General Information Name Badges Please wear your name badge at all times while at the conference. If you forget or lose your name badge, we will print a new one at the Registration desk for a $5.00 cash replacement fee.

Meal Options Food and beverage is not included in the registration fee. You will find several concession and food areas around the convention center, especially outside the Arena and inside Hall A. Food may also be available in the Food Court area and at Starbucks and Gormet to Go (both near Hall C). A listing of Dallas dining options is available at the information desk in Lobby A.

Friday Night Concert Certain sponsors will have priority seating at the concert. If you see a seat with a company name on it, this is reserved for that sponsor. All other seats are general seating and first come, first serve. Only individuals who have purchased a daily conference pass and select guests will be allowed in.

Liturgies All the liturgies and prayer services will be held in the Arena.

Information Please see someone at the information desk located in Lobby A for information. You can also ask a volunteer, found throughout the center in blue polo shirts.

Evaluation and Recycle Boxes Please place your completed evaluation in the evaluation boxes provided around the center. We would like to recycle your badge holder. At the end of the conference, please place your plastic holder in these designated boxes as well.

ATM There is an ATM located in Lobby A, near the entrance to the Arena.

Emergencies If you have an emergency, contact either a UDMC staff member or volunteer or the closest security guard. If you are unable to find assistance, call facility dispatch at 214-939-2941. Remember, in an emergency, it is important to stay calm. We do have EMTs on site for this event.

Art Display We will have liturgical art displayed in Lobby A. Please see page 55 for more information. A mosaic is also being pieced together in the middle of Exhibit Hall A. These 6�x6� pieces were donated from artists around the world.

Once the mosaic is completed, it will be donated to The Family Place in Dallas, TX. See page 59 of the program for more information on this special project. Please stop by and check out all of the beautiful art displays and the mosaic project.

A Call for Help: How to Help Women and Children Victimized by Family Violence – A308 In times of crisis, faith leaders are often the first to be contacted by a victim of family violence. In this interactive workshop, you will learn how to safely intervene and how to prevent family violence. Participants will learn the dynamics of family violence, how to identify warning signs of abuse, ways that scripture can be used against a victim by an abuser or batterer, and how to safely intervene with victims and families.

Each workshop attendee will also be given a family violence resource guide for their church.

How to Go from Good to Great! Catechist Training – A310 You are probably good at what you do as a catechist, whether in a Catholic school or in a parish catechetical program. This workshop will take you to the next level – from good to great – by demonstrating hands-on participative activities that can be incorporated into your Religion classes. The activities are appropriate for grades K-8 for either Catholic school or parish catechetical students.

Charity as Justice: Compassion in Perspective – A115-117 This session will investigate the proper relation between compassionate giving and dignified empowerment; that is, the process of moving from charity to action. It will focus on the Church’s seven guiding principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

Responding to the Call to Teach in Catholic Schools – A201 Teaching in Catholic schools occurs at the intersection of teaching, Christian community building, and faith sharing/

modeling. In The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium which quotes the Declaration on Christian Education Gravissimum educationis, we learn that the Church expects “teachers and educators to fulfill a specific Christian vocation and share an equally specific participation in the mission of the Church, to the extent that it depends chiefly on them whether the Catholic school achieves its purpose.”

In addition, we expect teachers in Catholic schools to model faithfully what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Finally, we expect our Catholic school teachers to be effective, professional educators. Indeed, responding to the call to teach in Catholic schools offers serious challenge and grave moral responsibility. This presentation will explore what Catholic educators can do to meet the challenge.

Helping Teens Pray...The Other Six Days of the Week – Ballroom A Imagine helping teens pray more meaningfully. Get teens excited about their spiritual journey and about praying. Finish this workshop with proven principles to challenge teens to lead prayer, and to participate actively in retreats and ministry settings. Reconciling Profession and Faith in Science – A308 A planetary scientist and astrophysicist, who has practiced in his field for over a quarter century, will confront the question of how a working scientist reconciles profession and faith, but with a twist: his life’s journey took him from the Judaism of his childhood to baptism and confirmation in 2007 in the Catholic faith.

Partnering with Parents in Children’s Faith Formation – A306-307 This workshop will examine the right relationship between the family and the catechetical program. Jo will suggest appropriate ways to support families in their primary task of forming their children in faith so that young people can become true witnesses of the Gospel message.

Consultative School Boards, Purpose and Structure – A115117

School Sessions Vatican II called upon the laity to become much more involved in the ministry of Catholic schools including assisting in the governance of the school. Consultative School Boards or Advisory Councils are one answer to assisting the Pastor and Principal in making good decisions on the mission, effectiveness, and viability of the Catholic school.

End-of-Life Documents and Catholic Teaching – A124-127 This session will focus on which documents everyone should have, what the Church teaches about artificial nutrition and hydration, and the ethical position of the Church on topics like assisted suicide.

Farmworkers, Fair Food, and You: Transforming our Food System for Dignity and Justice – A201 Those who pick and produce our food are among the most exploited in our society, facing sub-poverty wages, frequent abuses, and even human trafficking and forced labor. Learn how farmworkers have partnered with Catholics across the country to successfully call on McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Yum Brands (parent company of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC, Long John Silvers, A &W), Whole Foods, and other companies to directly improve the wages and conditions for the farmworkers who pick their tomatoes. These agreements include the first real wage increase for tomato pickers in 30 years, zero tolerance for human trafficking, and an enforceable code of conduct against abuses, including a voice for farmworkers in ensuring respect for their rights. This workshop will explore how Catholics-- including students, schools, and parishes-- can partner with vulnerable workers at the bottom of our food chain to bring about dignity and justice.

Women in Scripture: Their Socio-Cultural Setting – A202 Using biblical quotes and historical background information, this session will explore how women were viewed and treated during the biblical era and offer a perspective for reading their stories in the 21st century.

Come and learn how to express symbolism of the liturgical seasons through basic design principles.

Envisioning the Future of Faith Formation 2020 – A302303 What will congregational faith formation look like in 2020?

How can faith formation flourish in Catholic parishes over the next ten years? We know that the first decade of the 21st century has brought dramatic political, economic, social and cultural changes affecting virtually every dimension of American religious life. Faith formation in 2020 will require new principles, models, approaches, and technologies. Part 1: “Envisioning the Future” explores the driving forces influencing faith formation (social, cultural, religious, demographic, economic, technological) and presents four scenarios for envisioning the future of faith formation in churches from 2010-2020.

Please note: This presentation will consist of two parts. Part I will be completed in Sessions II and Part 2 will be completed in Session IV.

After 30 years of marriage, we submit that it can, and offer real life examples and scenarios, with God in the details, to help make our marriages lowmaintenance.

Celebrating the Four Pillars of our Catholic Faith – A309 Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi of Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, Maryland, reflects on the four pillars of the faith, Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer, as set forth in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults. His books and talk will hopefully help, enliven, and equip RCIA leaders and all who seek faithfully to pass on the treasures of our faith in adult formation.

Diaconal Ministry in the Marketplace: Maintaining a Healthy Balance – A201 During the five years of formation for the deaconate, we were constantly reminded about the delicate balance that must occur between our ministry to the deaconate and our obligations to our family through the sacrament of marriage.

There were the horror stories of men who had put their ministry before their families and the drastic results of those choices. Another delicate balance is the one between a career or job and ministry. It has been often said that the deacon has one foot in the sacred world and one foot in the secular world with both worlds tugging at him very hard. It can be tough trying to balance a successful career with a successful ministry. This presentation will discuss strategies for maintaining this healthy balance in order for deacons to live out the vows of their ordination and also fulfill their responsibility to their families and employer.

The Co-Responsible Parish: The Leadership Factor – A309 How pastoral leaders are providing leadership in today’s parishes is one of the findings of the Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership Project. The six-year study surfaced a series of benchmarks found in spiritually healthy parishes.

Chief among them was the development of ‘total ministering communities,’ in which pastor, staff, and parishioners each provide needed but unique leadership to the parish. Please join us as we explore the evolving leadership paradigm found in Catholic parishes today.

The Building Committee and the Artist: Mission, Collaboration, and Process – A122-123 In commissioned works of sacred art, the Parish Building Committee and the artist work together to draw out the great stories and mysteries of our Catholic Faith. This session will explore what such work calls forth in us, share examples of sacred imagery, and suggest fundamentals for a workable process to help the Building Committee communicate to the artist its vision for works of sacred art which will inspire, catechize, and endure through generations.

How do we interpret the origin of the universe as envisioned in the Big Bang?

How can stars, planets, cities, people have originated from a singularity? How does this cosmology relate to Catholic beliefs? This session will explore in an understandable and visual way the scientific evidence for an origin to the universe along with the laws of nature that lead to the description of creation formulated in Big Bang Cosmology.

In the space of just a few years, the internet has seen Catholics come together across continents, while in some places, it’s driven fellow parishioners further apart. What does the Church make of this phenomenon, and how are we called to engage it? A leader of Catholicism’s new media revolution explores the promise and the challenges of an “online church” and, through it, our vocation to witness to the world.

