Assignment
I have been asked to create a 3 bedroom house in Edinburgh for a couple with 2 children. My aim is to achieve a sustainable house for this family and include all the clients requirements into the house.
Where the building is located
The building is in Newhaven, Edinburgh. It is in-between Granton and Leith. It's located in the north of Edinburgh and started out as a fishing village
The locations has prime transport routes going through it as the A901 goes right past the site. As well public transport also having great access to buses like the 7,11 and 16 which all go to the city center.
The average house price in the area is £308,518. It is a affluent area this also can been seen in terms of the shops and amenities in the area
Site
Plan
The site is located across a beautiful sea which will bring calm ocean noises and seagull noises. Not far from the site is Starbank park which is opened to the public. Due to it being opened to the public it can cause the family to here a lot of noise from dogs and people but it bring lots of natural smells from the trees and different plants. It is also great for the 2 children to go and play in during their free time.
This is a site plan that my group and I created as part of our coursework. We added a key area to clearly point out all the different objects. We added things like wind direction, traffic flow and even the sun direction. These are some of the important things I had to and research in order to build a long lasting sustainable house with zero issues.
• This is the ground floor plan for this house. I made sure to add in everything the client wanted and I was able to add extra just because there was more space available I added a spare room and the client is allowed to turn it into whatever they want eg a playroom, game room, office etc
Ground Floor Plan
Above the door I added a little shelter just to protect the door from any rain as Edinburgh seems to rain quite a bit
I created 2 sections one passing through the front door of the house and another passing through the living room and kitchen
It was vital for me to leave some space for the back garden as the client has stated that they have 2 kids. This will be great for outdoor activities and keeping the kids busy
In between the kitchen and living room there is and empty space, this is so the client can decide whether they want to add a breakfast table or whatever they think best suits that space
I also added a pantry/laundry room with plenty of space to be both. It is tucked in next to the kitchen and dining room providing easy access and best to keep the kitchen nice and clean instead of having all the food in the kitchen and laundry in the kitchen which is common in Edinburgh
This is the first floor for this house. It was important to me to add in all the client’s requirements and some extra ideas of my own with the free space
First Floor Plan
In the en-suite bathroom which is attached to the master bedroom I separated the toilet from the rest of the bathroom to prevent any germs from spreading and allowing space and privacy
With the free space in the bottom left I thought this was the perfect opportunity to add a balcony. This is perfect as the building is located straight across from a beautiful sea.
For the kids rooms I decided to create a Jack and Jill bathroom. This is so both kids have the opportunity to have a bathroom in their room and it will be easier for the parents to access both kids. But for when they get older there’s locks on the door to provide privacy. The bedrooms are even big enough to build stuff such as built in desk, beds etc
Around the house there are built in closet and storage spaces just like this one here. The master bedroom and one of the kids bedroom also have their own walk in closet
Elevation
The scale for this Elevation is 1:50.
Here you can see the front of the building contains three windows. Two large windows on the ground floor and one small window on the first floor. I highlighted them yellow to make them stand out
The single front door is also visible and I have highlighted it in blue. And above the door you can see the shelter that is designed to protect the door from terrible weather
The front of balcony is also visible in this elevation.
Precedent- Exterior Aesthetic
• The exterior brick is painted white which makes the house look modern and makes it stand out compared to the usual Edinburgh houses. It makes the house look fresh, rich and clean.
• For the roof I have decided to use Sandtoft Calderdale Edge Roof Tiles to contrast with the white brick. The black roof tiles can absorb heat making it hotter inside which is perfect for the cold Edinburgh weather.
• For the driveway I used ready mixed concrete because it is ideal for time keeping as it eliminates the need for onsite mixing equipment setup and dismantling. It also has a reasonable price and it is eco-friendly
Exterior
• Due to this building being located in front of a busy road which can cause a lot of road noise and near a popular park which attract lots of people and animals I decided to add a few large trees in front of the house. This helps block out the majority of the noise making the property a more calm and peaceful place and provides the family more privacy. I also made sure to add a lot of greenery around the building to provide shelter for animals and absorb moisture.
Precedents- Main Aesthetic
The interior walls and ceiling will be painted white to make the home look bigger and spacious.
The window frames made out of wood are painted black to contrast with the white bricks.
The floor boards are grey oak laminate flooring as wood is easier to clean than carpet.
Lights
For the lights, I have decided that LED lights would be the best choice of lights for this house as they have many pros and they are efficient. LED lights are 100% recyclable and contain no toxic materials. They are made with epoxy lenses, not glass which make them more resistant from breakage.
Radiator
• For the heating in the house I decided that gas radiators would be best for the house. They have become more common and they are extremely efficient.
• Gas radiators produce maximum heat from the moment they are switched on and heat the home much faster than electric radiators which is ideal considering this building is in Edinburgh
• Gas radiators also use less energy with almost all its energy going towards heating the home.
Precedent- Kitchen Aesthetic
The cabinets are made out of wood and are painted a blue grey colour. This is to give the house more colour as it tends to be more black white.
The flooring is white marble which tends to be quite expensive but easy to maintain and fits in perfectly with the houses aesthetic
The cabinet handles are long and gold and the cabinet knobs are leaf carved to contrast with the rectangular shaped handles
Precedent- Bathroom Aesthetic
For the family bathrooms I have added silver handles and shower heads. It makes it easy to clean especially with children in the house
The cabinets are black with a stripped design. It’s wooden with a smooth texture. The black cabinets bring a luxury feel and are fairly easy to maintain
For the floor and wall tiles I have added grey marble tiles. They last longer and look elegant.
En-suite bathroom
The En-suite bathroom which is part of the master bedroom has white marble floor and wall tiles. The tiles have a golden pattern on it. The gold makes the bathroom look rich
The bathroom cabinets and toilet are white with a smooth polished texture making the bathroom look clean. It also makes the bathroom feel more open and spacious.
And for the shower, I have added a clear glass shower with golden handles and shower head to match with the golden tiles and gold handles tying everything together
