continued to hear the needs of the farmed cervid industry, and made real strides to meet those needs. Once again Senate Agriculture Appropriations Chairman John Hoeven (R-ND), was instrumental to this success. These increases show that Congress is not forgetting about

® CWD’s impact while dealing with many issues that have arisen this year.”

NADeFA has worked closely with USDA-APHIS for more than two decades on a variety of issues related to cervid health and national guidelines. The CWD Herd Certification Program, for example, is a voluntary, cooperative program that allows participating cervid producers to achieve herd certification status of their cervid herds and to meet the requirements for the interstate movement of farmed cervids.

SETTING UP YOUR DEER FARM ADVICE FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS

pon venturing forth to build a deer farm, one crucial question needs to be answered first. “How many deer do you plan on raising?” asks veteran deer farmer Henry Woodard of Woodard Whitetails in Glasgow, Kentucky. “Most people tend to underestimate the amount of deer they are going to end up with.

Always plan for expansion.”

Having “benchmarks” or clear business goals and a clear vision of where you’d like to be in five or ten years can make designing, building and utilizing your deer farm an easier endeavor.

Although there are several factors to take into consideration, first analyze the land where you plan to build your pens, Woodard advises. Avoid low spots that don’t have excellent drainage.

Next, consider an optimum location for a handling facility should you plan on having one, and place deer pens and crowding alleys in convenient proximity. However, don’t think of a handling facility as merely a place to do A.I. procedures. “Think of it as a place to load or unload bucks without having to dart them,” said Woodard, whose 200acre deer paradise includes a breeding farm as well as a hunting preserve.

FOOD PLOTS

CREATING NUTRITION, FORAGE AND GATHERING PLACES FOR CERVIDS By: Gail Veley • Sponsoed by SETDA

S

hould time, space and investment capital allow, deer farmers would do well to establish food plots on their farms or hunting preserves.

Compared to the overall cost of feeding protein pellets, bagged grain and alfalfa hay, food plots designed to regenerate or provide adequate year-round forage may add up to substantial savings in the long run. Additionally, food plots provide guaranteed gathering places for whitetails and nutrition for optimum growth, depending on what your goals are.

Unwittingly, deer farmers turn into agricultural experts when they delve into the world of planting food plots.

While you may not need vast parcels of land to do it successfully, you do need conducive soil, offers Jared Deason of Sweetwater Plantation in Bristol, Florida.

However, before using an area of your property for establishing potential forage, gather and submit soil samples to your local AG extension office to determine how viable and nutrient rich it is for the things you wish to plant, and whether or not you may need to add minerals such as dolomite or lime. Determine whether your ground drains efficiently or tends to hold onto moisture, as well as how much natural precipitation occurs in your area during each growing season.

In wetter climates found in Florida, the perennial peanut fares quite well.

Known to some as the alfalfa of Florida, it serves as a beautiful ground cover complete with yellow flowers that withstands considerable grazing and lasts approximately eight months out of the year. A relative of the edible peanut found in grocery stores, the

perennial peanut is also tough, resilient and versatile and an absolute favorite food of deer. Yet, “one of the drawbacks is getting it established,” Deason said.

In addition, “you have to find someone who already has plugs and buy and plant them. If you can give it time and be patient, it’s worth planting.”

While the perennial peanut may come in at Number One for preferred food plot forage in Florida, perhaps the most well-known, most commonly planted vegetation all across the U.S., is cereal rye. Cereal rye, found in virtually every cervid food plot in areas of the country where deer farming exists, tolerates adversity from colder climates, poor soil fertility, heavy grazing and even drought. Considered a safe bet for germinating and growing quickly, cereal rye can also feed deer all winter long.

“That’s what most hunters and preserve owners do,” Deason said. “They plant cereal rye and oats for winter forage.”

Deason, who first began planting food plots in 2003, realized that in order to cater to the nutritional needs of deer throughout the year, a deer farmer is well-advised to plant a variety of things such as oats, wheat and clover. Deason also strongly advises to never wait too long to plant and to not only plant for the winter, but for the spring and summer months as well. White clover, a common Florida plant, provides supplemental protein-based foraging in the spring while increasing nitrogen levels in soil for grass growth. Red clover, a member of the bean and pea family, baths the landscape in purple springtime flowers while providing another valuable protein source to whitetails. Yet white and red clover tend to not co-exist well, as white clover

thrives better in saturated soil while red clover thrives better in soil that is welldrained.

Therefore “understanding the soil conditions required for planting success will make creating food plots an easier task,” Deason said. In addition, acquiring the necessary equipment does, too. Deason, who used to manage his food plots using a four-wheeler with an attached homemade set of discs, now utilizes a large tractor with several different implements including a seed drill to manage the terrain.

And while it is always ideal to understand your soil and have the right tools, it is also ideal when possible, to fence off your feed plots in an effort to allow the area to rest from the continual activities of deer. Using this type of design and management, “you can open gates up to let them feed on certain things or close it off and let it last longer,” Deason emphasized. “Overall, food plots can make life easier for deer farmers, if you have the means and ability to establish them.”
