Welcome Enrico & Blake The Dallas Symphony Orchestra welcomes two new conductors this season. Let’s get to know Enrico Lopez-Yañez and Anthony Blake Clark.

Enrico Lopez-Yañez

Principal Conductor, Dallas Symphony Presents Nancy A. Nasher & David J. Haemisegger Chair

HOMETOWN: San Diego, California INSTRUMENTS: Trumpet, Drums

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR INSTRUMENT? My parents are both musicians. My mother is a pianist/composer/choir director, and my father is an opera singer. I started off with my mother as my first piano teacher, and though I loved music, it was rough living with my private teacher! So, I decided to pick up the trumpet and drums, two things my mother knew nothing about! HOW DID YOU START CONDUCTING? From a young age I was drawn to the idea of conducting because of my love for watching my dad perform opera. The collaboration between singers, dancers, actors and orchestra was magical and at the center of it all was this mysterious person helping keep it all together: the conductor. I love the role of a conductor as a collaborator and motivator who brings people together to inspire their best performance. AS PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR OF THE DALLAS SYMPHONY PRESENTS, YOU ARE LEADING MORE POPULAR MUSIC AND SHOWS THAN CLASSICAL. HOW DID YOU DISCOVER THIS STYLE OF CONDUCTING? Growing up I attended a lot of musical performances, but they were more often than not classical. We followed my dad around the world singing opera, and I loved it. But I had popular music favorites, too – Backstreet Boys, Blink 182, all the hits of the 90s! Growing up I played in every genre of group I could! From rock bands to boy bands, mariachi to klezmer I just loved making music.

5

I originally studied conducting thinking I would pursue a career in opera specifically. It wasn’t until my first job as Assistant Conductor of the Omaha Symphony that I learned that pop programs existed! Now I am able to combine my love for symphonic music with other genres and headline artists! WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS THAT YOU’VE WORKED WITH ON ORCHESTRA SHOWS? In my time as Principal Pops Conductor with the Nashville Symphony, I have had the opportunity to work with so many artists and, in some cases, create shows with them. For example, Trisha Yearwood lives in Nashville, and we have brought her to the Nashville Symphony twice. Her performances showcase the music of Sinatra as well as her country hits. It’s been a joy to work with artists of all genres including: Nas, Patti LaBelle, Kelsea Ballerini, The Beach Boys, Toby Keith, Kenny G, Portugal The Man and others. Each show has been unique and so much fun! Here in Dallas, I conducted the performances with Aidas Cuevas. We had a great time, and it was the first time she had done a show with an orchestra in years. I then had the opportunity to work with her again in San Francisco recently, and we were able to use our experience together to build an even stronger show – changing a few songs and adding some additional elements. That collaboration with artists is always so fulfilling! WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT DALLAS? The Arts District! I love that Dallas has created a home for the arts centered downtown. It is such a beautiful representation of the community’s passion and support for that arts which is critical now more than ever! I love being able to walk around a part of town and feel immersed in culture. I even have a friend who teaches at Booker T. Washington High School, and I was able to walk over and speak to the students one of the times I was in town to conduct.

Anthony Blake Clark Chorus Director

Jean D. Wilson Chair

HOMETOWN: Dumas, Texas – “but all of the things to do were in Amarillo” INSTRUMENTS: Violin, Piano, Voice

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR INSTRUMENT? I came to singing as part of my high school choir program. You had to choose between band and choir, and I had played violin for a while so I wanted to improve my singing. My high school choir teacher was so supportive; she is like a second mom to me. She helped me fall in love with choral music.

6

HOW DID YOU START CONDUCTING? I went to university to study composition, actually. After starting my studies, and being involved in choir, I was drawn to conducting! Conducting is not that different from composition. You need a birds-eye view understanding of the music, seeing what is happening in all of the music, and I love that you are with so many people and you can see that you are making music together. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT CHORAL MUSIC AND WORKING WITH CHORUSES? We are so lucky in choral music to have the gift of text. It informs our interpretation and can be an inspiration. The stories that are found in choral music are one of the things that fascinate me about the genre. As for the choruses, they combine music and community. We come together each week to work diligently towards the performance of the music, working to achieve a very high level of artistic excellence. That’s very focused work, and the Dallas Symphony Chorus is an excellent ensemble that embraces that work. But we are still a chorus of the community, and gathering with friends every week and spending time catching up in the breaks and laughing before we start is just as valuable. HOW DOES A CHORUS DIRECTOR WORK WITH THE MUSIC DIRECTOR? Fabio Luisi is a very special music director. He is known internationally for his expertise with vocal music, and I have so much respect for him. In my time working with the chorus (Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Merry Widow, Carmina Burana and Catulli Carmina), Fabio has been so generous with his thoughts and experience. For the rehearsals and performances with Fabio, we follow his interpretation of the music. To do that a chorus needs to be uniquely flexible, anticipating many possible interpretations and honing the tools that we have to do that. We work diligently to become artistically excellent as an ensemble, and then we join the orchestra and combine to make these incredible works come to life. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DALLAS? It is so fantastic to work so close to home! I’ve spent many years on the east coast, and this is the first opportunity I have had to work in Texas professionally. Also, I studied in Birmingham in the UK for my graduate work, and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall is an exact acoustical copy of the Meyerson. It’s yet another homecoming! FAVORITE WORKS? IS THERE A BUCKET LIST PIECE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO DO? I am a devoted student of the works of Bach, and I love both the Passions and the B Minor Mass. I also love Mendelssohn’s Eliljah. It was one of my most satisfying experiences musically. For bucket list? I think conducting Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. What an incredible work!

Anthony Blake Clark Chorus Director Jean D. Wilson Chair

Dallas Symphony Chorus Director Anthony Blake Clark (Jean D. Wilson Chair) is a leading voice among his generation of choral conductors. He is in demand by both amateur and professional choral artists because of his “readily apparent musicality” (Baltimore Sun), and his conviction that lives can be changed by participating in classical music, whether on the stage or in the audience. Clark has prepared choral ensembles for prestigious orchestras such as the Rundfunkchor Berlin with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Radio Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Prior to arriving in Dallas, he served as Music Director of the nationally acclaimed Baltimore Choral Arts. Winner of the American Prize in choral conducting and recipient of the Chorus America Alice Parker Award, Clark’s leadership of Baltimore Choral Arts has also been acknowledged with a regional Emmy Award for their documentary “Dreamer” and a second nomination for the American Prize for best choral performance. He annually conducts “Christmas with Choral Arts,” televised on Maryland PBS. He has secured invites to several important festivals and collaborations; after a sold-out UK tour, Baltimore Choral Arts was in residence with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for performances of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony. Recently, they made their Berlin Philharmonie debut and then traveled to perform with the Vienna Radio Orchestra under Marin Alsop. 15

Clark is also the Artistic Director of Bach Vespers in New York City where the Bach Choir and Players present works using historically informed performance practices. In the coming season they will present many cantatas celebrating the 300th anniversary of Bach’s arrival in Leipzig as Thomaskantor, culminating in a performance of the B Minor Mass. He has also served as the James Erb Choral Chair Director of Choruses for the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Clark is equally adept in the orchestral field recently made his debut with the Baltimore and Richmond symphonies. He has also appeared as cover conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra. Legacy and mentorship are paramount to Clark’s musical philosophy; he is a mentee of Marin Alsop, having worked with her extensively and studied with her at the Peabody Institute in the doctoral conducting program. Clark completed a master’s degree under three-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Simon Halsey CBE at the United Kingdom’s University of Birmingham and considers Halsey his lifelong mentor.
