BRINGING THE WORLD’S BEST DANCE TO THE STAGE

Dance Victoria’s mission is to cultivate a connection to dance by presenting and supporting diverse local, national, and international artists, and inspiring all communities through the magic of dance. Our vision is that everyone in Greater Victoria can experience the transformative power of world-class dance.

ABOUT President’s Welcome

Dance Victoria’s studios and presentations are on the ancestral lands of the Lekwungen peoples, known today as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to live, create, and perform on this territory.

Iam delighted to welcome you to Dance Victoria’s 29th season! I have reflected on the value dance has brought to my life. Dance has inspired, engaged, delighted, and, most importantly, challenged me. It has made Dance Victoria’s vision—that everyone in Greater Victoria can experience the transformative power of worldclass dance—more than simply a lofty goal. It is a belief that energizes my work on the Board.

To understand our world, we need ways to experience it. The art of dance shows us that creativity, beauty, and joy are common threads that run through all of humanity. It gives us a vocabulary when words don’t always translate. Dance Victoria is dedicated to expanding our vocabulary and horizons.

With tremendous gratitude for making these shared experiences possible, I thank you for supporting the transformative power of dance. Thank you for purchasing tickets and subscriptions, for donating, and for your sponsorships.

Finally, I want to express my appreciation and admiration for the Dance Victoria staff and Board of Directors. These dedicated and talented individuals work as a team to make the magic happen, and this season promises to be truly magical!

WELCOME FROM SEASON SPONSOR DERMA SPA

“It’s a wonderful feeling to sit here in this theatre, hemmed by chatter while we await the performance. Another exciting Dance Victoria season is here, and so are we!

Derma Spa believes in Dance Victoria’s ability to attract highly talented artists to perform in our historic regional theatres, and we are proud to be able to continue the role of Season Sponsor—for 16 years and counting. We share our city’s enthusiasm for the diverse and riveting expressions of dance that cross this stage because of Dance Victoria’s hard work and selective eye, and expect this 2025/26 season to be one of the best.”

ABOUT Executive Director’s Welcome

Welcome to a new season of dance. It’s a labour of love preparing our annual House Program. This year, you’ll notice we’ve refreshed the design. Our office (admittedly, all-women as of printing) decided the program “should fit in a purse.” I hope it fits in yours! More importantly, I hope—if you choose to take a printed copy—that it may travel easily to your home, your coffee table, the hands of a friend. And that it reminds you of these performances we get to enjoy together.

This season is all about centring bold artistic voices. Hung Dance, led by rising star Lai Hung-Chung, makes its Canadian debut in Victoria with the stunning BIRDY CCN/Aterballetto, Italy’s foremost contemporary dance company and choreographic centre, brings a jaw-dropping program blending the familiar (Victoria’s own Crystal Pite) with creators who may be completely new to you. You won’t want to miss this rare North American engagement.

Did you see A.I.M by Kyle Abraham last fall? I held my breath as the dancers in the sublime finale, YEAR, edged across the stage in their red, hand-painted bodysuits. YEAR was choreographed by NYC vanguard Andrea Miller, whose company GALLIM promises to capture our imaginations with the same unapologetic, contagious energy.

The season closes with a company I can’t wait for you to experience: Boca Tuya. During a recent trip to NYC, I attended a studio showing by a company I didn’t know much about (yet). I was surprised in the best way, witnessing the absolute excellence of these artists. Led by Puerto Rican choreographer Omar Román de Jesús, Boca Tuya will transform the Royal Theatre with its precision, gorgeous aesthetic and, above all, the deep humanity of its storytelling.

Special presentations mean more opportunities to see world-class dance. I can’t say enough about Belle Spirale Dance Projects, a Chrystal Dance Prize winner, previous DV Artist in Residence, and now—in a true full-circle moment—a company we’re proudly presenting at the McPherson Playhouse. This is why we do what we do! Join me in enthusiastically supporting these exceptional B.C. artists. Finally, Ukrainian Shumka Dancers returns with the holiday favourite, Nutcracker, accompanied by our stellar Victoria Symphony

The bold voices we celebrate extend from the stage, to our studios, to our very own staff and Board of Directors. On that note, I am delighted to welcome the newest member of our team, General Manager Anderson Gomez. You will see Anderson in the lobby, in the community—and dancing in our studios. I encourage you to introduce yourself and warmly welcome him to Victoria.

Thank you for being part of our amazing community of dance lovers.

Yours sincerely,

Gillian Jones. Photo: Jeffrey Bodset

Hung Dance was founded in 2017 by award-winning choreographer and Artistic Director Lai Hung-Chung. The Taipei-based company fuses elements of Tai Chi, Peking opera, and traditional symbolism with contemporary movement, developing a choreographic language that stands out for its athleticism and finesse. Since its inception, Hung Dance has toured extensively, earning critical acclaim at international festivals across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. Dance Victoria’s presentation marks the company’s anticipated Canadian premiere.

