An important cause that we have tried to bring life to here at Dairy Girl Network has been the catch all phrase of “balancing it all”, mental health awareness, and women specific needs. This year at Expo we hit all three through our lineup of activities for dairywomen whether you are an industry representative, dairy farmer or maybe both, like so many of us.

This year at World Dairy Expo we are pleased to invite you to our sixth annual Dairy Girl Network Connect Networking event on Wednesday, October 3rd. What started as an informal gathering of 45 women during Expo week has grown to over 150 women catching up with old friends, making connections with new friends, and a new location at the Sheraton will make this event more accessible for all attending.

Another important function in it’s third year is the Family Lounge. As a young mother myself, I know the benefits of this space for mothers to escape with the little ones, nurse or pump and make the neccessary diaper changes in a comfortable space. This year, with the help of DGN board member, Carrie Mess, we are lucky to have a lactation consultant who will be available for lactation questions on Thursday, October 4th from 3:00 to 4:00 pm and again on Saturday, October 6th

from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Mothers who may be nursing or pumping or mothers-to-be please be sure to note these times and plan to join us in the Famly Lounge.

We will close out the week with our Sharing Wisdom educational seminar on Friday, October 5th. This year we have the enjoyable Jolene Brown who will bring life to the hard topics of farm life. She will share “10 realistic and applicable ideas to help bring a breath of fresh air, renewal, resilience and balance to our work and family life during these challenging times.”

From one dairywoman to another, I encourage you to find some time to connect with your fellow dairywomen while at Expo or if you can’t make the trip, you look at traveling in November to Forward TogetHER, or you become more active in our organization through various opportunities.

Find one of our events with a time that works in you schedule and jump on in. We want to get to know you more than just a name on our membership list.

9 THINGS TO DO IN MADISON DURING WORLD DAIRY EXPO

I am a proud Wisconsin dairy farmer, a mom and a wife. I also serve as a DGN Board of Director. I hope you enjoy your trip to World Dairy Expo and to Madison this year.

So I’ve already talked about where to eat while you’re in Madison. Now it’s time to talk about things to do in Madison while you’re here for World Dairy Expo.

Yes, I am aware that there are plenty of things to keep you busy without ever leaving the World Dairy Expo grounds, but honestly, sometimes you need a break from all the awesome that World Dairy Expo is. Plus if you’ve never really seen Madison beyond the grounds and your hotel, you’re really missing out. Plus not everyone who attends World Dairy Expo is of legal drinking age so that limits what’s available when the show closes for the night. So here is a list of things that you can do while you are visiting our state!

Schuster’s Farm - This agritourism farm, complete with a historic round barn is a quick 20 minute drive from the Expo grounds and has something for everyone. If you’re visiting Expo with small kids, this is a fun place for them to play and have some room to run. Older kids can have fun doing the massive corn maze. Teens and adults can check out the haunted forest on Friday and Saturday night. Have a group? You can call ahead and plan a bonfire complete with s’mores.

If you visit, be sure to check out the calves in the animal area because they are ours!

Visit Green County - What Napa, CA is to wine, Green County, WI is to cheese. The county directly to the South of Madison was settled by Swiss dairy farmers. It is now home to the most Master Cheesemakers in the country. I highly suggest starting at lunch time in New Glarus. Try the roesti, raclette and fondue at the Glarner Stube or the New Glarus Hotel. After lunch go tour New Glarus Brewing and sample some of the best beer that you can’t get outside of Wisconsin. Then mosey a touch further south to Monroe, home of Alp and Dell Cheese, my favorite cheese store. Pick up some super fresh curd, and since Alp and Dell is connected to the Roth cheese plant, you can watch cheese being made through the windows.

Henry Vilas Zoo - In 1904 the Vilas family donated 63 acres of land for a zoo to be built in Madison. It was named in memory of their son. They had one condition when they donated the land, the zoo must always be free. Today the Henry Vilas Zoo is a great place for families to have some fun without breaking the bank. And our zoo isn’t just a little zoo with only a handful of animals. It’s large and full of fun animals, learning and exploring.

Sassy Cow Creamery - Just a little ways outside of Madison you’ll find Sassy Cow Creamery, home to a conventional and organic dairy herd as well as an on farm milk bottling and ice cream plant. Sassy Cow has a retail store where you can try out their delicious products and offers tours by appointment of their brand new rotary parlor.

Madison Children’s Museum - If you’re visiting Madison with kids, you’ll want to check out the Madison Children’s Museum. The museum is full of fun for kids and adults and recognizes our state’s strong ag roots with lots of fun farm themed activities and play. The museum is located steps from our state capitol so you can walk across the square and see both!

Hoard’s Farm/Dairy Shrine/Nasco - Just East of Madison you’ll find the town of Fort Atkinson, WI; home of Hoard’s Dairyman Magazine, Hoard Dairy Farm, National Dairy Shrine and Nasco’s retail store. So by taking one 20 minute drive you can learn all about the foundation of modern dairy and pick up new farm supplies. That’s a win! Hoard’s Dairy Farm offers tours by appointment only, so call first to get your tour scheduled.

Memorial Union Terrace - Madison is a college town and a college town needs a Student Union right? Well our’s is pretty special. Not only can you get an ice cream cone made from UW cows at Babcock Hall, you can also get a draft of beer and sit on the terrace overlooking Lake Mendota while listening to live music. The terrace is open to all ages.

