Legacy Farms has worked with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Gordon Correctional Facility to source a reliable group of individuals to help on the dairy in Washburn County near Shell Lake, Wis. “It’s a benet for us and a benet for them,” said Dan Coates of the relationship between the dairy and the state penitentiary. Fond du Lac County couple wins Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder award Loehrs develop high-scoring, show-winning cattle By Stacey Smart Contributing Writer
EDEN, Wis. – Kurt and Sarah Loehr, owners of Forest-Ridge Holsteins in Eden, Wis., recently won the Wisconsin Holstein Association Distinguished Young Breeder award – an honor reserved for accomplished registered breeders between the ages of 21 and 40. The award was presented to the Loehrs during the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s annual convention Feb. 22-24 in Manitowoc, Wis. In the past 15 years, the Loehrs have bred or developed more than 70 Excellent cows (12 scored 93 points or higher), had four state show winners, ve national show winners and numerous all-American and junior all-American nominations for both black and white and red and white Holsteins. The herd’s BAA is 111.2, ranking Forest-Ridge ninth in the nation for its herd size and 54th overall. The Loehrs milk 72 cows and have Turn to LOEHR | Page 6