A graduate of the Taiwan National University of Arts, Lai quickly rose to prominence after the 2016 Taiwan Creative Dance Competition, where he won a record-setting four awards. Since then, he has been recognized as a champion of international collaboration and emerging talent. In 2019, Lai launched the Stray Birds Dance Platform to showcase cutting-edge global choreography and provide artists with performance and touring opportunities. His dedication to enriching Taiwan’s dance scene is reflected in his ongoing international partnerships. Lai is regarded as “one of the best of the young choreographers working in Taiwan today” (Taipei Times).

Hung Dance is named after the Chinese character hung 翃, meaning “to fly.” The company explores themes of freedom, conformity, identity, and the delicate relationship between humans and nature.. In BIRDY, eight dancers bring to life a metaphorical world that reflects the individual’s yearning for liberation against societal constraints. The work takes visual and symbolic inspiration from traditional Chinese opera through the innovative use of the Ling Zi, a headpiece of long pheasant tail feathers traditionally worn by warrior characters. Chosen to signify the individual’s desire for self-empowerment, the Ling Zi becomes a multi-dimensional instrument that shape-shifts throughout the performance.

BIRDY evokes the rhythmic instincts of flocking birds and the choreographed rituals of social conformity. As dancers shift between unity and rebellion, the stage becomes a battleground for autonomy and control. The result is a visceral, visually arresting performance that speaks across borders to a shared human desire: to fly free. DV

Why You’ll Love HUNG DANCE

1

Canadian Debut

Since 2017, BIRDY has soared across the globe, earning many accolades along the way. With nine five-star reviews at the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringe Festivals and a sold-out run of twenty performances at the prestigious Festival OFF Avignon, BIRDY now arrives in Victoria for the company’s Canadian debut. We cannot wait for our audiences to experience this transformative work!

2

Masterful Visual Storytelling

The remarkable production design in BIRDY centres on the Ling Zi, a long pheasant feather headpiece drawn from traditional Chinese opera. Worn like a warrior’s headdress, the Ling Zi extend the dancers’ bodies into space, becoming spears, whips, quills, and blades. They transform movement into metaphor, conveying emotional states and punctuating choreography with breathtaking precision. Against a minimalistic aesthetic, BIRDY’s set, costume, and lighting design are vivid and commanding.

3

Musical Score by Rising Taiwanese Composer

Complementing its visual elements, BIRDY is set to an eclectic mix of electronic and Chinese classical music by up-and-coming Taiwanese composer Hsu Chia-Wei. The young sound designer’s work has been featured in film, dance, and video games. His techno project Waves of Doppler earned Best Electronic Single at the 2019 Golden Indie Music Awards, and he contributed to the scores of Nowhere Man (2019), Taiwan’s first Netflix Original, and iWeirDo (2020), the first Asian feature filmed entirely on an iPhone. BIRDY’s score blends digital intensity with human feeling, producing immersive, richly-textured soundscapes.

CURATOR’S NOTE

“Lai Hung-Chung is the choreographer to watch. Among a growing list of accolades, the young Artistic Director was recently recognized at the world’s biggest choreographic duet competition with a prestigious Partner Award from Nederlands Dans Theater for his work Push and Pull. I had the pleasure of seeing the North American premiere of BIRDY at the American Dance Festival last summer. The precision, originality, and gorgeous visual references (pheasant feathers!) are going to stun on the Royal Theatre stage.” – GJ

Still With Us

A Legacy of HIV/AIDS in the Arts

October 24–December 1

In an unparalleled collaboration bridging dance, literature, opera, theatre, and visual arts, the Victoria Arts Council presents Still With Us: A Legacy of HIV/AIDS in the Arts. Anchored by an exhibition at a pop-up venue in The Bay Centre, the project features contemporary art by women reflecting on their relationship to the epidemic, advocacy material from AVI Health and Community Services (formerly AIDS Vancouver Island, marking 40 years of advocacy), and rarely seen archival works from Dance Collection Danse (Toronto). A highlight is Saying Goodbye to My Brother (1988) by renowned Victoria-based dancer

Lynda Raino, founder of Raino Dance. Created in response to the AIDS crisis and originally performed with Shawn Costello (1961–1989), the poignant duet will be remounted by Vancouver dancers Eowynn and Isak Enquist in a co-presentation by Dance Victoria and the Victoria Arts Council at the Baumann Centre on Nov. 21 + 22 More events include live performances, panels, poetry readings, and screenings. A Timeless Family Tradition

Ukrainian Shumka Dancers’ Nutcracker is an audience favourite, heralding the holiday season like no other. Touted as “Canada’s Ukrainian Nutcracker,” this spectacular folk ballet offers a bold and refreshing take on the beloved wintertime classic, blending the grace and lyrical nature of classical movement with the strength and power of Ukrainian character dance. Audience members of all ages will be blown away by the Shumka dancers’ explosive jumps and virtuosic kicks! Live accompaniment by the Victoria Symphony brings the iconic soundtrack to life and heightens the majesty of the performance.

