You guys, I can’t hardly believe I’m saying this, but welcome to Volume 3 | Issue 1! That’s right, with this fall issue Dainty Obsessions marks its third year. Whoa, time sure does fly when you’re swooning in pretty wedding things all year long. Speaking of swooning, this issue was a pure joy to put together. Clearly I’m a bit biased, but we easily have the five most fabulous real weddings of the season. I mean the kind of real weddings with jaw-dropping venues, runway model brides, style that flaunts and character that leaves you green with envy. Is six years married too soon to renew my vows? With the launch of Volume 3 | Issue 1, we made sure inspiration and beautiful imagery graced every single page. Our styled shoots bring us to the vineyards of Iowa with a European twist along with detailed analyses of just about every wedding element you can imagine. We get-to-know one of the top-10 pastry chefs of the world, travel to once-in-a-lifetime destinations like Australia, the Canadian Rockies and the wine and foodies paradise of Napa Valley, California. With the Midwest in full wedding swing, we are happily immersed in design, concepts and inspiration. It’s everywhere, and we’ve caught the bug all over again. Etiquette Lucy Henglefelt Q : I have a friend who is having multiple bridal showers, along with an engagement party, bachelorette party, and who knows what else. I’m feeling poor and the events haven’t even started. Is this a typical amount of pre-celebrations? How many bridal showers are too many? A : Yes, sometimes it feels like the pre-

wedding celebrations add up. More and more, couples have pre-social events to celebrate their nuptials. Couple’s showers, friends hosting parties, along with traditional showers are starting to become the norm. It is wonderful that so many people want to celebrate with the couple, but it can be draining on your bank account and your social calendar. Have an open conversation with your bride that you can only attend a few of the events, and pick the ones that she would like you to be at most. To save funds, choose smaller gifts for smaller social gatherings and save the big stuff for the more important events you will be attending. The most important thing is that you support the bride during this wonderful time in her life. It’s the thought that counts! Q : One of my sorority sisters is a bridesmaid in an upcoming wedding. She recently sent out a Facebook message asking the sorority sisters if we would pitch in and help plan the bachelorette festivities. Shouldn’t this be the responsibility of the rest of the bridal party? A : Traditionally, this is the responsibility

of the bridal party. As a guest invited to this event, it is only your obligation to 18

attend. It is wonderful if you would like to pitch in, but are not required to. If you would like to help in a small way, offer to help with one certain task, like mailing invitations or making reservations for the dinner beforehand. Q : When picking a dress, where do you start—your style or silhouette? A : Every bride has a dress in mind for

their special day. To look your best, you should consider both points. You should pick something that is your style and also highlights your best attributes. Your guests and your groom expect for your personality to shine through on your wedding day. Plus, if you pick a design that compliments your silhouette, you will be most comfortable and look like the most radiant version of yourself! Q : How opinionated can I be about the bridesmaid dress selection process? I definitely don’t want to step on any toes, but I do want to look my best. A : This is always a tricky subject. You want

to offer your opinions, but in the end it is the bride’s final say. Offer suggestions as to what styles your body looks good in and how you would feel most comfortable. Stay away from suggesting color selections and materials. This is the bride’s decision. Hopefully she considers these points when selecting dresses for the bridal party, but it is ultimately her day and her vision. If you must, just tough it out and smile. Some day you will get to make her wear a color she may not be particularly fond of.

Q : I do not get along with my future sister-in-law. Do I have to include her in the wedding party? A : Family issues are always difficult when

it comes to selecting your wedding party. The most important thing is to make sure your decision will not make issues worse. Talk to your groom about how you are feeling and see what his opinions are. If you are both comfortable with the choice, whatever it may be, it will make it easier if you are a united front. In the end, weddings are supposed to bring families together, not tear them apart. This could be a perfect opportunity to mend fences and start a new chapter in your relationship. Q : What’s the etiquette on sending out thank-you cards? Who gets one and what’s the time frame? A : Thank-you cards are a must. It shows

you made an effort to personally thank whomever was an important part of your special day. Thank-you cards should be given to anyone that gives a card/gift to you or a person who had a role in your day. This could include vendors, family that helped set things up, or anyone that pitched in last minute to make your day a success. Wedding thank-you cards should be sent out no later than two months from the event date. Your recipients will appreciate your thoughtfulness and love that you acknowledged them. If you don’t get around to it right away, remember that a late thank-you note is better than nothing at all.