The Holy Spirit 101 – A124-127 “We believe in the Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life…” Who is the Holy Spirit and what role does He play in the Church and in our own lives? This workshop will break open what the Church teaches and believes regarding the Holy Spirit, how He was gradually revealed in salvation history, and how we are empowered by his presence and his gifts to build up the Body of Christ the Church and be the faithful witnesses of Christ. The Fathers of the Church are famous – but not well known.

They are invoked for every imaginable topic. Yet their writings are so obscure to most people that they might as well be locked in a vault. Christianity during its earliest centuries was a remarkably diverse movement. The wide ranging concerns, values, beliefs and practices of early Christians present a fascinating tapestry to contemporary students who are largely uninformed about the depth and range of this rich testimony. In this talk, we will take a look at the insights and accomplishments of the Fathers of the Church. This treasure of early Christianity needs to be rediscovered and explored by believers in the twenty-first century. Those who pick and produce our food are among the most exploited in our society, facing sub-poverty wages, frequent abuses, and even human trafficking and forced labor. Learn how farmworkers have partnered with Catholics across the country to successfully call on McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Yum Brands (parent company of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC, Long John Silvers, A &W), Whole Foods, and other companies to directly improve the wages and conditions for the farmworkers who pick their tomatoes.

These agreements include the first real wage increase for tomato pickers in 30 years, zero tolerance for human trafficking, and an enforceable code of conduct against abuses, including a voice for farmworkers in ensuring respect for their rights. This workshop will explore how Catholics-- including students, schools, and parishes-- can partner with vulnerable workers at the bottom of our food chain to bring about dignity and justice.

The Fathers of the Church are famous – but not well known. They are invoked for every imaginable topic. Yet their writings are so obscure to most people that they might as well be locked in a vault. Christianity during its earliest centuries was a remarkably diverse movement. The wide ranging concerns, values, beliefs and practices of early Christians present a fascinating tapestry to contemporary students who are largely uninformed about the depth and range of this rich testimony. In this talk, we will take a look at the insights and accomplishments of the Fathers of the Church. This treasure of early Christianity needs to be rediscovered and explored by believers in the twenty-first century. In so doing, the depth and diversity of the early Christian heritage will be reclaimed for the challenges facing the faithful today.

With his unique style of music, he has been able to reach both teens and adults. His Debut CD “In Jesus Name I Play,” recorded in Nashville and produced by Joe Hand, is a blend of acoustic, latin, rock and jazz. Augie has shared the stage with numerous artists, including Tony Melendez, Tom Booth, Matt Maher, Jesse Manibusan, Fr. Stan Fortuna, John Michael Talbot, Israel Houghton, Steve Angrisano, Who Do You Say I Am and Joe Hand, just to name a few. Augie has been involved in youth ministry for over 25 years in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Twelve years ago, Augie and his wife Dawn heard Gods call to serve those in need and started what is now one of the most recognized national catholic service organizations, called SHINE Catholic Work Camp. Summer after summer they, along with their children and a team of young adults, lead 100’s of Catholic teens from all around the country to serve those in need.

John L. Allen, Jr. is the prize-winning Senior Correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter, CNN’s Senior Vatican Analyst, a frequent commentator for other media outlets, and the author of five books on the Vatican and Catholic affairs. The London Tablet has called Allen “the most authoritative writer on Vatican affairs in the English language.” His work is admired across ideological divides; liberal commentator Fr. Andrew Greeley calls his writing “indispensable,” while conservative Fr. Richard John Neuhaus calls Allen’s reporting “possibly the best source of information on the Vatican published in the United States.”

Deacon Frank Ashley, III, Ed.D.

Deacon Ashley was ordained into the diaconate in the Dallas Dioceses in 2006.

He served one year at St. Joseph’s Parish in Commerce, Texas before returning to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in College Station in 2007. In his professional life, Deacon Frank B. Ashley has served in a variety of roles, including teacher, coach and administrator.

For 24 years, he has served in various positions at the Texas A&M University System. He served in several positions at Texas A&M University in College Station, including interim assistant provost for enrollment, director of admissions and associate dean for undergraduate studies and teacher education in the College of Education. He most recently served as interim provost and vice president for academic and student affairs at Texas A&M University-Commerce and as a school board member of the Commerce Independent School District. As vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Texas A&M University System, Deacon Ashley coordinates academic and student affairs program development, implementation and accountability for the A&M System’s eleven universities and health science center. He also leads efforts to expand enrollment of community college transfer students to System universities and leads development of comprehensive System education initiatives. Deacon Ashley received his doctorate and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama, his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana College and has studied further at St. Thomas University and he University of Dallas.

Julie Billmeier works in the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries in the Diocese of Dallas. She coordinates young adult ministry and helps with training of youth ministers. Angela Canas is currently a full-time counselor in the Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) at The Family Place in Dallas. Concurrent to her counseling work, Angela has obtained several years of managerial experience as the regional manager of a local business. The first cardinal archbishop from a diocese in the southern United States, Archbishop Daniel Cardinal DiNardo was born in Steubenville, Ohio, but attended high school and studied for the priesthood in Pittsburgh. Ordained in 1977, he holds a bachelor’s and

Speaker Biographies master’s degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America (CUA), and earned the licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He also studied patrology at the Augustinianum. He served the Congregation for Bishops in Rome from 1984 to 1991, before returning to his home diocese of Pittsburgh to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Education and as a parish priest. Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Sioux City in 1997. He was consecrated on October 7, 1997, taking over full governance of the diocese in November of the following year. Named Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of GalvestonHouston on January 16, 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Archbishop later that year after the creation of the new Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. He succeeded to full governance of the archdiocese on February 28, 2006. Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the College of Cardinals on November 24, 2007.

Sr. Clare Fitzgerald, SSND, Ph.D.

Sister Clare Fitzgerald is a native Bostonian and the third eldest of an Irish family of six children. She received her bachelor’s degree from the College of Notre Dame in Maryland, earned her master’s degree at Catholic University in Washington, DC, and was awarded a doctorate of philosophy by St. Louis University. In addition, she has received honorary doctorates from Notre Dame College, Manchester New Hampshire, and the College of Notre Dame, Baltimore, Maryland. Sister Clare has taught at all levels of education, and served for nine years as Chair of the American Studies Department at Fairfield University, and for twelve years as the founding Director of the Catholic Leadership Program, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, at Boston College. Internationally, she has lectured and presented workshops on Catholic education and the future of religious life throughout the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and England. Recent lecture engagements include St. Andrews’s College in Scotland and the University of Cambridge in England. Sister Clare is member of the Northeast Province of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and has distinguished herself by not only effective but also generous and outstanding service to communities of all faiths.

She has served as the Representative to the Provincial and General Chapters of the SSND, as well as Provincial Leader of the Northeast Province. Her national leadership positions are numerous, and include President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, and the Appointee to the Vatican Commission on the Study of Religious Life. In 1986, 1992 and 1997, Sister Clare received the National Catholic Educational Association’s highest commendation for distinguished service to Catholic education and the Church. In 1994, she received the prestigious William H. Sadlier Dinger Award for distinguished contributions to Catholic education

and leadership, and, in 1998, received the C. Albert Koop Award for her commitment for excellence and scholarship in the training of Catholic education leaders in the United States.

Amy Florian

Amy Florian is a nationally recognized speaker, teacher, and retreat director. She is a liturgy and bereavement consultant, a Fellow in Thanatology (the study of death and grief), and the founder of Corgenius, Inc. She is adjunct faculty in the graduate ministry department of Loyola University in Chicago, as well as at St. Xavier University and Dominican University. Amy has published over ninety articles and two books, and is known for her engaging and dynamic presentations.

Dr. Jerry Galipeau, D.Min.

Dr. Jerry Galipeau is Associate Publisher at World Librar y Publications, the music and liturgy division of J.S. Paluch Company, in Franklin Park, Illinois. Before coming to World Library, he served for fifteen years as Director of Liturgy and Music at parishes in Florida and Illinois.

Jerry presents keynotes and workshops throughout the United States and Canada on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, liturgical spirituality, ritual music, evangelization, and adult spiritual formation. Past chair of the Board of Directors of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, Jerry has been a frequent team member for Forum’s institutes. A popular parish mission presenter and retreat leader, he earned a doctorate of ministry with a concentration in liturgical studies from Catholic Theological Union at Chicago in 1999, where he is presently an adjunct faculty member. His popular blog, “Gotta Sing, Gotta Pray” focuses on issues on music, liturgy, Christian initiation, and the upcoming new translation of the Roman Missal. Brigitte Gynther is the Director of Interfaith Action of Southwest Florida, a network of people of faith who work in partnership with farmworkers to promote dignity and justice in the fields.

