A Note from Music Director Fabio Luisi
I am delighted to begin my fourth season as Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. It is a season with an incredible range of voices, styles, perspectives and projects.
Each year it is a joy to welcome guest artists to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Some of the top artists working today — Emanuel Ax, Rudolf Buchbinder, Maxim Vengerov, Jan Lisiecki, Matthias Goerne and Kelley O’Connor — will return to Dallas, and we will welcome celebrated artists who are making their DSO debuts including Isabel Leonard, Anthony McGill and Jeremy Denk. It is always special to see our principal players in the solo position, and this season Alexander Kerr, Nathan Olson and David Buck will all perform concertos with the orchestra.
When I began my tenure, I wanted to turn a spotlight on American composers, some forgotten artists and some neglected works by composers we know. This year we will present music by Gershwin and Styne alongside pieces from William Dawson and James P. Johnson, a frequent collaborator of Bessie Smith. The sounds of bluegrass will be heard along with jazz influences. The legacy of Benny Goodman is present in Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, paired with an overture by William Schuman, the winner of the first Pulitzer Prize in music and legendary educator.
This season we will present five world premiere works. Jessie Montgomery will join us for a new orchestral work in October. Celebrated cellist Inbal Segev will join the DSO for the debut of Ukrainian composer Victoria Vita Polevá’s cello concerto in November. The DSO will premiere a double concerto for violin and trumpet by Dallas-based composer Xi Wang. The final Texas Instruments Classical Series concert will feature a new work by Andrea Basevi based on poems by Emily Dickinson and featuring the Dallas Symphony Children’s Chorus.
Throughout my career, I have admired the work of Austrian composer Franz Schmidt. His monumental achievement, the oratorio The Book with Seven Seals, is an astounding and thrilling work for solo singers, chorus, organ and orchestra. I am thrilled to be able to present this piece during the year of Schmidt’s 150th anniversary.
In May 2021, the Dallas Symphony invited musicians of The Metropolitan Opera orchestra to Dallas to perform Mahler’s First Symphony. It was an unforgettable event and a ray of hope in very dark times. This season, we return to Mahler, the first time I will conduct one of his symphonies with the DSO alone. Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is a favorite of mine and a favorite of audiences.
The highlight of this season and into next is Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle. The scope and scale of this project is incredible, even when presented without staging. Though his preludes and interludes for the operas stand as core repertoire for symphony orchestras, it is only when you marry the voices and the drama of the story to the music that you understand Wagner’s total work. We will welcome renowned singers to our stage to present this event as the first time an American symphony orchestra has done the complete Ring Cycle. It will be something special to me, and I know for our audiences as well.
But this, like any other season, needs the most important element of all — our audience. We look forward to welcoming you to the Meyerson to enjoy these performances throughout the 2023/24 season.
Sincerely,
Fabio Luisi MUSIC DIRECTOR Louise W. & Edmund J. Kahn Music DirectorshipRecorded live at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, our NEXT STAGE digital concert series provides up-close, intimate glimpses of the transformational performances of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Copland’s Concerto swings in the hands of New York Philharmonic’s brilliant Principal Clarinet, Anthony McGill, while the DSO and DSO Chorus, led by Fabio Luisi, enthrall with a quintessential Romantic subject: the battle for the soul of Faust. You’ll recognize the protagonists by their music — heroic, lyrical, infernal — and be moved by the tenor solo and all-male “mystical chorus” exalting woman-eternal.

RACHMANINOFF Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44
The Symphony No. 3 is unmistakably Rachmaninoff — with soaring melodies, shattering climaxes, and the dark rumblings of his signature Dies irae from the Mass for the Dead. But once the clouds have lifted, the Symphony ends in jubilant, life-affirming exclamations. Also on the program, Barber’s celebratory organ toccata (watch for some fancy footwork on the Lay Family Concert Organ) and a new work that honors JFK upon the 60th anniversary of his passing. Inspired by President Kennedy’s speech eulogizing poet Robert Frost at Amherst College in 1963, the DSO will be one of the first orchestras to perform this work following its world premiere this summer.

BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 83
In a tongue-in-cheek quip, Brahms described his Second Piano Concerto as “a tiny, tiny pianoforte concerto, with a tiny, tiny wisp of a scherzo.”
Approaching the dimensions of a symphony, full of nobility and brilliance, the monstrously difficult work will be performed by the world-renowned Austrian pianist, Rudolf Buchbinder.
The rest of this program highlights uniquely American artistry and composition, beginning with the world premiere of a new orchestral work by Leonard Bernstein Award-winning composer, violinist and educator, Jessie Montgomery. Then, traditional American musical genres are blended with classical orchestral stylings in Antheil’s bold and complex A Jazz Symphony and Chesky’s ode to Americana and folk, American Bluegrass.