Replacing the traditional wooden Nutcracker with a vertep, a Ukrainian puppet theatre doll, the production incorporates Ukrainian cultural traditions, grand orchestral versions of the legendary score with specially added compositions, and Ukrainian symbols woven into lavish sets and costumes. The performance is a joyful display of enchantment, entwining the classic tale of young Clara and her dream Prince with storytelling that is “wonderfully humorous” (The Dance Current).

With a cast of over 70 performers, Nutcracker is Dance Victoria’s largest in scale. The impressive cast of Shumka dancers is joined by youth from Victoria's own Veselka Ukrainian Dancers and the Clara’s Dream Choir, creating a vibrant celebration on stage.

Whether it’s your first Nutcracker or your fiftieth, Shumka’s version offers something entirely new: an exhilarating and heartfelt reimagining of a holiday classic that celebrates the spirit of the season through dance, music, and cultural storytelling. DV

Why You’ll Love NUTCRACKER

1

An Introduction to the Magic of Dance

Since its first-ever presentation in 1892, Nutcracker has become the most frequently performed ballet and serves as an introduction to dance for young people worldwide. The production’s playful storytelling, memorable characters, and opulent set and costume design capture audiences’ imaginations, making the experience accessible and unforgettable. As Nutcracker is a family-friendly performance, we expect that enthusiasm—and noise levels—will be higher than usual. We’re here for it!

2

Live Accompaniment by Victoria Symphony

What would Nutcracker be without its timeless score? Unlike some large-scale Nutcracker performances that forgo live music, Dance Victoria’s presentations will be accompanied by our stellar Victoria Symphony, with a full orchestra of 45 musicians. Ukrainian Shumka Dancers’ production offers additional music and score adaptations by Honoured Artist of Ukraine Yuri Shevchenko, adding a uniquely Ukrainian twist to the experience.

3

RBC Sugar Plum Party

This annual pre-show event is sure to delight the whole family! One hour before each performance, the RBC Sugar Plum Party invites audience members to the Royal Theatre lobbies for photo opportunities with Victoria Academy of Ballet dancers in full costume, hands-on craft stations, activities, and more.

NUTCRACKER KIDS

CAMPAIGN CHAIRS

Each year, Dance Victoria partners with local service organizations to provide free Nutcracker tickets to children and families facing barriers to attendance. This year, over 150 community members will experience Ukrainian Shumka Dancers’ Nutcracker through this initiative! Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Nutcracker Kids Campaign Chairs Julie Rust and Greg Phillips of Rust Phillips Group | Engel & Völkers for their leadership in growing this muchloved program. (And special thanks to Julie for her ongoing passion and commitment since becoming Campaign Chair in 2016!) We are also grateful to every generous donor whose support helps bring the magic of the holiday season to so many Nutcracker Kids.

CURATOR’S NOTE

“There is something special about seeing Shumka’s version of the holiday classic at the Royal Theatre. There are the audience members—truly of all ages—with delight on their faces as they experience a familiar story infused with the vibrancy and colour of Ukrainian folk dance and cultural traditions. When I first saw the production, two years ago, I was struck by a collective sense of joy—and the audience’s whooping! Once these unbelievably strong dancers start leaping, kicking, and spinning, I suspect you will be cheering, too.” – GJ

Awards for Canadian Dance Artists

CHRYSTAL DANCE PRIZE

The Chrystal Dance Prize (CDP) champions dance creation on the West Coast, thanks to Dr. Betty “Chrystal” Kleiman, who in 2009 left a bequest to Dance Victoria, held at the Victoria Foundation. The Chrystal Dance Fund is valued at more than $1.6 million, with interest supporting two annual Chrystal Dance Prizes.

The CDP–Projects supports exceptional dance research and/or creation between a Western Canadian dance artist, artists, collectives or companies and an international dance artist. The CDP–Training is awarded annually and supports emerging Western Canadian dance artists continuing full-time training at recognized international institutions outside of Canada.

Since 2010, Dance Victoria has awarded more than $600,000 through the CDP. No other award of this size exists that invests in the development and international exposure of Western Canadian artists at both early and mid-career stages. In 2025/26, Dance Victoria will award over $60,000 through the Chrystal Dance Prize.

