01. BOISROND TENNERE, primary school. Petionville, Haiti. 2018 Article 25

When I joined this project, it was already under construction. My intervention focused on the detail and remedial work design. The Boisrond Tonnere is a primary school that educates children from low income backgrounds. The school is located in Haiti’s capital city Port-au-Prince. During the devastating 2010 earthquake most of the city was destroyed, including a large part of the Boisrond Tonnere School. The school provide a safe educational space for over 200 students. In anticipation of water shortages, Max Fordham and our sefs have designed a rainwater collection tank and an underground water cistern that collect and store rainwater during Petionville’s wet seasons. A niche outdoor learning space was incorporated into the architectural plans, with the aim of creating an intimate outdoor gathering and socializing area. Built-in benches, a timber pergola for shade and blackboards allows for this corner to be used for teaching and learning. One of the biggest design considerations for the Boisrond Tonnere School was its earthquake resilience. To this end, several design modifications were incorporated into the basic reinforced concrete frame of buildings: 1. Using simple, symmetrical, and low-rise forms which perform better during earth tremors, 2. Classrooms form sismically strong small boxes, 3. All structural elements are tied together to avoid dislocation during an earthquake, including pad foundations which are tied together using ground beams, 4. Balconies are cantilevered rather than supported on columns so that the structure is unified and integrated, 5. Openings are uniformly distributed in elevation, 6. Seismic gaps are provided between irregular shapes

03. CHILD SUPPORT TANZANIA INCLUSIVE PRE-SCHOOL, Mbeya, Tanzania. 2018/2019. At Aticle 25, London.

I joined this project in the design phase. It is a project that has undergone many changes over time, which has had to adapt to new laws and difficulties that have been required in the process. In the construction phase it required a huge revision of the masterplan. In this project I had the opportunity to participate in all phases of project realization. Recent figures show that 98% of children with disabilities in Africa are not in school. The Tanzanian government in 2010 introduced a ground-breaking policy that ensured that disabled children have the right to primary and secondary education, yet this has so far been difficult for existing schools to fully implement due to the fact that schools are not built with disabled children in mind. The Child Support Tanzania School runs a pre-school for children with physical and mental disabilities to enable them to join a mainstream school curriculum at age five. The school also integrates able-bodied children who make friends with the disabled though their life at the school and learn that a disability is not a handicap in life. The current school operated by Child Support Tanzania has significantly outgrown its premises. Able Child Africa, a UK based charity which exclusively works with and for disabled children in Africa, and Child Support Tanzania have asked us to design a new school campus on a government donated site. The design includes spacious, well-lit classrooms for 160 children, a dining hall, music rooms, computer rooms, physiotherapy spaces, a hydrotherapy pool, a sensory garden and outdoor play areas and a sports field. The design is intended to be a model to inform the construction of other schools in Tanzania that want to become inclusive schools.

03. PARTAMENTO NA IFANTE SANTO. Lisbon, Portugal. 2015. At BPM, aquitectura lda.

The apartment located on Avenida Infante Santo is part of one of the apartment blocks of the housing complex designed by architects Alberto Jose Pessoa, Hernani Guimaraes Gandra and Joao Abel Manta in 1955. The new design sought the spatial and architectural enhancement of existing housing, promoting wider spaces. On the first floor are located the social and service spaces and in the second three rooms and two sanitary facilities. Through a surgical intervention and reducing underutilized circulation areas, social and private spaces are compensated, adapting the program to the new requirements of a specific family program. It is proposed to use the lioz stone on floors, benches and masonry, the original stone of the building, the recovery of the floors in wood mahogany and the design of new cabinets in white lacquered wood reinforcing the continuity of the original characterization of the spaces. From the proposed initial occupancy program, we emphasized the need to build a third sanitary facility to support the two single rooms located on the upper floor. The design of this new space will drain their sewage, by gravity, to the only vertical column available, located on the north side of the apartment. For this vertical lines flow still other sewers of housing: sanitary installation suite, the small toilet located on the first floor and all kitchen equipment and sewage.

