This summer has been a hot one. But despite the heat, people are getting in the last fun activities with friends and family before school starts and things go back to a quiet hum.
Ithought we would end our summer with a fun issue. Because there are a lot of pet lovers, pet parents, it was decided to make this issue all about pets! As a pet parent myself, I love my dogs. They are a part of my family. Sadly, I lost my oldest dog Tanner during Memorial Day weekend. I miss him so much and he was my baby. His sister Mia misses him very much. Our puppy Bo, is just enjoying himself playing with his toys.
I hope you enjoy the stories and tips on how to keep your family pet healthy and feeling good. We will also have our stories from our contributors as well as Mary’s Tips and Ideas. So take in the last days of summer and enjoy the sun but stay hydrated.

An Essential Guide to Healthy Nutrition for Pets
Ensuring your pet receives the right nutrition is crucial for their overall health, energy levels, and longevity. Just like humans, pets require a balanced diet to thrive. Here's a guide to understanding and providing healthy nutrition for your furry friends.
Balanced Diet
A balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health for pets. Here are the key components:
• Protein: Essential for growth, muscle development, and tissue repair. Highquality sources include meat, fish, eggs, and specific plant-based proteins.
• Fats: Provide energy, support cell function, and help in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Sources include fish oil, chicken fat, and flaxseed.
• Carbohydrates: Supply energy and support digestive health. Opt for whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.
• Vitamins and Minerals: Crucial for various bodily functions, including immune support, bone health, and metabolic processes. Ensure the diet includes a variety of sources to cover these needs.
Life Stage and Health Condition Appropriate
Different life stages and health conditions require tailored diets:

Just a Little Bit Furry!
By Jacqueline Johnson, Contributing Writer
Family pets hold a unique and cherished place in our hearts, often becoming as integral to our lives as our own children. Their presence in our homes brings joy, comfort, and companionship, creating a bond that mirrors the deep connections we share with our human family members. Just like children, pets depend on us for their well-being and thrive on the love and attention we provide.
One of the most evident similarities between pets and children is the level of care they require. From feeding and grooming to regular health check-ups, pets need consistent and dedicated care. This responsibility teaches us patience, empathy, and the value of routine—qualities that are equally important in parenting. The daily tasks of caring for a pet can be likened to the nurturing roles we undertake with our children, reinforcing the notion that pets are indeed part of the family.
Moreover, pets, like children, exhibit unique personalities and behaviors. Each pet has its own quirks and preferences, from a dog’s playful antics to a cat’s aloof charm. These characteristics endear them to us, much like the distinct personalities of our children. We celebrate their milestones, from a puppy’s first successful command to a kitten’s first playful pounce, just as we do with our children’s achievements.
The emotional bond we share with our pets is profound. Pets offer unconditional love and loyalty,

providing emotional support and companionship in ways that are remarkably like human relationships. They sense our moods, offer comfort during difficult times, and share in our joys, creating a deep emotional connection that enriches our lives.
Furthermore, pets play a crucial role in teaching children about responsibility, empathy, and compassion. Growing up with a pet helps children understand the importance of caring for another living being, fostering a sense of accountability and nurturing.
This relationship can significantly impact a child’s development, promoting emotional intelligence and social skills.
In essence, family pets are more than just animals; they are beloved members of our households. They bring joy, teach valuable life lessons, and provide a sense of comfort and belonging. The bond we share with our pets is a testament to the fact that they are, in many ways, just like our children—cherished, loved, and irreplaceable.

Having pets plays a big part in your life. They are your companion, they keep you safe, they love you unconditionally and they make you laugh and happy.
Here are some ideas on how to spoil your best furry friend:
1. Plan Special Outings: DOG PARK VISITS: Spend extra time at your local dog park where your dog can play and socialize.
2. Pamper Your Pup: SPA DAY: Treat your dog to a grooming session or a dog spa day.
3. Health and Wellness: VET CHECKUP: Schedule a wellness checkup to ensure your dog is in top health.
4. Gifts and Toys: NEW TOYS: Surprise your dog with new toys or puzzles to keep them entertained.

