Smoke coming from fire caused slow down on the freeway.

O Structure Fire(s) on Mc Groarty Thursday Night

T

he first fire called in was at 6:37PM and the address was 8140 W McGroarty St; http://bit.ly/34YLxLi; in Sunland. After extinguishing a fire in a small out building at 8140 McGroarty St, the responding fire units saw another fire’s smoke coming from a nearby two-story ascending hillside home at 8277 McGroarty St.

They then called in for additional units and the arriving firefighters found a fire on the second floor which had extended up into the attic and onto the grass adjacent to the structure. 28 LAFD firefighters extinguished the fire in both structures and the vegetation in 30 minutes (the second address, is owned by a local realtor and only required

14 minutes to extinguish). There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation; FS 74; Batt 12; Council District 7; (Battalion Command) BC12 BC14 (Engine) E24, E289, E298, E77, E89 and E91 were on scene along with (Rescue Ambulance) RA74, RA77 RA898, and (Truck) T89 & T98.■

n Thursday, September 5th, 2019, The La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild (LCGOG) held their first meeting after a summer break at the home of Linda Labrie. Foremost on the agenda was planning for the annual fundraiser, The Book and Author Luncheon to be held at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club on Tuesday, October22, 2019. Three books will be for sale; two authors will present a brief summary of their books and the third author of a limited-edition cookbook will not be in attendance.■

A

t 2:30PM; a fire was spotted on the East Bound 210 at Van Nuys Blvd. http://bit.ly/2JMOEj6; #Pacoima; The Los Angeles Fire Department, Angeles National Forest and L.A. County resources took on the reportedly arson fire. Their resources remained on the scene conducting extensive overhaul operations to clear out approximately 1,000 hay bales to ensure complete extinguishment of the fire. The LAFD worked to release all outside agencies as additional crews arrived on scene. One RV was destroyed by the fire and no injuries reported.■

COMMUNITY NEWS Hertzberg Announces Cannabis Banking Bill to Wait Until 2020

S

ACRAMENTO – Senate Majority Leader Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) announced today that he will not be advancing SB 51 this year, but emphasized his commitment to work together with sponsor Fiona Ma and the Governor’s Office to iron out necessary clarifications and implementation details. “If we’re going to do this, we have to do it right,” said Hertzberg. “We owe it to the dozens of cities, counties, and cannabis industry officials who have been supporting this effort to see it through.” “I will continue to champion this issue on behalf of business investors as well as constituents that voted for a healthy, legal cannabis industry in California,” said Treasurer Fiona Ma, co-sponsor of the measure. “I remain committed and am looking forward to working with Governor New-

som and Senator Hertzberg on SB 51 as a top priority for January when the Legislature reconvenes.” SB 51 would permit private banks and credit unions to apply for a limited-purpose, state-chartered bank license that doesn’t interact with the federal system, allowing licensed cannabis-related businesses to open accounts and deposit income. The Majority Leader intends to move the bill when the Legislature reconvenes in January for the second half of the 2019-2020 Session. Because the bill contains an urgency clause and has already cleared a majority of legislative hurdles, there remains a path for it to go into effect in early 2020. For more information, visit Senator Hertzberg’s website and follow @SenateHertzberg on Twitter.■

he United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service is accepting applications for more than 1,500 temporary positions for spring and summer 2020 at national forests and public lands throughout California, the agency announced in a news release. Applications will be accepted from Sept. 16 through Sept. 30. Jobs are available in a variety of occupational fields, including fire, recreation, wildlife and fisheries, botany, timber, engineering, visitor services, and archaeology, the Forest Service said in a news release. Locally, fire position opportunities are available in Fawskin near Big Bear, Idyllwild, Lytle Creek near

Fontana, and San Bernardino. These opportunities include jobs on fire engines and hotshot crews, at two helitack bases, and at the air tanker base in San Bernardino, according to San Bernardino National Forest Public Affairs Officer Zach Behrens. Previous firefighting experience is not required for all positions. Interested candidates can apply at USAJobs.gov, or learn more about job opportunities here. The Pacific Southwest Region of the Forest Service manages 20 million acres of National Forest land in California and assists the state and private forest landowners in California, Hawaii and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands.■

Interested candidates can apply at USAJobs. gov, or learn more about job opportunities here.

he Los Angeles Fire Department Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) is a group of volunteers who use amateur (ham) radio to back-up and supplement the city’s radio system. One of our key facilities is old Fire Station 77 in Sun Valley. This is our main link between the City Emergency Operations Center and the San Fernando Valley. It will be crucial in a major disaster. Unfortunately, the station

was burglarized in the past week or so. All of our radios and some peripheral equipment was stolen and the station was vandalized. The equipment belongs to the group and was obtained either as surplus City equipment or through donations, mostly by our members. We are out of business at the location until we can acquire new equipment. If you saw anything suspicious at the location in the past week or so, please let us know. ■

Noise Within (ANW), California’s acclaimed classic repertory theatre company, is proud to present the first chronological chapter in Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s American Century Cycle, Gem of the Ocean, directed by Gregg T. Daniel. Daniel previously directed ANW’s Ovation Award and Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award-nominated production of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun for the theatre’s 2017-2018 season. Gem of the Ocean will run Sept. 22 through Nov. 16. August Wilson unfolds the African American legacy in the first chronological episode of his celebrated American Century Cycle—a soaring, mystical tale of a man desperate for redemption in 1904 Pittsburgh. Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old “soul cleanser,” sends him on a spiritual journey that dissects the nature of freedom amidst oppression and spurs him to take up the mantle of justice. “It’s enormously gratifying to be working with the first installment of August Wilson’s ambitious ten play cycle,” said Director Gregg T. Daniel. “Gem of the Ocean is a play filled with myth, mysticism, folklore, and history; it’s a uniquely American story.” Gem of the Ocean will transport audiences from Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District, where Wilson grew up and famously made the setting for his ten-play American Century Cycle, to the mythical homeland in the play known as the City of Bones. Director Gregg T. Daniel recruited Scenic Designer Stephanie Kerley Schwartz, who was tasked with the challenge of bringing the two worlds together on stage. “The play’s action takes place inside of a house, which serves as both stalwart protection from the outside world, and as a portal to a place of transformation and personal significance,” said Scenic Designer Stephanie Kerley Schwartz. “The goal is to settle the audience into the day to day activities of life in this interior space, and then break it all apart to transport them on a mythical journey led by an elder from another age on a voyage of powerful ancient rituals.” Gem of the Ocean is the first August Wilson play that A Noise With-