Brigitte was awarded the 2009 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award at the annual fall meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award, established by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, honors a Catholic between the ages of 18 and 30 who demonstrates leadership in fighting poverty and injustice in the United States. Brigitte works in partnership with the farmworkers of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to engage Catholics across the country in calling on major food retailers to directly address the sub-poverty wages and abuses facing farmworkers in their supply chains. She is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame.

Lisa Hendey is the founder and editor of CatholicMom.com and the author of the best-selling book, The Handbook for Catholic Moms: Nurturing Your Heart, Mind, Body and Soul. A popular speaker, Lisa has written for numerous Catholic publications and websites. She is the host of the “Catholic Mom” television program and appears regularly on a variety of Catholic radio programs. Lisa and her husband Greg reside in the Diocese of Fresno with their two teenage sons Eric and Adam.

Angeline Hubert

Angeline Hubert earned her master’s in theology from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Professor Hubert taught history and theology in Catholic secondary schools in the Diocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis for 18 years before joining the faculty of the Denver Catholic Biblical School where she taught for 20 years and served as the associate director for six years. Most recently, she taught at the University of Dallas’ School of Ministry Catholic Biblical School. In addition to her teaching, she has given numerous classes, lectures, workshops, days of reflection, and retreats on a variety of biblical topics. She is one of the co-authors of The Denver Catholic Biblical School Program, which is published by Paulist Press.

Dr. Steven Janco, D.Min.

Steve Janco is the director of the Rensselaer Program of Church Music and Liturgy at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN. The Rensselaer Program convenes for just over four weeks every summer, offering coursework for a master’s in church music and pastoral liturgy, as well as three-day Liturgy Intensives and its well-known Gregorian Chant Institute. Steve has been an institute team member for the North American Forum on the Catechumenate since 1998. Steve is a well-known composer of liturgical music. Mass of the Angels and Saints, published

by GIA in 1996, and Mass of Redemption, published by WLP in 2000, are sung widely in the United States and beyond.

Dr. Marti Jewell, D.Min.

Dr. Marti R. Jewell is an Assistant Professor of Theology in the School of Ministry at the University of Dallas.

Previously, she was the Director of the Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership Project, a national research project studying excellence in parish leadership.

Co-author of The Changing Face of Church and The Next Generation of Pastoral Leaders which detail the findings of the Project, she also served as an agency director in the Archdiocese of Louisville from 1990 to 2003. Marti holds a bachelor’s in mathematics from the University of Dayton, a master’s in theological studies from St. Francis Seminary School of Pastoral Ministry, Milwaukee, and a doctorate of ministry from the Catholic University of America.

Sr. Dorothy Jonaitis, O.P., D.Min.

Sr. Dorothy Jonaitis earned a doctor of ministry degree in preaching from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri. She also has earned a master’s in religious education from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI, and a master’s in new testament from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Illinois. She is the author of Unmasking Apocalyptic Texts: A Guide to Preaching and Teaching, published by Paulist Press in 2005.

It is available at the Viva Bookstore conference booth. On July 8, 2010, a CD series of lectures published by Now You Know Media was released to the public. It is a series of 24 25-minute lectures on apocalyptic literature in the Bible. It will be available at the Now You Know Media conference booth.

Before joining the School of Ministry, Sr. Jonaitis taught for the Catholic Biblical School of the Archdiocese of Denver and taught in the Preaching Institute at Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, for two summers.

David Kauffman

David Kauffman is a songwriter, recording artist and founder of Good For The Soul Music. He has given over 1000 concerts, youth rallies and parish retreats. He has performed for Pope John Paul II and over a million and a half people at World Youth Day in Paris and Denver. David’s passion is to offer music and spiritual reflections that will help people experience God’s embrace in everyday life. He transformed the “Morning Offering” prayer into a beautiful meditative song called, “I Will Make This Day My Prayer.” The Magnificat from Luke 1:46-55 is sung as a congregational song entitled, “Behold,” the title song of his

album, Behold, a collection of hymns and psalm settings for Sunday worship. And there’s Follow Me singing of discipleship.

Both are wonderful for playing in your car’s CD player! His Be Still and Surrender albums are filled with quiet reflection music, and are used by people who care for the sick, the homebound, and hospice patients, as well as RCIA sessions and retreat settings. His COJO (Companion on the Journey) Series sings and speaks to different milestones in life, and take the listener on a mini-retreat in the listening. His songs touch the heart and soul of us all. David’s latest CD is titled 12-Healing Songs for Recovery. Each of the songs on this CD connects to each of the 12 steps. These songs do not simply retell the step, they sing the subtleties before, during and after each step is realized in your life. Barbara Khirallah

Barbara Khirallah is a faculty member in the Department of Education at the University of Dallas. She is also the founder and director of the Dallas Area Network of Teaching and Education (DANTE), an academic “community of practice serving Catholic educators in the Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Tyler Dioceses.” DANTE has offered credit courses, workshops, and inservice education in support of teachers and catechists for over 15 years. Barbara served Holy Family parish in Irving, TX as co-director of the RCIA program from 1985 – 2002 and as director of Vacation Bible School from 1984 -- 1994. She and her husband Ray have five children, all educated in Catholic schools.

Dennis Kurtz

Dennis presently serves as a National Sales Consultant at Saint Mary’s Press, in Winona, Minnesota. He holds a certificate of advanced studies in ministry from the Center for Ministry Development and has done graduate work in theology with emphasis on sacred scripture at Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota. He directed the Office of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of La Crosse, WI, for twenty years. Dennis has served as a high school instructor of religion and campus minister. He also served on the Board of Directors for the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. He has published several books including, Effective Practices for Dynamic Youth Ministry, Youth Engaging Scripture: Diving into the Sunday Gospels, and Day by Day with People of the Bible: Reflections for Teens.

Speaker Biographies Dr. Dan Luby, S.T.L., S.T.D.

Dr. Daniel Luby earned a doctorate in spiritual theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, where he also earned the licentiate in sacred theology. He holds a bachelor’s from the University of Notre Dame, and a master’s in theology from the University of Dallas. Dr. Luby was the long-time Director of the Office of Adult Formation, and most recently the Director of the Division of Christian Formation for the Diocese of Fort Worth. Luby served as Tschoepe Chair of Homiletics at the School of Ministry from 2007 - 2010. He is currently Assistant Professor and Director of Enrollment and Student Affairs at the School of Ministry.

Dr. Jonathan Lunine, Ph.D.

Jonathan I. Lunine is Professor of Physics at the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, on leave from the University of Arizona.

He is also Distinguished Visiting Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His research interests include the evolution of giant planets and brown dwarf stars, the formation of planets, the evolution of Titan’s atmosphere and surface processes, and organic chemistry leading to the origin of life. Lunine is an interdisciplinary scientist on the Cassini mission to Saturn and on the James Webb (NextGeneration) Space Telescope. He is a co-investigator on the Juno mission under development for a launch to Jupiter next year. Dr. Lunine is the author of the book “Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World” (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and “Astrobiology: A Multidisciplinary Approach” (Addison-Wesley, 2005). He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and this year was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Lunine earned a bachelor’s in physics and astronomy from the University of Rochester in 1980, followed by master’s (1983) and doctorate (1985) in planetary science from the California Institute of Technology.

Elizabeth Madeo

Elizabeth graduated from Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, KS, with a bachelor’s in pastoral ministry in 2002 and has been the Director of Youth Ministries at her parish in Kearney, MO, for the last 8 years. She also added children’s ministry to her plate a few years ago! She received a certificate in youth ministry from the Center for Ministry Development, completed her master’s in theology from the University of Notre Dame, and is now an adjunct professor at the University of Saint Mary in

Dr. Robert McCarty, D.Min.

Bob McCarty is the Executive Director for the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, which provides networking, resources, and leadership for the development of youth ministry within the Catholic Church. He has been in professional youth ministry since 1973, serving in diocesan, parish, school, and community programs.

Bob offers workshops and training programs in ministry skills and issues internationally. His recent books are Thriving in Youth Ministry and The Vision of Catholic Youth Ministry: Fundamentals, Theory and Practice through Saint Mary’s Press, Be A Champion for Youth: Standing With, By and For Young People, co-authored with his wife, Maggie, and his newest book, Raising Happy, Healthy and Holy Teenagers:A Primer for Parents through NFCYM. Bob is also a volunteer in his parish youth ministry and catechetical program at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Fulton, MD. Bob has a bachelor’s in sociology/theology from St. Joseph’s University, a master’s in religious education from LaSalle University, and a doctorate in ministry from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana. His hobbies include rock climbing, cycling, and now, grandparenting!

Dr. Rick McCord, Ed.D.

Mr. McCord is Executive Director of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth – a position he has held for twelve years. He has a doctorate in education from the University of Mar yland. Other degrees include a master’s in divinity. from Mary Immaculate Seminary and a master’s of arts from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has been serving the Catholic Church professionally for 38 years in parish educational work, diocesan administration, and in national leadership. His published work has appeared in many church journals, magazines and syndicated features.