Safety At the Dog Park
Dog Parks are a fun place for your fur baby to make new friends and have fun. It’s also a place for exercise. But you have to make sure steps are taken to ensure your dog is safe while having fun.
These are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Before entering, observe the dogs and owners already inside. Avoid parks with overly aggressive dogs or inattentive owners.
2. Use the designated entrance areas to leash and unleash your dog to prevent altercations.
3. Keep a close eye on your dog at all times. Be ready to intervene if play becomes too rough or if there are signs of aggression.
4. Use parks that have separate areas for small and large dogs to prevent accidental injuries.
5. Understand dog body language. Watch for signs of stress, fear, or aggression, such as stiff posture, growling, or baring teeth.
6. Ensure your dog has access to fresh water. Bring your own collapsible bowl if the park doesn't provide water facilities.
7. Always pick up after your dog to maintain a clean environment and reduce the spread of disease.
8. Visit the park during off-peak hours if your dog is new to the dog park or if you want a calmer environment.
9. Avoid bringing toys and treats that can cause possessiveness and fights among dogs.
10. If your dog seems uncomfortable or if the environment becomes unsafe, leave the park promptly.
By following these steps, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for your dog at the dog park.
Wagging Tails and Warm Hearts: The Benefits of Dog Companionship
By Damita Miller-Shanklin
In our bustling and vibrant community, the warmth of a wagging tail and the joy of a furry friend can bring enormous happiness and numerous benefits. Having a dog is not just about having a pet; it’s about welcoming a loyal companion, a playful partner, and a loving family member into your life.
Dogs have an incredible way of connecting with us on a deep, emotional level. They sense our moods, comfort us when we’re down, and celebrate with us in our happy moments. This bond is particularly powerful in a community like ours, where family and connection are at the heart of our values. If you have a fur baby, you understand when you have a tough day at work,
or you are sad about something, coming home to your dog or cat instantly makes you feel good. They look at you and you know they will make you feel better.
Having a dog can significantly improve your physical and mental health.

Regular walks with your dog ensure you stay active, which helps in maintaining a healthy weight, improving cardiovascular health, and reducing stress levels. The simple act of petting a dog can lower your blood pressure and release those feel-good hormones that boost your mood. isolation in seniors. The presence of a dog can offer emotional support and a sense of purpose. Interaction with dogs has been shown to increase feelings of happiness and well-being. This can help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety in seniors.
For families with children, having a dog can be a great way to teach responsibility and empathy. Kids learn the importance of regular feeding, grooming, and exercise for their furry friends. They also develop a sense of compassion and understanding as they care for their dog’s needs and feelings.
Dogs are great social connectors. Walking your dog in the neighborhood or visiting a local dog park can lead to new friendships and a stronger sense of community. Our four-legged friends often spark conversations and bring people together, fostering a supportive and connected and fun environment.
Dogs provide an added layer of safety and security. Their keen senses and protective nature make them excellent watchdogs, alerting you to any unusual activity around your home. This sense of security can be especially comforting in our community.
Consider adopting a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. Many dogs are in need of loving homes, and by adopting, you’re giving them a second chance at life. Plus, adopting a dog can be a rewarding experience, knowing that you’ve made a difference in an animal’s life. The animal shelters have been overloaded with dogs and cats. By adopting you are giving a pet a new life and family to love.

