ELISA DE LA ROSA

I am the Artistic Director of the TWU Dance International Dance Company. At TWU, I teach contemporary and cultural dance techniques, choreography, theories of teaching dance, dance improvisation, dance performance, and gendered images in dance performance. Additionally, I

to teaching at Texas Woman’s University, I was a dance educator for 14 years in middle and high school Texas dance programs in Dallas ISD, North Forest ISD, and Aldine ISD.

DCNT: Where did you receive your dance training?

DCNT: Tell us a little about yourself, Elisa.

Elisa: Hello, I am a daughter of migrant farm workers and a granddaughter of Mexican immigrants; a first-generation college graduate and I am originally from a small border town in Donna Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. My roots are from Rio Grande Zacatecas, Mexico.

I am an Assistant Professor of Dance at Texas Woman’s University (TWU), a choreographer,

Elisa: I began my training in a dance studio called Burton School of Dance. I then continued dancing in high school in both the Drill/Dance teams & Color Guard. I studied dance at Texas Woman’s University and received a Bachelor of Arts in Dance with Secondary Teacher Certification from Texas Woman’s University and a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Montclair State University.

DCNT: What made you decide to form your own company and what kind of company is it?

Elisa: I decided to form De La Rosa Dance Company because I was hungry to see more

works where I could say I see myself. I strive to create work where dancers too see themselves, and are proud of sharing their identity and culture through dance performances. My current research is Dance of the Latinx Diaspora: PreHispanic Indigenous, Mexican, and Tex-Mex dance forms. I moved from Houston to Denton in 2020, so the dance company is reorganizing and slowly growing.

DCNT: Do you choreograph your own pieces and if so, where do you draw your inspiration?

Elisa: Yes, I do choreograph my own pieces, I love to choreograph when working with dancers. The dancers are too part of the creative process, and we often collaborate and create together. I enjoy creating spaces where dancers can include their individual identities in works, it gives them a sense of ownership and a new sense of life

to the dance works. My inspiration comes from my upbringing in the Rio Grande Valley, my grandmother, and my family’s immigration story.

I also draw inspiration from the music I grew up listening to every day such as Tejano, Tex-Mex, mariachi, and ranchera music. My mom often sang mariachi songs as she was cleaning the house, which has been threaded in me. One of my biggest inspirations for my dance works comes from my time in Mexico. I visited Mexico when I was younger with my mother and grandmother. I remember seeing the women on their knees in the plaza making fresh tortillas. Those experiences are embedded in my dance-making creative process.

DCNT: When is your next performance?

Elisa: We are potentially performing at the Texas Latino/a/x Contemporary Dance Festival in Houston in March of 2023. We recently finished performing at the Bailando International Festival in Corpus Christi, TX, and the National Dance Society Conference in San Antonio, TX. I enjoy traveling with performers and attending festivals and conferences, however, it is an extra expense funding is solely coming from my personal budget. I have future plans on working to apply for arts funding and grants.

DCNT: Now that the State of Texas has added Folklorico to the public schools dance curriculum, how do you see it evolving?

Elisa: I am excited about the state adding Ballet Folklorico to the public school systems. I see more and more dance programs offering Ballet Folklorico in their schools. This is an exciting time

for dance education in Texas as it is creating space for cultural dance forms. I believe that there will be more places for students to perform Ballet Folklorico such as outdoor festivals, community gatherings, celebrations, etc. We are used to seeing dance at Texas schools in concert stages, football fields, and gymnasiums. I know some of our Texas Woman’s University Alumni are the very dance educators that are directing Ballet Folklorico Dance programs such as Karla Hardaway, and Leah Longoria Huggins, what is amazing about these two dance educators is that they are also directing their Dance/Drill teams and dance programs. In Texas cultural dance has not been at the forefront of dance education, I see this as the beginning of a shift, and dance forms such as Ballet Folklorico will be celebrated and taught across the state of Texas.

A Holiday Special • Ballet Concerto

A Holiday Special consists of four ballets based on holiday themes. Each year there is one of several story ballets in the company repertoire presented as the featured piece. This year’s main ballet will be Memories of Frosty, based on the story of Frosty the Snowman. Other works include Hanukkah Flamenco, to celebrate the seasonal holiday, O Holy Night, a ballet based on the Christmas story, and Winterwonderland, a series of duets set to familiar Christmas tunes.