He has contributed to five books and three national research projects on marriage. Currently he directs the Bishops’ National Pastoral Initiative for Marriage – a multi-year effort to provide resources and other leadership tools for strengthening marriage in church and society. His other area of expertise is lay ecclesial ministry. He directed a decade-long national effort that resulted in the 2005 publication of the U.S. Bishops’ influential document, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord: A Resource for the Development of Lay Ecclesial Ministry. Linda McCray

Linda K. McCray is a creator of abstract spiritual original paintings, art-andenvironment designer, art consultant for sacred space, retreat facilitator, teacher and advocate for contemporary art in worship. Her passion in painting is translating the gospel and sacred realities into contemporary abstract art that ignites the spiritual imagination of believers today. As Fr. Ed Hislop said, “Linda’s art fires the imagination and creates the environment for a deeper encounter with the real presence of Christ.” As an advocate for contemporary art in worship, she publishes The Liturgical Artists Directory and Liturgical Art Today. Several of her articles have been published by Georgetown Center for Liturgy on their online resource EnVisionChurch.org and the magazine Ministry and Liturgy. She is dedicated to her goal of helping bridge the gap between mainstream contemporary art and sacred art. As H. Rafael Chacón, Ph.D., Professor of Art History and Criticism at The University of Montana wrote, “Linda McCray steps into the breach that exists between contemporary art and the faith community with her paintings.

McCray uses light, color, and texture in her powerful, abstract compositions to create emotionally charged images which afford the faithful instruction, the seeker time for reflection, and the pilgrim a place of refuge.” Adjunct Professor McCray teaches Art Appreciation: Sacred and Secular Perspectives online for the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota and a number of art courses for The University of Montana– Helena. She facilitates art-and-faith retreats and liturgical art workshops. Her genuine understanding of art history, contemporary art and all media in combination with her vast connections with liturgical artists are the foundation of her art consulting for sacred space. She puts her knowledge into practice while creating art-and-environment designs for faith communities and religious events. While serving as artist-inresidence at Blessed Trinity Catholic Community in Missoula, Montana, she continues her study of art and liturgy. She is a member of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space and Christians in the Visual Arts. Linda graduated from the University of Montana with a master’s of fine arts in painting and drawing, and cum laude from Washington State University with a bachelor’s in fine arts.

Jim McGill

James McGill earned a bachelor’s in philosophy from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a master’s in theology from St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, California.

Professor McGill had been an instructor of Theology and Sacred Scripture for the Greco Institute in Shreveport, Louisiana, for 18 years. He currently is an instructor in the Catholic Biblical School of the School of Ministry at the University of Dallas.

Frank Mercadante

Frank received his bachelor’s in Christian education from Wheaton College, a master’s in pastoral studies from Loyola University, Chicago. For 10 years, he served as Director of Youth Ministry at St. John Neumann in St. Charles, Illinois, which was recognized as one of the most successful Catholic youth ministries nationwide, being featured in the book Parishes That Excel, by Fr. Patrick Brennan. Since 1991, Frank has served as Executive Director of Cultivation Ministries. He has designed and written extensive youth ministry training planning manuals used to help train and equip student leaders and adult youth workers internationally. Additionally, Frank has authored the books Growing Teen Disciples, Positively Dangerous, and Make It Real from St. Mary’s Press and Disciples in Mission Small Group Leaders Guide for Teens from PNCEA. Frank received the National Catholic Youth Ministry Award in Training from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry in 2008.

Frank is married to Diane, and they have six children (Sarah, Michael, Rebekah, Angela, Deborah, and Daniel.

Debra Mitchell-Ibe

Debra Mitchell-Ibe, Director of Community Outreach for The Family Place, has provided counseling and supportive services to victims of family violence for over twenty years. Debra joined The Family Place in 1986 and has worked for the agency as a Women’s Counselor, Hotline Manager, Shelter Director and Director of Community Outreach. She has presented on family violence at numerous state and local conferences, training professionals and community members. Debra holds a master’s in social work from the University of Texas in Arlington.

Speaker Biographies Rev. Jonathan Morris

As a news analyst for the Fox News and Fox Business Channels, Father Jonathan Morris offers coverage of the ethical, social, and religious news stories of the day. As a Roman Catholic priest with pastoral experience developed from serving around the world, he brings not only a journalist’s eye to issues, but also a pastor’s heart in relating how that issue will affect the audience. After studying business administration at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, Father Jonathan joined the seminary and attained separate degrees in classical humanities, philosophy, and theology. After his ordination in 2002, he served a number of roles, including theological advisor in the making of the feature film The Passion of the Christ.

Father Jonathan graduated with high honors with a licentiate degree in moral theology (ethics) from Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome, Italy. While serving as vicerector of Rome’s largest seminary, Father Jonathan was interviewed by numerous networks, including CNN, Sky News, and the BBC, during the illness and death of Pope John Paul II, in March and April of 2005. In May 2005, he signed on with Fox News Channel as a regular news analyst and contributor. Dr. Richard Olenick, Ph.D.

Dr. Olenick received his doctorate in physics from Purdue University and currently is Professor of Physics at the University of Dallas where he teaches a popular course on astronomy. He began the development of physics materials for classroom use in l982, when he was the Associate Director of the Annenberg/CPB Project, The Mechanical Universe and Beyond the Mechanical Universe and principal author of the accompanying texts. He was Project Director for four National Science Foundation grants to adapt the college version for use in high school classrooms-a project that has been translated into eleven languages.

He also was PI for NSF and NDN dissemination grants for The Mechanical Universe High School Adaptation and C3P Project. In 1995 the Carnegie Foundation named him Texas Professor of the Year for the Advancement of Teaching, in 1997 the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation named him a Piper Professor, and in 2010 he was name a Haggerty Teaching Fellow at UD. He has maintained active involvement of undergraduates in research through computational modeling and cataclysmic variable star studies.

Dr. Scott Opperman, Ph.D.

Scott R. Opperman grew-up in Monroe, MI, which borders Lake Erie between Detroit and Toledo. Due to his up-bringing, influences, and experiences, he developed a keen interest in philosophy and theology as a young adult which has not ceased. As a result, Scott went on to earn a bachelor’s in philosophy and religious studies at John Carroll University, a master’s in theology at the University of Notre Dame, a master’s in religious education at Loyola University of Chicago, and a doctorate in systematic theology at Durham University in the U.K. However, his passion for philosophy and theology has been rooted in faith and praxis.

For about seven years, Scott discerned religious life as a novice and then as a scholastic in the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), which offered him a rich ministerial formation that included a vast range of experiences in the U.S. and abroad.

Most of the ministries to which he was missioned focused on areas of healthcare, secondary education, social justice, spirituality, and young adults. After leaving the Jesuits, he has continued to be active in similar areas of ministry. While completing his doctorate at Durham University in Durham, England, Scott served in many administrative and pastoral roles at St. Chad’s College and taught in the University’s Department of Theology and Religion. Eventually he taught full-time and was on the formation team at Ushaw College, an affiliated college of Durham University, which is the Catholic school of theology and ministry in the North of England for

There he taught courses in fundamental theology, missiology, moral theology, pastoral theology, philosophy, spirituality, and systematic theology. This past semester, Scott taught a weekend course in systematic theology for the School of Ministry, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Given this experience and more, he looks forward to working full-time as a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Ministry starting this fall.

A Philadelphia native, Palmo attended the University of Pennsylvania, from which he earned a bachelor’s in political science. In May 2010, his work to bridge the church and technology was honored by Aquinas Institute of Theology in St Louis with a doctorate of humane letters, honoris causa.

Dr. Jo Ann Paradise, D.Min.

Dr. Jo Ann Paradise is the National Consultant for Our Sunday Visitor Curriculum Division, formerly Harcourt Religion. Jo Ann has ser ved as catechetical administrator in several parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh for over 32 years and was most recently the Director of Parish Ministerial Life and Spiritual Formation at Saint Sebastian Parish. Jo Ann has been a teacher in the Catholic school system at both the grade school and high school levels as well as an adjunct faculty member of several universities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She lectures on lifelong learning, sexuality, classroom management skills, spirituality and moral issues to educators and catechists. She is a popular retreat director and provides spiritual direction. Jo Ann lives in Pittsburgh with her husband Don and extended family.

Lucas Pollice

Lucas Pollice is the Director of Catechesis for the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas.

