HighHigh-Impact Cow Families at DenDen-Kel Jerseys

Compiled June 2012 by Jersey Origins Consultants as a special project for the BK/DK Syndicate

Polled Presence in the Den-Kel Cow Power Sale Background In their quest to breed functional profitable Registered Jerseys™, Kip and Robin Keller have chosen to include consideration of the polled factor in their source cattle and their sire selection criteria, building on their early mentoring by the Chittenden family at Dutch Hollow Jerseys, Schodack Landing, New York. By every meaningful ranking the Den-Kel herd ranks high nationally, for their herd size and within the breed at large. For those who may not be aware, Robin suffered a stroke in November 2011, and is still in a physical therapy rehabilitation facility. Plans for this sale were already launched, as part of Kip & Robin’s overall business plan for their herd and farm operation, well before her medical emergency. Those plans continue to move forward, with adjustments as necessary. Polled AI bulls from Den-Kel A listing of AI bulls from Den-Kel (historic and current, including genomic young sires) is presented in the Cow Power Sale catalog. Of the 40 bulls listed, a dozen (12) are polled:            

For Your Planning The sale catalog is available online, with a link from the opening page of the AJCA website (www.USJersey.com) and in the JMS Sale Calendar section as well. Check the catalog to review the breeding status of each consignment; some of these are parts of a set of choices. Information on each of the major Den-Kel cow families (including the family descending from Dutch Hollow Barber Milady-P-ET, Kip & Robin’s initial polled purchase) is provided in the catalog, with the lots offered grouped by cow families. For those attending in person, a wine and cheese social is scheduled for 6:00 PM at the farm on Friday evening, June 22nd, including time for viewing the sale animals. On Saturday, June 23rd, a picnic is scheduled for 11 AM, with the sale cattle available for viewing, followed by the sale at 1:00 PM. The sale is also scheduled to be broadcast at JerseyAuctionLive.com, which allows online bidding from anywhere you may be located, provided you have an Internet connection (see sale site for instructions).

DenDen-Kel Jerseys – the incredible journey continues Building on the introduction to the Jersey breed provided to each of them in their teenage years by the Chittenden family at Dutch Hollow Jerseys, by the early 1990’s Kip and Robin were ready to establish their own herd. Prior to taking this major step in 1994, when they married and established Den-Kel Jerseys, each one had invested in genetically superior Registered Jerseys™ and housed their cattle with others. Robin’s first Jersey acquisition was Hi-Land Top Brass Farah, bred by AJCC Master Breeder Ray Chamberlain and purchased as a heifer in 1984. Robin bred her first bull for AI placement – Sunny-Rox Legacy – from “Farah,” who also provided four daughters, a sound basis for building an extended cow family in the Den-Kel herd. “Farah” and her ancestors had been bred in the Chamberlain herd since 1933, with her direct maternal lineage tracing back to a cow imported from Jersey Island in 1884 (the 17th dam behind “Farah”). At the 1989 Ogston Dispersal, Kip invested in a bred heifer with a unique Ogston pedigree – Ogston Vertols Jayne. Her first two daughters bred by Kip carried the “Hollyrock” prefix he was using initially, with her next fifteen progeny (many of them ET calves) carrying the Den-Kel prefix. “Vertols Jayne” would go on to complete 9 lactations for Kip and found a major cow family that has been one of the most prolific in the development of the Den-Kel herd. She was the eighth generation in a maternal line bred at Ogston by AJCC Master Breeder John Bishop VI, with the previous seven generations bred by E.S. Brigham, the 1947 AJCC Master Breeder; the furthest back of the Brigham-bred animals was born in 1918. The direct maternal ancestry of “Vertols Jayne” traces to a cow imported from Jersey Island in 1859, and recorded as cow #12 in Volume I of the AJCC Herd Registers; this imported cow is the 30th dam of “Vertols Jayne.” The caliber of these early genetic investments by Robin and Kip set the standard for their careful acquisitions in more recent years, including some joint ventures with other breeders. Among those partnerships are the BK/DK Syndicate (with Dr. Mike Barnes and Dr. Katharine Knowlton) and the Hi-Kel Syndicate (with the Chamberlain family at Hi-Land Farms). Both these syndicate partnerships have purchased animals and developed cow families, with the ET flushing and care of the resulting animals under the daily management of Kip and Robin. A review of the offerings in the upcoming Den-Kel “Cow Power” Sale demonstrates how effectively cow families have been developed, from Robin & Kip’s individual purchases and from the animals acquired by these syndicates. The business plan under which the Den-Kel herd has been developed is profound in its simplicity – Kip and Robin concentrate on daily care and management of the milking herd and young stock, including sire selection and genetic merchandising efforts, and they contract with custom operators for the seasonal farming activities to grow their herd’s forage needs. This has allowed them to avoid expensive investment in farming equipment that is used only seasonally, thus directing their cash flow toward more investment in their herd’s development and improved genetic potential. In pursuit of their dream of farm ownership, they started on a rented farm and

