LEWIS Savings Masterclass

Far too many people think "savings rates are so low, why bother doing anything?” Yet, while rates are indeed spitworthily low, don’t be complacent. Acve, on-the-ball savers can grab up to 6% interest. So I want to give you a rate -boosng masterclass. The aim's to put every penny where it earns the max interest. Many specialist higher-rate accounts only let you pay in limited amounts for short amounts of me. So if you've big savings, you need to fill them up, then snowball on to the next best, and so on. Don’t overly worry about safety. All UK-regulated savings (which all the accounts below are) have the full £85,000 per person, per financial instuon savings safety protecon. Yet that’s not a reason to just put money in and forget about it. Monitor rates every few months and if they drop, ditch and switch. First, clear expensive debts. The highest guaranteed return for savings comes from clearing expensive debts, starng with the highest rates. If your debts cost more than your savings earn aer tax, clear what you can and you’re onto a winner. This applies to mortgages too, unless you’ve early repayment penales. Though with a mortgage, always have a cash emergency fund in savings before clearing it. Earn 6% AER in a regular saver, PLUS free £100 The highest rate on the market is a regular savings account, but it's only available to new or exisng Firstdirect.com current account customers. Though as First Direct's won every customer service poll I've ever done and currently offers £100 to switch to it, that's sll an aracve proposion. Its 6% regular saver lets you put up to £300 a month away for a year and the rate's fixed. HSBC.co.uk customers get 4% AER on a similar product, while anyone can get the LeedsBuildingSociety.co.uk regular saver at 3.05% AER. Full info and more best buys at mse.me/regularsaver Use current accounts to get 5% AER easy access I always used to say “never store cash in current accounts, as you earn nothing". While that sll holds true in the main, bizarrely, these days a few bank accounts offer super‐high interest rates to draw you in. The highest is Naonwide's FlexDirect (www.naonwide.co.uk/flexdirect) at 5% AER, but you only get this rate for a year, and only on balances up to £2,500. The stand-out deal's Santander 123's (www.santander.com) 3% AER on all savings if you've £3k£20k. It has a £2/month fee, but pays up to 3% cashback on bills. Weigh up if you'll earn more than the fee before switching. With both, you need to properly switch to them. Full info, pros and cons at mse.me/bankaccounts Is an Isa nicer? Up to 1.75% AER tax-free A cash Isa's just a savings account where the taxman doesn't

6

remove 20% or 40% of your interest. You can put £5,760 in each tax year, and it remains tax-free year aer year unl you withdraw it. It's a no-brainer. Don't think you're locking the cash away - the top easy access deal is from postoffice.co.uk at 1.8% AER on £100+, with two penalty‐free withdrawals allowed each tax year. This allows you to transfer old Isas into it as well to boost their rates. The rate includes a bonus for 18 months, so it'll almost certainly plummet aer. Make a note in your diary to ditch and transfer. Full best buys and Isa FAQs at www.mse.me/isas. Lock in for up to 2.57% AER If you’re prepared to lock cash away without access, you can earn more in a fix.  Yet it's worth nong many pundits predict UK rates will rise in 2015. So today's best rates may not look so good if you lock in for too long. These are the current top fixed deals for both normal savings and cash Isas. They change daily – latest rates are at mse.me/fixedsavings One‐year fixed savings: United Bank 1.9% (www.ubluk.com). One‐year cash Isa fix: Britannia 1.85% (britannia.co.uk) Two‐year fixed savings: United Bank 2.28% (www.ubluk.com). Two‐year cash Isa fix: Post Office 2.25% (www.postoffice.co.uk) Three‐year fixed savings: Bank of Cyprus 2.57% (www.bankofcyprus.co.uk). Three‐year cash Isa fix: Virgin Money 2.4% (virginmoney.com) Check your local credit union too Credit unions are local savings and loans co-ops. Some have deals that beat the market's best buys, such as 3% savings, 2.15% AER one-year fixes and 2.5% easy‐access cash Isas. They're very localised, so whether you can get these deals depends on where you live or work. Locate ones near you at www.findyourcreditunion.co.uk. 1.5% AER standard easy access savings If you’ve any le, the final opon's a normal easy access savings account. The top payers are www.tescobank.com and www.icicibank.co.uk at 1.5% AER, although Tesco's account includes a bonus rate for the first year, so it's likely to plummet aerwards. If you’ve big cash, as you’re only protected up to £85,000 per instuon, split the cash into different instuons. If you're prepared to up the risk a lile, it's worth looking at peer-to-peer savings, which can pay up to 6%. Here your money's lent to someone who wants to borrow it, via online financial matchmakers such as zopa.com, fundingcircle.com and rateseer.com. This can be lucrave, but it has its risks, though the sites try to migate them. For full info, read mse.me/peertopeer.