03. BOLOGNA SHOAH MEMORIAL, Internacional competition. 2015. At BPM, aquitectura lda.

The proposal refuses to convene the living memory of a particular human community to its special and local identity, looking instead to «(...) address the living memory of all men, to remind them of the events that put into question their status as human» (F, Shoay). We understand the existing railway platform as a counterpart, seeking to build with it - through the mystery of art process - the language of the symbol. As Romano Guardini quotes «(...)the symbol, while satisfying the condition to reflect a positive and precises tate of mind, should - conforming here to the general law of artwork - rise above the particular. He wi/I not only be responsible for expressing an accidental physical content unique ¡n time, but he will also be invested with a general message addressed to the soul and to human life. Thus constituted he will be accessible to all and saturated with universality». The new structure look for spaces to linger, accepting and interacting whit the existing site: (j) the square’s outline will not be trespassed; (ii) the external fencing system, towards the railways, will not be replaced; (iii) square’s existing floor will not be changed and will not be damaged by any kind of holes or assemblies. Two elevated metallic structures involve, without touching, the existing ventilation walls. Both sides of the square will be separated by a continuous structure of wood ‘patch work’, which stresses the idea of an imprisoned mutilation. The six meters high modular metallic fence guides the weave of mutilated tree brunches. The proposal underlines the character of the in between walls, emphasizing the transition between both sides of the existing square. The six meters diameter cylinder space, open towards the sky, - built whit recycled wooden trunks and painted in sky blue -, embraces, inside, a circular bench. «lnscrutably involved, we live, says Buber, in the currents of universal reciprocity». The blue sky wall and the circular bench, underline, together, the idea that we all are the sky: «Ail real living is meeting: (...) every’ person born into the world represents something new, something that never existed before, something original and unique» (M. Buber). The presence of a permanent light within the mutilated tree branches, - connecting the sky space with the southwest square-, updates, beyond space and time, the idea of a eternal light. «The work of memory, here, (...) possible only by the exclusion of (...) utilitarian or everyday function has to be understood in the horizon ofthefuture as a (...) task to be continued ¡n the conscious fulfilment of our condition as men» (F. Shoay).

04. QUINTA DO CASTELO, Consolata Missionaries. Cacem, Portugal. 2015. At BPM, aquitectura lda.

Property of Missionary Institute of Consolata (IMC), the Quinta do Castelo with an area of approximately 55 thousands square meters, has a set of constructions and annexes that have been being adapted towards the objective of a dynamization plan, started by the IMC priests in the year 2013. The intervention made in 2015 aimed to readapt the space of a construction annexed to the main house and of a covered area designed to accommodate the holding of events for groups. The existing building had 3 large rooms located on two separate floors; a living room with fireplace on the ground floor and two rooms located on the first floor prepared to accommodate various groups. The base program, designed in conjunction with the IMC Fathers, aimed at redefining the uses of these spaces, the circulation optimizing and the integration of these constructions in the environment and architecture of Quinta do Castelo.

The program involved: - the construction of a new kitchen, equipped and prepared for the confection of approximately 200 meals; - the construction of a new volume adjacent to the new kitchen, intended for the collection of new sanitary facilities and two pantries to support kitchen operation; - The reconfiguration of the existing porch, providing a space with capacity to accommodate events (and meals) for 100 seated people; - the construction of a storeroom to support the porch area; - the reconfiguration of the people movements within the existing building, guaranteeing the possibility of passage between spaces and the access to stairs for the upper floor; - execution of a shading pergola over the intervention whole width; - rebuilding the access ladder to the first floor by reducing its slope and resizing the steps; - implementation of new gas, electricity and water supply networks.

02. CHARMING HOTEL. Troia, Portugal. Final academic project.

This exercise consisted of a relocation strategy for a Charming Hotel, defined in the detail plan UNOP04. This operational unit is essentially characterized by the presence of the lake, by the river Sado bank, it also integrates the National Ecological Reserve - where is included the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve - and by roman ruins. The choice of the location, comes from a logic of views and the alignment with the ruins and the lake area. The surrounding landscape is characterized by sandy ground with dunes and a vegetation that protects it against erosion, maintaining the natural balance and the landscape character. The proposed hotel is to be implemented on the bank of the lake, unfolding itself over the bank. Its surroundings favor visual contact with the area of the roman ruins - with highlights over the Sotto-Mayor palace and the Our Lady’s Chapel located in higher ground -, the surrounding vegetation and the lake under the influence of tides. At low tide, a vast area of marsh is revealed, allowing the observation of inumerous birds. The hotel consists of a main volume on the terrain where it is accessed, unfolding in four other volumes supported by pillars, that rises them above the dunes and the lagoon. The entrance volume houses the receptions, the auditorium and sitting areas, while the bedrooms, the SPA and the restaurant progress throughout the arms that unfolds from the main volume. The technical and service areas are located on a lower level below the main volume. The program is developed from a logic of views, which cross the various volumes of the building. To provide a sensible framework with the surrounding and, to respect the terrain characteristics, wood was the chosen material, the whole building is developed on pillars. The outer space was also manipulated in a way to create living ares and to offer a pleasant contact with nature.
