Welcome to The Nutcracker 2015, the 30th anniversary of our first (and Santa Clarita’s as well) Nutcracker.

Thirty years! In 1985, the City of Santa Clarita had not yet been formed.

There were only four high schools – Hart, Canyon, Saugus, and Bowman. Looking through the program is like traveling back in time: Marsha McLean (our mayor), was a “Party Guest”, Sheila Ely (to be Veloz) narrated the story because the dancing couldn’t quite tell the story at that point. Many of the names listed are familiar and conjure up many memories. Shannon Rice (McNey) was amongst a young group of dancers performing the “Mechanical Dolls”! All the leads were performed by the teachers – Spanish soloist was Tina Landon, who became Janet Jackson’s choreographer!

The teachers were also the maids at the party, and right up there with me was Connie, who was thrilled to be bringing a classical ballet to Santa Clarita. My son was younger than all of my grandsons now WOW. In some ways it feels like a life-time ago, then looking at the program makes it feel so much more recent and it warms my heart.

Thousands have been involved in our Nutcracker history but none more so than Miss Connie. Thank you, my dear friend, for

everything. It continues to be a fantastic ride! Wendy hopped on 21 years ago, close to when Ashley started performing in Nutcrackers! And Michele has 15 Nutcrackers with us under her belt. Thank you, ladies- you are the number one reason for getting us to where we are today. I hope we make you proud this weekend. To Daphne, thank you for staying on the ride so long, even as it gets crazier and crazier (and even scarier sometimes – LOL). And to the rest of the DS84 staff, you all play a pertinent part in the success D'Nell Hoerle as the Mouse King in of Nutcracker, and battle with her army of rodents today we celebrate each of you. Thank you to all of our DS84 families – your trust, support and loyalty are what makes this all happen. And to, of course, our students: so many DS84 alumni have paved the path for you to shine on stage this weekend, as we know you will. Thank you for working so hard to carry the torch. Cherish the moment – before you know it, 30 years will have gone by! While the story has always remained the same, the evolution has been quite amazing. The owners of the studio (I would not become the director until the following year) presented the Nutcracker in order to inspire more students to study ballet. Flash forward to more than 200 students studying ballet in 27 classes each week! Everything has evolved – from the quality of dancing, costuming, and choreography, to the preparation, sets and program (thank you, Melody).

This weekend’s performances are a far cry from the introduction in 1985. But that is where it all began for us, and we are so proud of and grateful for each step of the journey. We thank you so very much for being

here this weekend to share in this chapter of DS84’s Nutcracker. We hope you enjoy. Cheers to the next thirty.