Benefits of Neutering Your Pets There are many benefits to having your pet neutered. In female pets (cats / dogs / rabbits) neutering involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus. In male pets, castration involves the surgical removal of the testicles. The most obvious benefit to these procedures is the prevention of unwanted pregnancy in your pet but there are many other benefits. In female cats and dogs the risk of them developing a uterine infection is eliminated and the chances of mammary tumours are reduced. In male cats and dogs castration can reduce undesirable behaviour such as scent marking, aggressive / dominating behaviour and roaming. It can also reduces the chances of prostate and testicular cancers. If you need more advice on neutering your cat or dog please contact us. We also neuter rabbits and ferrets. We are currently offering 25% off neutering, which includes a free pre neuter check and collection / return of your pet to the Matlock surgery. If you want further information please contact us on 01629 581234.

Relive your classic memories by transferring your video to DVD Do you have any forgotten videos, camcorder reels or 8 mm film hidden away in your dusty old loft? These are a record of the great time you’ve had in your life, so don’t lose them! They may be of a family wedding a childhood holiday, or of a loved one that is no longer around. Now you can keep your memories from fading by bringing them back to life by converting your old film to DVD. Matlock Design and Print is situated in the Ritz building at the bottom of Steep Turnpike, they opened in July 2011; since then they have been providing all your print needs such as business cards, banners, posters and all sorts of other printed materials. Steve Argent, who owns Matlock Design and Print, has added another service to repertoire; converting your old videos and 8 mm film to a digital format. Steve’s background has always included printing in one form or another; having worked in Journalism and Public Relations most of his life. So having gained this valuable experience in the print world it was the natural conclusion to open up his own printing business when he was made redundant. However, as with any business, diversification is one of the keys to success. After doing his own extensive research Steve purchased his own in-house Film Transfer Unit that was superior to many others in transferring film to digital format. Not only for the picture quality, but he found it was the safest method for someone’s treasured film, as well as being economical so he could pass these savings onto his customers.

gently; as it goes through the process it captures photograph of every single frame of film, so you get a lovely crisp image every time. Steve says that “When some of our customers see these old films the reaction is absolutely unbelievable. They may be seeing themselves as a five year old at their own birthday party or seeing their parents that had passed away years ago; it’s really very emotional.” So if you have any old VHS, Betamax, video, camcorder cassettes, 8 mm or Super 8 reels hidden away in the loft or garage then please bring them down and get them converted. If you don’t act soon then they are likely to deteriorate. Video starts to deteriorate after about 10 years, 8 mm and Super 8 mm is around 40 years, depending on how it’s stored. Matlock Design and Print wants to be the company that you trust with your precious memories. You can be assured that: • Professional equipment is use • Nothing gets outsourced • Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back! Getting your films transferred is very affordable; rates start at £10 for a small reel or tape and £20 for a large reel. For more information call Steve on 01629 760538 or email matlockprint@hotmail.co.uk

COMPUTER TIP Stand Away from the Computer! Most computers run windows and that means they sometimes mess up your data. The most common cause is sudden loss of power and the machine just ‘dies’, corrupting the data storage. Usually the data can be recovered and the earlier it is done, the better chance of success – but first you have to take a backup of your data! And that means mounting the disk drive in another computer. DON’T let the faulty computer start up. DON’T let Windows try ‘fixing’ it for you until your data is safe. If you’re unsure of how to do any of this, turn off your machine and stand away from the computer, then call for help!

