The Dakota Bowl is a special gridiron tradition in Sioux Falls. We enjoy time-honored rivalries in our city, but just as important is the chance for us to come together for food, fellowship, and football and reflect on what a great community we live in.

XLI BoB Burns Dakota BowL Welcome to the 41st annual Bob Burns Dakota Bowl! This long standing fall classic continues to be successful because of the many people who work tirelessly each year to put together an evening of football and fun that is the proud tradition of the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl.

The Bob Burns Dakota Bowl Committee and the staff and administration of O’Gorman High School would like to thank the many volunteers and the generosity of the Sioux Falls business community for their continued support of this annual event.

Over the past forty-one years, the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl has grown into much more than a football Independent Sioux Falls of elementary students attending mini-camps for game. Today’s events began thisInsurance morningAgents withofhundreds Proudly Serving Our Community! both football players and cheerleaders. These camps were led by the O’Gorman Knights football team and cheerleaders who took time out of a busy day to share their talents with future Knights. Mass was celebrated in the Lorang Theatre this afternoon followed by tailgating at the stadium. All of this excitement leads Independent Insurance Agents of Sioux Falls up to an evening of fireworks, skydivers, the Marching Knights and most Proudly Serving Ourimportantly, Community! a football game!

Tonight’s game promises to be an exciting rematch of last year’s state semi-final game as the Knights take on the Brandon Valley Lynx. We welcome the Brandon Valley team and fans to Dakota Bowl XLI! BISHOP O’GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS Administration PRESIDENT - Kyle Groos

PRINCIPAL - Joan Mahoney

Kyle Groos, a Colman native, is president of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Groos received both his bachelors and masters degrees from SDSU. He went on to get his educational administration degree from Drake University and completed his education specialist degree through the University of South Dakota. After teaching and coaching at both Groton High School and SDSU, Groos moved to West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic High School where he taught and coached for two years. Before coming to Sioux Falls, he also served as assistant principal, dean of students, and football coach at Bishop Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City. He spent fourteen years as principal of O’Gorman High School. He and his wife Theresa have a son, Hayden, and daughters, Ainsley, Brinley, and Ridley.

Joan Mahoney continues as O’Gorman’s High School principal this year. Mahoney received her bachelors degree from South Dakota State University and went on to receive her masters degree in educational administration from the University of South Dakota. She joined the O’Gorman staff in the fall of 1990 as an English teacher before moving to the assistant principal job in 2004. She has also served as the Curriculum and Assessment Coordinator for the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. Mahoney and her husband John have three children who are all graduates of O’Gorman High School: Jackie (2001), Joe (2003), and Josh (2005).

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - Alex Anderson Alex Anderson

Kelly Jones Kelly Jones earned her bachelor of science degree in community psychology from St. Cloud State University in 2001 and completed her master of arts in school counseling in 2004 from The University of South Dakota. She started her career as a school counselor at Bridgewater-Emery School District then moved to Roosevelt High School before coming to O’Gorman High School in 2014. Her husband Vince, OG class of ’97, is this year’s Dakota Bowl Chair.

Alex Anderson is the assistant principal at O’Gorman High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Sioux Falls before going on to complete his masters degree in educational administration from South Dakota State University. He joined the O’Gorman staff in 2011 as the Academic Services Coordinator. Anderson, a native of Sioux Falls and graduate of Roosevelt High School, also serves as an assistant football coach for the Knights. His wife Paige is an elementary school counselor at Holy Spirit and St. Lambert Schools. The Anderson’s have a son, Owen.

ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR - Steve Kueter

Steve Kueter continues as the Activities Director for the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Kueter spent 38 years with the OG football program as an assistant coach, defensive coordinator and head coach. He led the Knights to seven state championships including 1985,1986, 1988, 1991, 1993, 2004, and 2005. The Knights were runners-up in the state title match in 1982, 1984, 1990, 1999, 2006, 2010, and 2015. Kueter broke the state record for wins and ended his career with a 289-92-1 win-loss record. A Humboldt, SD native, Kueter graduated from Dakota State College. He and his wife, Gloriann, have three children: Sam, Max, and Megan.

Susanne Gale, a Sioux Falls native and OG graduate, continues as Director of Development this year. Gale received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota majoring in criminal justice and psychology. She and her husband Patrick have two children: Alivia and Brooklyn.

CHAPLAIN - Fr. Joe Scholten Fr. Joseph Scholten attended O’Gorman and was active in oral interp, theatre, and choir.

After graduating in 2009, he entered St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. After completing his undergraduate degree in philosophy, classical languages and Catholic Studies, he attended major seminary at the Pontifical North American College in Rome where he studied theology and early Christian history.

In the summer of 2017 he was ordained a priest along with fellow high school classmates Fr. Tyler Mattson (Holy Spirit Associate) and Fr. Andy Thuringer (Aberdeen). He is currently serving as the associate pastor at the Cathedral of St. Joseph and chaplain at O’Gorman High School.

o’GorMan CaMPus sEEs uPGraDEs This summer brought big changes to the physical landscape of the O’Gorman Campus. In May, work began on a major drainage project designed to allow for erosion control throughout the practice fields. Previously, runoff from the entire campus flowed through the practice field areas down to the Sioux River. The cumulative effect of this water flow created deep trenches running north and south splitting the practice and main field areas and causing safety concerns. The project, spearheaded by Soukup Construction, involved inserting pipework underground from the parking lot south of the band room all the way to the Sioux River. This proj-

ect will protect the campus grounds from future erosion and damage to the green areas.

After completion of the drainage project, work began on updates to McEneaney Field and the lower practice field area. A renewal of the Avera partnership provided the necessary funding for the upgrades. The aging Field Turf on McEneaney Field was replaced with Astroturf, while the grass practice field is also being converted into a turf field. These two fields are utilized by 1,000 students each year with football, band, soccer, track & field, cross country, physical education classes, and acceleration programs competing for space. The

upgrades will establish world class outdoor facilities for students for the next decade and beyond.

Inside the high school, the main gym has also undergone a total refinish due to damage caused by flooding that occurred last year just before the start of the school year. The new stained floor design provides a more contemporary look replacing the old painted version. These upgrades to the gym floor as well as work on the hallway outside of the gym and several of the graduation composites finally completes the restoration work necessary after a roof leak caused extensive damage to that area of the building.

VARSITY FOOTBALL Coaches HEAD COACH - Jayson Poppinga

ASSISTANT COACH - Shannon Poppinga Shannon Poppinga is the defensive coordinator for the Knights. A Harrisburg native, Shannon brings extensive experience playing football at both the collegiate and professional levels. His number was retired by the Sioux Falls Storm. He also played in the Division II All-Star game and was awarded All-American accolades.

Poppinga was inducted into the Augustana University Hall of Fame this year. Shannon was defensive coordinator for the Pierre Governors before coming to Sioux Falls. An Augustana College graduate, Poppinga teaches Social Studies at OG.

Jayson Poppinga enters his fourth year as head coach of the O’Gorman Knights. Before joining the Knights, Poppinga spent 15 years coaching in several states. He coached the Pierre Governors to a state championship in 2013 and a runner-up finish in 2015. The Governors were 23-10 under Poppinga. Poppinga, a graduate of Harrisburg High School, the University of Sioux Falls (BS), and North Dakota State University (MS), coached in Kansas City and North Dakota before returning to South Dakota in 2011. He and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters: Jori and Natalie and son Finn.

ASSISTANT COACH - Austin Wagner Austin Wagner returns to the O’Gorman football coaching staff this year as a varsity assistant. Originally from Pierre, Austin played under Jayson and Shannon Poppinga during their tenure as Governor coaches.

Austin graduated from Pierre in 2013 and attended the University of South Dakota, where he majored in finance and minored in economics. He currently works as a financial research analyst & advisor at Elgethun Capital Management in Sioux Falls.

ASSISTANT COACH - Vinnie Olson Vinnie Olson, son of Vincent and Betty Olson, will be coaching the offensive line and defensive line for the Knights this fall. A Pierre native, Olson attended the University of South Dakota and the University of Sioux Falls where he competed in football, wrestling, and track. He achieved college All-American honors multiple times for both football and track, and he was the National College Shot Put Champion in 2004.

