State Fair Classic

September 28, 2024

Cotton Bowl Stadium

The historic HBCU college rivalry made its highly anticipated return to Cotton Bowl Stadium on September 28, as the Prairie View A&M Panthers faced off against the Grambling State Tigers.

The State Fair Classic has been a celebrated tradition at the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium in Fair Park since the 1980s. Every year, this game brings a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, celebrated throughout the community. This year, the game introduced a new twist with a Championship Belt awarded to the winning team as a traveling trophy, adding a unique flair to the postgame celebration. Additionally, ALW Entertainment elevated the experience with a pregame concert featuring Gospel singer and songwriter Deitrick Haddon and a post-game performance by legendary rapper Big Daddy Kane.

The highly anticipated clash between the two HBCU colleges once again electrified the Cotton Bowl Stadium as Grambling State

emerged victorious in a nail-biting finish, defeating Prairie View A&M 34-36. The Tigers leaned heavily on their explosive offense and a late-game defensive stand to secure the win. The game began with a dominating Prairie View capitalizing on early turnovers to take the lead, but Grambling’s quarterback had to step up and showcase poise under pressure, orchestrating a series of second-half drives that tied the game. After an intense battle that stretched into a fifth overtime, Lamagea McDowell secured the win for the Tigers after scoring from a yard out.

With this win, Grambling improved its record in the series and, in front of an electrifying crowd of thousands of fans, claimed the 2024 State Fair Classic Title. Once again, the 2024 State Fair Classic proved why it remains one of the most cherished traditions in college football, adding yet another dramatic chapter to the storied rivalry between these two powerhouse teams.

Red River Rivalry

October 12, 2024

Cotton Bowl Stadium

The Red River Rivalry, one of the most anticipated football games of every college football season, once again returned to Cotton Bowl Stadium on October 12.

The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners met in Dallas once again, and this year it was all Texas. More than 90,000 fans in attendance flooded the historic stadium at the State Fairgrounds for the annual showdown. The Red River Rivalry is not only renowned for the fierce competition on the field but also for the heated fan base that makes the event one of the most electrifying atmospheres in college football.

In this edition of the rivalry, the Longhorns delivered a dominant performance. A one-sided affair, with Oklahoma’s opening field goal being the only points scored in a 34-3 loss. While Oklahoma started with strong defensive and special teams play, it was Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers who quickly took control.

Ewers threw for 199 yards, including a go-ahead touchdown, and also ran for another score, helping Texas overpower the Sooners. Despite a rough start, Ewers finished with a 20-of-29 passing. Texas’ defense was equally dominant, forcing multiple turnovers during the game and limiting the Sooners to just 168 total yards until their final drive, Oklahoma had won five of the last six matchups in the Big 12, but the Longhorns now hold a commanding series lead with 64 wins, 51 losses, and 5 draws, cementing their historical dominance in this rivalry.

This year’s results reinforce the Longhorns’ superiority in the storied rivalry and mark another chapter of the Texas Rivalry that dates back to 1900. Cotton Bowl Stadium remains integral to this tradition, and on December 6, 2023, it was announced that the football game will continue to be played at Fair Park through 2036. More than just a game, the Red River Rivalry is a spectacle that never fails to deliver drama and excitement, solidifying its place as a must-watch event every season.

66th Dallas Regional Spelling Bee

The Dallas Sports Commission partnered with WFAA to present the 66th Annual Dallas Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 9. The partnership allowed WFAA to host the Regional Spelling Bee in its downtown Dallas studios and produced an original presentation of the competition.

To qualify for the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee, contestants had to be in the eighth grade or below and win their individual school bee and local county bee. The contestants represent the best of approximately 100,000 students, from more than 800 schools, across 20 North and East Texas counties.

The Dallas Sports Commission advanced the top two spellers, Faizan Zaki and Sriya Gomatam, on from the Regional Bee to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It was Faizan’s 3rd time competing at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and he ultimately placed 2nd at nationals. Sriya placed 22nd at the national bee.

In addition to hosting the competition, WFAA developed a special presentation of the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee that aired on WFAA+, the station’s free streaming app.