Taking Health & Wellbeing into the Community Anyone that knows Janine Bailey from Tansley, knows that she loves a challenge. It was after her last job working up at Darwin Forest that she found her vacation in life; helping people feel better about themselves, this was the catalyst that prompted her to become a Health Trainer. The role of ' Health Trainer' was first outlined in the 2004 White paper ‘Choosing Health’. Health Trainers help people develop healthier behaviour and life style in their local communities. Their remit is to reach those disadvantaged groups that don’t get the support they need to help them make the changes to their lifestyle that they want to make. During Janine's course she impressed her tutors with her innovative ideas on how to get the ‘better health’ message out to her local community and her ‘Exercise Roadshow’ was born. Since the launch of The Exercise Roadshow, Janine has introduced classes in Laughter Yoga, (which includes self-induced laughter,

relaxation techniques & yogic breathing). Bokwa, Walking for Health, taster classes in Zumba, Chair based exercise such as Yoga and soon to be introduced Just Jhoom, dance classes inspired by Bollywood, a great way to keep fit. natural HEALTH Aches and Pains By Ken Teppin (M.C.P.H)

As I sit here to start wring, I am aware of my sff neck from the  spring digging in the allotment.

pain, that is typically worse at night or lying down and if the pain is less during the dayme.

The usual aching knees that I get at the end of each day are brought on from years of football, long distance running and old age. Together with my slipped disc, you must see that I am well qualified to  talk about aches and pains. However, I sll manage to have a very acve life. In fact I tell my wife that I am a walking miracle!

It can be that more than one remedy is indicated so it is fine to alternate them. Take up to 4 doses a day (dissolved under the tongue) unl the pain subsides. Finally if the problem seems to have started aer a bump or fall take a few doses of Arnica 30 and then assess the situaon.

Homeopathy can be of great benefit for aches and pains regardless of their cause. The key when deciding which remedy to use is their modalies: these three remedies have their own ‘keynotes’ which you have to match up with the type of pain that you are experiencing. Bryonia 30 is helpful when pain increases with even the slightest movement, with stching pain and worsens with change in weather. Rhus Tox 30 is indicated when the pain is beer for movement, pressure or heat applicaon, but is worse for sing sll. Ruta Grav 30 seems to act on a deeper 22

All of these natural supplements are highly effecve both for the inial pain relief and repairing damaged ssue and joints. Finally, I would like to recommend a couple of manipulave techniques that I have found very helpful. The Alexander Technique is a gentle system that reprograms your movement through classes that teach you to move in a much more natural way. The treatment that I use on a regular basis now is Bowen Technique. This is a gentle muscle manipulaon that releases pain and re-aligns the body .

Parkside Fitness, ‘Challenge Matlock’ To Get Fitter & Healthier

Parkside Fitness in Matlock has teamed up with VI UK to Challenge Matlock to get fitter and healthier and by doing so give free meals to their local community. Challenge Matlock is a new initiative which has been launched alongside the Project 10 Challenge, encouraging people to reach their ideal weight goal by losing fat or building muscle, 10lbs at a time. Project 10 gives people on the challenge an opportunity to share the benefits of achieving a healthier weight with the next generation and at a local level. Each time someone achieves their 10lb goal, 30 meals are donated to a charity in the local area supporting undernourished or obese children. As the newest gym in town Parkside Fitness want to make a lasting legacy for their members and community and Challenge Matlock enables them to do just that. Choosing their neighbouring food bank Jigsaw to donate the meals to, Parkside has set a target to donate over 1000 meals to them between now

and Christmas. But they can only do that with the help of their gym members and the wider community who want to accept the challenge to transform their bodies and lives with Project 10. Dean Pratt, joint owner with Paula Marshal of Parkside Fitness said, “Engaging the local community in this project is really exciting for us. We know the Challenge works and we believe it is a fantastic way for our members to benefit personally whilst also supporting the overall health of the children in our local community.” The 90 Day Challenge focuses on building a community to help everyone achieve a healthier weight, whether made up of friends, family or amongst a member group such as those at Parkside Fitness. ‘’Kip’s Tips’’ for helping your child enjoy their reading As a parent or grandparent you will want to help your child’s reading development because it is the key skill they will need for everything else they do in life. The reading scheme from school could be where you draw the books from, or from the home bookshelves or for more fun, why not go to the library? Whatever you do make sure it is a fun and enjoyable time for you both and doesn’t become a ‘you have to do your reading homework ‘. Schedule the reading for when the child isn’t tired and sleepy just before their bedtime.

Top tips from Kip 1.

