WELCOME! PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Greetings Fellow Members, Well, we were able to kick off the 2020 SeTDA Spring/Summer Fling this past July 10th & 11th in Orlando.

It was a nail biter waiting, while still planning, to see if we were going to pull it off with all the COVID 19 restrictions. But, with the help of the hotel increasing their sanitation measures and mandating masks, we were able to make this event happen.

We had a great time, a great turn out and the auction went really well drawing in more money than we expected. Everyone had plenty of time to talk and meet new and old deer farmers and preserve owner along with experts in the industry.

Stay tuned, we are already planning Spring Fling 2021!

As I am writing this message, our farm is being hit by an outer band from Hurricane Isaias. Yes, that time of the year again! I cannot say enough about making sure you have your hurricane preparations in order.

Fortunately, this storm is going to just brush us causing little impact on our area. But this is just the beginning.

The prediction is there will be many more named storms. Again, if you ever find yourself in need for preparation or clean up at your farms, please reach out to any of the Board of Directors for assistance!

I hope everyone’s fawning season went well and your bucks are growing out better than expected. While

dodging hurricanes and practicing social distancing, it is also the time to start working on our breeding strategy for those 2021 fawns. Just make out your list of semen and your best breeder bucks and then connect those dots to you best anchor and breeder does, that’s all. Sounds easy doesn’t it? Well, most of us know it is NOT! Planning your breeding strategy can be quite time consuming and yet exciting at the same time.

This is the time of the year I “dream” about pedigrees trying to match up that best line-breeding or outcross in my sleep. While my husband will wake up this time of the year to tell me about a great hunting dream, I follow by telling him the dreams I had about where I want to move my breeder does and which bucks I want to put in with them… My husband’s response, “women you have issues”.

But on my defense, some of my best strategies came in my sleep  The entire board of directors and myself hope and pray everyone is doing well and staying safe! Yes, COVID 19 is lingering on much

longer than any of us EVER expected putting a wrench on travel, partaking in events and just dealing with the everyday challenges at our jobs and going into town having to wear masks. These are challenging times no doubt. Our Industry along with others will be impacted by this virus.

But we can get through this as long as we work together and move forward promoting what we do as an industry. Deer farmers are some of the hardest working people around and are unique in that we are not just farmers. We are outdoorsman, environmentalist, conservationists and masters of animal husbandry vetting most of our own animals. We are multitaskers juggling family, farm and careers. We are family oriented, we are patriotic and love our country and we are people of FAITH and love our GOD! With all that beings said, I am confident the “Deer Farmer” will survive this challenge and continue our business as we know it and retain this amazing lifestyle.

The Board of Directors continue to pray for the safety of your family and friends along with the safety of your farms during this hurricane season.

HURRICANE PREPARATION FOR THE DEER FARMER 101 Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Michael in 2018 took a toll on many of us deer farmers in the state causing catastrophic destruction, animal displacement, flooding of deer pens, and manifested onset of diseases and the loss of livestock. Tackling a storm is no fun but worse yet, is tackling one when ill prepared.

10. Have a written emergency plan in place before the storm. This plan should include contact information for your local State Agriculture Response Team (Extension Agent), Sheriff, Fire and Rescue, Veterinarian, Feed Mill or Feed Supplier, Health Department, Utilities and Waste Management.

Hurricanes are always a threat to Florida each fall. Most of us Floridians have some experience “manning” these storms but very few of us are truly prepared for that “direct” hit by a large storm resulting in catastrophic damage, power outages for weeks and the list goes on. These storms can be a huge disturbance in our operations, so having a plan in place can reduce the stress to both you and your livestock.

11. If possible, have a satellite phone or access to one in case power and cell towers are down

Below are some to the things to consider to protect your livestock before a hurricane is howling at your door.

1. Prepare for the safety of yourself and your family first!

You can’t help your livestock if you are not around to help them.

2. Stock up on feed, hay and health care supplies for 1-2 weeks. Remember, most feed stores will not be open in the aftermath of a storm.

3. Have a generator! You will need to run water to your livestock and or to pump water out of your pens among other things.

4. Stock up on fuel and fuel up all farm equipment and vehicles 5. Make sure all the livestock have proper ID’s in case of displacement. And take inventory of your animals.

6. Clean debris in the deer pens and trim tree branches away from fence lines.

7. Remove any potential flying objects from your deer pens like fly traps, tarps, etc.…

8. Fill all your water buckets to the top and fill as many other water pales and buckets you can around the farm.

9. Relocate animals to a safer location IF this is an option.

In farms with preserves, this may be the time to release your animals in a soft release or preserve if in the path of a very destructive storm.