Vinnie was also named Male Athlete of the Year at USF in 2004-05. He has played professional football in both the Arena and Indoor Football leagues for the past ten years while volunteer coaching for both football and track.

Alex Gray is a Pierre native who was the Joe Robbie MVP and Gatorade Player of the Year finalist in 2013 for the Pierre Governors under the Poppingas. Alex graduated from Northern State University with a business management and marketing degree where he started as a safety and played four years of football for the Wolves. He currently is employed by Pepsi Beverage Company. Alex enjoys hunting, fishing, and sports.

Layne Hohn is a graduate of Pierre High School and played on the 2013 State Championship and 2015 Runner up teams with the Poppingas. He was a two time all-state and all-conference selection. Layne is currently attending Augustana University with a pre-med major and plans to attend medical school in the fall of 2020.

Rick Lynch begins his 36th year as a math teacher and freshman football coach at O’Gorman HS. A 1979 OGHS graduate and 1983 Augustana College graduate, Rick played in the Bicentennial Bowl and the first Dakota Bowl. He is an assistant track coach, junior high basketball coach. Pictured with Rick are his wife Amy and their children, Maggie and Joe. Not pictured are Amy’s children Andy, Laura, and Alex Hey.

Joe Kunzman is a freshman football coach and powerlifting referee. He is employed by United Fire Group as a Senior Claims Representative. He and his wife Bobbie have twin boys Jarad and Jory, 2010 O’Gorman graduates.

Kent Kolsrud coaches the girls basketball team. He received his undergraduate degree from Dakota State University in 1991 and his masters degree in physical education from SDSU in 1993. Kent also coaches freshman football and teaches physical education classes at O’Gorman. He and his wife Paula have two daughters, Kylie and Kennedi.

FOR THE 2019 SEASON

Head Coach Jayson Poppinga is excited for the upcoming season after a 2018 season that saw numerous records broken including number of touchdown receptions in a game, touchdown passes in a game, and almost every receiving record in the book including the all-time South Dakota career receiving record for all 11-man classes by the SD Gatorade Player of the Year, Canyon Bauer.

Poppinga believes the strength of this year’s team will be their experience. This year’s squad has thirty-two returning letterman with five starters returning on offense and four on defense. The 2019 team will have a very large senior class with twentysix members and will depend on the experience learned from underclassmen who posted an undefeated junior varsity record.

Highlights of the 2019 campaign will be the rematch with top ranked Brandon Valley in the Dakota Bowl and the Presidents Bowl with Roosevelt. Both of these city rivalries early in the season should be key indicators of the ability of this year’s team.

The 2019 Knights will feature a host of new faces on the defensive line and the defensive secondary, with losses to graduation of both defensive ends and the corners. On offense the biggest hole will be replacing Canyon Bauer at the wide-receiver position.

“We feel the effort put in during the off season by the entire team will pay dividends early on in the season.” ~ Coach Poppinga Poppinga says, “The experience gained last year along with this team’s chemistry should put O’Gorman back in contention for another Metro Title and a chance to bring home a state championship in 2019.”

Last year saw the Knights maintaining the tradition of excellence as they once again reached the semi-final game and ended up as one of the top four schools in AAA. Sioux Falls continued to dominate the AAA division with all four of the semi-final teams coming from the Metro Conference, and a state championship game that featured yet

another All-Metro final.

The Knights open their season on the road on August 30 at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City taking on the Rapid City Stevens Raiders. They then meet Brandon Valley in the 41st Annual Dakota Bowl on September 7. The next week brings Roosevelt in the President’s Bowl followed by another Metro Conference match-up with Lincoln at McEneaney Field on Sept. 20 for Homecoming. Rapid City Central comes to McEneaney Field the following week followed by a matchup with Washington at Howard Wood Field on Friday, October 4. The season rounds out with Watertown, Aberdeen and Harrisburg.

The Knights won state championships in 2004 and 2005, and lost to Sioux Falls Roosevelt in O’Gorman’s bid for a three-peat in 2006. The past twelve years have brought more success, including eleven semi-final playoff appearances, and a trip to the Dome in 2010 and again in 2015. The Knights look to be strong in 2019 and continue the tradition of excellence that is O’Gorman Football.

The Knights fought their way to an impressive 8-0 record during the regular season in 2018 sweeping the Sioux Falls schools. Eventually the Knights would fall to Brandon Valley at Brandon in the final game of the regular season.

In the opening round of the playoffs, the Knights defeated Lincoln for the second time to win the right to play Brandon Valley again in the state semi-final game. For the second year in a row, the Knights fell in the semi-final game to the team that would go on to win the state championship.

The Knights scored early and often in the opening playoff game against Lincoln on their way to a lopsided 76-14 win. Canyon Bauer, Tate Wishard, Teegan Schmlimgen, and Beau Blount tallied two touchdowns each and Conor Pavelko was successful on nine point-after attempts to lead the scoring for the Knights who were never threatened in this game. The win set up a semi-final rematch with secondranked Brandon Valley. The Lynx defeated the Knights 2915 and went on to claim the AAA championship.

O’GORMAN 42 – WASHINGTON 33 (DAKOTA BOWL)

The Knight started the 2018 strong with a 58-14 victory against the Aberdeen Golden Eagles. After a slow start that found the Knights trailing 14-7, the Knights launched a 77-yard-drive ending with a 20yard touchdown pass from Teegan Schlimgen to tie the game. Canyon Bauer scored on the next possession on another pass from Schlimgen to put the Knights up 21-14 early in the second quarter.

Zach Norton, Schlimgen, and Sam Stukel all took snaps at quarterback in this season opener. Bauer ended with three touch downs for the night, Tate Wishard added two, and Logan Jones, Stukel, and Schlimgen each found the endzone once. Conor Pavelko was 7 of 8 on point-after attempts and added a field goal to finish with 10 points. The Knights finished with 516 total yards of offense while holding Aberdeen to just 141 yards. wEEk 2: sEPtEMBEr 1

O’GORMAN 32 – HARRISBURG 15 The second game of the season saw the Poppinga brothers returning to their hometown as the visiting team for Harrisburg’s Tiger Bowl.

Despite four turnovers, the Knights’ defense led by Noah Reeves, Evan Wittry, and John Suing managed to keep the Tigers in check while the offense found its stride. Zach Norton opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and then found Canyon Bauer for a touchdown in the second. Norton led all scoring with two more rushing touchdowns in the second half. Conor Pavelko had three points after and a field goal to round out the scoring. Harrisburg pulled within nine with just under ten minutes to go in the game, but the two-point conversion attempt failed.

Dakota Bowl saw No. 2 O’Gorman taking on No. 3 Washington in a rematch of last year’s semi-final game. The Knights scored on their first play from scrimmage with Zach Norton finding Canyon Bauer with a 73-yard touchdown pass. The Warriors turned the ball over on the kickoff allowing the Knights to score their second touchdown less than a minute into the game. After stopping Washington on the next drive, OG took the ball 69-yards with Bauer scoring. Norton found Evan Wittry just before half to push the lead to 28-7 at the half. The Warriors mounted a comeback in the second half scoring on an interception to pull within two points.

The two-point-conversion attempt failed, and the Knights drove the field for a final score making it 4233 with under five minutes to play.

Norton completed 18 of 27 passes for 294-yards with three touchdowns. Bauer led the Knights scoring with 9 catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Kowalczyk led the defensive effort with 10 tackles and assists. wEEk 4: sEPtEMBEr 14

O’GORMAN 39 – LINCOLN 7 The Knights defeated cross-town rival Lincoln at Howard Wood Field to move to 4-0 on the season.