Make their reading time special. Keep it quiet and calm and ensure your child has 1-2-1 time with you for reading. Snuggling up with a good book is not just for grown-ups!

2.

Let them choose their own book. It might be the same one night after night but that gives them security and anticipation as they ‘know what is coming’. Familiarity breeds confidence in this case and patience in you!!

3.

Point to each word as you read together so that they ‘see’ the word and ‘hear’ the word at the same time as they ‘say’ the word. After a time ask them to try and read a word, or let them finish the sentence on each page.

4.

Cover up parts of words for new or longer words to breakdown into basic sounds and encourage your child to ‘have a go’ at sounding out new words. Don’t be afraid to help out by filling the gaps created by unknown words. It’s important to keep the flow going so the meaning of the story isn’t lost and your child doesn’t become frustrated and demotivated.

5.

Reward progress however small with a hug, a ‘well done’ or telling someone else how well the child has read. The key is to keep reading a positive experience and use lots of praise!

6.

When they are new to reading, talk about the pictures as you read and encourage predictions about what will happen next. After reading the book a few times the child will know the story and enjoy telling you what happens. At this stage you can start to point to words and say “This is word is ‘blue’ can you find another ‘blue’ on this page?”

7.

Other activities could include sticking flashcards around the house, so putting ‘window’ on a window and ‘table’ on a table. You can also play ‘Slap’ using flashcards too, but I suggest you remove fragile valuables first!

8.

Remember a little every day is the best way of learning to read and keeping it fun!

AQUABOX - Give The Gift Of Life Without clean safe water, an adult will probably die of thirst or disease in 3-4 days, and a child probably much sooner. According to the World Health Organization, 4.3 million people die every year from drinking contaminated water, mostly in underdeveloped countries where people drink water that has not been treated.

Aquabox have many supporters all over the UK, who fund raise for them, although as you can imagine they could always do with more fund raising supporters. The donations come from many different sources such as schools, churches, clubs and many other organisations. They’ve even had a donation recently from the USA, who were impressed by the work that they are doing.

To help combat this problem, the concept of Aquabox was developed by the Wirksworth Rotary Club in 1991, and has grown since then into a far reaching organisation. Aquabox operate from a warehouse at the top of Cromford Hill, near Wirksworth; and is run by a team of volunteers that’s funded entirely by their generous supporters.

Nearly everything that is packed into the boxes is bought in bulk, so they ensure they get the best possible price. There are also essential items that are kindly donated by the general public that can’t be bought in bulk or they are too expensive to buy, such as

Aquabox provide safe water for those in desperate need in disaster areas around the world .They do this by using innovative AquaFilter technology, that produces safe and clean drinking water instantly and reliably without the need for chemicals. The key to the filter is a membrane works on the same principle that’s used in dialysis machines; the filter has a membrane which the water is pumped through. Throughout the membranes there are minute holes that are 0.2 um; these holes are too small for the larger disease carrying bugs to pass through so making the water safe to drink. The pump is capable of pumping 1 litre of water per minute; and even after rigorous testing the pump continues to produce clean drinking water after 18,000 litres!

children’s knitted hats, clothes and toys that are suitable for children up to the age of 6 years. Aquabox also need your donations of good condition children's clothes, they need to be practical (not designer please) such as cotton t shirts, shorts and dresses, plus good condition duvet covers, sheets and towels.

Before the filters are sent to the disaster zones or areas of conflict, the volunteers fill a box along side them with all the essential items that you would need in an emergency, so assuming that you had lost everything, the boxes will have everything you would need to get started again. These items include equipment to help you build a shelter, cook a meal, keep warm, and meet your basic hygiene needs.

If you do have any donations at all, or you would like to raise funds to support Aquabox please contact 01629 825178 or visit their website www.aquabox.org. You can also donate online directly using this link www.aquabox.org/donations.asp

Amazingly 70 volunteers a week give up their free time to come to Wirksworth to help pack these boxes; and approximately 3000 boxes go out every year, with each one costing £120, so it’s vital that funds continue to be raised to keep this essential service going.

If you have a problem dropping off your donations The Dales Directory editor Sharon ( who lives in Matlock) would be pleased to collect and deliver them for you, please speak to Sharon Shirley on 01629 57638 to arrange, many thanks.