12. Strap down all farm equipment such as feeders, trailers, irrigation pivots, etc.… And tuck away or remove any smaller items that can become flying objects.

13. Feed livestock well before the storm and offer probiotics, antibiotic feed additives and vitamins to their feed. Pull ALL feed right before the storm. Store all troughs in a safe location 14. HUNKER DOWN! DO NOT go out in the storm to check on your livestock! Your life is more valuable than theirs!

When the storm passes and winds have died down, this can be the time for you to go out and take a good look at your livestock and assess any damage to the pens or fencing.

Please be aware of potential down power lines! Move animals away or out of flooded pens if possible. Of course, fix any down or damaged fencing as soon possible! Place Hay down in dry areas and wait to feed any grain until all the rain bands have passed.

Dealing with the aftermath of a storm can be just as stressful as experiencing the impact of the storm. Be prepared for dealing with the aftermath of flooding. Mosquito density will be at a peak, snakes are on the move, and beware of the floating fire ant piles in the standing water. But, by taking a proactive approach to hurricane planning, there is a greater chance both livestock and owners will “Survive the Storm”.

Pre-dawn sounds within a dark, cold Texas woods were both scary and exciting to then four-year-old Mark McMillan.

Whether it was listening to the howls of nearby coyotes or the trepidatious steps of whitetail while waiting for daylight, he felt very secure next to his Dad during his first deer hunt.

And although they didn’t find a suitable target that morning, a love for the outdoors and whitetails was born. Today McMillan, 66, is clearly zeroed in on his goal of growing big, clean typical Texas deer and offering them to ranchers and breeders from his M3 Whitetails Ranch in Franklin, Texas.

“Like my bucks, buy my does,” McMillan begins. “I focus on selling does that don’t disappoint. Sixty percent or more of how a buck looks comes from the doe. The right mother is more likely to produce a son that a buyer desires. Yes, I sell bucks, too, but they pretty much sell themselves. However, my program centers around if you like my bucks, buy my does.”

McMillan offers live bucks and does for sale in Texas and Mexico and any state that allows importing of Texas TAHC certified deer, as well as semen straws and embryos to most all states where deer farming exists. Having been in business since 2009, McMillan feels his farm genetics today combine the best production with the best pedigrees from the most recognized and respected deer in the industry. His two facilities are TC1 and TAHC CWD certified.

“If I thought 11 years ago, I could produce bucks that look like mine do today, I would have been thrilled,” he said. Therefore, as he began and then forged ahead in the industry, he infused successful northern genetics into well-known Texas lines and developed through the years a recognized herd worthy of their price tag. “If you want quality production, you need to invest in quality does and breed them to the right bucks,” he said. “Pedigrees are important but only if they come with proven family production history.”

With 870 deer currently residing within 60 acres of deer pens, one deer captures his heart and attention more than any other. McMillan’s early morning routine not only involves his quiet time, it includes visiting McNificent, his prized breeder buck who is gracing this month’s magazine cover.

With coffee in hand, McMillan grabs a handful of animal crackers then opens his front door to behold McNificent, his stunning five-year-old buck, standing a mere 60 feet from his front door. Although he shares his pen with eight of his sons, only McNificent will eat his favorite treat from McMillan’s hand.

McNificent, with an inside spread in the mid 30’s, has flyers on each side of his main beams, giving the impression of a 53-inch inside spread. Among the 60 or so well above average yearlings that McNificent has sired, is one who appears to be a larger carbon copy of him. “Some bucks combine looks, pedigree and production,” McMillan explained. “But that is more the exception, than the rule.

McNificent is one of the exceptions! Like my buck? Buy my Straws!”

“I can promise all of my customers this. You will be very happy with what you buy from M3 Whitetails, or we will bend over backwards to make it right,” McMillan said. He feels the support of his wife Robyn, along with his dedicated, loyal and appreciated employees, will ensure his farm remains viable for years to come.

Protect Your Hunting Privileges – Support Pro-Hunting Organizations Sponsored by: WOL In the wake of the recent historic day on July 22nd whereby the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), hunting advocates and enthusiasts can now benefit from the single greatest commitment on record for increasing public land access and advancing conservation. In addition to providing $900 million annually to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the bill aids in completing deferred maintenance on public lands and waterways.