Zach Norton rushed for 170 yards and threw for another 142 and one touchdown, while Tate Wishard rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns in the win. In a balanced defensive effort, the Knights held the Patriots scoreless in the first half. OG took a 22-0 lead into the locker room after Conor Pavelko scored a 33-yard field goal as time expired. While Lincoln managed to score early in the third quarter, the Knights answered with another Pavelko field goal to push the lead to 25-7 at the end of the

The second-ranked Knights took on the Rapid City Cobblers at McEneaney Field in this homecoming match-up. Tate Wishard scored three touchdowns and Canyon Bauer two in a game that never saw the Knights threatened. Teegan Schlimgen was 12-18 and 160 yards and one touchdown and Zach Norton was 6-9 and 86 yards in a game in which nearly every Knight saw action. OG accumulated 359 total yards of offense in the game (246 pass-

This Metro Conference matchup featured No. 2 O’Gorman facing the undefeated No. 1 Roosevelt Rough Riders. The Knights capitalized on Roosevelt’s six turnovers to turn what was expected to be a tight game into somewhat of a rout. In the first quarter the Knights put three points on the board with a Conor Pavelko field goal after a Rider turnover. Another turnover in the second quarter led to a touchdown pass from Zach Norton to Tate Wishard. Norton added another touchdown in the

O’GORMAN 41 – HURON 9 Back home at McEneaney Field taking on the Huron Tigers, the Knights passed and rushed their way to 452 yards of total offense in a game where they were never threatened. The Knights scored first on a Zach Norton to Canyon Bauer touchdown in the first quarter. The Tigers threatened on their next possession early in the second quarter, but Jacob Byrd intercepted a pass at the Knights’ seven yard line to stop the drive.

After giving up a safety on the next possession, the Knights drove 66 yards in six plays with Bauer scoring on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Norton making the score 14-2. Norton completed 22 of 32 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns.

Andrew Pujado scored twice and Tate Wishard added a touchdown to Bauer’s three; Conor Pavelko was 5 for 6 on extra point attempts to round out the scoring for the Knights. wEEk 8: oCtoBEr 12

O’GORMAN 62 – RAPID CITY STEVENS 7 O’Gorman traveled to Rapid City to take on the Stevens Raiders in this late season match-up at O’Harra Stadium. The Knights scored early and often taking the opening kickoff 78-yards in four plays to score on a 12-yard pass from Zach Norton to Canyon Bauer. Norton went 12-for16 in the opening half with three touchdown passes leading to a 42-7 halftime lead. Norton and Bauer connected on four different

O’GORMAN 15 – BRANDON VALLEY 29 The semi-final game at McEneaney Field saw the Knights seeking to avenge their earlier regular season loss to the Brandon Valley Lynx. Brandon opened the scoring returning an interception for a touchdown early in the game.

Brandon went on to lead 22-0 at the half. Though outgaining the Lynx offensively 330-298, three second-half turnovers and costly penalties stalled any hopes the Knights had of a comeback. Zach Norton was 18 of 36 while rushing for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Jacob Byrd and Canyon Bauer were the other offensive leaders for the Knights in the losing effort.

Brandon Valley went on to win the state championship the following week defeating Washington.

The undefeated and #1 ranked Knights traveled to Brandon to take on the #3 Lynx in the season finale. Early mistakes cost OG with Brandon intercepting the Knights on the first play from scrimmage and returning that ball to score going up 7-0. A fumble on the kickoff after the score led to another Brandon Valley touchdown. The Knights could not find their rhythm throughout the game and ended up falling to the Lynx 40-15. Tate Wishard and Zach Norton scored for the Knights in the losing effort.

O’GORMAN 76 – LINCOLN 14 The Knights (9-1) came out strong in this quarterfinal playoff game and poured it on throughout the game to score a record breaking 76 points in a game that was never close. Zach Norton was 10 for 17 throwing for 272 yards and five touchdowns, while the Knights amassed over 500 yards of total offense. Canyon Bauer and Beau Blount each scored twice in the first quarter setting up a 27-0 lead for OG. Tate Wishard tallied two touchdowns and Andrew Pujado one in the lopsided battle. Teegan Schlimgen threw for 105 yards and three touchdowns connecting with Beau Beavers in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring. This win set up a rematch with the Brandon Valley Lynx in the semi-final game.

Highlights of 40 Years...DAKOTA BOWL GAMES DAKOTA BOWL I O’Gorman 35 Fargo-Shanley 12 For the first ever Dakota Bowl game, Head Coach Bob Burns chose a team from neighboring North Dakota that had won 32 games straight and 15 state football titles. But it was soon clear that this Dakota Bowl idea was going to be special for the Knights. They scored on three of their first four possessions enroute to winning 35-12. Knight fullback Steve Lukens scored three touchdowns. Jamie Kiley carried the ball 13 times, gaining 81 yards and scoring one touchdown. Quarterback Dave Viger completed 7 of 8 passes for 93 yards as a crowd of 7,113 looked on.

DAKOTA BOWL II O’Gorman 6 Washington 13 In one of the more controversial Dakota Bowl contests, Washington scored on its first and second possessions and held on to win. The first score came out of what O’Gorman coaches thought was an illegal formation. No flag was thrown, however and the touchdown stood. O’Gorman’s only score came after Dave Flicek knocked down a Warrior punt. John Weisensee picked up the ball and ran it to the Washington 25. Tim Rooney passed to Doug Brown for the touchdown two plays later.

DAKOTA BOWL III O’Gorman 10 Lincoln 14 Pat Weisensee did all of the Knights’ scoring, kicking a field goal and running for a touchdown as O’Gorman lost its second straight Dakota Bowl contest. Weisensee ended the night with 142 yards on 24 carries. Two other O’Gorman drives ended without scores inside the Patriots’ 15-yard line. The Knights went on to win the Class 11 AA state championship later that year.

DAKOTA BOWL IV O’Gorman 12 Washington 13 (OT) In this overtime game, Washington stopped Knight quarterback Scott Jones short of the goal-line on a two-point conversion to seal the win. A crowd of 7,684 watched the low-scoring contest. Fullback Tim Lorang scored the Knight’s only touchdown in regulation. In the overtime, Jones hit wide receiver Jeff Spriggs for a touchdown to pull within one of Washington, but the Knights failed on the two-point attempt.

DAKOTA BOWL V O’Gorman 14 Lincoln 13 Steve Kueter’s first Dakota Bowl as head coach proved to be one of the most memorable as the Knights’ Jeff Meinen stopped the Patriots’ fake extra-point attempt at the one-yard line for the win. Tim Jurgens led the charge, scoring both of O’Gorman’s touchdowns. But Meinen’s hit on Lincoln’s Jon Peterson at the one-yard line preserved the victory with less than 5 minutes to play in the game.

DAKOTA BOWL VI O’Gorman 7 Washington 6 For the third straight year, the Dakota Bowl game was decided by one point as the Knights prevailed over Washington. Tim Jurgens scored on the first play on the fourth quarter, then kicked the extra point to give O’Gorman the advantage. A crowd of 8,021 watched the game which was scoreless at halftime. Jon Harris scored Washington’s touchdown in the third period.

DAKOTA BOWL VII O’Gorman 14 Lincoln 0 The Knights’ defense smothered the Patriots enroute to a 14-0 O’Gorman victory. Gene Elrod and Tom Schnetter scored for the Knights. Troy Soldatke and Todd Lamberty led the defense. The Knights went on to win the state Class AA football crown later that year.

DAKOTA BOWL VIII O’Gorman 21 Washington 0 The Knights completed their second straight Dakota Bowl shutout by topping Washington before a crowd of 9,081 at Howard Wood Field. Steve Mislinski, who finished with 124 rushing yards on 26 attempts, scored the first O’Gorman touchdown.

Quarterback Jon Olson scored the second and Jim Dougherty added a third touchdown on a 38-yard run. O’Gorman held the Warriors to just 46 yards of offense in the game. The Knights went on to win their second straight Class AA title.

DAKOTA BOWL XVI O’Gorman 20 Brandon Valley 7 The Knights spoiled Brandon Valley’s first appearance in the Dakota Bowl. Kevin Klempka got into the end zone three times as O’Gorman won another Dakota Bowl contest. Klempka ended the game with 91 yards and quarterback Pat Burke added another 44 yards on the ground. Ed Schumann rushed eight times for 60 yards.

DAKOTA BOWL XVII O’Gorman 16 Lincoln 8 Alex Butterfield took the opening kickoff and rambled 95 yards to launch the Knights into the lead in the Dakota Bowl. But Lincoln played tough and O’Gorman lost three first-half fumbles to keep the game close. Pat Burke scored for the Knights on a 3-yard run after completing a 31-yard pass to Jack Oliver earlier in the drive.

DAKOTA BOWL IX O’Gorman 40 Lincoln 14 Brad Salem led the O’Gorman offense passing for 156 yards and one touchdown as the Knights trounced the Patriots. Ryan Cahalan returned a second-half interception for a touchdown and scored another on a 19-yard catch. Rob Lowe scored the game’s first touchdown. The Knights led 26-6 at halftime.

