alliard is an old style, serif typeface, which was designed by Matthew Carter. The typeface issued by the Mergenthaler Linotype Company in 1978. It is based on a sixteenth century type designer, Robert Garnjon.

ITC Galliard is a distinuished typeface for text because the italic font-style is very distinctive in occasional events such as invitations & informal announcements.

arter’s father, Harry Carter,was a typographer, book designer and type historian. He introduced Matthew to type. After five years, carter visited New York, where he made a transition from a type-maker to a type designer.

He worked as a freelance typographer in London for few years, and then relocated to a job at Mergenthaler Linotype in New York City in 1965. He designed several new typefaces for photocomposition such as Snell Roundhand.

He had more than fifty years’ experience of typographic technologies heading from hand-cut punches to computer fonts.

He got the chance to worked with Alan Fletcher, Colin Forbes, Bob Gill, Derek Birdsall, David Collins and many others to produce numerous sans serif faces.

ITC Galliard Pro is a version released in 2010, which characters support Central European languages. The OpenType features in the font involve numerators, fractions, old style proportional tabular figures, ligatures, small caps, ordinals, case sensitive forms, scientific inferiors, stylistic alternates and superscript.

ITC Galliard eText is a version that is designed by Carl Crossgrove in 2013. It is adjusted for on-screen use. Some changes were applied such as adjusted thick to thin ratio, increased lowercase heights, more open counters, increased inter-character spacing. However, The family includes 4 fonts in 2 weights and 1 width, with a complementary italics.

eeing the types of Granjon inspired Carter and Mike Parker. Carter worked sporadically throughout the 1960s and into 1970s on Galliard typeface and it was released in 1978 and published by Mergenthaler Linotype Company.

ITC Galliard is a version reissued by international Typeface Corporation. Carter represented the family of his type, which contains 8 fonts in 4 weights and 1 width, with complementary italics and in 1982, the typeface was available for the public and subscribers.

How did Matthew Carter designed Galliard typeface?

The original Galliard typeface belongs to Robert Granjon, a French type desiger, when he cut an 8-point font, which he named “Galliard” after the lively dance of the period in 1570. In 1975, Mike Parker, the director of Typographic Development at Mergenthaler Linotype, discovered Granjon’s punches & matrices.

Parker’s heart was stolen by this typeface.

He wanted the entire world to see its attractive letters. Later, Matthew Carter met Parker at Mergenthaler Linotype, where they shared their explanations of the original one. In 1978, Carter’s typeface was finally published and he named it Galliard after Granjon’s term.

Galliard is a combination of traditional concepts with today´s advanced technology.
