MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR development, will play an integral part in the development of our next strategic plan. We are extremely grateful to our community colleagues in helping us reach well beyond our membership to ensure we had a broad range of dance artists across the country participating in the survey.

AS A FORMER DANCER, I feel so fortunate to work with artists whose passion, creativity and courage are a daily inspiration. Dancers walk through our door with vastly different needs, hopes and dreams, and yet have a common dancer’s trait—the willingness to venture into the unknown with faith that their passion and determination will see them succeed. I hope the following pages will give you a glimpse into some of those successes over the past year.

That diversity of needs, in part, is due to the expanding professional dance community in Canada. Currently, our members self-identify as practicing 54 different dance forms, from ballet to butoh and from hip hop to hoop. In order to better understand the many different ways dancers live and work in today’s milieu, the DTRC conducted a major national survey in 2016, designed and analysed by Hill Strategies Research Inc. The report, Professional dance performers in Canada in 2016: Activities, incomes, health, and career

Pluralism played an important role in our activities over the past year as the DTRC joined those in our community who are working to address inequity and inequality in arts and culture. In Ottawa, the DTRC joined colleagues from many distinct dance practices for a National Roundtable on Pluralism in Dance, and we are one of 14 arts organizations collaborating with Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO) on their Pluralism Organizational Change Project, which hopes to be a catalyst for change within the sector.

The DTRC is proud to be part of this vitally important work.

Collaboration is key to the way we work at the DTRC. To present our 2015/16 on the MOVE/danse TRANSIT program series for emerging artists, we worked with 37 schools and arts organizations as well as 117 presenters and panelists across the country. Our latest project, LEAP Leading Edge After Performance, is our partnership with the transition program of the Canadian Sport Institute. LEAP brings our sectors together to share and exchange knowledge and experience in the field of career and life transition for elite athletes and professional dancers.

In preparation for LEAP's international conference in November 2016, we worked with key stakeholders including educators, counsellors, coaches, artistic directors

and former and current dancers and athletes. The roundtable discussions with dancers and athletes brought home how very similar the transition experiences are in the two sectors.

Career transition is at the forefront of today’s economy and with 30 years of experience we have a great deal to share—and to learn. Whether we are among 900 delegates at Cannexus, a counselling and career development conference, working with associates who support the career transitions of military personnel; or discussing dancer transition with our international colleagues, our passion for dancers is at the heart of our work. All our partnerships and explorations are to help make their professional transitions as smooth as possible, so they can reach their potential while performing and prepare in advance for life after dance.

I wish to acknowledge our dedicated staff who, with their background in the arts and their understanding of the unique experiences of a life in performance, help dancers recognize their strengths, build their confidence and provide them with options for the future. And to recognize the DTRC’s Board of Directors for their dedication, wisdom and governance.

The successes of our dancers could not have been realized without our many extraordinary supporters. We are deeply grateful to the Department of Canadian Heritage, our federal and provincial funding partners, foundations, supporting dance companies, individual donors, sponsors, and volunteers.

SUPPORTING THE ENTIRE ARC OF A DANCER'S CAREER

MEMBERSHIP BREAKDOWN

BY PROVINCE

The Dancer Transition Resource Centre is committed to supporting dancers when they need it most: moments of transition occurring throughout their career arc, and at the end of a performance career when the need for investment in personal investigation and professional retraining is most crucial.

SKILLS GRANTS Skills Grants are applied to a course or training program providing skills transferable to any industry or career. Common areas of training for our members include languages, business skills, writing and digital technologies—all of which benefit dancers while they are forging artistic careers and beyond. In 2015/16 the DTRC awarded 27 of these grants totalling $15,405.

Recipients across the country include flamenco dancer Rosanna Terracciano who polished up her writing skills with a course at Mount Royal University, Julianne Chapple who studied web technologies at BCIT to further develop her online presence, and William Smith who paired studies in business essentials and Photoshop at Concordia University to help him manage his own business.

RETRAINING & SUBSISTENCE GRANTS Grants for retraining and subsistence support dancers as they begin retraining for a new career path, be it a parallel career or a second career once they leave the stage.

In 2015/16, the DTRC awarded 64 retraining grants and awards to support dancers’ career transition goals totalling $415,964.

COUNSELLING Our roster includes counselling professionals passionate about attending to the unique needs of dance professionals across five areas of practice—career, personal, legal, academic and financial counselling. As a highly valued service accessible to members at any point in their careers, DTRC provided 410 hours of counselling totalling $34,864 of services in 2015/16.

SUPPORTING THE WHOLE PERSON Q&A WITH DTRC CAREER COUNSELLOR SALLY HALLIDAY

What do you find rewarding about working with the DTRC? First of all, I love to be with creative people — dancers, writers, and artists. I took dance classes throughout my youth, as did my two sisters. One of my sisters had a career in dance, but transition resources like the DTRC did not exist at that time.

I have seen how demanding and challenging a career in dance can be. It is an intense career with many years of commitment and can end early in life.

While some dancers have strong support systems, others do not. If they are not in a supportive company or network, dancers can feel alone, isolated and disconnected. The DTRC is the dance community; we are here for dancers, and I am happy to be a part of that support structure.

to shift this perspective and encourage them to experiment and loosen up. I tell dancers, “Be curious; pursue informational interviews and job shadowing; be creative in career exploration. It is okay not to know. Try this as a creative process.”