The CDP is open to artists living and working in Western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories).

In 2024/25, the recipients of CDP–Projects were Ballet Edmonton, collaborating with multidisciplinary dance and theatre maker Marie Gyselbrecht (Belgium) and sound designer Raphaelle Latini (France); Action at a Distance, collaborating with choreographer Simona Deaconescu of Tangaj Collective (Romania); and independent artist Eric Cheung, collaborating with dance artist and choreographer Kinui Oiwa and sound composer Nouses Kou (Japan). In 2025, Clara KeeferUrquhart (Ladysmith) and Lillian Wallman (Port Alberni) received the CDP–Training award.

THE ARABELLA AND ROBERT AWARD FOR DANCE

This award supports dancers from across Canada pursuing further training at an international conservatory or institution outside the country. Established by Dance Victoria patrons Arabella Martin and Robert Britten, the fund is held at the Victoria Foundation.

In 2025, Natalie Marlowe (Coquitlam) was the recipient of the Arabella and Robert Award for Dance.

Underwriter Program

Personal Commitments for Meaningful Impact

Dance Victoria is building a community of supporters who are choosing to contribute to specific programs or presentations, beyond their annual giving. Underwriting is a meaningful way for individual donors to show support for an artist or program that you’re particularly passionate about. These tax-deductible gifts make a significant and direct impact on our ability to take artistic risks, and to continue elevating the work we bring to Victoria.

Now in its second year, the Underwriter program benefits from dance champions in our community coming forward to discuss how we may align their interests and financial contributions with an area of need or potential growth. This season, we are particularly grateful to subscribers Helen Smith and Jeff McEown as underwriters of Dance Victoria’s international presentations. A multi-year pledge is an invaluable gift to Dance Victoria, providing stability and the capacity for our team to commit to artistic projects and collaborations into the long-term.

When asked what spurred Helen and Jeff to make their impactful multi-year gift, they said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to help Dance Victoria flourish.” DV

Belle Spirale Dance Projects

UNIVERSUS

JANUARY 16, 2026 • FRI • 7:30 PM • MCPHERSON PLAYHOUSE

RUNNING TIME: APPROX. 90 MINUTES (INCL UDING INTERMISSION) • AGE GUIDE: 12 YEARS+

Worlds are Born and Worlds Collide

Led by Co-Artistic Directors Alexis Fletcher and Sylvain Senez, Belle Spirale Dance Projects is a Vancouver-based company that creates poetic and timely contemporary dance works featuring breathtaking technical skill and narrative depth. Belle Spirale centres collaborative processes, producing original creations and commissions from both emerging and established choreographers. The result is a body of work rooted in curiosity, care, and artistic excellence. The company is deeply committed to supporting the talented independent dance community in Vancouver, while forging links to national and international networks.

Belle Spirale’s ambitious double-bill UNIVERSUS explores topics of cosmic significance, wrestling with questions of time, extinction, and our collective future. As an artistic response to our uncertain world, the work delves into themes of interconnectivity, cross-cultural exchange, and the resilience of the human spirit. UNIVERSUS premiered in March 2025 at the Vancouver Playhouse in partnership with the Chutzpah! Festival, VIDF, and New Works.

Everything and Nothing, choreographed by Fletcher, weaves spoken-word poetry by Marisa Gold with immersive design by Senez to explore meaning, beauty, and our place in a changing world.

STATERA (Latin for “balance”), by acclaimed Spanish choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan, explores the themes of urgency and vulnerability through dynamic movement and an original score by Vancouver-based composer Ben Waters. This work is Magadan’s first Canadian commission outside of Ballet BC.

In 2023, Belle Spirale was awarded Dance Victoria’s prestigious Chrystal Dance Prize – Projects to support the creation of UNIVERSUS. The company was in-residence at Dance Victoria Studios during the 2024/25 season, culminating in a work-inprogress showing (Rough Cut) of UNIVERSUS during Dance Days 2025. Bringing the full-length production to the McPherson Playhouse marks an exciting milestone for Belle Spirale—one we look forward to celebrating with our audiences! DV

Why You’ll Love BELLE SPIRALE

DANCE PROJECTS

1

Ballet BC Alumni

Belle Spirale Dance Projects has deep ties to Ballet BC—a company our audiences know and love. Co-Artistic Directors Alexis Fletcher and Sylvain Senez each held key roles with the Vancouver-based company: Fletcher danced as a principal artist for 14 years and is currently their rehearsal director, while Senez worked with Ballet BC as a dancer, Ballet Master, and Rehearsal Director for over 25 years. Choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan is another long-time Ballet BC collaborator. Audiences may remember his work CAELUM, which featured in Dance Victoria’s most recent Ballet BC presentation in March 2025.

