DCNT: Tell us a little about yourself... PM: I grew up in Tyler, Texas as an only child. I was married to Wayne, my junior high sweetheart, for more than 40 years before he passed in 2007. I have one son, Matt, and two wonderful grandchildren. I am grateful for the support and encouragement Wayne and Matt always offered–along with all the sequins and rehearsals (I do love sequins!). My parents, Tommy and Claudella, were key to me pursuing dance. They were avid patrons of the arts and in the end drove to Dallas for more than three decades to see all Dallas Ballet Center’s performances. Their tradition was to gift the faculty annually with gardenia corsages from their garden. Backstage at McFarlin smelled “heavenly”! My fifty year journey with Dallas Ballet Center began in 1971 when I went for an Interview with Mary Wilcox at what was then Wilshire Academy of Dance. Matt was 5 years old and went with me to interview. DCNT: Where did you receive your dance training? PM: I began my dance training in 5th grade in Tyler at Ballet Academy with Marcia Grubb, the Director, and studied Ballet and Tap. After high school I attended TCU

Portrait taken while studying at Texas Christian University.

and majored in Dance. I studied with Fernando and Nancy Schaffenburg, Victor Moreno, and Mary Bywaters Cochran. I also studied Vocal Performance— I had been a member of the Acapella Choir in high school and occasionally had served as wedding soloist— so Dance and Vocal Performance went hand in hand for me. DCNT: Of all the many styles of dancing, why did you decide to focus on jazz and tap? PM: Ballet was my dance foundation, and I taught ballet technique for many years, however, I think my love of Musical Theater was the inspiration to focus on those dance disciplines. I grew up singing in my room to soundtracks of The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and South Pacific, to name a few. My parents loved Musical Theater, so I had been exposed at an early age! Seeing all the fabulous musicals with Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and others was a marvelous introduction to Tap and “Singing and Dancing”! DCNT: What dancers had the greatest influence on you growing up and to this day? PM: My Teacher Marcia Grubb, of course... Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Savion Glover, the Nicholas Brothers, Debbie Reynolds, Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell, Gregory Hines, Baryshnikov, and on and on! For Singing and Dancing – Julie Andrews! The Sound Of Music one of my Favorite Musicals. DCNT: What values do you hope to instill in your students? PM: Oh my, that’s a difficult one ! I guess, to continue to love and respect yourself, your fellow dancers, and all the legends that passed down their talent and love of Tap. To perform with respect for your art with style and dignity in costuming and choice of choreography. DCNT: Most memorable dance moment? PM: The day that Mary Wilcox called and said Judy and Brent Klopfenstein were going to be the new owners of Dallas Ballet Center, but only if I agreed to stay on. I always say: “I came with the furniture”. I owe so much love and gratitude to Judy and Brent and my Dallas Ballet Center dance family! DCNT: What’s next? PM: Visiting my Grandchildren! And who knows when you might see me around. I am still planning on tapping and teaching at Dallas Ballet Center… but scaling back a bit.

IN MEMORIAM

Jerry Bywaters Cochran 1936 — 2022 From the guide to the Jerry Bywaters Cochran Dance Collection MA96-1., (Texas/Dallas History & Archives, Dallas Public Library)

Jerry Bywaters Cochran grew up in a Dallas family that was actively involved in the arts. Her father, a nationally recognized painter, was for many years the director of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the predecessor of today’s Dallas Museum of Art. He was also a longtime member of the art faculty of Southern Methodist University. Her mother, a musician by training, had a lifelong interest in dance and was one of the founders of both the Dallas Civic Ballet and the Dallas Dance Council. Among Jerry’s early teachers were Alexandra Danilova and Hanya Holm. After high school she attended the Juilliard School in New York, where her teachers included Martha Graham and Jose’ Limon for modern dance, Anthony Tudor and Margaret Craske for ballet, and Louis Horst and Doris Humphrey for choreography. While at Juilliard she also took classes at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School. She received a Juilliard degree with majors in both modern dance and ballet, and on graduation received an award from the American Guild of Musical Artists as the outstanding graduate in her field. Thereafter, she received a Fulbright fellowship for study in Paris under Marcel Marceau and ‘Etienne Decroux, the noted mimes. As a performer, Jerry appeared in New York, Paris, Washington, and most of the cities in Texas. As a teenage she toured with the Alexandra Danilova Concert Company, and later she danced for two years with the performing company of the Dallas Summer Musicals, where she worked under Franz Allers and George Schaefer. Jerry taught in many settings over the years, including the Juilliard

