President’s Message Greetings IDEFA Members, It is that time of year again…. weening, fawns, cutting antler, selling stockers, vaccination and preparing for the Fall breeding season. At this time of year, there are always a lot of decisions to be made.

Do we AI or breed our own bucks? What semen do we use? What to sell in the upcoming auction? I expect this year to be a good year for selling stockers.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming auctions. Chupp’s always put on a great auction for our state. I encourage everyone to come out and fellowship.

I feel Indiana is one of the best states to be a deer farmer. It showed at our summer picnic with over 600 people showing up. We had people there from Michigan, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Iowa, and Alabama.

The auction and food were fantastic. Everything sold very well. People were making deals, selling semen, stocker bucks, does, etc. Springfield Whitetails, Lester Eicher and Family did an amazing job hosting. Hosting a venue of that size takes a lot of work and moving parts. There was a lot going on in a very short amount of time. Farm tours, food and more food, ice cream and lots of things for the kids to do. Team Fed won the cornhole tournament, next year they need more competition.

A big thank you to all the ladies for bringing food. Your part did not go unnoticed. The Board members put a lot of time and effort into making it all happen. It is a lot of sacrifice on their part and time away from family making it a success. Next time you see a Board member, give them a big thank you.

Their time is all volunteer. We are working on bigger and better things for the next years picnic. Stay tuned……

I want to thank Brad Osswald for his time served as President. He did an amazing job for our organization; he served his time well. I want to bless Brad with his future endeavors. As the new President, I will have some big shoes to fill. I will need everyone’s support. If anyone has any questions or concerns, feel free to call me.

In closing, 2020 has been a challenging year and one that has been difficult with the passing of our Board member, Jeff Eastridge. He was a great man with a bright future, he will surely be missed.

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT Happy Fall Everyone!

It was great to see everyone who could make it to the picnic / Annual Meeting / Fundraiser! Nice to see some familiar faces as well as make some new friends. It looked like everyone had a great time and of course some amazing food!!! The weather was super nice for us which made the farm tours that much more enjoyable. Huge shout out to Springfield Whitetails for hosting this year! Humungous thank you to all those who donated items, money, and most of all your time.

Thank you all for your understanding and working so well with us during these times, we certainly appreciate it. With all your help, things have gone quite smoothly. If you did not have a chance to renew your membership or were unable to make it, please get those

memberships in! You do not want to miss out on your journals. The membership form is towards the back of the journal.

Five Star Genetics – Pedigree Matters

There’s a “standout” among the deer pens at Five Star Genetics this year. However, it’s for more than just the frame of this yearling, which is three times larger than any other deer his age. It’s because apparently, he knows it. “He likes to show off,” said John Stoltzfus, owner of Five Star Genetics deer farm in Shipshewana, Indiana. “He very arrogant when he’s around his own age group.” Perhaps it’s a foregone conclusion that this buck “Pocket Change,” pictured on this month’s magazine cover, will more than live up to his name.

He will be a buck sought out by the industry for years to come. His beautiful typical balanced frame (with extras) is more than 30” inside.

Although Pocket Change, out of The Fed, may be the exception and not the rule in a yearling herd, every deer produced at Five Star Genetics has the pedigree to be exceptional. Catering more to breeding stock, Stoltzfus and his business partner Mark Farmwald focus on pedigree above all else. Having carefully selected genetics from Major League, Black Jack, Horse Power and Pretty Paper for this past A.I. season, this year’s fawns are promising and thriving and following in the footsteps of “Thunderbolt,” who shares this month’s magazine cover with Pocket Change. Thunderbolt, a two-year-old Sudden Express son over Cardiac Kid and a Sudden Impact sister, is yet another standout. “It’s all about Mom’s and sister’s proven production,” Stoltzfus said. “All of my offspring are anchored by a famous mom or sister.”

In addition to this year’s fawns, Stoltzfus and Farmwald are happy very with the exceptional group of two-year-old bucks currently residing on the farm.

“They all have really nice frames,” Stoltzfus said. “And to think that they are only two years old. It takes a lot of work to get them to look that way.”

As Stoltzfus focuses on the upcoming fall season “I feel really, really good about what we have to offer,” he said. “We will sell you nothing but a topquality deer. You can have full confidence buying from us.”

Protect Your Hunting Privileges – Support Pro-Hunting Organizations Sponsored by: WOL In the wake of the recent historic day on July 22nd whereby the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), hunting advocates and enthusiasts can now benefit from the single greatest commitment on record for increasing public land access and advancing conservation. In addition to providing $900 million annually to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the bill aids in completing deferred maintenance on public lands and waterways.