DAKOTA BOWL XVIII O’Gorman 9 Brandon Valley 19 The Knights’ 13-game winning streak in Dakota Bowls came to an end as the visiting Lynx topped the Knights. O’Gorman set up the Lynx first score on a botched punt giving Brandon Valley possession on the Knights 4 yard line. Casey Hillman scored O’Gorman’s only touchdown on a reverse and Ross Winkels added a field goal. The Knights led 9-6 at halftime.

DAKOTA BOWL X O’Gorman 42 Brookings 6 The Knights rode four first-half touchdowns to victory over Brookings in the Bobcats’ first Dakota Bowl appearance. Chris Sitzmann scored three touchdowns in the game, Jay Hollenback scored another and quarterback Chad McConnell added another. Sitzmann had 126 yards rushing in the game. O’Gorman completed the school’s only undefeated season that year, capping it off with another state title.

DAKOTA BOWL XIX O’Gorman 38 Lincoln 6 The Knights returned to their traditional Dakota Bowl form, beating the Patriots in the 1997 Dakota Bowl contest. Nate Vogel rushed for 174 yards and

Senior quarterback Scott Bickett ran for one touchdown and hit Scott Honner for another to tally O’Gorman’s scoring. Lincoln had taken the lead in the game 6-0.

DAKOTA BOWL XX O’Gorman 31 Washington 38 (OT) A wild game entertained fans at the 20th anniversary game. Washington won in overtime. The Warriors were able to score on their overtime possession. The Knights were moving toward the endzone when a fumble led to a scramble for possession in the endzone. Washington came up with the ball and the victory before a near capacity crowd at Howard Wood Field.

DAKOTA BOWL XXI O’Gorman 20 Roosevelt 14 The Rough Riders started their first appearance in the Dakota Bowl with a touchdown on the first play of the game. But behind quarterback Seth Harrer and running backs Eric Stoll and Ryan Corcoran, the Knights came back from a 7-7 halftime tie to win the game.

DAKOTA BOWL XXII O’Gorman 28 Lincoln 13 O’Gorman rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead and held on to beat the Lincoln Patriots for the 21st consecutive time in Dakota Bowl 22. A crowd of about 9,700 watched Jimmy Nasser score two rushing touchdowns and then throw to Matt Wiederrich for another. The Patriots mounted a late comeback but fell short. Corey Powell also scored on a 12-yard run.

DAKOTA BOWL XIII O’Gorman 35 Lincoln 6 Before a record crowd of 10,954, O’Gorman rolled to its ninth straight Dakota Bowl victory. Josh Lien rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns for the Knights. O’Gorman had 259 yards rushing by halftime. Matt Hart also scored on a 4-yard run. The Knights won the school’s fifth state title later that season.

DAKOTA BOWL XIV O’Gorman 29 Brookings 6 Led by an 85-yd. punt return by Dennis Schoenwald and a 74-yd. interception return for a touchdown by Tony Breck, O’Gorman upped its Dakota Bowl record to 11-3. Josh Pierce scored on a 4-yard run and Jason Green on a one-yard run in the game.

DAKOTA BOWL XV O’Gorman 49 Lincoln 0 The game he founded started bearing his name this year as the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl unfolded before a crowd of 8,843. The Knights blanked the Patriots for their 11th straight Dakota Bowl victory. Jason Green gained 121 yards and scored three touchdowns. Matt Carlson scored twice; and Jeremy Butterfield once in the game. O’Gorman went on to win the State Class AA title that year.

DAKOTA BOWL XXIV O’Gorman 15 Washington 27 Washington beat O’Gorman in the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl, the first loss by the Knights in their signature game since 1998. John Bull scored three touchdowns for the Warriors. John Lyons scored for O’Gorman on a 1-yard run and later on a 7-yard run, but the Knights couldn’t stop the Warriors.

DAKOTA BOWL XXV O’Gorman 7 Roosevelt 14 Sioux Falls Roosevelt got its first ever victory over the Knights, snapping an 0-15 streak. Tom Hill threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Sean Powell for O’Gorman’s only score in the game.

DAKOTA BOWL XXVI O’Gorman 38 Lincoln 0 A crowd of 9,000 watched O’Gorman capture its 25th straight victory over the Lincoln Patriots with a 38-0 victory. O’Gorman led 24-0 at halftime and added two more scores in the second half to give O’Gorman a 20-7 career record in the event. Dusty Coleman scored twice, and Chris Isaacson and Tom Jarding each scored once to lead the Knights.

Matt Leedom returned an interception for a touchdown, and Ryan Grossman added a field goal in the game.

DAKOTA BOWL XXVII O’Gorman 24 Roosevelt 14 The Knights won the 2004 state championship rematch with a gutsy effort in front of 9,500 people at Howard Wood Field. Dusty Coleman rushed for 77 yards and scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Senior Ryan Isaacson scored two TDs in the first half to pace the Knights.

Senior Tom Ronan added a 38-yard field goal in the game. O’Gorman moves to 21-7 in the annual contest.

DAKOTA BOWL XXVIII O’Gorman 28 Washington 6 The Knights used their trademark rushing attack to wear down the Warrior defense in the second half en route to their third straight win in the fall classic. As a team, the Knights amassed 412 yards rushing, including 223 from Danny Isaacson. He had a 79-yard touchdown run right before half to put the Knights up 14-6. Josh Sweets added two touchdowns and 93 yards rushing in the effort. It was O’Gorman’s 29th consecutive victory in Class 11AA. DAKOTA BOWL XXIX O’Gorman 14 Roosevelt 7 A rematch of the 2006 state championship game was delayed nearly an hour as a thunderstorm forced the evacuation of 10,000 fans from the grandstands. When the game finally started, the

Knights used a half-back pass thrown from junior Will Powell to senior Matt Greenfield and an 11-yard touchdown run from senior Dillon Lebrun in the first half to hold off the Riders. Senior Danny Isaacson led all backs with 78 yards on the ground. With the win, O’Gorman moves to 23-7 all-time in the annual event.

DAKOTA BOWL XXX O’Gorman 22 Sioux Falls Washington 14 The Knights led the number-two ranked Warriors 9-0 at halftime. Phil Wright opened the second half with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Junior quarterback Tony Viger paced the Knights with two rushing touchdowns and 4-4 in passing completions. O’Gorman moved its record against rival Washington to 7-0 in the last seven games.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXV O’Gorman 28 Sioux Falls Washington 10 The Knights got back on track with a win over last season’s state champion Washington Warriors.

Luke Fritsch led the Knights offense scoring three touchdowns on runs of 52, 47, and 12 yards. Matt White scored first on a Washington fumble taking the ball in from 1-yard out late in the first quarter.

Fritsch scored to put the Knights up 14-3, but the Warriors answered to keep the game close with a 14-10 halftime score. The third quarter saw neither team score, but Fritsch broke the drought early in the fourth quarter with his 47 yard run which put the Knights up 21-10. After a Washington turnover, Fritsch added the final touchdown with a little over four minutes left in the game. O’G had 266 total yards of offense and made the Warriors pay for their five fumbles.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXI O’Gorman 40 Sioux Falls Lincoln 0 The Knights capitalized on six Lincoln turnovers and the absence of Lincoln’s starting quarterback to claim the shut-out win in front of 7,500 people at Howard Wood Field. Senior Greg Billion caught six passes for 80 yards and three touchdowns from senior quarterback Tony Viger. Viger added two rushing TDs in the game. With the win, O’Gorman moved its record to 24-7 in the annual contest, including victories in the last six games. The victory marked the 30th consecutive win against Sioux Falls Lincoln.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXVI O’Gorman 29 Sioux Falls Lincoln 34 Lincoln returned the opening kick-off 92 yards for a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead in Dakota Bowl XXXVI, but the Knights fought back with a touchdown run by Dodi Makwinja. Early in the second quarter, Colin Zimprich added a field goal to give the Knights a 9-7 lead. The Patriots managed to add another score late in the first half to take a 14-9 lead into halftime. Both teams came to life in the second half with the Knights scoring three times in the fourth quarter. Fritsch went 8 of 13 for 163 yards and three touchdowns hitting Jack Peery twice and Ben Johnson once to cut the lead to 34-29 with 1:29 to play in the game. Lincoln recovered the onside kick and hung on to take the win.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXII O’Gorman 9 Sioux Falls Roosevelt 12 The Riders scored with 46 seconds left in the game to give them the win in front of 8,200 fans at Howard Wood Field. The Knights outgained the Riders 261-210 and dominated the third quarter after the game was tied 6-6 at halftime. O’Gorman drove deep into Rider territory twice in the third quarter but only ended up with a field goal to go up 9-6 at the end of the quarter. Kelby Tague had 104 rushing yards and Sam Steffl rushed for 102 for the Knights.