2

The Necessity of Art in Uncertain Times

Belle Spirale’s UNIVERSUS offers a powerful reminder of why art matters. Alexis Fletcher shares, “UNIVERSUS was conceived as an artistic response to our increasingly uncertain world and explores the vulnerability, courage, and strength of the human spirit.” As we face a rapidly shifting world, UNIVERSUS invites audiences to reflect and reimagine a new future. Poetic, urgent, and deeply human, the doublebill affirms art’s capacity to restore meaning, awaken purpose, and inspire hope when we need it most.

3

Supporting B.C. Dance Creation

Dance Victoria is committed to supporting the Canadian dance milieu by investing in new creations for the national stage–and beyond! We have proudly supported Belle Spirale’s creation of UNIVERSUS through the Chrystal Dance Prize and Artist Residency program at our Quadra Village studios. Reflecting on this support, Alexis Fletcher has shared: “For us, Dance Victoria has always been a place where our creativity and artistic practice are nurtured.”

CURATOR’S NOTE

“Including Belle Spirale in our season was one of those programming decisions that comes easily. You know you’re going to get a beautiful evening of contemporary dance. Dance Victoria has a long history with co-directors Alexis Fletcher and Syvain Senez–from the couple’s Ballet BC days, to the milestone of launching their company, to awarding UNIVERSUS the Chrystal Dance Prize in 2023. This is your chance to see poignant creations by both Fletcher and celebrated Spanish choreographer Fernando Magadan on an ensemble of Vancouver’s top dancers.” – GJ

A Laboratory for Artistic Creation

Italy’s first National Choreographic Center, CCN/Aterballetto, is a hub for creation, experimentation, and connection based in Reggio Emilia, northern Italy. Rooted in the legacy of the historic Aterballetto, a dance company established in 1977, the centre was transformed into the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza in 2003. The company’s headquarters is La Fonderia [The Foundry], occupying a restored 1930s industrial building that once formed part of the Lombardini Motori complex. Under the direction of architect Maurizio Zamboni, the renovation preserved the building’s iron, glass, and cathedral-like structure while adapting it into a dynamic space for artistic creation.

Formerly a place for smelting heavy metal, La Fonderia was repurposed as a laboratory of creative fusion. The names of the three studios—Fucina (forge), Fusione (smelting), and Formatura (moulding)— maintain a link between the former and current uses of the building, reminding us that even in choreography, movements must be forged, fused and “moulded” to give life to dance.

At CCN/Aterballetto, sixteen full-season dancers work closely with world-renowned choreographers, creating new pieces and reviving masterworks. Dance Victoria’s presentation marks the company’s Western Canadian premiere and exemplifies this ethos, with a playful reinterpretation by choreographers Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich of Rhapsody in Blue, Crystal Pite’s celebrated Solo Echo, and the bold Glory Hall by Diego Tortelli, one of the centre’s resident choreographers.

Under Artistic Director Gigi Cristoforetti, appointed in 2017, the centre has deepened its commitment to innovation, multidisciplinary exchange, and international collaboration. Grounded in research and oriented toward the future, CCN/Aterballetto champions inclusive works that move beyond conventional notions of age, gender, and ability by embracing body diversity and redefining technical excellence. Its repertoire is socially-engaged, artistically rigorous, and increasingly intersects with film, urban space, and digital media. DV

Why You’ll Love CCN/ATERBALLETTO

1

Rhapsody in Blue—a Century Later

CCN/Aterballetto’s mixed repertoire program includes a reimagining of George Gershwin’s masterpiece Rhapsody in Blue, a landmark composition that helped establish jazz’s artistic legitimacy a century ago and remains instantly recognizable as a beloved American classic. With lively, sparkling variations, choreographers Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich strip away the music’s historical ties to 1920s New York, offering a more universal vision that speaks to today’s world. The company’s dancers, renowned for their versatility and rich expression, infuse the piece with energy, wonder, and nuance.

2

Victoria’s Own Crystal Pite

CCN/Aterballetto’s performance of Solo Echo is a rare opportunity to experience the genius of Crystal Pite through the lens of Italy’s most prestigious contemporary dance company. A former company member of Ballet BC and William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt, Pite is highly respected throughout Canada and internationally, with accolades including the 2022 Governor General of Canada’s Performing Arts Award. Her Vancouver company, Kidd Pivot, tours to global acclaim. (DV audiences may remember our 2020 presentation of Kidd Pivot’s Revisor.) Inspired by Johannes Brahms’ music and Mark Strand’s poem “Lines for Winter,” Solo Echo beautifully explores themes of love, loss, and acceptance.