However, in an effort to ensure historic events such as this perhaps continue to occur and flourish, sustainable numbers of hunters must support pro-hunting organizations and actively participate in the sport. “I feel that most people take hunting for granted,” explains Daniel Thomas, President of Whitetails of Louisiana. “And there is nowhere in our constitution protecting us and saying that we have a right to hunt. The late Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia upheld our right to bear arms. But if we don’t support larger hunting groups (SCI, NADeFA, NRA) and recruit more hunters, I feel like extreme animal rights groups will have the votes to change our way of life.”

Professionals within the whitetail industry and hunters alike should share a collective concern about preserving and protecting the privilege to hunt, Thomas emphasized. By standing together and supporting local chapters of Safari Club International (SCI) and other well-known influential groups, hunting advocates have a larger voice in the outcome of defeating legislation aimed at severely curtailing hunting rights as well as curtailing the accessibility of hunting habitat.

Working to continuously protect hunters, counter false claims and misinformation about hunting while striving to educate those groups opposed to it is SCI, whose national headquarters are located in Washington, D.C. Known as the “hunter’s embassy” on capital hill, SCI employs fulltime lawyers and lobbyists that speak directly with congressmen on a regular basis in regards to advancing and protecting a hunter’s rights.

“No matter where, what or how you hunt, SCI protects your freedom to do so,” said Chip Hunnicutt, Director of Marketing and Communications for SCI. “We are not region or species specific. We defend hunting in all parts of the world. We are the only (hunting advocate group) based in Washington, D.C. and in many cases have been the only representation for hunters in a courtroom for legal cases.”

With the understanding that hunters are the oldest drivers of conservation, balance is restored in natural areas if both predator and prey numbers remain at manageable levels, Hunnicutt said. Hunters play a necessary role in this aspect while adhering to the guiding principles comprising The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. These guidelines state, among other things, that fish and wildlife are public property and as such must be taken by legal and ethical means, used for food or fur and never slaughtered for commercial use.

Standing behind the North American Model for Wildlife Conservation are groups such as the Council to Advance Hunting and Shooting Sports, whose presence and action has prompted a national movement to aggressively recruit and retain hunters, Hunnicutt said. Supported by SCI, perhaps a more thorough understanding of the benefits of this movement would help hunting opponents ease their stance. When animals outgrow their habitat and encroach into areas where they may not be welcome, new problems and situations can occur. By allowing hunters to manage the population of certain species in the first place, perhaps these unwelcome situations might not ever occur. And as hunters contribute to the balance of an ecosystem, any ethical participant respects and reveres any animal they harvest, always being careful not to waste any of it. At the Tensas National Wildlife Refuge located in Tallulah, Louisiana, where both the Louisiana black bear and whitetail deer exist, hunters avoid harming the black bear while playing significant seasonal roles in other areas to maintain a natural and healthy predator-prey balance.

“When you ask a hunter how their hunt went, they don’t talk about the kill,” Hunnicutt said. “They are going to tell you about their experience, and what they saw, the food they ate and the people they met. They are also willing to go into areas where others would not, to facilitate conservation.”

With 180 SCI chapters located throughout the world (140 of those being within the U.S.) finding and supporting a chapter in your state is easy to do by going on-line. Contributions to the SCI Political Action Committees (PAC) go directly towards efforts to help elect state and federal pro-hunting, pro-Second Amendment candidates. “As a hunter, being a member of SCI is one of the most important things you could ever do,” Thomas said. “Be involved and support these organizations that help protect our livelihood.”

Greetings From: Antler Ridge Nelson Miller & Family 5WOW! What a year we have had, fawning is over and the bucks are mostly grown out already. With everything being the way it is, we have a lot to be THANKFUL for at our place, THANK the LORD for that. The deer are in good health and fawns are growing fast, we have a unique King Express/GXL buck fawn that has us excited, appears to be a piebald, I would like to get some more opinion on him, but either way we wonder what the future could be for him. We applied humic acid on our pens and are also mixing in feed, with all the testing and research they’re doing, I would recommend everyone to give it a try in their pens as results have been very positive. The preserve buyers are shopping early again for bucks this year hopefully making for a profitable fall for many, we want to wish everyone a HEALTHY and PROSPEROUS Fall. Amazing Recipes Chicken Fried Venison with Waffles & Serrano Spiced Honey INGREDIENTS:

Directions:

1. Using a meat mallet or tenderizer, bash the venison steaks evenly to thin them out. Sprinkle with salt on both sides to season.

• 6 small venison steaks • 3 waffles (use bought or make your own) • 1 cup plain flour • salt • 1/2 tsp black pepper • 1 tsp nutmeg • 1/2 tsp paprika • 1/4 tsp garlic powder • 1 egg • 1/4 cup of milk or cream • 4 cups vegetable oil • 1 serrano chili, thinly sliced • 1/4 cup honey

2. In a shallow bowl, combine flour, salt, garlic powder, pepper, nutmeg & paprika. In a second bowl, whisk the egg and milk to combine.

