This training will provide a thorough introduction to the Components for Enhancing Career Experience and Reducing Trauma (CE-CERT) model. Developed by Dr. Brian Miller, CE-CERT is a skills-based approach to improving provider well-being and effectiveness in working with primary traumatic stress. CE-CERT posits that secondary traumatic stress is not developed in response to mere exposure to others’ trauma stories but occurs when feeling overwhelmed or helpless. The five skill domains of CE-CERT i.e., experiential engagement, decreasing rumination, conscious narrative, reducing emotional labor, and parasympathetic recovery will be taught through both didactic and experiential activities.

The EBI interview is tailored to an individual’s unique personality in order to induce instrumental problem solving. It begins with creating an atmosphere that encourages an interviewee to share what is most important to them and to talk at their own pace. This open narrative is then followed by the use of clarification questions, specific “tracer round” questions and the strategic introduction of evidence. The EBI philosophy focuses on gaining accurate information and corroboration, with confession being a byproduct of the successful conversation.

Child abuse and child homicide cases are extremely difficult to investigate. This is not only because of highly-charged emotions, but also because at first glance these cases frequently appear to be accidents. This course will be taught from a multi-disciplinary perspective with each instructor providing a unique viewpoint to these investigations.

ABOUT OUR TRAINING
This course is designed to show officers and prosecutors how to draft affidavits and search warrants that will meet any attack from the defense in a Motion to Suppress. The instructors walk the students through the entire process of gathering sufficient probable cause, articulating that probable cause in a search warrant affidavit, and insuring that the search warrant authorizes the officer to search and seize all contraband and evidence relevant to the investigation. Common and not-so-common mistakes are discussed, and the students are given various affidavits and search warrants for their review to see if they can spot mistakes and potential challenges. Solutions are then provided which show how to properly write the affidavit and search warrant in the various scenarios.