then relocated their herd to a farm that carried an initial lease with the option to buy; they have now purchased this farm, building their equity position and facilitating their further investment in facility improvements to enhance cow comfort and herd profitability. Kip and Robin have been recognized by dairy organizations, AJCA, and international Jersey organizations as they have built their herd and provided leadership to various dairy and general agricultural organizations. In 1999, they received the AJCA Young Jersey Breeder award, and in 2008 they were recognized by National Dairy Shrine with the Progressive Producer Award for their herd size category (presentation picture below, provided courtesy of National Dairy Shrine). Internationally, Robin was selected by the World Jersey Cattle Bureau to receive the JETA Travel Scholarship, which included participating in the 2008 World Jersey Conference, hosted by the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society (on Jersey Island), where she was part of the young breeder panel discussion group addressing the entire conference. At present Robin is in her second term as the AJCA Director for the Second District (New York State). Plans for their upcoming “Cow Power” Sale were well underway when Robin suffered a stroke in November 2011. Moving forward with her recovery is simply another challenge that she and Kip have tackled together, within their commitment to each other and to the development of their Registered Jersey™ herd. The events of June 23rd provide an opportunity for their fellow Jersey breeders to accomplish two worthy goals in one setting – add genetically superior animals to their own herds, and support the dynamic owners of Den-Kel Jerseys in doing so.

Extended Pedigree Presentations – Selected DenDen-Kel Impact Cow Families HiHi-Land Top Brass Farah – purchased in 1984 by Robin, thus igniting a teenage girl’s passion for breeding Registered Jerseys™ that continues to the present. DenDen-Kel Impuls Julie Too – one of the most important impact animals born to date in direct maternal lineage down from Kip’s first major Jersey genetic investment, Ogston Vertols Jayne. (Lots 1 – 22 in the Cow Power Sale are from this family.) Dutch Hollow Barber MiladyMilady-P-ET – the jump-start for breeding genetically superior polled Jerseys at Den-Kel, acquired from their mentors, the Chittenden family at Dutch Hollow.(Lots 23 & 24 in the Cow Power Sale are from this family.) DenDen-Kel H Sweetness – arriving by a fortuitous encounter with associates of Dr. Katharine Knowlton’s Maryland connections, the “Sweetness” family descends from the well-respected cow family in the Potwell herd (in Canada) that also produced the dam of breed impact sire SHF Centurion Sultan. (Lots 24-27 in the Cow Power Sale are from this family.) Pats Perfect Phoebe – an investment by the Hi-Kel Syndicate at the 2007 All American Sale, her daughter topped the 2010 All American Sale. Her maternal lineage ancestry was bred for many bovine generations by AJCC Master Breeder Duane Wickstrom. (Lots 28 & 29 in the Cow Power Sale are from this line.) DenDen-Kel Louie Clarabelle – descending from Daniel Jupiter Gunda, whose direct maternal lineage is the “May” family at High Lawn; Robin credits her work experience at High Lawn as an assistant to the late Marjorie F. Wilde with helping her articulately define long-range breeding goals for Den-Kel. (Lots 30-33 in the Cow Power Sale are from this line.) BK/DK Legal Tort - granddaughter of Lynvail Relay Tipsy, an early investment by the BK/DK Syndicate; she is direct maternal descent of the AU Legend Tipsy line, high-ranked on the AJCA genetic cow lists in the 1990’s. (Lots 34 & 35 in the Cow Power Sale are from this line.) D&E Super Taco Rose – purchased by Kip and Dr. Barnes in the 2003 National Heifer Sale while Robin and Katharine weren’t looking, this heifer is from the herd of AJCA Master Breeders Donnie & Elsa Sherman and developed by the BK/DK Syndicate. This maternal line has been bred in Sherman ownership since Donnie acquired it from another California herd during the years before he and Elsa launched D& E Jerseys. (Lot 46 in the Cow Power Sale is from this line.) Sunny Day Yankee Becky– Becky an iconic cow in the development of production genetics for the Jersey breed, she led the Sunny Day herd as they became the first herd to achieve a 20,000 lb. annual herd average for milk, on her way to become the first US Jersey to complete four consecutive 30,000 lbs. milk lactations, one of which was the World Record for milk production for the Jersey breed when completed. (Lot48 in the Cow Power Sale is from this line.)