Whether you’re looking to improve your health, teach your children valuable life lessons, stay active, simply enjoy the unconditional love that a dog offers, having a dog is a beautiful journey worth embarking on. • Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
• Dehydration
• Excessive drooling
• Fever
• Bright red, gray, purple, or bluish gums
• Lack of urine
• Rapid pulse

We still have time to travel and enjoy our hot summer days!!
Enjoy your family and your pets !!
Texas Leash Law
Walking your dog in the early morning or evening is a fun way to enjoy your pet. It’s easily a family friendly outing.
Many Texas municipalities have enacted leash laws (also known as “running-at-large” laws), which require that dogs be leashed at all times unless they are in a designated off-leash area or they are fenced in on private property.
Consult your county office for information regarding rules and regulations in your neighborhood.
REMINDER: THE PAVEMENT IS HOT!!!
Protect your dog paws from the hot pavement.
Shop online or at your favorite pet store for paw shoes designed to protect paws and avoid burning.
Your dog will thank you !!

Special homemade dog treats! Many dogs love carrots, apples, and peanut butter. So this recipe combined their favorite flavors into a special treat just for them. Make sure to use natural peanut butter with no added salt, sugar, or other ingredients. Keep extra treats stored in the fridge.
INGREDIENTS
• 1¼ cups grated carrots
• 1¼ cups quick-cooking oats
• 1 cup grated apple
• ½ cup natural peanut butter
• 2 eggs
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F
2. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
3. Mix carrots, oats, and apple together in a large bowl. Whisk peanut butter and eggs together in a second bowl; pour into the oat mixture and stir until thoroughly combined.
4. Drop 1½ tablespoonfuls of batter onto the prepared baking sheets. Use your hands to flatten each scoop to a thickness of 1/2 inch.
5. Bake in the preheated oven until treats are firm to the touch and begin to brown on the bottom, 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool briefly on the baking sheets before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
• Adults: Need a balanced diet to maintain health and energy levels.
• Seniors: May benefit from lower calorie intake, joint supplements, and easily digestible ingredients.
• Health Conditions: Specialized diets may be necessary for pets with allergies, obesity, kidney disease, diabetes, etc.
Quality Ingredients
The quality of ingredients in your pet's food is paramount:
• Meat as a Primary Ingredient: Look for pet foods that list meat (chicken, beef, fish) as the first ingredient.
• Avoid Fillers: Minimize or avoid fillers like corn, soy, and wheat, which provide little nutritional value.
• Natural Preservatives: Prefer foods preserved with natural substances like vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) over artificial preservatives.
Proper Feeding Practices
Good feeding practices are essential for maintaining your pet's health:
• Portion Control: Feed the appropriate amount based on your pet’s size, age, and activity level to prevent obesity.
• Consistent Feeding Schedule: Maintain regular feeding times to help with digestion and routine.
• Fresh Water: Always provide access to clean, fresh water.
Regular Monitoring and Adjustments
Regular monitoring of your pet’s diet and health ensures they receive optimal nutrition:
• Vet Consultations: Schedule regular check-ups to adjust diet based on health changes and ensure nutritional needs are met.
• Observe Changes: Monitor weight, coat condition, energy levels, and stool
quality to detect any nutritional deficiencies or excesses.
Consideration of Special Diets
For pets with specific dietary needs, consider special diets:
• Grain-Free or Limited Ingredient: Ideal for pets with specific allergies or sensitivities.
• Homemade Diets: Ensure they are wellbalanced and vet-approved to provide all necessary nutrients.
By focusing on these aspects, you can ensure that your pet receives the best possible nutrition, tailored to their individual needs. A healthy diet will support their overall well-being, keeping them active and happy for years to come.

Before We Go ...
Anytime you lose a loved one you lose a part of yourself. It is no different when you lose your fur baby. I lost Tanner who was my baby fur boy over the Memorial Day weekend. He was 16 years old. He was a beautiful Maltese Poodle. He had been with our family since he was a baby. His sister, from the same mother, came shortly after. She misses him tremendously.
He was quiet but loved to snuggle. He enjoyed laying around with his sister Mia and living a good life. He will always be in our hearts and minds. We have lost other fur family members over the years. With each loss we remember each of them with love.
So enjoy the moments with your fur baby and love them with kindness. I miss Tanner so much but he lived a great life and he loved us. Rest in Peace Tanner and I know you are in doggie heaven.