He holds a bachelor’s in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville and a master’s of theological studies from the Institute of Pastoral Theology

at Ave Maria University. Lucas has been involved in full time parish and diocesan catechetical ministry since 1999. He has taught RCIA for over 12 years and is and is the author of Open Wide the Doors to Christ: Discovering Catholicism, a complete curriculum for RCIA published by Emmaus Road Publications. Lucas is also a regular columnist in the North Texas Catholic diocesan newspaper. Lucas and his wife, Mary, have five children and live in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Julie Richey

Julie Richey is a nationally recognized mosaic artist. Julie won a Rotar y International Fellowship to Italy after she graduated from the University of Dallas with an art degree. This experience encouraged her fascination with the beauty and versatility of mosaic art. She has participated in mosaic workshops in the U.S. and Italy and has completed many mosaic commissions for churches, residential and commercial properties in Texas, Virginia, Mexico and Spain. Her favorite commissions include a 20-foot diameter mosaic medallion for the International Terminal at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and a baptistery mosaic for St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Falls Church, Virginia, depicting the four evangelists. Julie has taught mosaic classes and been a panelist, featured speaker and board member for the Society of American Mosaic Artists. In September, 2009, she was awarded the international fine art mosaic Grand Prize by Orsoni Smalti Veneziani in Italy for her sculptural work, “Night Shirt.”

John Roberto

John Roberto is the president and founder of LifelongFaith Associates, an organization dedicated to nurturing faith growth for all ages and generations in the parish and at home. John is editor of the journal Lifelong Faith, and works as a consultant to churches and national organizations, teaches courses and conducts workshops in faith formation, manages a web site: LifelongFaith.com, and develops resources in lifelong faith formation. His latest publications include Living Well: Christian Practices for Everyday Life (published by LifelongFaith Associates, 2009), Becoming a Church of Lifelong Learners (Twenty-Third Publications, 2006), and four volumes of intergenerational learning programs in the People of Faith series (Harcourt Religion Publishers, 2005-2007). John holds a master’s in religious education from Fordham University. Jo Rotunno

Valerie and Randy Schultz were college sweethearts at the University of Dallas.

They have been married for 29 years, and have four daughters, ages 27, 26, 21, and 18. Valerie is a freelance writer, and a weekly columnist for the THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN. Her first book, a collection of essays on marriage and intimacy called “Closer”, was published in 2008 by Ave Maria Press.

Randy was a classroom teacher for many years. He earned his doctorate in 2002, and is now an assistant professor of education at Cal State Bakersfield. The Schultzes have long been active in parish ministry, and currently conduct weekend Catholic services at the state prison in Tehachapi, CA.

Jo currently serves as Director of Catechist and Professional Development for RCL Benziger. She has worked for the last twenty-six years in various positions in Catholic curriculum publishing and speaks nationally on faith formation topics.

She worked as a religious educator in the Los Angeles Archdiocese for 25 years. She holds a master’s in religious studies from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.

Rev. Anthony Ruff, OSB

Fr. Anthony is a monk of St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, where he teaches theology, liturgical music, and Gregorian chant at St. John’s University and School of Theology/Seminary. He studied at St. John’s, Yale, and the University of Graz, Austria. He is founding director of the National Catholic Youth Choir, a summer camp and touring experience for high-schoolers at St. John’s. He served on the music subcommittee of the national Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy which drafted the 2007 document “Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship.” He is on the advisory board of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, and serves as chair of this organization’s chant subcommittee. He wrote the book Sacred Music and Liturgical Reform: Treasures and Transformations, a 702-page study of the musical reforms of Second Vatican Council, and composed the settings in Responsorial Psalms for Daily Mass: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter. Forthcoming from GIA is the chant collection he edited, Canticum novum: Gregorian Chant for Today’s Choirs. He is a frequent presenter across the U.S. on topics of liturgy and music, and he frequently publishes in liturgical and musical journals. He plays organ and directs Gregorian chant at the abbey, and does priestly ministry at the county jail and for the neighboring community of Benedictine sisters.

Joyce Springer

Joyce is first and foremost a catechist and teacher. Joyce taught religion in Catholic schools for 14 years, as well as working part-time as a DRE. Curtis Stephan

Curtis Stephan has been “through the storm” and back. A lifelong musician who began playing piano at age 5, this young man’s journey has been one of searching and finding. During his intense college years, he began to write music as a release. “Every day was a battle to see purpose in my life, to really believe that there was hope – that God had something in store for me that was meaningful and exciting,” the singer-songwriter related. “So I ended up sitting at the piano and pouring my heart out through music.

It has always been the best way to understand and express my emotions.” After receiving a bachelor’s degree in music and master’s degree in jazz studies from the University of Northern

While most people with his credentials would be headed for New York City to live the jazz musician’s dream, Curtis still found himself wanting more. He eventually answered the call to be a Youth Music Minister at St. Ann’s Church in Coppell, Texas, a parish with a stunning 18,000 members. “I felt like that was what I was supposed to be doing. I figured I would take a chance and try this for awhile and I’d go from there.” At St. Ann’s, Curtis found his mission: to spread the Good News of the gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that is starving for it. The growth in popularity of Christian music had a profound effect on Curtis’ ministry and songwriting. “Everyone goes through a time when they feel like they’re doing all the right things but are getting beat up by the world. In a culture that glorifies the negative, I really want to promote a message of hope for people with my music,” he said. “Christian music just keeps you going. It helps you focus on the right things. It helps you focus on God.” Now, with the release of his debut CD Through the Storm, Curtis’ ministry expands to a wider audience. The CD is an accumulation of his personal experiences, exposing everyday emotions and problems with a positive light. It’s the quintessential rock album — the gospel meets rock’n’roll.

There’s nothing more upbeat than the positive light of God, and Curtis Stephan captures that light. “There are two kinds of people in the world,” said the artist. “The people that turn curses into blessings and the people who turn blessings into curses. I want to turn everything into a blessing and that is really what this record is about.”

Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi is pastor of the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, Maryland, and a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington. Prior to his seminary studies at the Gregorian University in Rome, he practiced law. He remains a member of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar, and is chaplain of the John Carroll Society, a group of professionals and businesspersons in service of the Archbishop of Washington. He has written a number of articles for America and Priest magazines and for Our Sunday Visitor newspaper. He is also a contributor to Behold Your Mother: Priests Speak about Mary (Ave Maria Press).

La presente ponencia tiene por objeto analizar: ¿Cómo Dios trabaja con nosotros para hacernos Santos? Dios trabaja en dos sentidos para apoyar nuestro camino a la Santidad.

En primer lugar, al limpiar nuestra almas de pecado y abandonarnos en la manos de Dios, Él nos da la gracia para seguir nuestro camino a la Santificación. En segundo lugar, al estar en gracia de Dios y tenerlo como centro de nuestra vida, llevamos a Cristo a todas las actividades humanas y de esta manera le anunciamos al mundo que Dios los ama y quiere salvarlos a todos. La ponencia tendrá un ejercicio práctico con los participantes para reflexionar cómo podemos incorporar a Dios en nuestras vidas ordinarias de ama de casa, obrero, empleado, empresario, voluntario, artista, etc.

Para tomar conciencia de que estas actividades, tareas u obligaciones que parecen sin importancia, al hacerlas con y por Cristo tienen un valor de eternidad.

En tiempos de crisis, las primeras personas en ser contactadas por víctimas de violencia domestica son los líderes religiosos.

En este taller interactivo, obtendrá información sobre cómo intervenir de manera segura y cómo prevenir la violencia familiar. Los participantes aprenderán la dinámica de la violencia familiar, cómo identificar las señales de advertencia del abuso, las formas que la Escritura se puede ser utilizada por el abusador o agresor en contra de una víctima y la manera de intervenir de forma segura con las víctimas y sus familias. A cada asistente al taller se le dará una guía sobre violencia familiar como un recurso para su Parroquia.

¿Qué es una nulidad matrimonial eclesiástica? ¿Quién puede pedir la nulidad matrimonial? ¿Por qué causas se declara la nulidad de un matrimonio? – A135-136 Si se trata de un matrimonio canónico, sólo la Iglesia tiene poder para dictar una resolución sobre disolución o nulidad de ese matrimonio, puesto que el Estado no tiene competencia para disolver este tipo de matrimonios canónicos. El divorcio únicamente regula circunstancias de tipo civil en relación con el matrimonio. Los cónyuges no pueden acceder a nuevo matrimonio canónico con el divorcio, siendo únicamente posible contraer matrimonio civil, que no es reconocido por la Iglesia como verdadero matrimonio para los bautizados. En estos casos sólo cabe, para contraer con otra persona ante la Iglesia, pedir la declaración de nulidad del primer matrimonio canónico, si hay causa. Estas preguntas y muchos otros puntos más, acerca de este apasionante tema, se abordaran en esta presentación.

Brigitte Gynther Transformando la industria agricola a respetar la dignidad de los trabajadores del campo – A133-134 Los trabajadores que cosechan nuestra comida son entre los mas pobres y explotados de nuestra sociedad. Enfrentan sueldos bajos, abusos frequentes, y en los casos mas extremos estan forzados a trabajar en contra su voluntad. Aprenda como los trabajadores de campo y gente catolica han trabajado juntos para hacer que McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Taco Bell, y otras companias mejoran los sueldos y condiciones de los trabajadores que cosechan sus tomates.