However, in an effort to ensure historic events such as this perhaps continue to occur and flourish, sustainable numbers of hunters must support pro-hunting organizations and actively participate in the sport. “I feel that most people take hunting for granted,” explains Daniel Thomas, President of Whitetails of Louisiana. “And there is nowhere in our constitution protecting us and saying that we have a right to hunt. The late Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia upheld our right to bear arms. But if we don’t support larger hunting groups (SCI, NADeFA, NRA) and recruit more hunters, I feel like extreme animal rights groups will have the votes to change our way of life.”

Professionals within the whitetail industry and hunters alike should share a collective concern about preserving and protecting the privilege to hunt, Thomas emphasized. By standing together and supporting local chapters of Safari Club International (SCI) and other well-known influential groups, hunting advocates have a larger voice in the outcome of defeating legislation aimed at severely curtailing hunting rights as well as curtailing the accessibility of hunting habitat.

Working to continuously protect hunters, counter false claims and misinformation about hunting while striving to educate those groups opposed to it is SCI, whose national headquarters are located in Washington, D.C. Known as the “hunter’s embassy” on capital hill, SCI employs fulltime lawyers and lobbyists that speak directly with congressmen on a regular basis in regards to advancing and protecting a hunter’s rights.

“No matter where, what or how you hunt, SCI protects your freedom to do so,” said Chip Hunnicutt, Director of Marketing and Communications for SCI. “We are not region or species specific. We defend hunting in all parts of the world. We are the only (hunting advocate group) based in Washington, D.C. and in many cases have been the only representation for hunters in a courtroom for legal cases.”

With the understanding that hunters are the oldest drivers of conservation, balance is restored in natural areas if both predator and prey numbers remain at manageable levels, Hunnicutt said. Hunters play a necessary role in this aspect while adhering to the guiding principles comprising The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. These guidelines state, among other things, that fish and wildlife are public property and as such must be taken by legal and ethical means, used for food or fur and never slaughtered for commercial use.

Standing behind the North American Model for Wildlife Conservation are groups such as the Council to Advance Hunting and Shooting Sports, whose presence and action has prompted a national movement to aggressively recruit and retain hunters, Hunnicutt said. Supported by SCI, perhaps a more thorough understanding of the benefits of this movement would help hunting opponents ease their stance. When animals outgrow their habitat and encroach into areas where they may not be welcome, new problems and situations can occur. By allowing hunters to manage the population of certain species in the first place, perhaps these unwelcome situations might not ever occur. And as hunters contribute to the balance of an ecosystem, any ethical participant respects and reveres any animal they harvest, always being careful not to waste any of it. At the Tensas National Wildlife Refuge located in Tallulah, Louisiana, where both the Louisiana black bear and whitetail deer exist, hunters avoid harming the black bear while playing significant seasonal roles in other areas to maintain a natural and healthy predator-prey balance.

“When you ask a hunter how their hunt went, they don’t talk about the kill,” Hunnicutt said. “They are going to tell you about their experience, and what they saw, the food they ate and the people they met. They are also willing to go into areas where others would not, to facilitate conservation.”

With 180 SCI chapters located throughout the world (140 of those being within the U.S.) finding and supporting a chapter in your state is easy to do by going on-line. Contributions to the SCI Political Action Committees (PAC) go directly towards efforts to help elect state and federal pro-hunting, pro-Second Amendment candidates. “As a hunter, being a member of SCI is one of the most important things you could ever do,” Thomas said. “Be involved and support these organizations that help protect our livelihood.”

NUTRITION: HOW MUCH MONEY ARE YOU WASTING? Luke A. Duckworth, DVM

I am eagerly awaiting the 2020 breeding season for a number of reasons this year. The thought of being back on the road working with old and new friends will be the closest thing to “normal” I have experienced since…last fall, really. I hope you are also looking forward to the upcoming season as an anchor of normalcy. Admittedly though, managing your deer herd within a strained economy can be challenging.

So, I want to share some suggestions that may help trim operating expenses without sacrificing production quality and efficiency. There is money to be saved in changing the way we feed deer.

I’ll come out and say it, we feed too much protein and we supplement deer too many days out of the year.

Some producers feed their deer the same amount of feed everyday of the year, and sometimes a little more when they are raising fawns. It is true that does have increased energy demands when nursing fawns, but there are times when they don’t need supplemental feed at all. That being said, I would like to explain how you can cut months off your feed bill.