It was only the third win in 27 tries for the Riders against the Knights.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXVII O’Gorman 14 Sioux Falls Roosevelt 24 Roosevelt got on the board first in Dakota Bowl XXXVII, but the Knights fought back with a 65-yard drive capped off with Luke Fritsch taking the ball in for the score. Roosevelt went on to lead 21-7 at the half and hung on to win 24-14. Fritsch found Jack Peery late in the fourth quarter, but two interceptions and two fumbles were too much for the Knights to overcome in this Dakota Bowl loss.

Peery led the Knights with 104 yards, five catches and a score. Makwinja had 17 carries for 65 yards.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXIII O’Gorman 24 Sioux Falls Washington 7 The Knights blocked three kicks on special teams in route to a 24-7 win over the defending state champion Washington Warriors in the 33rd Annual Dakota Bowl at Howard Wood Field. Sam Steffl carried the ball 33 times for 149 yards to lead the Knights who did not complete a pass. While the Warriors scored first, the Knights defense owned the evening holding Washington scoreless after the first drive of the game. With the score tied 7-7, Nic Steffl blocked a punt and Austin Pharis scooped up the ball and ran it in to give the Knights a 14-7 lead.

Flynn Donelan scored from nine yards out to make the score 21-7 at the half. The Warriors moved the ball well throughout the second half but were never able to find the end zone.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXIV O’Gorman 7 Roosevelt 19 In a defensive battle, Roosevelt clung to a 9-7 lead at half and went on to add the only points in the second half to pull out the victory. After losing

DAKOTA BOWL XXXVIII O’Gorman 34 Brandon Valley 22 The Knights marched to a victory in Dakota Bowl XXXVIII largely by combining the talents of Hunter Thompson at quarterback and sophomore Canyon Bauer at wide receiver. Bauer ended the night with 234 receiving yards on nine catches with three touchdowns. His scoring started early when he caught a short pass in the first quarter and went 73 yards for the touchdown. More was to follow as Thompson ended the night with 352 yards through the air and one touchdown run. Bauer scored on a catch followed by a 29-yard run in the third. Andrew Reuter followed with a reception and a 65- yard run to put the Knights ahead for the first time. With just over three minutes left in the game, Bauer caught a 28-yard pass to seal the victory. Kristin Jakowicz was 4-4 on extra point attempts.

DAKOTA BOWL XXXIX O’Gorman 35 Harrisburg 26 Harrisburg’s inaugural performance in Dakota Bowl XXXIX saw a talented Tiger squad giving the Knights all they could handle for four quarters. The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter and led 14-7 at the half. Sporting their new grey uniforms, the Knights staged a comeback in the third quarter with Isaac Struck finding Canyon Bauer for an 81-yard touchdown pass 48 seconds into the second half. Bauer finished with three catches for 175 yards. Harrisburg refused to go away as they quickly retook the lead on the next possession. The back and forth scoring continued when Struck threw to Nick Billion for a 47-yard touchdown regaining the lead 21-20. The Tigers scored with a little over nine minutes to play coming within two points of the Knights (28-26), but the twopoint conversion attempt failed.

DAKOTA BOWL XL O’Gorman 42 Washington 33 Dakota Bowl saw No. 2 O’Gorman taking on No. 3 Washington in a rematch of last year’s semifinal game. The Knights scored on their first play from scrimmage with Zach Norton finding Canyon Bauer with a 73-yard touchdown pass. The Warriors turned the ball over on the kickoff allowing the Knights to score their second touchdown less than a minute into the game. After stopping Washington on the next drive, OG took the ball 69-yards with Bauer scoring. Norton found Evan Wittry just before half to push the lead to 28-7 at the half. The Warriors mounted a comeback in the second half scoring on an interception to pull within two points.

The two-point-conversion attempt failed, and the Knights drove the field for a final score making it 42-33 with under five minutes to play. Norton completed 18 of 27 passes for 294-yards with three touchdowns. Bauer led the Knights scoring with 9 catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Kowalczyk led the defensive effort with 10 tackles and assists.

OGJH FOOTBALL Coaches 8th GRADE COACHES Zach Cole Zach Cole will be coaching 8th grade football this fall. Zach, an OGHS graduate, received his BS in Biological Sciences from South Dakota State University.

Zach was a student assistant with the SDSU men’s basketball program for four years, and he has coached 8th grade boys basketball at OGJH. Zach will also be teaching 8th grade science at OGJH this fall.

Sam Jacobsen Sam Jacobson, a 2011 OG grad, will return to coach 8th grade football this year. Sam graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in sociology. He is the owner of Dog Guard of South Dakota.

Emily McCourt, a native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, continues as head coach for the Lady Knights Volleyball team this fall.

Emily studied at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN and went on to receive her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Augustana University. She served as a graduate assistant at Augustana for two years, and she is currently the High School Prep Master Coach/Youth Director at Kairos Elite Volleyball Club here in Sioux Falls. Previously she has coached club volleyball for Minnesota Select Volleyball in Maple Grove, MN, and she was the varsity assistant at Totino Grace High School in Fridley, MN.

Zach Buchholtz, a Spring Valley, MN native, is assisting with the volleyball team this year. He is a senior biology major at Augustana University, and he plans to attend Buchholtz coaches for Kairos Volleyball and also works in the Recreational Services Department at Augustana.

Kim Nelson, originally from Crystal Lake, Illinois, is the junior varsity volleyball coach at O’Gorman. She attended the University of South Dakota where she majored in Elementary Education with a Kindergarten and Early Childhood Endorsement. Nelson teaches at Christ the King School. She and her husband Steve are pictured with their yellow lab, Peggy Sue.

Sarah and her husband Jeremy graduated from Ipswich High School. Sarah was an outstanding high school volleyball player and even had the opportunity to play in the Down Under Bowl in Australia the summer after her senior year. Jeremy and Sarah have been living in Sioux Falls since 2013 and have a daughter who will be a junior this year at OG. Sarah went to school at Presentation College where she received her bachelor’s degree in nursing.

She and her husband now own a small business in Sioux Falls, Mission Nutrition.

Sidney Clayberg currently attends Augustana University where she is majoring in exercise science for athletic training. Originally from Tea, SD, Sidney’s family includes a brother and sister along with her parents. She will be coaching the freshman volleyball teams this year.

Ryan Beier will be the head coach of the boys’ varsity soccer team this fall. Beier has coached the varsity girls’ soccer team since 2003.

Beier graduated from the University of Sioux Falls with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Beier played soccer for USF and later coached the USF soccer team. He teaches at O’gorman Junior High, and he and his wife Jessica have two sons, Evan and CJ, and a daughter, Mareth.

Sheila Diercks will be the varsity girls’ soccer coach this year. Diercks, a 2009 O’Gorman graduate, teaches fourth grade at St. Michael Elementary.

Diercks played soccer at Augustana College where she graduated with a degree in elementary education in 2014. She is pictured with her husband, David and daughter Flynn and son Declan.

Gary Glissendorf will assist with the boys soccer team this year. Gary has worked at SDN Communications for 16 years along with coaching competitive soccer for Dakota Alliance for the past seven years. Gary and his wife Susie, who works at Avera Health, have two children: Kendall and Ethan.

Devin Kirschman will be a volunteer coach with the boys’ soccer program this year. Devin has two sons Cedrick and Chris.

Christopher Haak

A 2004 graduate of OG, Ben Koch is happy to be “back home” at O’Gorman High School. After high school, Ben attended the University of NebraskaLincoln, receiving both his Bachelor of Music Education and Masters in Music Degrees. He currently teaches Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz I and II, and AP Music Theory. Additionally he directs the Marching Knights, Pep Band, Brass Choir, Show Choir Band, and the Musical Pit Orchestra. Beyond his duties at OG, Ben attempts to stay active musically, accompanying and conducting regularly at Holy Spirit Parish, subbing with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, and performing with the Sioux Falls Municipal Band.

