Both vessels under Power

Head on

Both vessels under Sail Head on

WIND

Both vessels alter course to starboard and pass port-to-port.

Crossing

Vessel with the other on her starboard side gives way by altering course to starboard.

Overtaking

Overtaking vessel must keep clear.

Vessel on port tack gives way by altering course to starboard.

Vessels on different tack

WIND

Vessel on port tack gives way by altering course to starboard.

Vessels on same tack

WIND

Vessel to windward of the other gives way.

Blue vessel = giveway vessel, yellow vessel = stand-on vessel – the stand-on vessel maintains course and speed. Both vessels have a responsibility to avoid collisions – if the giveway vessel does not take action it is the stand-on vessel’s responsibility to take action. Sail vessels under power (or power and sail) must display a cone and act as a power vessel.

Who gives way to who?

Give way to any vessel higher up this list than you: a vessel which you are overtaking a vessel not under command (displaying two balls) a vessel restricted in ability to manouevre (displaying a diamond between two balls) a vessel constrained by its draught (displaying a vertical cylinder) a vessel engaged in fishing (displaying two cones pointing to each other) a vessel under sail only a power-driven vessel or a sail vessel under power