A simple way to approach feed management is to understand the amount of protein an animal needs in a day based on their production stage (dry, early/ late pregnant, lactating, growing antler, etc.). A 125 pound (lb) dry doe only needs ~0.25 lb of protein/day (NRC Small Ruminants), which is about two pounds of a 16% ration or good quality hay. Her protein needs double when she is in her last trimester with twins (0.6 lbs protein/day) and triple when she is nursing those fawns (0.8 lbs protein/day). You can see that her lowest protein requirement can easily be met with good quality hay or grass. Supplementation does not need to start until the last trimester and should be continued through lactation. But too much protein can have negative effects. Feeding excess protein is expensive, wasteful (as deer cannot “store” extra protein), and detrimental to uterine environment (i.e. lower pregnancy rates) (PSU Extension).

If you think I am crazy, hear me out. Let’s look at deer in the wild. The rut starts as days get shorter and cool season grasses provide a small boost of nutrition before breeding. There is an advantage to supplementing feed pre-breeding (30 days prior).

An increase in energy close to breeding will improve ovulation rate and quality (WSU Extension). Postbreeding (winter), forage may become scarce, but that is okay because the doe has minimal energy requirements at this time. As the last trimester approaches, spring grasses meet the increased protein requirements to support healthy fetal growth.

After fawning, rumen expansion allows the doe to consume even more nutrient rich grass to compensate for the energy demands of lactation. You can see that God designed wild deer to go through cycles of feast and famine depending on the time of year and their stage of production.

Bucks have a higher protein requirement due to their larger body size and antler growth, but they can be supplemented in cycles too. In general, a 200 lb buck has a daily protein requirement of ~0.5 lb. This will obviously be more when he is gaining weight post rut or pushing antler. But like does, there are periods of lower protein requirement. A useful tool to determine supplemental needs is body condition scoring. In general, the amount of supplementation is inversely related to body condition status. As deer are losing weight during periods of high-energy demand, feed supplementation is high. Conversely, as deer are maintaining body condition in the winter, no supplementation is needed. Finding the balance in your deer will not only boost performance, but lower feed costs as well.

Deer also need a complete mineral source. Most pelleted and textured feeds are mineral balanced.

When we use a cyclic feeding system there will be periods of the year when deer are not receiving adequate mineral supplementation. To address this, we recommend feeding a loose mineral. Deer should have free access to a mineral supplement when they are not on feed. This will allow them to meet their mineral requirements for pennies on the dollar versus supplementing feed year-round. A loose mineral source can also be used to deliver medication.

It is physically impossible for fawns to eat enough medicated feed for it to reach an effective dose. But, we can mix medication into a loose mineral at high enough concentrations so that even fawns can be treated successfully.

The feeding charts listed below are designed to show the ups and downs of a cyclic feeding system. I have also included a table explaining the supplemental needs for each production stage. Odo’licious 100 and 200 are our formulated feeds of 13% and 16% protein, respectively. Good quality hay should be approximately 14% protein and high quality hay should be 18-20% protein.

SETDA 2020 SPRING/SUMMER FLING The 2020 SeTDA Spring Fling and auction is in the books and even though COVID-19 was determined to derail its success, not even a pandemic could stop it. The event held on July 10th and 11th (originally scheduled to be held in April but postponed due to government mandates) was once again attended many deer farmer and preserve owners from Florida and others from around the Country. This year’s event was held at the Hilton DoubleTree near the Orlando airport and was increased from a one-day event to a two-day event which allowed for more time for everyone to socialize and talk about deer. Additionally, we once again had an outstanding group of speakers including Ashley Peterson from Medgene Labs who talked about the recently FDA approved EHD vaccine, Keith Warren from Deer & Wildlife Stores which airs on the pursuit channel who discussed his thoughts on deer farming, and Chris Methner from Blessed Bayou who gave a wonderful presentation on animal husbandry and breeding strategies for whitetail deer. Also, we were excited to welcome Shawn Schafer (Executive Director of the North American Deer Farmers Association) who attended and gave an update on the state of the deer farming industry.

As always, the highlight of the event is the fundraiser auction and it did not disappoint with many lots going for much higher amounts than what we anticipated. A big thank you to all those who attended the event and made it a resounding success. With that being said, the SeTDA is already planning next year’s event. The 2021 SeTDA Spring Fling and auction will once aging be a two-day event and will be held at the Hilton DoubleTree near the Orlando Airport. More details will follow in the coming months and we hope to see you there.

Directions: Mix ingredients together and spread over the pork chops.

Cover with aluminum foil. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes.

Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes

Bacon-Wrapped Venison Tenderloin with Garlic Cream Sauce Ingredients: • • • • •

6 thick slices bacon 2 (3/4 pound) venison tenderloin roasts 2 teaspoons olive oil, divided ¼ teaspoon onion powder, divided 1 pinch kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste

2 tablespoons butter 1 (8 ounce) package sliced cremini mushrooms 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon chopped green onion, or more to taste ½ cup heavy whipping cream, or more to taste

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

2. Place bacon on a slotted baking pan.

3. Bake bacon in the preheated oven until partially cooked but still flexible, 6 to 8 minutes.

4. Brush venison tenderloins with olive oil and season with onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Place tenderloin roasts side by side and wrap them together in strips of partially cooked bacon. Place into a roasting pan.

5. Roast until bacon is browned and an instant-read meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of a tenderloin reads at least 145 degrees F (65 degrees C), about 1 hour.

6. Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat; cook and stir mushrooms and garlic in hot butter until mushrooms are soft, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir green onion into mushroom mixture; pour in cream. Cook, stirring often, until sauce is heated through. Serve sauce with tenderloins.

Cook’s Note: Every butcher is different in cuts of venison. Some will cut tenderloins into steaks like filet mignon. Others will leave like small roasts (which we believe keeps the meat tender and won’t dry out). Every deer will produce different sizes of tenderloin as well, so you must adjust recipe accordingly.

Managing Gastrointestinal Parasites in Farmed White-tailed Deer Sydney L. Cottingham, Juan M. Campos-Krauer, DVM, PhD Cervidae Health Research Initiative, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA

Introduction Gastrointestinal parasites are ubiquitous on pasture where white-tailed deer are maintained and pose constant infection pressure on farmed herds. Though most infections by gastrointestinal parasites are subclinical or produce only mild clinical disease in ruminant livestock hosts, a few species of parasitic roundworms are capable of causing marked disease and economically significant production loss (Waller 2006; Stromberg and Gasbarre 2006; Charlier et al. 2014; Verocai et al. 2020). One such species is Haemonchus contortus (barberpole worm, large stomach worm), an abomasal (real stomach) roundworm capable of causing disease and mortality in young or immunocompromised deer (Prestwood and Kellogg 1971; Davidson et al. 1980; Forrester 1992).

The life cycle of H. contortus and other important nematode parasites of deer includes a free-living larval stage, and all infections with these species are acquired through the ingestion of infective larvae from pasture. Consequently, management of these parasites depends on reducing the number of eggs shed into the environment and reducing subsequent exposure of deer to infective larvae on pastures.

Seasonal Parasite Pressure Survival of free-living larvae on pastures is determined by environmental factors, most importantly, temperature and moisture (Waller 2006; Besier et al. 2016). In warm temperate regions such as Florida, warm, wet spring and summer conditions are especially permissive to rapid hatch rates and survival of free-living H. contortus larvae on pasture (Besier et al. 2016). In moist environments, hatch rates increase with temperature. The optimal temperature range for H. contortus egg development and larval survival is 68-86ËšF (Besier et al. 2016).

Diagnosing Infection Microscopic fecal examination is the most common and economical technique for diagnosing gastrointestinal parasite infections in livestock, including deer. Gastrointestinal parasites shed eggs in host feces, and these eggs can be identified and counted under a microscope.

Fawning and weaning are associated with increased parasitosis in does and young deer, and fecal egg counts should coincide with these events to inform parasite management actions. Parturition (birthing) is associated with an increase in fecal egg production and does should be dewormed within the month prior to fawning or within two weeks after fawning to reduce contamination of fawning pastures and infection of young fawns (Schoenian 2012). Later, fecal egg counts should be performed before weaning and should guide selective deworming of fawns. Selective deworming before separating does and fawns can reduce contamination of weaning pasture with parasites acquired by young animals in fawning pens.

By identifying parasite species present and the intensity of egg shedding, fecal examination promotes targeted parasite management schema that reduce anthelmintic treatment frequency and lower costs incurred by the producer (Barger 1997). Contact your veterinarian or a veterinary diagnostic laboratory for sample collection and submission instructions for microscopic fecal examination and fecal egg counts.