preparatory division, the Kurt Jooss Folkwangschule, in Essen, Germany, and Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She was the first instructor in stage movement for the Dallas Theater Center and for ten years directed a school devoted exclusively to modern dance in Dallas. In 1968 she inaugurated the modern dance program at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth and remained in charge of that program for seventeen years. She taught master classes for the American Ballet Theatre School in New York, Texas Woman’s University, the Southwest and Pacific Regional Ballet Festivals, and other dance organizations from coast to coast. Her students have joined the dance companies of Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, Alwin Nikolais, and Bella Lewitzky, as well as Pilobolus and Momix. She founded and directed two modern dance companies -- the Dallas Ensemble of Dallas, which gave performing opportunities to the advanced students in her private studio, and the TCU Modern Dance Lab Company, which utilized the advanced modern dance students at TCU. Her choreography has been performed on the Juilliard Concert Series in New York; by the Dallas Civic Ballet, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and the Dance Ensemble of Dallas; in numerous performances at Texas Christian University; and by companies and soloists in Washington, New Orleans, Kansas City, many Texas cities, and Raleigh, North Carolina. For Dallas Theater Center she choreographed Burgess Meredith’s production of the Dylan Thomas play, “Under Milkwood.” She also performed, under the sponsorship of the Theater Center, a solo concert of her own choreography. In 1982 the Fort Worth Art Museum received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to present two of her works, along with two works of New York choreographer Lucinda Childs, in a concert entitled, “Contemporary Choreography: Two Views.” Jerry served on the dance panels of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission on the Arts. She served on the board and as a national officer of the National Association for the Regional Ballet. In 1974 she was asked by the Texas Commission on the Arts to prepare a study on “Objectives for Dance in Texas,” and her articles and reviews have appeared in numerous publications. She served on the artistic advisory boards of Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth, the Dance Council of North Texas, and The International Theatrical Arts Society (TITAS), also of Dallas. She assisted in coordinating dance residencies which, under the sponsorship of the National Endowment for the Arts and other institutions, brought such companies as those of Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, Trisha Brown, Kei Takei, David Gordon, and Alwin Nikolais, to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 1985 she was adjudicator for the Craft of Choreography Conference at the Southwestern Regional Ballet Festival. In 1992, her achievements were recognized on two occasions -- first, by the Dallas Dance Council, which honored her with their annual “Mary” award for her lifetime contribution to dance, then by the TCU dance alumni group, which presented her a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the development of the Department of Ballet and Modern Dance at Texas Christian University. Doris Hering, writing in Dance Magazine, called her “a truly gifted and inspiring teacher.” Other cities have referred to her choreography as “artistic creativity of the highest order” and called her “Texas’ leading exponent of modern dance.” A German critic once wrote of her, “Ein Wirblewind Kam Aus Texas,” (“A whirlwind out of Texas”). Jerry was predeceased by her parents, Jerry and Mary Bywaters, her brother, Dick Bywaters, her husband, Calloway Cochran and her daughter, Mary Cochran. She is survived by her son, Robert Cochran, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and the Bywaters family. The family would like to especially thank CNC Home Care and their staff of caregivers. Please direct donations in Jerry’s name to the organizations listed above or charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life for Jerry Bywaters Cochran will be held May 14, 2022 at Northhaven Methodist Church in Dallas at 11am. 7 • DANCE NORTH TEXAS • MAY – JULY 2022

The word ‘Arangetram’ translates to ascending the stage. An arangetram, in the beautiful art form of Bharatanatyam, simply means a student’s first formal solo performance, consisting of a repertoire of dances in a traditional setting. This repertoire is called the Margam or a path. This artistic solo performance is a culmination of years of training, determination, commitment, and dedication towards this beautiful traditional art form, by both the teacher or the Guru and the student or the Shishya. This process requires rigorous preparation, stamina, and hours of dedicated practice. This journey of an arangetram, for a student, is quite challenging, as it pushes the student to prioritize school work/ worklife, social life, and extracurriculars. Arangetram is only the beginning of a dancer’s true journey. It helps them understand and appreciate their connection to their roots and their culture. This process is not just about reaching the hearts and souls of the audience or the Rasika, but reaching within and connecting to a higher level of conscience.

Training After completion of formal learning, the student and teacher begin their arangetram journey together. Students are required to have learned all the pieces that go into a typical repertoire or the Margam (path). The length of the training usually varies and is specific to each teacher and student but an average period is about a year to a year and a half.

Orchestra The orchestra for an arangetram mainly consists of the guru (nattuvanar who plays the cymbals for the student), the singer, and the mridangist (mridangam: a barrel shaped double headed drum used for the performance). Other accompanying instruments could include the violin, the flute, and/or the veena. Cost Arangetram expenses can vary depending on how lavish or how simple the family wants it to be. These days, typical expenses range from $10k to $50k. This includes auditorium, costumes, stage decor, orchestra and food. 10 • DANCE NORTH TEXAS • MAY –JULY 2022

Once the dancer has ascended the stage and completed their Arangetram, an even stronger bond is created between the dancer and their art form. It is only the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning and growing. About the Author Sarita Venkatraman is an instructor at the Arathi School of Dance in Plano, Texas, serves as a director on the board of Indian Cultural Heritage Foundation (ICHF), and is a founding member of Indique Dance Company.