Christopher Haak is originally from Urbandale, IA and is a graduate of Augustana University. Chris will be starting his first year as the 5-12 band director in the Hills-Beaver Creek School District and is excited to continue working with the O’Gorman Knights Marching Band.

Aside from teaching, Chris is also a member of the Sioux City Symphony, the Northwest Iowa Symphony, and enjoys performing in other various groups throughout the surrounding area.

Heather Nelson Heather Nelson is originally from Philip, South Dakota and is a graduate of Northern State University. She teaches band at O’Gorman Junior High and assists with the O’Gorman High School Marching Band. Heather and her husband Kevin live in Sioux Falls.

Meredith Moseed Meredith Molseed is entering her sixth year as the color guard coach for O’Gorman.

Originally from Sioux Falls, Molseed graduated from O’Gorman in 2010. She also assists with choreography for the spring musical.

Teresa Fester

Rachael Kramer, a 2007 OG alumnus, is the O’Gorman High School Director of Choirs. She graduated from Augustana University in 2011 with a dual major in music and K-12 education. Rachael and her husband, Chase, have a two daughters Veronica and Lucia.

Teresa Fester, a 1988 O’Gorman graduate, is the Theater Director at OGHS. Teresa graduated from SDSU with her undergraduate degree in 1994 and went on to receive her master’s degree in communication studies in 1998. She is also the head coach of the Oral Interp Team.

Lindsey Ussery Lindsey Ussery comes to OG from Papillion, Nebraska. She attended the Conservatory of Music at the University of Kansas City, and the University of Nebraska Omaha where she received a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education. Lindsey will be our Show Choir Director this year along with teaching music at OGJH.

THEATER DIRECTOR Scott Nelson Scott Nelson is a native of Tea, SD and a graduate of Lennox High School.

An SDSU alum, he taught at OG for 22 years before becoming the school librarian. He directs the Fall Play, the Homecoming Variety Show, and the Children’s Play each year. He and his wife Susan have four boys: Austin, Alex, Anthony, and Andrew

DEBATE COACH

Bob Stevens A native of Redfield, S.D., Bob Stevens has taught debate at O’Gorman since the fall of 2011. After graduating from Northern State University, Stevens taught for two years in Redfield and a year in Brookings before becoming the first Lincoln debate coach when the school opened in 1965.

He left Lincoln to work for the South Dakota Education Association from 1972-1985. Stevens then returned to teaching at Washington High School from 1985-1991. After leaving Washington, Stevens worked once again for the SDEA until he retired in 2002. He ran for state senate in 2006. Stevens and his wife, Karen, have two children and three grandsons.

Skye Bork, a West River native and former gymnast at Kadoka High School, attended the University of South Dakota where she majored in Contemporary Media and Journalism. While at USD she helped coach the Vermillion High School gymnastics team.

She later became the head coach and took Vermillion to a 4th place finish at the state meet. Bork will be the head gymnastics coach for the O’Gorman Lady Knights this year. She is also a social studies & journalism teacher at OG.

Lana Bauer-White served as the head coach for the Knights Gymnastics Team from 1994-2006, and is now an assistant coach. Lana, who teaches physical education at St. Michael and Christ the King elementaries, married Darren White in 2013. She has three sons: Boston, Canyon, and Dawson; and Darren has a son, Tanner, and a daughter, Haley.

ASST. GYMNASTICS COACH Josi Gaspar Josie Gaspar is a 2012 O’Gorman graduate who competed in gymnastics throughout high school. She was a member of two gymnastics teams that placed third in state competition. While attending the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Josie coached at the Nebraska School of Gymnastics. Gaspar has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and works as an accounting assistant in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School’s business office. She and her husband, James, a 2012 OG grad, have a son, Mikey.

TENNIS Coaches Don & Kate Barnes Don Barnes coaches the O’Gorman boys tennis team.

Barnes graduated from USD in 1969. He coached boys & girls tennis at O’Gorman from 1972-1980. He also served as City Tennis Director from 1973-1978 and was the Augustana men’s Tennis Coach from 1981-1983.

Kate Barnes is the head girls tennis coach at OGHS. Kate and her husband have been involved with tennis as players and coaches for over twenty years. Kate works as marketing director for Westward Ho Country Club.

The Barnes have three children, Anne, Thad and Ben, all graduates of O’Gorman.

Aaron Strand, a 1997 O’Gorman High School graduate, completed his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science at Augustana in 2002 and completed his masters degree in Education from the University of Sioux Falls.

Strand is head track and cross country coach at O’Gorman.

He currently works as the activities coordinator for the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools and the Lorang Theatre Coordinator. Aaron and his wife Lauren have three daughters, Jersey, Laiklyn, Jada and a dog, Cooper.

Alex Butterfield, a 1997 O’Gorman graduate, has been an assistant track coach since 2004.

This year he becomes the new assistant cross country coach. Butterfield graduated from Augustana College in 2001, and he currently works for Wells Fargo Bank.

2019 O’GORMAN/CATHEDRAL HALL OF FAME Inductees Dr. Tom Lorang - Excellence in Service

Hon. Susan M. Sabers ‘88 – Distinguished Alumni

Tom began his journey with the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools in 1978 as the first lay principal at O’Gorman High School. He held this role for 13 years while implementing many changes within the school including a greater focus on academic excellence. These efforts resulted in O’Gorman High School being awarded the Exemplary School Recognition Project, now referred to as the Blue Ribbon Award, in 1985 by the US Department of Education. He then served as the Superintendent for the Catholic schools in Sioux Falls for 23 years. During his time as Superintendent, Tom was responsible for uniting all the Catholic schools, elementary through junior high and high school, into one system to better appropriate funds and operate the schools more efficiently. His Building on Excellence campaign has raised millions of dollars over the years for the school system allowing student tuition assistance, competitive pay and benefits for teachers and staff as well as up-to-date facilities and equipment in the schools for teachers and students. Along with the tremendous strides he made for the Catholic schools system, he has many notable accolades including Outstanding Young Educator (City of Yankton), Outstanding Young Religious Leader (City of Yankton), Outstanding Guidance Counselor (State of SD), Principal of O’Gorman High School chosen one of 270 exemplary schools in U.S., Outstanding Doctoral Candidate in Education (University of South Dakota), Distinguished Alumni Award (Dakota State University), 3 time Superintendent of a Blue Ribbon School (U.S. Dept. of Ed.) and Honorary Doctors Degree (Mount Marty College).

Judge Susan Sabers attended St. Joseph’s Cathedral for elementary school and graduated from O’Gorman High School in 1988 with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota on both academic and leadership scholarships, graduating with honors with a major in Political Science and a minor in English. In the fall of 1992 she joined the first-year class at the University of South Dakota School of Law. When she graduated, she was voted the outstanding graduating student by the faculty and was awarded the Gavel Award. Susan earned awards for the highest grade in many of her classes, won the school’s moot court tournament, and wrote a law review article that was published in the South Dakota Law Review. Following graduation from law school, Susan served as a law clerk for the Honorable C. Arlen Beam of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. She returned to Sioux Falls, where she engaged in the private practice of law for nearly twenty years. When appointed to the bench by Governor Daugaard, Susan was a partner and founding member of the law firm of Fuller & Sabers, LLP. Susan began serving as a circuit court judge in January 2013 and serves in the Second Judicial Circuit. Early in her practice, Susan was voted Young Lawyer of the Year by the South Dakota State Bar Association. In 2013, she received the Volunteer Service Award from the law school for her continued service to that institution. She has served as a member of the State Bar’s Law School Committee for more than a decade and routinely speaks on topics of interest at the Law School. Susan has served as a bar commissioner for the South Dakota State Bar Association, the President of the Second Circuit Bar Association, and as a member of the Board of Governors for the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association. Susan chairs the South Dakota Board of Bar Examiners — the group charged with evaluating applicants seeking licensure as lawyers in the State of South Dakota — and has served on the Board for more than fifteen years.