For dancers and non-dancers alike, could you offer a few tips on building professional resilience?

One needs to recognize the resilience skills that one already has. It is often challenging for perfectionists and high achievers to look back at what they’ve done. I ask clients to talk about what they’ve gone through in the past (previous transitions) and to describe what skills they applied at that time. “What helped you then—inner qualities, family support? Identify these things.”

Every transition is a different situation in some ways, but we have all been through it before. It’s possible to gain momentum from the backswing.

Some dancers think that life is over if they don’t have their artistic career to define them. During times of transition, some days you wake up excited, and some days you don’t, but these moments in life give opportunity to grow and develop.

What can dancers gain from career counselling?

Individuals who are in specialized careers are often challenged in seeing their transferrable skills. Together, we work to pull out details of their experience, identify personal qualities and skills, and then put more formal language around those skills to name them. This is the career exploration stage. We look at it from the perspective of life transition—not just finding a job—and it is important that this exploration work be done creatively with flexibility and openness.

People who have been so focused, passionate and hardworking can find this exploration stage paralyzing. Dancers can struggle with a mindset in which they are not allowed to make mistakes. I try

She guides individual clients—ranging from transitioning dancers and postdoctoral fellows to mid-career professionals—seeking career and life direction, and facilitates teams through their exploration of interpersonal communication and career development.

ON THE MOVE HELPING DANCERS TAKE FLIGHT Each year, the DTRC produces a series of free professional development events for postsecondary dance students and emerging dance artists of all genres. on the MOVE (danse TRANSIT in Quebec) offers these young dancers the opportunity to connect with their peers, established artists, and the service organizations that exist to support them.

Participants are empowered to pursue their own, unique career path while gaining practical, professional skills to succeed in today’s rapidly changing cultural marketplace.

2015/16 brought OTM programming to nearly 350 dancers across Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Halifax. The DTRC is grateful for the collaboration of dance training institutions and arts service organizations in each of these locations who partner with us to ensure the topics and presenters are truly meaningful for local dancers.

As a small sampling of our programming: in Vancouver, the focus was on connecting with mentors across disciplines in the dance community, demystifying income tax for selfemployed artists, managing stress and the demands of a dance career through nutrition, and creating a career map for one's first year in the field. In Toronto, we were thrilled to work with the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts as a new venue partner. The Sony Centre holds such a rich place in the history of performing arts in Toronto, and functioned as the perfect backdrop for discussions about finding your first professional jobs, the business of dance, opportunities in dance teaching, stress management techniques, budgeting, and the ever-popular Networking Lunch in which dancers can chat directly with artistic mentors about their careers.

I have seen the definitive impact these encounters have had on participating young artists. They are fortunate to have this opportunity at this fragile stage of their dance life; to have a chance to meet, discuss, share and network with invited guests, with their peers and with mentors.

BOARD FAREWELLS THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE Santa Aloi spent 11 years as a BC Board member, wholeheartedly supporting the work of DTRC’s BC office and its staff. As Co-chair of the DTRC’s 25th anniversary BC gala, Santa and her team put on a wonderful event that far exceeded their goals in both fundraising and awareness raising in BC. As a dancer herself, Santa brought a tremendous sense of compassion to all she did on behalf of the DTRC. Wendy Reid packed a great deal into her three years on the Board. With her extensive experience as a cultural executive and a leader within and beyond the dance milieu, Wendy was instrumental to several DTRC initiatives including the incorporation of the DTRC’s Quebec office and DTRC’s advocacy campaign. Her broad and varied network has been vital to the organization both within Quebec and across Canada.

DEVELOPMENT & FUNDRAISING The DTRC is proud to be supported by a dedicated and diverse group of funders: individual donors, foundations, corporate partners and government programs. We are grateful for their enduring understanding of the role that DTRC plays in the lives and careers of professional dancers.

The Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Arts Training Fund continued to provide DTRC with its core funding along with strong support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. We are extremely grateful to all our government funders for their support of the DTRC and also for their commitment to artists and the arts in Canada.

For an organization like the DTRC, the relationship with our individual donors is profound. Their financial support is critical and makes our work possible, but it goes much deeper than dollars and cents.

Their belief in the DTRC nurtures, encourages and validates our mission. We would particularly like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our principal benefactors Lynda Hamilton, and Joan & Jerry Lozinski.

We were honoured to receive our final gift from The Bennett Family Foundation in 2016 as it wound down its operations. We were proud to hear Mr. Bennett’s words: “We wish to demonstrate to you that our admiration for and support of your organization remains strong”.

A CYCLE TO CELEBRATE FROM GRANT RECIPIENT TO DONOR We value all our donors, yet it is particularly special when a gift comes from a former dancer who benefited from DTRC services. For example, in 2015/16, we were delighted to receive a gift of $1,000 from Robert Pleschke, a former Royal Winnipeg Ballet dancer who received DTRC support to pursue his studies in Electrical Engineering at Red River College.

ABOUT THE DANCER TRANSITION RESOURCE CENTRE Founded in 1985, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre (DTRC) is a national, charitable organization dedicated to helping dancers make necessary transitions into, within, and from professional performing careers. We also operate as a resource centre for the dance community and general public and support activities that improve the socioeconomic conditions of artists across the country.

As a world leader in dancer transition, we are active participants in international conferences and research initiatives and help drive change within the dance community.
