his year had three groups providing the best in sounds, food and friends and the chance for everyone to participate in all or one of them. The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council did a “community based” advertising program designed to bring in people from the apartments and homes surrounding Bolton Hall to come and meet their community leaders, have great variety of food, dance, and for fun, eat tacos and large slices of watermelon. The larger more organized ones like Sunland Park and Stonehurst Park brought literally hundreds of people to share ribs, tri-tips, BBQ chicken, sausages, corn bread and tables of deserts with their local cops.

Arnie Abramyan and Phil Tabby Jr. put on a spread that was incredible in the amount of food they personally prepared. Their feasts were so spectacular that it was almost like watching an ocean wave of people as they went from one NNO site to another every 30, minutes and it was fun hearing people comparing the food of each site and which one had the most and best meats and deserts. NO ONE went away less than stuffed. The Stonehurst soiree’ had the best food of the three sites, and even GAVE OUT TUPPERWARE containers to take home food in. The Sunland-Tujunga sites were a community event that was co-sponsored by the neighborhood council, and the Stonehurst NNO was sponsored by Phil Tabbi and the Sun Valley organizations. Be sure to attend the 2020 NNO in your neighborhood.■ THE FOOTHILLS PAPER is published bi-weekly. All content is copyrighted and may not be reproduced without written consent of the publisher. What Lies Above the Clouds!

L

a Cañada Flintridge, CA - On Saturday, September 7 at 5:00 PM, Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes Emmy Award-winning helicopter cameraman and author David Alan Arnold. Arnold has written two memoirs, Help from Above: How I Went from Sweeping the Floor to Painting the Sky and What Lies Above the Clouds: A True Crime Story. In these books, he shares stories from his personal and professional lives, including thrilling, challenging and sometimes death-defying moments. David Alan Arnold’s name is synonymous with aerial cinematography like Evil Knievel’s with motorcycle jumping. He’s the best in the business and a generous soul to boot. There’s no better guy to fly with. - Decker Watson, Executive Producer, DEADLIEST CATCH Arnold started his Hollywood career with a broom in his hand. Somehow, sweeping the floor got him into some of the world’s biggest TV shows. David’s first book Help

from Above tells the unlikely story of mistakes and miracles that took him to some of the most dangerous places on Earth. In his second memoir, What Lies Above the Clouds, Arnold takes us on a life and death adventure flying for the television shows. But, he also gets into adventures at home, picking a fight with an organized crime

ring of kidnappers, drug dealers, and murderers who terrified his town. One of David Alan Arnold’s earliest childhood memories is a surreal experience of floating up from his crib and flying out a window. It must have been a dream. Today, David’s job as Airborne Cinematographer flies him around the world, for movies like James Bond and TV shows like Ice Road. Truckers, Deadliest Catch, Amazing Race, The World Series, Survivor, and Super Bowl. Arnold has a home in Tujunga, California. When not flying, David volunteers to help his community. For more information, contact Gail Mishkin at (818) 790-0717. Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse is located at 1010 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011, at the intersection of Foothill Blvd. and the Angeles Crest Hwy. Take the Angeles Crest exit off the 210, turn south, make a right onto Foothill Blvd., and turn left onto Chevy Chase. Parking is in the rear of the store.■

POPS

M

ichael Feinstein heated up the Los Angeles County Arboretum on August 3rd with an evening solely devoted to one of America’s most beloved musical icons for Cole Porter Night. Smart and sophisticated with a naughty boy’s streak for mischief, Porter was in that rare echelon of songwriters who wrote both words and music. He roared through the 20’s dazzling the Paris social scene, dominated the Broadway stage through the 50’s, and remains wildly popular today with audiences of all ages humming along to his timeless songs. Feinstein gives you a backstage pass into Cole Porter’s world for an evening of classics with “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “I Love Paris,” “Ridin’ High, “Night and Day” and many more of your favorites. Michael Feinstein is no stranger to Cole Porter’s songbook, having performed his music on many occasions, including with Marvin Hamlisch and the Pasadena POPS years ago. But with the orchestra now under his