Integrated Parasite Management The goal of parasite management is to break the transmission cycle and reduce parasite burdens below the threshold of economic loss. A combination of anthelmintic (dewormer) drugs and non-chemical management actions may be used to control GI parasites in farmed deer herds. Broad-spectrum anthelmintics are widely available and are effective against both roundworms and flatworms (flukes, tapeworms). Modern broad-spectrum anthelmintics are grouped into five chemical categories: benzimidazoles, macrocylclic lactones, imidazothiazoles, spiroindoles, and amino-acetonitrile derivatives. Anthelmintics may be administered as an oral drench or feed top-dress, by injection, or as a topical application.

Evaluating the efficacy of anthelmintic treatments is critical to achieving sustainable parasite control in your deer. Fecal egg counts from a sample of your herd should be evaluated before anthelmintic treatment and again 14 days after treatment to evaluate efficacy. Little information is available regarding the presence of anthelmintic resistant parasites in farmed white-tailed deer, but care should be taken to slow the emergence of resistant parasite genotypes through judicious anthelmintic use.

Rather than treating all animals in the herd, treating only some animals has proven effective in slowing the development of resistance (Coles 2002). This method of selective deworming maintains a proportion of susceptible parasites in the “refugia� of untreated animals by removing the selection pressure of anthelmintic exposure. Additionally, anthelmintic drugs may be rotated periodically to slow the development of parasite resistance. Consult your herd veterinarian to develop an anthelmintic treatment plan suitable for the parasite challenges facing your deer.

Non-chemical parasite management can complement anthelmintic treatment by reducing contamination of pastures by parasite eggs, thereby slowing reinfection of treated animals (Fox 2014).

Decreasing stocking rates and removing fecal material from pastures reduces the number of eggs and larvae to which deer are exposed. Additionally, mowing pastures may reduce exposure of browsing deer to infective larvae (Vegora 1960). Rotational grazing methods for parasite control rely on an understanding of regional parasite epidemiology, and fall broadly into three categories: evasive, preventative, and diluting strategies (Barger 1997). Evasive strategies depend on moving the herd from a parasite egg-contaminated pasture to a “clean� pasture before the seasonal emergence of infective parasite larvae in the original pasture. Preventative strategies use anthelmintics to suppress fecal egg output until the level of infective larvae on the pasture has declined. Diluting strategies involve simultaneous grazing of deer alongside non-cervid livestock that are not susceptible to the same species of parasites. Concurrent grazing of multiple species with different parasite susceptibility can reduce the intensity of pasture contamination by deer parasites (Barger 1997).

Conclusion Gastrointestinal parasites are a constant challenge to farmed white-tailed deer and effective, sustainable management is essential to maintaining herd health and preventing loss of production.

Florida’s warm, humid climate promotes survival of parasites on pasture and infection pressure can be high during spring and summer months. Microscopic fecal examination is a critical tool used to guide anthelmintic treatment and to evaluate and maintain the efficacy of deworming regimens. The timing of fecal egg counts and anthelmintic treatment may vary according to herd demographics, and special care is needed when planning parasite management in pregnant does and young fawns. Non-chemical

management techniques provide a valuable complement to anthelmintic deworming and may decrease the number of deworming treatment necessary in your herd. Consult your veterinarian to develop a plan to provide safe, effective, and sustainable parasite management for your deer herd.

1. HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT DEER FARMING? Most of our learning comes through BDRL and High Expectations. All of the deer on our property have been purchased through these two known South Florida breeders.

We also attended some lectures through the University of Florida. And a fair share comes through just learning hands through the process, trial and error.

2. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START A DEER FARM? There were two instances that lead us to getting into farming. One was staying at a Nyala breeding farm in South Africa and having the antelope roam through camp at all times, even sleeping on the front porch. This opened us up to the close encounters and beauty of breeding animals just about “un-caged�. The second experience was staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge in Disney with all the different animals living outside the window during the stay. These two events lead us into researching the process and licensing it would take to get us in a direction. We then set out to visit high fence hunt preserves and deer farms to see how we could design our dream facility. At this point in 2013 we still had not found a piece of property that fit our dream farm/preserve but God had us on the right path. In the beginning of 2014 we identified the property but there was obstacles in closing a deal that eventually lead us to a closing in November of 2014.

These magazines are published and distributed by the D&K Design team. All advertising sales income goes to pay for the production, printing and distribution. Thank you for your support so that we can get the news out to the memberships!

Through each state association magazine, we can continue to come together, learn about each other and plan goals for the coming year. We encourage all who advertise through D&K Design to reach out and renew their annual advertising contract and consider investing in space for their very own Feature Farm story. Journalist Gail Veley has a talent unlike no other when it comes to bringing a farm or business “to life.”