3

Rather Risqué

Glory Hall, by Italian choreographer Diego Tortelli, may make audiences blush! Tortelli has created several acclaimed works for companies across Europe and is a resident choreographer at CCN/Aterballetto. In this sensual and rebellious journey between light and darkness, the choreography unfolds like a rapturous rite against a backdrop of rock and symphonic music. The sacred and profane intertwine in a continuous interplay of pleasure, virtuosity, and the pursuit of personal glory, with Glory Hall’s finale swelling in a crescendo of harmony and transgression.

CURATOR’S NOTE

“This is a rare opportunity to see Italy’s leading contemporary dance company in Canada. With only two stops planned in North America—Victoria and Stanford, CA—I urge you not to miss it! The mixed program by this gorgeous company of 16 dancers has something for everyone: a reimagined Rhapsody in Blue celebrating 100 years of George Gershwin’s legendary composition; Solo Echo by Crystal Pite; and a riotous new work by Italian choreographer on the rise, Diego Tortelli.” – GJ

Bodies of Matter

MARCH 6 + 7, 2026 • FRI + SAT • 7:30 PM • ROYAL THEATRE

RUNNING TIME: APPROX. 90 MINUTES (INCL UDING INTERMISSION) • AGE GUIDE: 12 YEARS+

The Body: A Vessel of Transcendence

Founded in 2007 by Artistic Director Andrea Miller, GALLIM is an interdisciplinary arts organization dedicated to fostering the exchange of movement wisdom. Rooted in Miller’s exploration of the essential elements of human behaviour, the company is acclaimed for its bold physicality, emotional depth, and boundary-pushing collaborations across artistic disciplines. From its Brooklyn home base to international stages, GALLIM unites movement, visual art, film, fashion, and sound into innovative dance performances that are shaping the future of contemporary dance.

Bodies of Matter is a powerful collection showcasing 17 years of Miller’s choreographic vision. The program includes six distinct pieces—each a universe unto itself—exploring the body as a vessel for memory, connection, and transcendence. These creations explore nuance and depth of emotions as well as the complexity of human relationships. As Miller reflects, “There are essential, ambiguous, and complex elements of our humanity that can only be accessed through our physical experience…” Bodies of Matter brings this belief to life, illuminating the expressive potential of the body and the wondrous alchemy of movement and performance.

GALLIM’s performance history includes appearances at leading institutions and festivals such as Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The Joyce Theatre, BAM, Jacob’s Pillow, Sadler’s Wells, the Royal Opera House, Théâtre National de Chaillot, and Art Basel. Landmark works include YOU ARE HERE, a pandemic-responsive installation for Lincoln Center; CARBON, a durational performance on the body and its behaviour at The Met Breuer; and STONE SKIPPING, created for The Temple of Dendur at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The company’s wide-ranging collaborations span artists and brands such as Hermès, Vogue, the English National Ballet, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, and Montreal-based filmmaker Xavier Dolan. DV

A Force in NYC’s Dance Vanguard

Andrea Miller is one of the most influential figures on New York’s contemporary dance scene. With an unmistakable voice and movement language, her works are raw, textured, and deeply human. Miller holds the distinction as the first choreographer to be named Artist-in-Residence at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and she has been recognized through fellowships from the Guggenheim, Sadler’s Wells, New York City Center, and the Princess Grace Foundation. Miller’s global influence has led to major commissions for English National Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham (DV audiences may remember the sublime and ritualistic YEAR), Ailey II, and The Juilliard School. Above all, Miller’s work is driven by a deep curiosity about the body’s capacity: its anatomy, power, and instinct to connect.

2

Come for the Dance, Stay for the Soundtrack

Bodies of Matter pulses with an eclectic yet accessible soundscape blending pop, classical, and electronic music. Audiences will enjoy the soul-stirring elegance of Strauss’s Four Last Songs, alongside the haunting electronics of Nicolas Jaar. Sade’s tender No Ordinary Love leads into original compositions by emerging artists like RIVKA, contributing a raw, contemporary edge. In the exuberant BRUCE, expect to be swept up in the boisterous rhythms of Balkan Beat Box, woven seamlessly with the whimsical melodies of indie icon Joanna Newsom—all while GALLIM’s stunning dancers inhabit the stage with unfiltered emotion, precision, and humanity.

3

Feel Everything

In the Digital Age, GALLIM sees the tangible universe as a radical site for self-expression. Bodies of Matter will ground audiences back into the immediacy of embodiment, as if plugged into some “primal pulse, awakening and ultimately pummeling the senses” (The Guardian). Expect the unexpected in this wild reclamation of the joy of embodiment! This mixed program doesn’t just ask to be watched, it asks to be felt, absorbed, and experienced through the body.