Doug Lindner - Excellence in Athletics Doug grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Lincoln High School where he competed for legendary Coach Rich Greeno in cross country and track and field. Doug then attended Jamestown College in North Dakota, and participated in both cross country and track and field for Coach Rollie Greeno. While at Jamestown, Doug became a school record holder in two different track events. He was inducted into the Jamestown College Hall of Fame as a member of the 1976 track team. After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in History/Political Science, Doug joined the O’Gorman family in the fall of 1979, where he taught in the social studies department for the next 40 years and also coached both cross country and track and field.

Throughout Doug’s career coaching the cross country team, he was able to substantially grow the number of dedicated runners in the program. The girls’ team won the state championship in 1986 and again in 1988. The boys’ team went on to win a state championship in 1994. Over the years that Doug coached, his girls’ teams won over 150 of the events they were entered in. His cross country athletes combined for over 100 top 25 All State Awards. Doug’s teams had four individual state champions, and six individuals awarded National High School All-American status for their efforts during the cross country season. Doug started coaching track and field in the spring of 1980. A highlight in the early years of the program was when both the boys’ and girls’ teams won the Sioux Interstate Conference Track and Field meet for the first time in the spring of 1993. Since that time, both groups have enjoyed success at the conference and state level.

The boys’ and girls’ teams have had multiple top 4 team finishes over the years. Doug was fortunate to have coached numerous state champions and dozens of state place winners in track and field. After 37 years of coaching, Doug retired in the spring of 2016 but continued to teach at O’Gorman until the spring of 2019.

Gary Johnson ‘67 – Distinguished Alumni Gary attended O’Gorman High School and graduated in 1967. In 1977, he and his wife Stephanie moved to Minneapolis where Gary joined a fledgling city magazine company that grew into a diverse, journalism-based content creation company: MSP Communications – where he has remained for 42 years. Over 46 years in publishing, Gary has served in a variety of oversight roles and leadership positions, currently as president of MSP’s two divisions, MSP-C and MSP Owned Media. He has overseen the creation, strategy development and management of over 200 magazine, tabloid and digital titles and projects, including Mpls.St.Paul magazine, the longest running and largest paid circulation magazine brand in the state of Minnesota, Twin Cities Business, one of the most recognized regional business magazine brands in the nation, a variety of corporate brand magazines including award winning Delta Sky magazine, the largest in-flight magazine in the world, and MSP-C, one of the largest branded content companies in the nation creating print and digital content for some of the largest and best known companies in the world. MSP’s magazines and digital products have garnered over a thousand national awards for editorial excellence, writing, digital marketing and design, including two Emmys, Magazine of the Year, Best Custom Magazine, Best Business Magazine and 2018 Content Marketing Agency of the Year. Gary was an early adopter, not only in the city magazine and custom publishing industries but also in digital media, founding MSP Interactive in 1996, a web development and online content service division and a key media partner in the development of Channel 4000, one of the nation’s first web-based, television news channels. He also was inducted twice into the South Dakota Music Association’s Hall of Fame in 2011 and 2014.

Michael Johnson ‘64 – Distinguished Alumni

Alex has a long list of accomplishments in O’Gorman athletics. He has a multitude of track records as well as honors in football. Alex began competing on the Knights’ varsity track team as a freshman in 1994 and was a letter winner each of his four years competing. As a freshman, he earned a share of the freshman 100 meter school record and qualified for his first state track meet, also in the 100 meters. The following spring, as a sophomore, he helped the Knights claim a state title in the medley relay. His junior year, Alex won the Sioux Interstate Conference (SIC) 100 meters, placed second in the SIC 200 meters, and helped lead the Knights to a second place conference finish as a team in 1996. He also went on to tie the school record in the 100 meters, win the 100 meters at the region meet, and place second at the state meet in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and as a member of the Knights’ medley relay team. His senior year, Alex was undefeated in both the 100 and 200 meters. During that season, he won the Howard Wood Dakota Relays 100 meters, captured SIC conference titles in both the 100 and 200 meters, helped lead the Knights to another second place conference finish as a team, set new school records in both the 100 and 200 meters, and won state titles with the best times across all classes in both events. In football, Alex was a two-way varsity starter his junior and senior years. As a junior, he helped the Knights to a 7-2 record, along with a second place SIC conference finish. His senior year, he earned all SIC conference honors and helped lead the Knights to the state semifinals in 1997. Alex returned to O’Gorman High School in 2003 as an assistant coach, working with the varsity football team from 2003 - 2015 and with track from 2005 - present.

In his time working with boys and girls sprinters at O’Gorman High School, he has coached school record holders and state champions in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4x100 meter relay, 4x200 meter relay, medley relay, and 4x400 meter relay.

Michael S. Johnson, described by the Washington Post as a “Republican heavyweight,” has had extensive experience in the Executive and Legislative branches of government and the private sector, spanning 43 years in Washington.

Johnson served on the White House communications and speech-writing staff of President Gerald R. Ford before moving to Congress in 1977, first as Press Secretary and later as Chief of Staff to then House Republican Leader Bob Michel of Illinois. Prior to his retirement in 2018, Johnson worked for 28 years in the private sector with two law firms, APCO Worldwide, an international public affairs firm, and the OB-C Group, a lobbying firm. He also has extensive background in voluntary service. He is a cofounder, past chairman, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Congressional Institute, a 33-year-old organization dedicated to improving the functions of the Congress and educating the public about the Legislative Branch. Johnson was also among the founders of the Main Street Republican Partnership, an organization created to advance bipartisan approaches to the governing process. Johnson has hosted regular strategy sessions of senior policy and communications professionals in Washington, and founded the group’s website, newgopforum.com. He launched and continues to be involved in other advisory groups on Congressional reform and the creation of a Joint Committee of Congress for that purpose. Johnson is a co-author of Surviving Inside Congress, a book originally written for new members of Congress and new staff. He served for many years as an instructor in political communications for the Legislative Studies Institute, a non-profit graduate-level program for individuals pursuing careers in the Legislative Branch. He served on the operational staff of every Republican National Convention from 1980 - 2008. Prior to his Washington career, Johnson spent seven years in journalism, the last of which as editor-inchief of The Register–Mail newspaper in Galesburg, Illinois.

04 Football Team - Excellence in Athletics

The 2004 Knights, coached by all-time state wins leader Steve Kueter, ushered in a new era of dominance for the football program. Only the second team in O’Gorman history to go undefeated (13-0), the 2004 squad captured the school’s first state title in eleven years, defeating perennial rival Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the first-ever all-Sioux Falls championship game, known at the time as the “biggest game in South Dakota football history.” Junior quarterback Dusty Coleman and senior fullback Josh Mahoney both rushed for more than 1,000 yards on the season, leading an offense that averaged more than 40 points per game behind a lightning

fast offensive line anchored by seniors Matt Adamson (tight end), Dane Ingebrigtson (tackle), and Brandon Vaca (guard). Coleman and Tyler Schulte, a junior wide receiver, pioneered a new style of spread offense for the Knights, setting then- single season records in TD passes (Coleman - 15) and TD receptions (Schulte - 14). On defense, seniors Matt Adamson (defensive end), Chris Isaacson (defensive end), Dane Ingebrigtson (defensive tackle), Josh Mahoney (linebacker), Jimmy Peterson (cornerback), and Steve Viereck (safety) anchored an elite starting defense that allowed an average of just 3.3 points per game and held public school powerhouse Roosevelt to 10 points total in two games—a 14-3 victory in the Dakota Bowl and a 14-7 victory in the state title bout. Ryan Grossman (kicker), Chris Isaacson, and Josh Mahoney were First-Team 11AA All-State selections. Mahoney was named the Argus Leader Elite 45 Captain and South Dakota Football’s Gatorade Player of the Year. With seven two-way starters, the 2004 team exemplified mental toughness and resiliency, avenging a devastating semifinals loss from the previous year, and starting what would become the longest winning streak in South Dakota big-school football history (38 games)-, a record that still stands today.

The 2005 Knights, led by legendary O’Gorman greats Dusty Coleman and Tyler Schulte, ran the table in Class 11AA football for a second consecutive year (13-0), culminating in a 42-7 state championship game route of the Yankton Bucks before a 10,000+ crowd at the Dakota Dome.