At just 24 years old, Strauss is at the top of his game in a counter-intuitive portrait of the notorious lover Don Juan — not the libertine, but a world-weary hero searching for the perfect woman. The music is intense, though not without passages of sensuous love music. The score demands extraordinary virtuosity from the orchestra, especially the horns with their brilliant signature horn calls. Led by the incomparable conductor, Kirill Karabits, this program also features works by fellow Ukrainian artists, including a world premiere by the award-winning Victoria Vita Polevá and a contemporary piece by Anna Korsun that recently premiered in 2023.

Is Tchaikovsky’s searing final work — shrouded in mystery — his farewell to the world? You will decide. The music begins in the bassoon’s lowest register — dark and melancholy, with tumult and anguish to follow, but also a waltz with an offbeat rhythm. The tone of this expressive program is established right from the start, with the pairing of Akutagawa’s evocative Triptyque and Britten’s rarely performed but powerful Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra.

Sibelius’s stylistic strengths are on full display in a program opened by his adventurous tone poem En saga and technically challenging Violin Concerto. Of his late-Romantic work, Sibelius wrote: “I begin already dimly to see the mountain that I shall certainly ascend. God opens his door for a moment and his orchestra plays the Fifth Symphony.” Inspired by a silver-ribbon-like flight of sixteen swans, the spellbinding finale ends with six crashing chords, each separated from the next by a stunning silence. At this concert, Donald Runnicles returns to lead your celestial orchestra — the DSO.

Showing off the power and majesty of “the king of instruments,” Bradley Hunter Welch is at the Lay Family Concert Organ when the DSO, led by Fabio Luisi, performs Saint-Saëns’s grand Romantic “Organ Symphony.” The composer told the commissioning body that it “will be terrifying, I warn you.” But do not be afraid; you’ll be safely guided to the blazing C Major chord that sets the last movement in motion. Also featured on this program is a piece written by local SMU professor and composer Xi Wang. The unusual instrument pairing of the trumpet and violin in Year 2020 reflects the work’s inspiration from the tumultuous and unprecedented world created in the wake of the global pandemic.

The DSO, soloists, massive chorus, and organ solos on the Lay Family Concert Organ depict the breaking of the seals, the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the seven trumpets summoning souls to the Last Judgment, and, finally, the message of salvation and an ecstatic “Hallelujah.” Monumental, riveting, unforgettable! For intense emotions and radiant beauty, nothing can surpass Mahler’s Fifth. A movement marked “tempestuously. The DSO Presents the Complete Wagner Ring Cycle in Concert
The Ring of the Nibelung — the crowning glory of Romantic opera — is not to be missed! DSO audiences are among the lucky few who will ever get to experience it live with the full power of more than 100 orchestra musicians and singers on stage.
As a DSO subscriber, you receive advanced access to the first two concerts in the cycle.
Das Rheingold * and Die Walküre will be performed in the spring of 2024. 2023/24 subscribers will also receive priority access to the full cycle being performed in order in the fall of 2024. Don’t delay locking your seats in for this monumental event!
Performing opera-in-concert is part of my artistic plans at the DSO. Opera is an important part of the repertoire, and in addition, by presenting opera, we learn to listen closer and develop even further as an ensemble. We have performed both Salome and Eugene Onegin here in Dallas.
Wagner’s Ring is a leap forward from those works in scale and complexity, but it is a project that will be beautiful and important for the orchestra and for the audiences.”

Riveting. Virtuosic. Diabolical. Daredevil. Terrifying. Words that describe both Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto and Walton’s first symphony. The DSO is excited to welcome Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer with Rakesh Chaurasia to the stage. NPR stated they are “simply the best at what they do... They are world-class masters of the banjo, the bass fiddle and the tabla [who] conquered mere technical prowess long ago.” There’s a bit of the sorcerer in Fleck (banjo), Hussain (tabla), Meyer (double bass), and their special guest Chaurasia (bansuri-Indian flute). These incredible musicians move from bluegrass to Western classical to Indian classical to jazz, transmuting genres into something uniquely their own — it is music that transcends description, ineffable, indefinable, and very beautiful.

In an intimate performance the DSO brings Ludmilla, an opera by Erich Ziegler (score) and Willy Rosen (libretto), to Dallas. The opera was originally performed for the Schutzstaffel in 1944 by the Gruppe Bühne (cabaret artists imprisoned at Westerbork Concentration Camp in the Netherlands) — two months later, all forms of entertainment were banned. This moving production weaves together the comedy created for the SS’s entertainment with memories drawn from prisoners at Westerbork that were ultimately murdered in Auschwitz.