“While the Nutcracker is a wonderful tradition that we would not want to be without, with such an abundance of Nutcrackers we have were inspired to create alternative Christmas ballets”, says Ballet Concerto Artistic Director Webster Dean. “We began the first incarnation of this program in 1988. Since then it has continued to grow, develop, and evolve.”

And how do your students and parents respond to doing a holiday show other than The Nutcracker? ”This program is what we do each year and everyone is happy to be a part of it. The idea of a Nutcracker never comes up”, says Dean. Performances: Wednesday, December 7 at 10:30AM + 7PM | Will Rogers Auditorium, 3401 W. Lancaster in Fort Worth. HOLIDAY PERFORMANCES

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO The Holiday Season in north Texas is known for its numerous Nutcrackers. These local artistic directors chose to take

HOLIDAY PERFORMANCES

Krakatuk is named after The Hard Nut, the story inside the original ETA Hoffmann Nutcracker and Mouse King story. Krakatuk is the hardest nut in the world and a much younger Drosselmeier is searching for it for a King and Queen in distress. It must be found and cracked by a certain boy in a certain way in order to break Madame Mouserink’s curse on their baby princess. Madame is the mother of the Mouse King in The Nutcracker ballet. “The decision to perform Krakatuk came shortly after our studio opened 12 years ago”, says Jennifer Dulin, Artistic Director of Texas Youth Ballet. “We didn’t have enough students for a Nutcracker, and they were all beginners. I wanted to do a holiday performance, but we were light years away from being able to do a Nutcracker I took a screenplay I had written before the studio opened, and hired an actor I knew to provide narration for the rather convoluted plot. We rehearsed in chapters, as the story was being told to Marie on the night before Christmas. This year is our 10th live performance (we did a recorded version during Covid). Our students and their families have loved it so much that when we did The Nutcracker last year, they were disappointed we weren’t performing Krakatuk. I have found that Nutcracker is much easier to market and rehearse (Krakatuk is complicated!), but Krakatuk has it’s charms, and once you know the story of The Hard Nut, you never look at The Nutcracker ballet in quite the same way again.”

Performances: December 3 at 7PM | December 4 at 2PM | McKinney North High School Auditorium, 2550 Wilmeth Road, McKinney, TX 75071 | Tickets: texas-youth-ballet-events.ticketleap.com/krakatuk/

Espresso Nutcracker • Dallas Black Dance Academy

The Espresso Nutcracker is much like the original Nutcracker except for narration to unlock the mystery of the story, Africa added to the Land of Sweets, and excerpts from Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite. In its fifth year, Academy Director Katricia Eaglin says it provides an opportunity for the students to perform lead roles and spices up the holidays: “Our students and parents are excited each year for The Espresso Nutcracker.”

Performances: Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 7PM | The Majestic Theatre in Dallas, Texas. Details at DBDT.com.

bumble bees, spiders, a Dew Drop Fairy, the Arctic Wind, and Snowflakes. She traverses the Sea of Miracles where Emma tangles with Seaweed, Jellyfish, Mermaids, and eventually meets Poseidon and his Sea Maiden. Emma receives the gift of dance from the Princess and is greeted by Arabian dancers, Rockettes, a Peacock, and more. The story ends with Emma grown up with a dance studio of her own.

Lisa Racina, Artistic Director of Denton City Contemporary Ballet, decided to produce a different type of holiday show because her school has dancers that excel in all dance forms and she loves to choreograph for different techniques. There was already a Nutcracker being performed in the Denton community, so it seemed like a great idea. This year marks the show’s 24th year.

As to how students and parents have responded to doing a holiday show other than The Nutcracker: Racina says: “I have ‘checked in’ over the years with our dancers and their families, and they LOVE A Gift for Emma! They like that their dancers are performing the traditional ballet pieces but within the context of a non-traditional narrative. They like the idea that a young girl can work hard, overcome obstacles, and achieve her dream--they appreciate the lessons that the story offers their dancers.” “We all enjoy working on our Nutcracker alternative” say the teachers, dancers, volunteers, and our “Little D” community, who support the production as another ‘only in Denton’ artist-based event— we couldn’t be more proud!”

Performances: Saturday, December 17th at 7:30PM + Sunday, December 18th at 2PM | Texas Woman’s University’s Margo Jones Performance Hall, 1100 Oakland Street, Denton, TX | Tickets: buy.tututix.com/AGiftforEmma.