Estos acuerdos estan cambiando la cara de la industria agricola en la Florida y incluyen el primer aumento para los trabajadores en 30 anos, cero tolerancia para trabajo forzado, y una voz para los trabajadores para participar en defender sus derechos. Este taller explorara como la iglesia y escuelas pueden collaborar con los trabajadores de campo para acabar con la pobreza y hacer una sistema de comida que respeta la dignidad humana de todos.

Dios no tolera el maltrato: como trabajar con hombres para ayudar a ACABAR con la violencia familiar – A135136 En esta sesión se presentará información sobre los hombres que usan la violencia contra sus seres queridos y el importantísimo papel que una comunidad de fe debe desempeñar para ayudar a acabar con la violencia familiar.

Se revisarán las ideas más comunes acerca del abuso, se discutirá el porqué los hombres eligen ser violentos y abusivos, se hablará sobre cómo identificar cuando está ocurriendo abuso en el hogar, cómo la escritura puede ser manipuladas por un agresor para excusar su violencia, y cómo la iglesia puede responsabilizar a los abusadores. En esta presentación se identificarán los pasos que un abusador puede utilizar para lograr una transformación personal, de ser abusivo a convertirse en un ser no-violento y cómo las iglesias pueden intervenir de manera segura y ayudar a las familias que son víctimas del abuso.

Transformando la industria agricola a respetar la dignidad de los trabajadores del campo – A115-117 Los trabajadores que cosechan nuestra comida son entre los mas pobres y explotados de nuestra sociedad. Enfrentan sueldos bajos, abusos frequentes, y en los casos mas extremos estan forzados a trabajar en contra su voluntad. Aprenda como los trabajadores de campo y gente catolica han trabajado juntos para hacer que McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Taco Bell, y otras companias mejoran los sueldos y condiciones de los trabajadores que cosechan sus tomates.

Estos acuerdos estan cambiando la cara de la industria agricola en la Florida y incluyen el primer aumento para los trabajadores en 30 anos, cero tolerancia para trabajo forzado, y una voz para los trabajadores para participar en defender sus derechos. Este taller explorara como la iglesia y escuelas pueden collaborar con los trabajadores de campo para acabar con la pobreza y hacer una sistema de comida que respeta la dignidad humana de todos.

Como implementar la Lectio Divina en su parroquia – A202 La presentación pretende demostrar de manera sencilla y práctica como la Iglesia Católica nos presenta y nos invita a descubrir la insondable riqueza que encontramos en las Sagradas Escrituras. Para lograr este cometido, la presentación se divide en tres partes: 1) la palabra en la vida de la Iglesia, la palabra de Dios en la Biblia, y la espiritualidad de seguimiento y de identificación con el Señor Jesús; 2) ¿Qué es la Lectio Divina y 3) el proceso comunitario de la Lectio Divina en la parroquia. Las tres partes esperan darle al participante puntos importantes sobre la lectura orante para que de esta manera empiece a animar la pastoral bíblica en su comunidad.

Nos cuesta trabajo reconciliar la idea de un Dios bueno con la realidad del sufrimiento humano, por lo cual cuestionamos: ¿por qué Dios permite el dolor? Esta conferencia busca ayudarnos a reconciliar la existencia de un Dios bueno con la realidad del dolor humano, pero sobre todo busca ayudarnos a “sufrir mejor”.

El Magisterio actual de la Iglesia nos pide con premura que retomemos el método de Lectio Divina, especialmente quienes nos dedicamos a la pastoral.

Carla E. Aguilar tiene un Bachillerato en Artes en Inglés/Comunicaciones de la Universidad de St. Mary, en donde está actualmente estudiando una maestría en Relaciones Internacionales con énfasis en el desarrollo humano sostenible.

Antes de comenzar a trabajar para CRS Suroeste, (por sus siglas en Ingles que significa “Agencia de ayuda Humanitaria Internacional”) en enero de 2010, Ms. Aguilar trabajó en el campo de la planificación de eventos especiales/de recaudación de fondos. Ms. Aguilar también ha servido como Directora de Comunicaciones y Desarrollo en Merced Housing Texas, y ha trabajado como reportera para varios medios de publicación en español. Como Coordinadora del Programa de Incidencia para CRS Suroeste, ella es responsable del acercamiento a las diócesis, organizaciones religiosas y cívicas, coaliciones, e instituciones en la región para educar e informar a católicos y a otros en asuntos globales y proveer oportunidades para involucrarse en asuntos legislativos y políticos.

David Almager

David Almager, director del Programa de Intervención y Prevención (BIPP) con la agencia The Family Place en Dallas, tiene más de diez años de experiencia trabajando con abusadores de violencia doméstica. El tambien ha servido como el director de servicios familiares en un programa de violencia doméstica en Amarillo, como trabajador social en una prisión del estado, y como un consejero de BIPP en Plano. El recibió su certificación de Maestria de West Texas A&M University.

Dra. Maria Boccalandro

Profesora universitaria, Planificadora Urbana con Maestría en Transporte Urbano y Ph.D. en Ciencia Política. Más de 16 años formación teológica y moral católica. Empresaria con experiencia como consultora y entrenadora en gerencia, planificación estratégica y operacional en empresas publicas, privadas y organizaciones sin fines de lucro en USA y Latinoamérica. Gran capacidad de facilitación y comunicación interpersonal bilingüe. Ha sido oradora de orden y expositora en múltiples seminarios y congresos, incluyendo la Universidad de Dallas (UD). Ha participado en varias juntas directivas de empresas privadas e instituciones benéficas, tales como: Asociación Venezolana de Mujeres, Voces Vitales: Caracas, Venezuela. Rosabel Cantu

Rosabel Cantu, es la Asistente de la Directora del Programa de “The Family Place” (El lugar de la Familia). Rosabel ha trabajado con víctimas de violencia familiar por más de veinte años, con énfasis en la comunidad latina. Se desempeña en esta agencia como consejera de niños y adultos y que han sido víctimas de violencia familiar, supervisa un equipo bilingüe y biocultural al mismo tiempo que educa a la comunidad latina. Bajo su liderazgo en el 2008, el Programa “Latina Outreach” fue premiado por “Community Council of Greater Dallas Award” por la excelencia de su Programa Humanitario. Antes de trabajar para “The Family Place” en Dallas, Rosabel trabajo como consejera de mujeres y niños en la Agencia de ayuda contra la violencia familiar en Austin, Texas.

Dra. Pilar Calva

La Dra. Pilar Calva es médico cirujano con especialidad en Genética Humana y una subespecialidad en Citogenética en Paris, Francia, donde laboró en el servicio del Profesor Jerôme Lejeune.

Maestría en Bioética. Actualmente es profesora de la Facultad de Bioética y de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad Anáhuac, del Instituto en Ciencias del Matrimonio y la Familia- Juan Pablo II, y de la Universidad de Dallas. Es coordinadora y consultora de la sección de bioética del portal http://es.catholic.net/ sexualidadybioetica. Instructora certificada del Método de la Ovulación Billings, ha impartido cursos desde 1984 en diversos países. Ha impartido conferencias y ponencias en congresos a nivel internacional. Tiene publicaciones en revistas nacionales y extranjeras, y en tres libros. Miembro de la Academia Pontificia para la Vida, del Consejo de Bioética del Episcopado Mexicano y del CELAM, de la Asociación Panamericana de Bioética, Academia Mexicana de Bioética y del Observatorio Regional para la Mujer de América Latina.

Es casada y tiene cuatro hijos.

Rev. Abelardo Cobos Gómez

Nació en la Ciudad de Puebla de lo Ángeles, México. En 1985 ingreso a la Orden hospital de San Juan de Dios, prestando sus servicios en hospitales psiquiátricos de la misma Orden en las ciudades de Guadalajara, Puebla, y Ciudad de México.

Realizo sus estudios de filosofía en el Instituto de Formación Sacerdotal de la Arquidiócesis de México en donde obtuvo el bachillerato Pontificio en Filosofía. Obtuvo su Maestría en Divinidad en la Universidad de Santo Tomas en Houston. En

Conferenciantes Mayo del 2003, mismo año en el que fue ordenado sacerdote diocesano al servicio de la Arquidiócesis de GalvestonHouston, fue vicario parroquial en la parroquia de Príncipe de Paz y actualmente es el Párroco de la Iglesia Resurrección.

Su trabajo pastoral no se limita solo a la renovación de su parroquia y al colegio parroquial que tiene sino también se enfoca en la catequesis y la evangelización en los medios de comunicación. El Padre Cobos es colaborador de la estación de radio “Radio María Hispana” en esta arquidiócesis, e instructor en varios programas de formación para el ministerio cristiano, impartiendo la materia de Moral de la Iglesia y doctrina.

Santiago Fernandez

Santiago Fernández se ha desempeñado como músico pastoralista por los últimos 20 años en varias parroquias y ministerios.

