On July 29, 1989, a major ceremony in honor of Santa Marta was to be held in the church of Ribarteme Vigo. The opportunity was too good to miss for the artist, who happened to be taking part in a nearby exhibition on art and death. He decided to infiltrate the ceremony in a coffin. The festival in honor of Santa Marta gradually turned into a real funeral ceremony… The priest switched agendas, the village band, primed to play some paso doble, improvized requiems, and mourning women sobbed quietly…

Lots of artists have toyed with the make-believe of their own death, but never has death taken them so close to the grave. The announcement of Gianni Motti’s death appeared the very same day in the regional newspaper on July 29, 1989, as he layed in an open coffin in the church of Ribarteme Vigo (Spain). His presence did not disturb the contemplative hush of the villagers, even if, on that particular day, they had turned out in force to celebrate Santa Marta, their patron saint.

The ceremony got under way, the priest blessed the statue and the young deceased man, then the crowd spilled into the streets of Ribarteme, forming a procession to follow Gianni’s coffin to the cemetery. With his eyes closed and his face motionless and impassive, Motti heard all the chanting, the music, 8

the prayers and the whispered remarks – “He looks so young”– as the cortège wound its way along in the sun. Little by little, but without his face betraying the slightest feeling, Gianni Motti grew anxious. His awareness of reality was becoming blurred: he was living his own burial. Time stretched immeasurably, and the procession carried on with its chanting, prayers and whispers.

Finally the procession was over. The cortège and the deceased entered the cemetery. The coffin was set down close to a hole dug for a deceased person due to be buried the next day.

Silence fell. The priest started to recite the prayers for the final farewell. Tears flowed. The cemetery was awash with emotion. The assistants bearing the coffin were anxious, not even sure anymore whether Gianni was alive or dead. One of them stooped and whispered into his master’s ear: “What now?” Motti was in an impasse.

Something had to be done, and fast.

A few minutes passed, there was a sigh, a silence, and then Gianni Motti tried to slip discreetly out of his coffin. The moment of frozen amazement was short-lived. People instantly struggled to touch the miraculously healed man!

With uncontrollable emotion, people reached out, grabbed, clutched, clung and tore. All Gianni Motti could try and do was steal away, terrified, flee and “vanish into thin air” for a few days…

Le 29 juillet 1989, en l’église de Ribarteme, Vigo, devait se dérouler une grande cérémonie en l’honneur de Santa Marta. Le morceau était trop beau pour échapper à l’artiste qui était dans la région pour participer à une exposition sur l’art et la mort. Il décide alors de s’infiltrer dans la cérémonie dans un cercueil. La fête en l’honneur de Santa Marta devient petit à petit une authentique cérémonie funèbre… Le curé change de programme, la fanfare, prête à jouer des paso doble, improvise des requiems, des pleureuses se lamentent doucement…

Beaucoup d’artistes ont joué avec la fiction de leur propre mort, mais jamais elle ne les a menés si près de la tombe.

L’annonce du décès de Gianni Motti était parue le jour même dans le journal régional. Et le 29 juillet 1989, il repose là, cercueil ouvert dans l’église de Ribarteme, Vigo (Espagne). Sa présence ne trouble pas le recueillement des habitants du village, même si ce jour-là ils étaient venus en nombre pour célébrer Santa Marta, leur sainte protectrice.

La cérémonie commence, le curé bénit la statue et le jeune mort, puis la foule envahit les rues de Ribarteme, suivant en procession jusqu’au cimetière le cercueil de Gianni. Motti, paupières fermées, visage impassible, entend les chants, la musique, les prières et les chuchotements – “Il a l’air si jeune” – la

marche s’allonge sous le soleil. Peu à peu, sans que son visage puisse montrer la moindre émotion, Gianni Motti se trouble. La conscience de la réalité s’estompe : il vit son enterrement. Le temps dure, s’étire, et la marche continue avec ses chants, ses prières et ses chuchotements.

Fin de la procession. Le cortège et le mort entrent dans le cimetière. On dépose le cercueil près d’un trou creusé pour un défunt qui devait être enterré le lendemain. Le silence se fait.

Le curé commence les prières du dernier adieu. La foule a les larmes aux yeux. Une grande émotion règne dans le cimetière. Les assistants qui portaient le cercueil sont troublés et ne savent même plus si Gianni est mort ou vivant. L’un d’eux se baisse et chuchote à l’oreille de son maître : “Et maintenant ?” Motti se trouve dans un cul-desac. Il faut réagir vite. Quelques minutes, un soupir, un silence et Gianni Motti tente de sortir discrètement du cercueil. Le moment de stupeur est de courte durée : il faut toucher le miraculé ! Dans un saisissement incontrôlable, les mains se tendent, attrapent, pincent, accrochent, déchirent. Gianni Motti ne peut que chercher à se dérober, effrayé, à s’enfuir et à “disparaître” pour quelques jours…

The recent complaint by the Agence France-Presse news agency against Gianni Motti’s series of photographs deprived visitors to the 14th Visa pour l’image (the International Photojournalism Festival in Perpignan) of these images. The room was empty. Instead of Gianni Motti’s works, a letter from the AFP’s legal department requesting the cancellation of the exhibition was displayed.