CURATOR’S NOTE

“Imagine sitting in a small studio, in the front row of a showing by one of NYC’s most exciting contemporary dance companies. During an ensemble piece with dancers in vibrant orange costumes and pulsing electronic music, two male dancers suddenly emerge, striding powerfully towards you… on stilts! My first introduction to GALLIM had me on the edge of my seat. I wish the same for our audiences as you experience this powerful and uncompromising company of artists.” – GJ

Boca Tuya

Mixed Program

APRIL 10 + 11, 2026 • FRI + SAT • 7:30 PM • ROYAL THEATRE

RUNNING TIME: APPROX. 85 MINUTES (INCL UDING INTERMISSION) • AGE GUIDE: 12 YEARS+

Dreaming Without Boundaries

Boca Tuya is a New York-based movement collective redefining the artistic landscape under the visionary direction of Omar Román de Jesús. Founded in 2018, the company is rooted in the rhythms, storytelling traditions, and cultural heritage of de Jesús’ native Puerto Rico. The rising choreographer has quickly gained acclaim for his immersive dreamscapes, weaving in vibrant cadences, surrealist narratives, and unforgettable characters. De Jesús’ strength lies in his ability to conjure people and experiences that audiences recognize themselves in, all with striking technical beauty and an innovative movement vocabulary that has taken the New York dance world by storm.

In a recent Q&A at Jacob’s Pillow, de Jesús shared, “My work relies heavily on abstract narrative. Since my main genre, concert contemporary dance, can be notoriously hard to follow even with a more lateral narrative structure, it is important to me to create characters with clear functions within my abstract worlds.” The choreographer tailors these roles to reflect the distinct personalities of each dancer, rather than assigning identity-based labels. For example, rather than focusing on categories like queer or Puerto Rican, one dancer’s confidence, flamboyance, and sassiness are embraced and reflected in their character.

Boca Tuya’s work has been featured by the Guggenheim’s Works & Process, Kennedy Center, Jacob’s Pillow (2025), PRISMA Festival (Panama), Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, and 92NY (92nd Street Y), where Omar Román de Jesús served as 2024/25 Artist in Residence. His accolades include the Princess Grace Award, Dance Magazine’s Harkness Promise Award, and a NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship.

Dance Victoria is honoured to be Boca Tuya’s inaugural Canadian presenter, introducing audiences to a bold new voice in contemporary dance. While the company has toured extensively in the United States and South America, its Canadian debut represents a significant milestone and affirms our commitment to programming that embodies boundary-pushing artistic excellence, celebrates diversity of voices, and sparks curiosity through new perspectives. Why You’ll Love BOCA TUYA

1

The Vision of Omar Román de Jesús

Boca Tuya is shaped by the singular vision of Artistic Director Omar Román de Jesús, a queer Puertorriqueño choreographer whose work merges virtuosic contemporary movement with surreal, cinematic storytelling. As a creator, de Jesús invites audiences into richly imaginative worlds that oscillate between dream and reality, exploring humanity through humour, emotional depth, and abstraction. A Princess Grace Award winner, he is a rising voice in American dance whose work resonates with compassion, curiosity, and originality.

2

The Contagious Boricua Heartbeat

Boca Tuya’s mixed program is rooted in the cultural heartbeat of Puerto Rico, channelling the island’s rich traditions and rhythms. The company embodies the essence of Boricua—a spirit defined by resilience, joy, creativity, and an enduring connection to community. Each work carries echoes of ancestral memory, inviting audiences to experience the depth, complexity, and vitality of Puerto Rican culture through de Jesús’s sophisticated and distinct choreographic voice.

3

Putting Artists First

Since its inception, Boca Tuya has fostered a culture of holistic growth, prioritizing artists’ well-being, economic stability, and creative fulfillment while empowering dancers to live fully in their craft. Through performances, global touring, educational outreach, and choreographic commissions, the company champions authenticity, equity, and innovation through lively and heartfelt works. Boca Tuya uplifts Latiné voices, expands pathways across the Latin diaspora, and champions visibility and excellence in dance for New York’s top movement artists.

CURATOR’S NOTE

“Omar Román de Jesús aspires to “give dancers and audiences a platform to dream without boundaries.” That, I can vouch, is how it feels watching this company on stage. You are dreaming, and anything is possible. This mixed program of contemporary works includes the visceral and energetic Los Perros, an ensemble piece showcasing human nature through the eyes of street dogs; an exquisite duet, featuring de Jesús, for two male dancers; and a powerful finale that will see the Royal stage transformed by gently falling snow.” – GJ

STUDIOS

Artist Programs

REMOVING BARRIERS TO CREATIVITY

Dance Victoria’s Studio Access program provides subsidized access to DV Studios for South Vancouver Island-based professional dance artists developing new creations or conducting research. Artists may request up to 100 hours annually for a single project—60 hours free of charge, plus 40 additional hours at just $5/hour. Applications are accepted year-round. To learn more, visit DanceVictoria.com or contact Kiera Shaw, Artist Programs & Studio Manager, at kiera@dancevictoria.com.