El es actualmente director del ministerio musical en la parroquia de San Miguel en Pontiac, Michigan, en donde dirige los coros en español y en inglés. Santiago trabaja también como consultor de ministerios hispanos para la Arquidiócesis de Detroit y es conferencista y presentador de talleres en eventos y conferencias a nivel nacional en el área de música litúrgica hispana. Santiago obtuvo su licenciatura en música en Wayne State University en Detroit y su certificación en ministerio litúrgico y ministerio pastoral en la Arquidiócesis de Detroit de acuerdo a la Comisión de Certificación y Acreditación de la USCCB (Conferencia Episcopal Norteamericana). Santiago ha sido miembro del Consejo Asesor Nacional para la USCCB, director musical de la organización nacional NCCHM (National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry), instructor del Instituto Fe y Vida en el área de música en la liturgia y Coordinador de Culto y Liturgia para el Primer Encuentro Nacional de la Pastoral Juvenil Hispana 2006. El también ha participado en varios eventos de la Arquidiócesis de Detroit como director invitado, cantor y consultor. Es notable destacar que en octubre de 2006, Santiago fue galardonado por la UCMVA (United Catholic Music and Video Association) con 3 “Unity Awards” como mejor artista, disco y canción internacional.

Ricardo Grzona

Nació en Mendoza, Argentina. Desde joven, su vocación se destinó en las áreas de catequesis y pastoral en la Iglesia.

Realizó varios cursos como catequista y se desempeñó en parroquias, colegios y universidades. Siguió haciendo una especialización en el Instituto Teológico Pastoral del CELAM (en aquel tiempo en Medellín, Colombia) y luego continuó su Licenciatura y culminó el ciclo de doctorado en Catequética en la Universidad Pontificia Salesiana de Roma. Fue secretario de los Departamentos de Catequesis

y de Educación del CELAM para toda América Latina. Es Fundador y Presidente de la Fundación Ramón Pané, al servicio de catequistas y agentes de Pastoral en toda América, con sede en Miami. También es consultor de las Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas para los programas con la Iglesia Católica en todo el Continente. Ricardo Grzona ha dictado seminarios cursos y conferencias en la mayoría de los países de América Latina, el Caribe, Estados Unidos y varios de Europa.

Brigitte Gynther

Brigitte Gynther es Directora de la Acción Interreligiosa del Suroeste de la Florida, una red de gente de fe que trabajan en conjunto con los trabajadores del campo para promover la dignidad y la justicia en el trabajo. Brigitte fue premiada en la junta anual de la Conferencia de Obispos de los Estados Unidos en el 2009 con el premio “Cardenal Bernardin, Nuevo Liderazgo”, este premio, establecido por la Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano, honra a católicos entre las edades de 18 a 30 años, que han demostrado liderazgo contra e injusticia y la pobreza en los Estados Unidos de Norte América. Brigitte está asociada con los trabajadores del campo y de la “Coalición de trabajadores de Immokalee” (Florida), para hacer que los católicos de todo el país participen en pedir a los establecimientos de comida más reconocidos que se aboquen a terminar con los abusos y los bajos salarios (de pobreza) de las cadenas que los abastecen. Su trabajo ha sido instrumento para que compañías como Yum Brands, McDonalds, Burger King entre otras, abocaran la pobreza y los abusos que enfrentaban los agricultores. Brigitte es graduada de la Universidad de Notra Dame.

Eduardo Huerta

El señor Eduardo Huerta tiene muchos años de experiencia profesional trabajando en el área del derecho canónico, así como en teología. También se dedica a la enseñanza. Su experiencia en tribunales eclesiásticos incluye funciones como abogado, defensor del vinculo y juez, tanto en primera como en segunda instancia.

Sus estudios y experiencias en otros países han contribuido a su formación integral en varias culturas e idiomas haciéndolo un valioso elemento para la enseñanza y la praxis del derecho canónico. El señor Eduardo Huerta ahora se dedica a la consultoría canónica y disfruta mucho ensenar y participar como conferencista.

Conferenciantes Rev. Ignacio Larrañaga

Nació en España un 4 de mayo, en la ciudad de Azpeitia, en el Barrio Baristain, caserío Txanton. Sus padres fueron: Marcelino Larrañaga Larrañaga y María Salomé Orbegozo, quienesforman una numerosa familia compuesta por sus hijos: Josefa Ignacia que nace en 1924; Jesús en 1925; José María en 1927; Ignacio en 1928; María Ascensión en 1930; José Luis en 1931; Francisco en 1934; María del Carmen en 1937 y Javier María, en el año de 1943.A la edad de los 12 años, en 1940, ingresa al Seminario de los Capuchinos de Alsasua; poco antes de su ordenación sacerdotal, recibe el Subdiaconado el 29 de marzo de 1952, recibiendo el nombre de Jesús María de Azpeitia, en la misma ciudad de Pamplona; y recibe la ordenación el 20 de diciembre de 1952, en San Sebastián...Radicado en Chile desde 1959, desplegó un apostolado variado y fecundo.

Emprendió una serie de Semanas de convivencia Franciscana a lo largo de la angosta y larga geografía chilena. Como resultado de esta prolongada evangelización fue suscitándose con el paso de los años, un gran entusiasmo entre los integrantes de toda la familia franciscana, que no se redujo sólo a emociones o palabras, sino que fue concretizándose en proyectos preciosos. Y desde 1974, han sido 28 años ininterrumpidos aplicando Encuentros de Experiencias de Dios (EED) en 33 países de tres continentes, con un promedio de 35 a 40 Encuentros anuales y una asistencia media de 250 personas porsemana. También inicia su etapa de escritor en 1974, tardíamente, a la edad de 46 años, y hasta el año 2002 ha escrito más de 20 libros. En la actualidad está considerado como uno de los autores de mayor difusión de literatura religiosa y de autoayuda. Los Talleres de Oración y Vida (TOV), servicio eclesial aprobado por la Santa Sede desde 1997, constituyen la cumbre y coronamiento de toda su actividad apostólica —según afirma el propio Padre Ignacio Larrañaga—, por su fuerza expansiva, por sus frutos y por el alto aprecio hacia los mismos, manifestado por la Santa Sede y los Obispos, que fundó en el año de 1984, y atestigua que han pasado por sus sesiones formativas cerca de 3 millones de personas. La frase, clara y evidente, que sintetiza el camino a recorrer en Talleres de Oración y Vida es: del encanto de Dios, al encanto de la vida. En los últimos años ha desplegado una específica actividad evangelizadora a grandes masas en teatros, gimnasios, estadios sobre materias cristológicas, matrimoniales...

Pedro Moreno

Pedro A. Moreno nació en la ciudad de Nueva York y más tarde criado en la isla de Puerto Rico. Él es graduado de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico y miembro laico de la Familia Dominica, la Orden de los Predicadores.

Pedro lleva de casado mas de veintiocho años, y tiene tres hijas. Pedro es escritor con múltiples premios periodísticos y ha contribuido con regularidad a los materiales publicados por la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos para el Domingo Catequético. Como predicador laico el Sr. Moreno es solicitado para misiones parroquiales, retiros y talleres a través de los Estados Unidos.

Alejandro Ordieres

Alejandro Ordieres estudió la Licenciatura en Filosofía en la Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana, en Roma realizando también una maestría en Santo Tomás de Aquino en la Pontificia Universidad de Santo Tomás. Continuó sus estudios cursando la licenciatura de Teología con especialidad en Teología Moral. Al regresar a México, decidió orientar sus intereses cambiando al ámbito administrativo con la idea de especializarse en ética empresarial y estudió la Maestría en Administración obteniendo además, una especialidad en Finanzas en el Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. Fue Director de la Licenciatura de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales del Tecnológico de Monterrey estudiando al mismo tiempo el Doctorado en Filosofía. Ha colaborado los últimos cuatro años con la Universidad Católica de Dallas impartiendo diversas materias de Teología en el Deacon Formation Program. Actualmente es profesor de tiempo completo en el Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México de las asignaturas de Ideas e Instituciones Políticas. Juan Rendón

Juan Rendon obtuvo su licenciatura en Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de Dallas, y dos maestrías en teología y ministerio pastoral en la Universidad de Santo Tomás en Houston, Texas.

Actualmente es instructor en la Escuela Bíblica Católica de la University of Dallas School of Ministry; en la Diócesis de Dallas es parte del staff

Conferenciantes de la Oficina Pastoral para Adolescentes y Jóvenes Adultos y es instructor adjunto de teología en la Oficina de Catequesis.

Pia Septién

María Pía Septién Ramírez obtuvo su licenciatura en la Universidad de Anahuac en la ciudad de México, y una maestría en Estudios teológicos y un certificado en Administración Pastoral en la Universidad de Dallas. Actualmente está trabajando para obtener un certificado en Teología Bíblica. En el pasado, Pía Septién ha enseñado educación religiosa, negocios, y economía en una escuela privada católica en la Ciudad de México y es co-autora de una serie de libros en educaron religiosa para los grados 7 a 9. Nació y creció en la Ciudad de México y es una esposa y madre de cinco hijos.