3. In a dutch oven or deep pan, heat oil on the stove. It will be ready to use when it reaches 325f.

4. Taking each steak, place in flour mix, then transfer to egg mix, then back to flour mix to create a coating. Place each coated steak on a foil lined tray ready for frying.

5. Once oil is at temperature, gently place 2-3 steaks in to cook, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry a few minutes per side until golden brown, then remove from oil and place on rack to cool for 5 minutes.

6. In a small pan, combine the honey and the serrano chili. Gently warm until honey has thinned to a syrupy consistency. Note: leaving this mix on the heat too long will wilt the chilies - they’ll still taste good but won’t look as fresh. If you prefer a less spicy honey, remove the chili seeds before steeping.

7. Warm the waffles and use one and a half per plate. Top with three pieces of fried venison, and drizzle with serrano honey. Serve immediately.

THE CERVID EMERGENCY KIT This recommended list of items to have on hand in the event of an emergency with cervids is inspired

by Brad Osswald, Former President of the Indiana Deer and Elk Farmers Association (IDEFA). Deer and elk will thrive in a farm setting, but medical concerns and injuries do occur that often requires quick action to save and salvage affected animals. The following list and description of items is a recommended list that should be considered to have in your possession to address unexpected health related situations as they occur on the farm. This is not an exhaustive list of items and cervid owners should feel free to retain any additional items for dealing with situations as they occur. In addition, always consult your veterinarian for guidance when health related concerns arise.

Some health matters require the attention and care of a veterinarian to effectively treat and salvage affected animals. For the best outcomes, the veterinarian should be notified as soon as possible after recognizing that a significant problem exists. Lastly, it is not the purpose of this article to endorse products of any particular company. However, the list that follows is based on personal experiences of myself and others that have had to make use of these products over several years of

working with farmed cervids.

Immobilization drugs Cervid owners that have access to a handling chute and have the ability to physically restrain deer and elk for performing procedures may not feel the need to have drugs in their possession for chemical restraint. However, owners lacking access to a chute or some other means of physical restraint need to be able to effectively immobilize their animals for examination and treatment.

The immobilization product, BAM, is available through Wildlife Pharmaceuticals via prescription.

BAM is an anesthetic combination that induces immobilization within minutes after administration and is quickly reversed upon completion of work on an immobilized cervid. Another available field immobilization option is from NexGen Pharmaceuticals. They make several different anesthetic combinations with reversal agents that are used in cervids.

Finally, combining Telazol with Xylazine (Rompun) provides a potent anesthetic combination for immobilizing cervids. However, in comparison to BAM and the anesthetic formulations from NexGen Pharmaceuticals, the Telazol-Xylazine combination requires that the immobilized cervid remain under anesthesia for a period of 60-80 minutes before 40

reversal. The extended time to reversal allows the immobilized cervid to metabolize the Telazol portion of the combination, with eventual reversal of Xylazine with Tolazine. The described immobilization drug combinations contain controlled substances, therefore, obtaining them will require the assistance of your veterinarian.

Xylazine alone is also used in cervid immobilization. Unlike BAM, Rompun is a sedative/pain reliever and not an anesthetic.

Therefore, Xylazine should not be used for situations where extended immobilization times are required or animals may be subjected to painful procedures. Cervids treated with Xylazine should be handled with extreme care since they are not often rendered unconscious and could pose an injury risk to those handling them. More importantly, as of the preparation of this article, the reversal agents for Xylazine, Tolazine and Yohimbine are no longer being manufactured and may only be available via compounding pharmacies.

Dart projector/Dart gun It is advised that cervid owners possess a dart projector or dart gun (the correct description is dart projector). Not only is a dart projector valuable for

delivering darts for immobilization purposes, but it can also be used to deliver medications and vaccines.

Options for delivering medications via dart range from blowguns, to air activated projectors, to CO2 powered projectors, to cartridge fired projectors. Careful consideration should be given to the type of dart projector that is needed for your operation with safety and practicality in mind. The Pneu-Dart company makes a complete line of products that is widely used for delivering medications via dart. Other manufacturers of dart projectors and accompanying products include the Cap-Chur company and the Dan-Inject company.

Dart An assortment of darts based on a range of volumes is advised.

Depending on the size of the animal and the drug to be delivered, heavier animals may require higher volumes of medications. Therefore, darts that permit delivery of small and large volumes would be most ideal. The Pneu-Dart company makes a line of darts that range from 0.5 cc up to 10 cc, which should be sufficient for administering immobilization drugs, medications or vaccines to deer or elk. Keep in mind that some products, due to their viscosity, are difficult to dispense using darts.