A Hub for Dance Creation

Recognized nationally as a choreographic centre and cherished locally as a community hub, Dance Victoria Studios is a vital space for dance creation. Dance Victoria champions the region’s exceptional independent dance artists, offering them the resources and visibility they need to thrive on the national stage and beyond. With technical upgrades completed in 2022, DV Studios is now even more versatile and can be utilized for filmmaking, livestreaming, and in-person performance.

For over fifteen years, Dance Victoria’s Artist Residency program has supported B.C.-based artists with free studio time, mentorship, technical support, and direct financial contributions. Each year, we select 8–12 artists through a competitive call for proposals. The goal is to amplify a diversity of voices—both emerging and established— across dance disciplines.

In 2025/26, Dance Victoria will welcome nine B.C. artists- and collectives-in-residence: Eric Cheung, Tara Cheyenne Performance, Dance//Novella, Embrace: Performance, Ne.Sans Opera & Dance, Noble Riot Dance Theatre, Lynda Raino, Travelling Bodies, and Visible Bodies Collective. In addition to developing new works in a supportive environment, these artists will connect with the community through work-in-progress showings (Rough Cuts), public masterclasses and workshops, and other activities, furthering Dance Victoria’s mission to inspire all communities through the magic of dance. Dance Is For Everyone

Our Commitment to Arts Access

SPONSOR

At Dance Victoria, we believe everyone should have access to the transformative power of world-class dance. Our Dance Is For Everyone program provides free tickets and engagement opportunities to members of our community facing barriers. Last season, in addition to our annual Nutcracker Kids campaign, we raised funds from generous donors to welcome our community to performances by Dancers of Damelahamid, Shamel Pitts | TRIBE, and Ballet BC. Over 200 tickets were distributed in partnership with local service organizations. Thank you!

We’re committed to expanding this work—and our impact. Last spring, in collaboration with Vancouver’s New Works and with funding from the National Arts Centre’s Arts Alive program, Dance Victoria piloted an expansion of the established Share Dance program in Victoria. This partnership engaged Victoria-based teaching artists, Lia Crowe and Jochelle Pereña, and created vital opportunities for equitydeserving young people to access dance.

Leave a Legacy

Next season will be Dance Victoria’s 30th anniversary. We are incredibly proud of where DV has been—and where we will surely go with the continued support of our engaged community of dancelovers!

We regularly hear from our most ardent supporters about the impact DV has made on their lives. This impact is reflected in the dedication of our volunteers, our committed monthly donors, and the number of donors who make a gift (or two) each year. We are also deeply grateful that Dance Victoria is the recipient of heartfelt bequests from our strongest champions.

LEGACY DONOR PROFILE: LORNA HARRIS

Lorna has made a cherished, lasting impression on Dance Victoria— growing from subscriber, to enthusiastic student of dance (attending a gamut of dance performances from edgy Rough Cuts to mainstage performances in Victoria and beyond), to audience development champion, to legacy donor! Lorna spearheaded Dance Victoria’s popular Night Moves program for young professionals (ages 30-45) and has maintained her commitment as our long-time Night Moves underwriter. Her support and vision have been vital to the deeplydiscounted tickets and curated social gatherings that are the signature of Night Moves. Thank you, Lorna.

For all these contributions, we are truly inspired. And we are dreaming big! To build on this momentum, we look to visionary donors who are thinking now about how their contribution—whatever the size—can carry Dance Victoria into the future. To learn about the impact your legacy gift could make, please contact Executive Director Gillian Jones at gillian@dancevictoria.com or call 250-595-1829. IN MEMORIAM

Susan Snell, founding partner at Cameron Izard Snell (CIS) Chartered Professional Accountants, was a passionate supporter of the performing arts and, in particular, dance. Along with being a subscriber and individual donor to the Nutcracker Kids program, Susan demonstrated her philanthropic leadership by becoming a sponsor in 2014 when Dance Victoria presented the gorgeous Ballet West from Utah. In the ensuing years, with Susan’s championing, CIS has been a sponsor mainstay, contributing vital support that has elevated Dance Victoria’s reputation for bringing the World’s Best Dance to Victoria. We have fond memories of our last in-person meeting with Susan, when we discussed, among many things, her joyful trip to the Yukon seeing the northern lights and delighting in dogsledding! We thank you, Susan, and we will miss you.