Catarina Torres

Hace dos años Catarina Torres ha trabajado para Caridades Católicas en la oficina de misiones y preocupaciones sociales. Originalmente de Nuevo México, Catarina tiene su título en negocios y casi su MA en teología de la Universidad de Dallas. Ha viajado en misión a México, Guatemala, Honduras, y África.

Colabora con Caridades Católicas en varias organizaciones interreligiosas y es parte de la coalición del DREAM Act, la Alianza de Texas por una Reforma Migratoria, y un equipo para educación sobre las misiones. También promueve a través de su oficina, varias campañas Católicas para aliviar la pobreza. En la última junta de legislación del Estado de Texas, organizo a los miembros de las Parroquias de Dallas para apoyar la causa de la defensa de la vida, salud, servicios humanos, educación inmigración y la pena capital.

Xavier Zamarripa

Xavier Zamarripa originario de Dallas, Texas, descubrió su talento artístico a una temprana edad. Su enfoque e inquietud fue siempre el arte; Su búsqueda y pasión de querer aprender los secretos y técnicas de los grandes artistas del presente y pasado lo llevo a explorar el arte, desde México a Europa. Xavier llego a tener el honor de poder trabajar en el estudio del mosaico de la Ciudad del Vaticano, restaurando obras. Al regreso de Europa se ha dedicado al arte, diseño e instalación del mosaico bizantino y sus conocimientos adquiridos en otros medios le han permitido a experimentar y seguir innovando y creando obras nuevas que se han sido exhibidas en museos y en exhibiciones privadas. Xavier Zamarripa pone a sus ordenes su estudio localizado fuera de las Cuidad de Santa Fe, Nuevo México (xavierzamarripa.com) donde vive con su esposa y dos hermosas hijas. Dicho artista siempre está en constante búsqueda para su próxima creación de arte con la ayuda y gracia del Espíritu Santo.

Claire Wing

Claire M. Wing es un artista y diseñador litúrgica de trabajo a nivel nacional en el vidrio con plomo y arena escultura tallada de cristal de socorro, así como el diseño de los espacios de devoción, objetos litúrgicos y mobiliario ritual. Sra. Wing recibió su BFA en Bellas Artes de St. Mary’s College, haciendo el trabajo del curso a través de la Universidad de Notre Dame en los EE.UU. y en Francia en l’Université de l’Ouest Catolique y l’Ecole Regionale des Beaux Arts, tanto en Angers. “Cả chúng ta cũng rên siết trong lòng: chúng ta đã lãnh nhận Thần Khí như ân huệ mở đầu, nhưng còn trông đợi ... sự cứu chuộc thân xác chúng ta nữa” (Rom 8:23). Việc cứu chuộc thân xác là đối tượng của niềm cậy trông. Chúng ta nên suy gẫm sự cứu chuộc này để khám phá ra ý nghĩa và giá trị của đức khiết tịnh giữa xã hội trần tục này. Giờ hội thảo này sẽ khai triển sự cứu chuộc cánh chung của thân xác dưới ánh sáng của Thần Học liên quan đến Thân Xác. Sự cứu chuộc này là sự linh ứng cho sự chiến thắng tội lỗi trong cuộc sống hàng ngày, dù trong hôn nhân hay trong cuộc sống độc thân. Chúng ta sẽ chú trọng tới giáo huấn về sự kiêng cữ trong hôn nhân cũng như tự nguyện.

These artists were chosen and invited to participate in the exhibition by a committee of liturgical artists. Whether the medium is stained glass, bronze, mosaic or other traditional media, these works were created with a specific site and purpose in mind. Successful liturgical art requires collaboration between the artist, the commissioning parish and the architect. Moderator – Rev. Msgr. Donald Fischer

Msgr. Fischer is a consultant with Liturgical Design Consultancy. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 13, 1967 for the Diocese of Dallas. He served as chaplain for the University of Dallas for 13 years, amidst several varying assignments throughout the diocese. Msgr. Don presently serves as Chairman of the Sub-Commission of Sacred Places of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission, a position he has held for 30 years, presently serves as a Board Member of Breukelein Institute in New York and on the University of Dallas Board of Trustees, and has had a radio program on WRR for 20 years.

Members of the panel: Ellen Schippert

Ellen Schippert is the president of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space (ACLS), a voluntary membership organization of liturgical consultants, artists, crafters, architects, and other professional from around the U.S. dedicated to the creation of worship spaces for faith communities. Ellen is a liturgical consultant, an architect, and a United Methodist pastor. She holds a master’s of divinity from Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit and attended the Institute for Liturgical Consultants at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Linda McCray

Linda K. McCray is a creator of abstract spiritual original paintings, art-and-environment designer, art consultant for sacred space, retreat facilitator, teacher and advocate for contemporary art in worship.

Her passion in painting is translating the Gospel and sacred realities into contemporary abstract art that ignites the spiritual imagination of believers today. She is a member of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space and Christians in the Visual Arts.

Lyle Novinski

Professor Novinski is an artist, lecturer, consultant, and designer of sacred spaces. He is widely known as a lecturer of art history at the University of Dallas where he served as Chair of the Art Department for many years. His work is seen in St Rita’s, Dallas; The Chapel of the Transfiguration, Rome, Italy; Furnishings for the Church of the Incarnation, UD; Holy Trinity, UD; Perkins Chapel & Chapel of the Annunciation at the Neuhauf Chapel, SMU; Prince of Peace, Plano; St Gabriel’s, McKinney and many other installations in the region.

History of the 2010 UDMC Cross The Crucifix of Heri Bert Bartscht Lyle Novinski, Professor Emeritus of Art for the University of Dallas

In the midst of the terrible winter of bitter fighting at Stalingrad, the high water mark of the German invasion of Russia in the Second World War, a young German artist soldier froze his feet and was sent back to Germany to recuperate. Hitler had ordered the German forces to die to the last man to avoid any retreat from the front at Stalingrad.

The young soldier was Heri Bert Bartscht, who emigrated to Texas in the mid 50’s and established a reputation as a sculptor in Dallas, winning many awards. He joined the University of Dallas Art Department in 1961.

Professor Bartscht carved the figure from a slender native Texas red cedar log, adding the arms pegged in place, and reserving the lighter colored sapwood, the living portion of the tree, for the loincloth of the figure.

Immediately after World War II many artists in Europe made crucifixes that responded to the War. The Vatican Museum of Modern Sacred Art includes many of these pieces.

The art seemed to be a universal response to the horrors of the war experience, the devastated cities, the destruction of millions of people in indescribable ways.

Heri Bartscht responded with this piece in like manner, even after coming to peaceful Dallas. For years I have placed his crucifix within a framework of the Expressionist movement in the 20th century, where 58

the exact replication of the human form was avoided in favor of stronger expressions of emotion. But recently, I noticed that the work is not directed toward the suffering of the human body of Christ, but toward another expression. Heri’s Christ is not angled, sagging in death, nor distorted in pain; the feet, though pinioned, are relaxed over each other and the hands are open. The face, however, with its open eyes and mouth is not experiencing an external suffering of pain, but rather an internal one, a witness to the horror that Christ observes.

What Heri Bartscht has placed within this piece is Christ’s reaction to man’s devastation and from His omniscience, what man will inflict in the future. Heri’s work emphasizes that the corpus is both God and Man in His Incar nation. This insight, indicating both the earthly physical pain and the divine foreknowledge of the future, is particularly apropos today. It separates it from representations of the Crucifixion which only emphasize the suffering of a temporal body. Professor Bartscht’s Christ is subject to physical pain, but far deeper is the open-eyed horror at witnessing the human figures of His creation in mutual painful destruction at Stalingrad, and today, and in the future.

The 2010 UDMC Mosaic Project The University of Dallas Ministry Conference committee is proud to announce the 2010 UDMC Family Place Mosaic Project.

This summer and fall, mosaic artists from around the world have been sharing their artistic talent to promote hope and healing at The Family Place, the largest shelter for domestic violence in the DFW metroplex. By contributing one or more 6 x 6 inch “mini-mosaics” to the UDMC Family Place Mosaic Project, the artists and their work will have a direct effect on children and their parents suffering from domestic violence. Over 80 artists from around the world sent at least one “mini-mosaic” to contribute to this awe-inspiring project.

This weekend, during the 2010 University of Dallas Ministry Conference, area artists and volunteers are assembling all of the mini-mosaics they have received from around the world into a triptych of colorful images. The mosaic and the participating mosaic assembly volunteers are a focal point of the conference, located at the very center of the exhibit hall. We invite you to visit the mosaic in progress, learning about the mission of The Family Place in the process.

The mosaic installation is a collage of images containing hearts, flowers and butterflies - happy and welcoming graphics for those entering The Family Place’s intake service lounge. When the mosaic is finished, the triptych will be framed and installed at The Family Place. We hope our collaborative artwork will be a soothing, creative and colorful welcome to incoming Family Place clients.