J. Henry & Sons - On a farm a little North of Madison along side fields of rye and wheat grows a very special type of corn. The heirloom variety planted by the Henry family produces kernels that are red. Those red kernels are the first step in making the multiple award winning J.Henry & Sons Bourbon. You can schedule a tour and tasting for a group up to 30 people.

Dairy Girl Network Events - If you’re a woman who’s job or life relates back to the dairy cow, the Dairy Girl Network is for you! This year the Dairy Girl Network will be again be sponsoring the family lounge on the Expo grounds. On Wednesday night the Dairy Girl Network will be hosting it’s annual Connect networking event at the Sheraton and Friday we will welcome Jolene Brown to speak at our special event. Grateful Giving We all know how important it is to have helpers in life and around the farm. After all, they say it takes a village to raise a child, so it must take a really large village to raise a herd! Here are some highlights from a recent discussion with Dairy Girl Network’s Exchange Facebook group about giving gifts of thanks to our helpers around the farm. These ideas are especially helpful with the holidays right around the corner!

• Clothing for sure! Hoodies, t-shirts, hats. Our co-op gave us fleece vests one year that I still wear a lot!

• The best gift we ever received from a salesman was actually a leather overnight bag. Something we can actually use and it’s put in a cupboard with a million other things!

• Food! Nothing better than when people bring treats (and coffee) to the barn!

• Homemade cookies and Carmel corn!

• A gift card to a local restaurant!

• We got an extension cord a few years ago. I use it all the time!

• Flashlights were something different I saw one year!

• We make apple pies for people we work with. Try to deliver before Thanksgiving or Christmas, it sometimes helps take one thing off their list to make for holiday gatherings!

• USB Sticks!

• A nice plastic/metal clipboard!

• Yeti style coffee mugs with covers!

• Kitchen utensils!

• Duffel Bags!

• Soft-sided cooler bags!

• Boots! We’ve been gifting our new employees boots when the start and a replacement pair at Christmas or when they might be needed.

Q: Leah, did you grow up in dairy?

A: Yes, I grew up on a Registered Holstein dairy farm in Elkhorn, WI. Growing up we milked 43 cows. Since that time, my parents, Leo & Karen, and brother, Adam, have built more modern facilities and a milking parlor and milk about 150 cows.

Q: What inspires you?

A: I’m inspired by the thought of solving real, meaningful problems with people I respect and love to work with. I’m also inspired by my friends and family (I know, cliché) – I want to be a friend, daughter, sister, wife and mother that is worthy of the amazing people in my life.

Q: What was the last thing you did that brought you happiness?

A: My brother, sister and I planned a surprise 40th wedding anniversary party for my parents just last week. They were truly surprised and it was a lot of fun to bring together their friends and family to help them celebrate!

Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?

A: I love that I have the opportunity to problem-solve each and every day. I feel privileged to partner with clients that are doing exciting things and each day presents a new challenge and a new opportunity.

Q: When was the last time you did something for the first time?

A: Last week. I made a cake that was featured on The Great British Baking Show (a current obsession in our household) that challenged my baking skills. It was delicious even if it didn’t look as good as the ones on TV! Q: What’s something you look forward to during World Dairy Expo?

A: The Holstein show itself is always #1 for me. I also enjoy meeting the scholarship recipients at the National Dairy Shrine banquet, running into industry friends that I haven’t seen in a while and enjoying a few grilled cheese sandwiches from the UW Badger Dairy Club tent.

Pre-Conference Activities on Tuesday, November 6th Tell Your Story: It’s in your DNA; Tuesday, November 6, 1:30 to 3:30 pm, sponsored by Mycogen Seeds Have you ever been asked about GMO’s? Have you ever wished you understood how to explain why GMO’s are used to produce crops? Biology of Quality Milk: Udder Dissection Wetlab, Thursday, November 8, 1:30 to 4:00 pm, sponsored by Zoetis Achieving quality milk production requires protocols and procedures that support the udder’s natural defenses against disease. Through discussion and hands-on activities, participants will learn about normal udder anatomy and how procedures on the farm can improve or impair these udder defenses. Participants will also get a chance to see the structures in the udder that are important to the biology of milk let down and production. Working in small groups with real udders, participants will have the opportunity to explore normal and abnormal udder anatomy and practice proper treatment and dry off techniques. Through this experience, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how farm protocols and procedures are designed to work with the anatomy and biology of the udder to produce high quality milk for consumers. Space is limited to 30 participants so reserve early and will cost $25 per attendee and includes lunch.

New Manager’s Crash Course, Thursday, November 8, 1:30 to 3:30 pm This small group, highly interactive session is designed for those who have recently stepped into the important role of leading a team. Many times people are promoted to manager because they are smart, hardworking and reliable. However the actual people management part of this job is usually baptism by fire. This Crash Course helps fill that gap by providing training on the critically important people side of a new leader’s role. Greta Halahan’s upbeat style will help the group move quickly as they discuss real-world situations, share ideas and learn quick memorable tips they can put into action once back at the farm or office. How to run a Stand-up meeting, how to conduct a great performance review and how to handle conflict with ease are just a few of the topics Greta will cover.

Leaving on a jet plane to get to Forward TogetHER? That’s great because the venue is only a 30 minute drive from the Harrisburg International Airport (MDT)! Dairy Girl Network will be providing shuttles to-and-from the Harrisburg airport on the 6th and the 8th.