The 2005 team rewrote the school’s record books, setting season records for most points per game (45.6), most season rushing yards (4,079), largest winning margin (56 – against

Spearfish), and most season passing TDs (22). Tyler Schulte set the record for the longest kickoff return in school history (99 yards), and ended his career as the school’s all-time leader in points (246), TD receptions (23), and reception yards (1,127). Coleman set school records in career rushing yards (2,454), career TD passes (31), and career interceptions (11). Kicker Tom Ronan set season records for points kicking (79) and extra points (67). Following their perfect season, a record seven players made the Greater Dakota Conference All-Conference team, including Coleman and Schulte, and fellow seniors Matt Leedom (linebacker), Ryan Isaacson (fullback), Dan Fettig (guard), Levi Pole (safety), and Joe Sweets (defensive end). Fettig, Coleman, Schulte, Isaacson, and Pole were named first-team Class 11AA All-State selections, as well. Juniors Tom Jarding (running back) and Jordan Gerdes (defensive end) were key players on both the 2004 and 2005 teams, too, leading their team the following season to a 12-1 record and a runner-up finish. The O’Gorman Knights had an astonishing record of 46 wins and 2 losses from 2003 to 2006, appearing in three consecutive state championship games and winning two state titles during this period.

The 2005-06 boys basketball team, coached by Derek Robey, was the first state title in arguably the best run in South Dakota basketball history.

Not only was this team the first ever boys basketball state champion from O’Gorman High School, but they were the “spark” that led to back-to-back state titles and five championships within a seven year period. That is something no other SD team has done since the early 1980s (since SD went to a three class system). They were also the first “AA” school to play in 4 straight championship games. The Knights have been in nine state championships in the last 16 seasons, winning 6 state titles. We can thank this team for starting this unbelievable tradition of O’Gorman boys basketball.

The 2005-06 team also claimed the GDC Championship and a District Title finishing 21-4. Senior Dusty Coleman was also the recipient that year of the Spirit of Su Award for both academic and athletic abilities. Congratulations to a group of outstanding young men that started a phenomenal tradition in O’Gorman boys basketball.

The 2006-07 Boys Basketball team certainly came into the season on a high note. Some of the guys were part of the historic state title run the previous year. And after helping the Knights win the first ever O’Gorman Boys’ Basketball Title in 2005-06, this year’s team knew there was a target on their back and realized early on everyone would be out to get the Knights.

This squad finished the season with an average 16-9 record. Seeded fifth going into the State Tournament, they defeated the odds by winning another State Championship and “back-to-back” State Titles for O’Gorman High School. On their way to winning the State “AA” Championship the Knights, Coached by Derek Robey, accomplished a State “AA” record by being the first team to be in the State Championship Game four consecutive years.

In this four-year era, the Knights only lost 19 total games. They won the conference title three out of the four years and won the District “1AA” four straight times continuing an unbelievable stretch of phenomenal O’Gorman Boys Basketball. Congratulations to this amazing team on keeping the OG HOOPS tradition strong.

Tina Barnett has been the Head Competitive Cheerleading Coach since 2014. Barnett graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Apparel Merchandising in 2004. Tina has been involved with cheerleading for over 20 years. She has coached at the collegiate level at SDSU (coed & all-girl), as well as the high school level, for 10 years. Tina and her husband Jim (1995 OG Grad), have two children, Jameson & Brenna.

Jill Barch is the assistant competitive cheerleading coach. She is a 2000 O’Gorman graduate. She attended SDSU and the University of Missouri-Kansas City and is now a neonatal nurse practitioner in the NICU at Avera McKenna Hospital. Her husband, Alan, is a personal trainer. Jill and Alan have six children: Bricelyn, Ackley, Moxie, Maverick, Riggins & Trinden.

Derek Robey, a Mitchell native and NSU graduate, is entering his 14th year as boys basketball coach at O’Gorman and his 31st season as a head coach. Robey led the Knights to their first ever state championship in 2006, won back to back state championships his first two years with the Knights, and won four more championships in 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2017. Robey, a physical education teacher at St. Mary School, also assists with junior high cross country. Derek and his wife Kim, have one son, Alex. Alex and his wife Morgan have two children.

B.J. Keppen will once again teach math and coach sophomore boys basketball as well as junior high track for the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Keppen received his bachelor’s degree from SDSU in 2003, and he earned his masters degree in math in 2006, also from SDSU. A native of Volga, Keppen coached at Sioux Valley four years before coming to O’Gorman. His wife, Katie, teaches with the Harrisburg School District. The Keppens have a son, Braxton, and a daughter, Halle.

ASSISTANT COACH Tim Weidenbach Tim Weidenbach, a Parkston native and DWU graduate, will be assisting Coach Robey and the boys basketball team. Weidenbach has over 25 years of coaching experience at the high school, college, and professional levels. Weidenbach is the Director of Higher Power Sports, a non profit organization that serves area high school and college student/ athletes and coaches. His wife Amy is a financial planner with Weidenbach Financial Services. The Weidenbachs have two daughters, Mckenzie and Ellie.

Dan Hughes, a 2009 OG graduate, returns this fall as the sophomore girls basketball coach. Hughes is an education assistant at Christ the King.

Hughes, who received his bachelors’ degree from the University of Sioux Falls with a major in secondary education and history, will also coach junior high football this fall and baseball for the Knights next spring.

Barry Matthies, a West Central High School graduate, will be an assistant coach with the Lady Knights Basketball team this winter. Matthies graduated from Dakota State University in 1991 with a major in elementary education.

He currently teaches at West Central High School. Barry and his wife, Ann, reside in Hartford. They are pictured with Ann’s two sons, Jacob and Luke

Crystal Richter, a 2001 O’Gorman graduate, continues at OG this fall as a faculty member and coach. Crystal received her bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State Mankato with a major in mathematics. She teaches math courses and assist with junior high volleyball and track, and junior varsity basketball.

Tiffany Giese, from Ortonville, MN, is the Head Athletic Trainer at O’Gorman High School.

Tiffany attended North Dakota State University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science-with a Psychology Minor and a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training.

Prior to moving to Sioux Falls, Tiffany spent four years in Aberdeen, SD working as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Presentation College.

During her time there, she worked primarily with the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the women’s basketball team.

She also served as a preceptor for students in the Athletic Training Program.

Taylor Bergh, MA, ATC, returns as Assistant Athletic Trainer at O’Gorman High School. Previously she was Head Athletic Trainer at Elk Point-Jefferson High School for two years. She received her Master’s Degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from USD where she worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Coyotes’ football, softball, and women’s basketball teams. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from Dakota Wesleyan University where she played women’s basketball. She is originally from Mitchell, and her husband, Trae, is a Physician Assistant.

WRESTLING HEAD COACH - MATT LYNCH

Matt Lynch returns as the head wrestling coach at O’Gorman High School this year. Lynch, a 1995 Roosevelt graduate, received his bachelor’s degree in counseling from the University of South Dakota. Lynch went on to earn a master’s degree in mental health counseling. Lynch was an assistant wrestling coach at O’Gorman for over ten years. He works as a Chemical Dependency Counselor at Keystone Treatment Center in Canton, SD. Matt and his wife Teisha have three children - Aidan, Teagan and Cael.

GIRLS & BOYS GOLF Coaches Tom Jansa Tom Jansa, a 1980 graduate of OG, will be coaching the girls & boys golf teams this year. While at OG, Jansa was a four year letter winner in golf. He went on to gain membership in the PGA (Professional Golfer’s Association) while managing three golf courses for the City of Sioux Falls from 1987 to today. Jansa’s girls’ golf team won the state championship this spring. Tom and his wife Liz (Education Assistant at Terry Redlin Elementary) have two daughters, Claire (OG 2013 and member of three state champion girls golf teams) and Sophie (OG 2020).

Chad Veire is a Sioux Falls native and 2007 Roosevelt graduate. He graduated from South Dakota State University in 2012. Chad is currently the Assistant Golf Professional at Elmwood Golf Course. He is currently pursuing membership and certification in the Professional Golfer’s Association (PGA). Chad also is a coach for the First Tee of South Dakota.

Jeff Gordon will be coaching the freshmen girls’ golf team this year.

Jeff teaches social studies and is the social studies department chair at OGHS. He and his wife Ila have four children: Jenny, Jeff, Katie, and Michael.