With “Collateral damage”, Gianni Motti finds himself once again at the heart of a new polemic energetically led by the media, who wasted no time in relaying the accusations made against him. The facts: in spring 2001, Gianni Motti went to the headquarters of the AFP and selected ten images of the war in the Balkans. There were no soldiers or tanks, just verdant landscapes with, here and there, in the middle of isolated houses, tenuous yet tangible signs (smoke, explosions) evoking the conflict. Gianni Motti bought these images, which had never been published beforehand as they were not representative of war. He enlarged them, deliberately removed their original title and signed them. The series thus changed in status and character: it now resembled bucolic, misty landscapes with a hint of “Sleeping Beauty” about them. The AFP protested, making it known that there had been an infringement of copyright and that Motti should have purchased “reproduction rights”.

The Motti exhibition was eagerly awaited because, for the first time in fourteen years, among hundreds of photojournalists, Visa was set to welcome an internationally renowned “visual” artist, an habitué of galleries rather than newspapers. Vincent Pécoil has offered a fine analysis of the incriminated series and underlines that the photographs in Motti’s name “seem to be a reconstruction evoking an irrepressible impression of facticity.”

Gianni Motti consigns the iconic stereotypes of war (the victims, fighters, clashes, etc.) to oblivion, restoring all of the ambiguity of war images and opening up a range of potential interpretations. It is therefore not surprising that he does not retain their original caption, as the documentary aspect of these images no longer interests him. Moreover, the term “collateral” that he uses as a title for these “new” images clearly indicates that they fall outside the framework of images of war: pictures that no paper would have wanted to publish because of their lack of sensationalism, bordering on the insignificant. For all that, the artist’s attitude is in no way scornful toward its subject; he simply offers a new way of reading and interpreting the issues at stake. Pécoil – playing on the expressions images of war/war of images – reminds us that images from war reporters, prisoners of their conditions of reception, correspond to criteria whose primary purpose is to make belligerence

immediately visible and apprehensible.

The “Collateral damage” series displays a casual pacifism and according to Pécoil “prevents the image from being automatically understood as a war image” and provides the proof of their “non-use in the normal press world.” As an artist, Gianni Motti often slips into the heart of the media system, flouting its rules all the better to reveal its internal logic. In doing so, he does not stop at mere observation and critique, but amplifies the phenomena of communication to create new ones, imbued with fresh perspectives with less sharply defined contours.

La récente plainte de l’Agence FrancePresse à l’encontre de la série de photographies de Gianni Motti a privé les visiteurs de la 14e édition de Visa pour l’image (Festival international du photojournalisme à Perpignan) de ces images. La salle était vide. A la place des œuvres de Gianni Motti était affichée une lettre du service juridique de l’AFP, qui demandait l’annulation de l’exposition.

Avec “Dommages collatéraux”, Gianni Motti se retrouve au cœur d’une nouvelle polémique menée tambour battant par les médias qui se sont empressés de relayer les accusations dont il fait l’objet.

Les faits : au printemps 2001, Gianni Motti se rend au siège de l’AFP et sélectionne dix images de la guerre dans les Balkans. Pas de soldats, pas de chars, il s’agit de paysages verdoyants avec, ici et là, au milieu de maisons isolées, des signes ténus mais tangibles (fumée, explosions) évoquant le conflit. Gianni Motti achète ces images qui n’avaient jamais été publiées auparavant car non représentatives d’une guerre. Il les agrandit, écarte sciemment leur légende d’origine et les signe. La série change alors de statut et de nature : elle ressemble maintenant à des paysages bucoliques et brumeux, aux allures de “belles aux bois dormants”. L’AFP s’insurge, fait savoir qu’il y a eu violation des droits d’auteur et que Motti aurait dû s’acquitter de “droit de reproduction”.

L’exposition Motti était attendue parce

que, pour la première fois en quatorze éditions, parmi des centaines de photojournalistes, Visa devait accueillir un artiste “plasticien” de réputation internationale, habitué des galeries et non des journaux. Vincent Pécoil analyse finement la série incriminée et souligne que les photographies signées Motti “donnent l’impression d’être une reconstitution suscitant une irrépressible impression de facticité“. Gianni Motti relègue les stéréotypes emblématiques de la guerre (les victimes, les guerriers, l’affrontement…) aux oubliettes pour redonner à l’image de guerre toute son ambiguïté et ouvrir ses potentialités d’interprétation. Ce n’est donc pas étonnant qu’il ne retienne pas leur légende originelle, l’aspect documentaire de ces images n’étant plus son propos. Par ailleurs, le terme “collatéral“ qu’il utilise pour titrer ces “nouvelles“ images désigne bien qu’elles jouent sur le hors-champ de l’image de guerre : des images qu’aucun journal n’aurait eu envie de reproduire de par leurs pauvres effets de sens, frôlant l’insignifiance. Pour autant, l’attitude de l’artiste n’est nullement méprisante à l’égard de son sujet, il en déplace simplement les enjeux et la lecture. Pécoil, jouant des formules images de guerre/guerre des images, rappelle que les images des reporters de guerre, prisonnières de leurs conditions de réception, répondent à des critères dont le principal vecteur est de rendre

l’agressivité visible, appréhensible immédiatement. La série “Dommages collatéraux” affiche un pacifisme désinvolte et selon Pécoil, “empêche cette compréhension automatique de l’image comme image de guerre“ et fournit la preuve de leur “inexploitation dans le monde de la presse normale”.

Artiste, Gianni Motti s’insère souvent au cœur du système des médias, dont il déjoue les règles pour mieux mettre à nu leurs logiques internes. Ce faisant, il ne s’arrête pas simplement au constat et à la critique, il amplifie des phénomènes de communication pour en créer de nouveaux, chargés de nouvelles perspectives aux contours plus flous.