baton, this evening’s program presents a new experience for both Feinstein and the audience. “This will be the first time that I have put together a Porter program that I conduct with an orchestra and so it gave me the opportunity to pull out some instrumental arrangements that I have been saving for this occasion, states Feinstein.” Among these, he will premiere a selection of works that have never been heard publicly, “or at least not in 70 years.” Also performed is a new Cole Porter overture by Resident Pops Conductor Larry Blank and the original overture from Broadway’s “Anything Goes,” dating back to 1934. Guest star Mitzi Gaynor was a surprise guest that even at 87 could belt out a duo with Feinstein. One of the fun parts was listening to her talk about the stars she worked with, like Ethel Merman and Gene Kelly. It was a great evening under the stars and the brilliant red sunset.■

Brent Talmo:

An Unsung Hero!

Photo of Brent Talmo when presented with the Medal Of Valor.

“The bad stuff is easier to believe. You ever notice that?” -Julia Roberts In Pretty Woman By David DeMulle

H

istory is littered with those who made great discoveries, performed great deeds or just changed the World, but what about those names that only appear in our everyday lives? Names that don’t jump out at you like Einstein or Pasteur? Think about it. Did they break with convention? Did they offend the establishment? Were they quiet about their accomplishments? Possibly all of those things. In this series, I’m going to start off with four people that I personally know and con- sider to have been movers and shakers in our community but who have mysteriously escaped becoming household names. I’m going to try and set the record straight and give them credit where credit is due. I really hope that you the reader, will contribute names and stories of your “unsung heroes.” Those who make you feel good when you hear their names. Everyday people doing everyday things. Things that make life easier and safer for those around us. I want you to think about the last time you really read a great uplifting story. I know that you have read stories about the dog that saved his

master or how the bear wandering the neighborhood was safely returned to the wild. But the truth is that happy stories are far and few be- tween. And what about the story that was so terrible you had to re-read it, and when you wanted to be updated on the story, it had just simply disappeared? “Old News” they say.

Their stories are never really covered. That is, not until the sensationalist media needs material for a dull edition. Then the truth gets bent. Actually distorted, all in the name of “creating” a news story. One of these victims was Brent Talmo, and I want to set the record straight. Brent started his law en-

Medals that Brent Won for service above and beyond. Today, we are going to talk about Brent Talmo, a Neighbor. When Brent Talmo retired from the Maywood Police Department in 2008 he never planned on seeing his service records on the Internet. He was just another person, a neighbor, a community member that did his job and went home every night. But like the “masked crusader” who retires to his secret identity and tries to forget the daily mayhem that surrounded him, our police officers have to go back to their homes, wives and families.

forcement career by joining the Los Angeles County Sheriff department in 1986 and then moved on to the Los Angeles Housing Authority Police Department in 1990 and the Hawaiian Gardens Police department long known for its gang-infested areas and high crime rates. He stayed with them until Hawaiian Gardens P.D. closed in 1998. The Maywood Police Dept. was his next assignment and he was assigned as a training officer to the patrol division and later became a Senior Lead Officer in the Los Angeles Housing

Authority drug elimination program. Moving up through the ranks he became a field training officer, acting sergeant and team leader. He became a Sergeant and was assigned to the detectives division in April 2004. Not only was Talmo a dedicated officer but he went the extra mile in his skills and training as an emergency medical technician and drug recognitions expert. He took classes on problem-oriented policing of SWAT operations and a course in Handling People with Tact and Diplomacy and as a Peacemaker. Talmo was involved in, and given awards for working with the Traffic Collisions Board, the Special Response Teams, and for being a team leader. Talmo was presented the Police Star Award and given the MEDAL OF VALOR twice. This is highest award given by the HAPD. This is a man who learned by his mistakes and became an example for all to follow. But nobody would know what he did before he retired. Heroes don’t toot their own horn. That is why Brent Talmo is our “Unsung Hero!” If you have an “Unsung Hero,” please send their story to us at this e-mail address: editor@thefoothillspaper.com.■