Syringes and needles An assortment of needles and syringes should be retained for

administration of medications.

Whether dispensing antibiotics, or vaccines, or vitamins, the recommended dosage of the medication and size of the animal will impact the size of the needle and the volume of the syringe to be used. The smallest needle required to accomplish the task should be used. Therefore, the range of needle sizes that should be retained include 20, 18 and 16 gauge needles (the lower the number, the larger the bore of the needle) in 1� and 1.5� lengths. Twenty gauge needles can be used to treat fawns and calves and larger needles can be used as they grow to adulthood. Highly viscous products like Ivomec injection and LA-200 require that a large bore needle (16 gauge) be used to quickly and efficiently deliver these products. Moreover, the dosage recommendations for some products, like antibiotics, requires syringes that will accommodate higher volumes be used for treating heavier animals.

For this, a range of syringes varying in size from 3cc to 20cc should be on hand for deer and up to 60cc for elk.

Medications You are strongly advised to communicate with your veterinarian and obtain appropriate feedback about what medications you should have on hand to deal with unexpected health concerns. The nature of health concerns that can arise will vary, therefore, the need for certain medications will differ across farms.

Clearly, one size does not fit all, but 41

there are some items that should be considered. For infectious problems, one or several antibiotics may be preferable. Consideration should be given to the condition to be treated and how the product will be administered since the volume required will often drive whether it can be delivered using a dart or injected using a syringe and needle.

Anti-inflammatories are often used in conjunction with other medications for managing infectious conditions and conditions that result in lameness and obvious discomfort for the animal. Like antibiotics, the type of anti-inflammatory that is required will vary depending on the condition to be treated. It is important to keep in mind that glucocorticoids, like dexamethasone, should not be used in pregnant cervids since it can cause abortions or stimulate premature delivery of fawns and calves. Another item to consider is vitamins for administration. Some cervid owners already administer B vitamins to their animals when they subject them to stressful situations, like handling and restraint. Another vitamin to consider in addition to B vitamins, especially for treating infectious processes is vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and is theorized to protect white blood cells from injury by bacterial toxins and permits the animal to better recover from infectious challenges.

Again, it is critical to discuss with your veterinarian what medications that they would consider critical for you to have on hand for unforeseen medical issues.

Pre-dawn sounds within a dark, cold Texas woods were both scary and exciting to then four-year-old Mark McMillan.

Whether it was listening to the howls of nearby coyotes or the trepidatious steps of whitetail while waiting for daylight, he felt very secure next to his Dad during his first deer hunt.

And although they didn’t find a suitable target that morning, a love for the outdoors and whitetails was born. Today McMillan, 66, is clearly zeroed in on his goal of growing big, clean typical Texas deer and offering them to ranchers and breeders from his M3 Whitetails Ranch in Franklin, Texas.

With 870 deer currently residing within 60 acres of deer pens, one deer captures his heart and attention more than any other. McMillan’s early morning routine not only involves his quiet time, it includes visiting McNificent, his prized breeder buck who is gracing this month’s magazine cover.

With coffee in hand, McMillan grabs a handful of animal crackers then opens his front door to behold McNificent, his stunning five-year-old buck, standing a mere 60 feet from his front door. Although he shares his pen with eight of his sons, only McNificent will eat his favorite treat from McMillan’s hand.

“Like my bucks, buy my does,” McMillan begins. “I focus on selling does that don’t disappoint. Sixty percent or more of how a buck looks comes from the doe. The right mother is more likely to produce a son that a buyer desires. Yes, I sell bucks, too, but they pretty much sell themselves. However, my program centers around if you like my bucks, buy my does.”

McNificent, with an inside spread in the mid 30’s, has flyers on each side of his main beams, giving the impression of a 53-inch inside spread. Among the 60 or so well above average yearlings that McNificent has sired, is one who appears to be a larger carbon copy of him. “Some bucks combine looks, pedigree and production,” McMillan explained. “But that is more the exception, than the rule.

McNificent is one of the exceptions! Like my buck? Buy my Straws!”

McMillan offers live bucks and does for sale in Texas and Mexico and any state that allows importing of Texas TAHC certified deer, as well as semen straws and embryos to most all states where deer farming exists. Having been in business since 2009, McMillan feels his farm genetics today combine the best production with the best pedigrees from the most recognized and respected deer in the industry. His two facilities are TC1 and TAHC CWD certified.

“If I thought 11 years ago, I could produce bucks that look like mine do today, I would have been thrilled,” he said. Therefore, as he began and then forged ahead in the industry, he infused successful northern genetics into well-known Texas lines and developed through the years a recognized herd worthy of their price tag. “If you want quality production, you need to invest in quality does and breed them to the right bucks,” he said. “Pedigrees are important but only if they come with proven family production history.”