Wrap it up Favors with Flavor! WRIT TEN BY ANDREA SNAZA

There is nothing better than sending your guests home with a sweet treat. Chocolate chip cookies trump useless trinkets any day. Couples everywhere are getting creative with what they gift attendees, wrapping up local favorites or cherished family recipes. Make a statement by preparing a cute package for your guests to unwrap. Choose baked goods you know your guests will love or that reflects you as a couple. Delicacies as simple as a brownie or flavored popcorn become special when you package and personalize them. If you know your crowd is going to have a late evening, perhaps a bag of your favorite coffee is the way to go. Make your guests smile with a custom label that says “Brew Sweet Brew” along with your names and wedding date. A small bag or box makes it easy to transport. Stickers with your monogram or tags to tie around the dessert are all intimate details. Finish off your petite package with a ribbon, string or washi tape in your wedding color palette, and you’ll be sure to have your guests talking. While you may have wedding cake or other sweets served throughout the evening, it would be such a “sweet” gesture to set out these perfectly wrapped favors at the end of the evening or have attendants hand them out as guests depart after a night on the dance floor.

Where does your story begin? Tell us how you got started with your craft.

A chef moved in next door to me when I was 15 years old. I started working for him on the weekends and, as they say, the rest is history. You’ve been crowned with a long list of accolades including: one of the Top 10 Pastry Chefs in America, named Top Chef of Bravo’s Top Chef Just Desserts (season 2), and

featured in Food + Wine Magazine, just to name a few. Tell us about your specialty desserts and what is making them world-renowned. I feel that, at the end of the day, it’s

all about quality. I have had a blessed career and have worked for and with some of the best chefs in the world. But, that doesn’t mean a thing if I don’t make quality food. I have focused on doing the very best that I can every

day. I strive to get better every day. I have an amazing team at CH Patisserie that has the same desire to make world-class desserts. What inspires you and your craft?

I get inspiration from a lot of sources, such as fashion magazines, books, locales and people. A great chef that I worked for used to say, “If you get one idea from a book or any other

place, regardless of the cost, it was worth it.” I have never forgotten that. But, it takes skill and practice to turn inspiration into a great dessert. What brings you to Sioux Falls, South Dakota?

My wife and I felt that Sioux Falls was ready for this kind of pastry experience. We love eating amazing desserts. And, since Sioux Falls is a wonderful city and the people are very knowledgeable about food, we felt they would enjoy this experience as well.

From the bride ... Alan and I met over a decade ago as sophomores at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Because of our similar majors, we had several classes together and some shared friends. Alan eventually got up the courage to ask me out, and the rest is now history.

We celebrated our fall nuptials at the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis, close to my hometown

of Apple Valley. We chose the museum for its architecture, history and reception space. While researching several venue options, I came upon Mill City Museum and nothing compared. It perfectly matched our desire to have an elegant, but not stuffy, wedding.

The ceremony took place in the outdoor museum courtyard at dusk, which featured the former flour mill as a stunning backdrop. Thankfully, the rain mist stopped just in time for the heartfelt ceremony to begin. Music was played by the Loring String Quartet. The party moved indoors after the ceremony into the unique museum space, which contrasted modern architecture within the ruins of the mill. After dinner, our guests partied the night away to hits from the ‘80s by a Chicago band, The Breakfast Club. Several guests (and Alan) even took turns being the lead singer!

We designed nearly all of the decorations and arrangements with a gold theme as the prevailing feature throughout the space. Some of the projects we did together with our friends and family included gold glitter table numbers, ceremony programs and dinner menus made on our home computer, and guest gift bags featuring craft beer from Minnesota (representing my home) and cheese from Wisconsin (for Alan’s home). Alan’s mom designed a gold sequin table runner for the wedding party head table.

From the bride ... My husband Adam and I were born in the same hospital, lived in the same town and went to the same school. However, it wasn’t until August of 2009 that we really connected. I was living in Colorado and he in Fargo. We started talking on the phone and spoke to each other multiple times a day, every day. We knew in our hearts that the love between us was very special and we could no longer be apart. The end of April he surprised me a day early (had not even started packing yet) in Colorado to help me move to Fargo. We have been inseparable ever since!

We chose Cathedral of St. Mary Catholic Church simply for the history of the church. It’s so beautiful inside and out, so we kept the decorations to a minimum. The reception was held at Ecce Art Gallery. The floors and old brick walls really caught our attention. It had the historic charm we were looking for in a venue; just the right size for all our family and friends to be close to each other. As for the details, clean and simple is how we like it. Every decision made for the wedding was a team effort. The flowers were light in color as well as the linens, burlap brought the rustic feel to the tables and the vases were romantic. My mom was a huge support to me when the planning got overwhelming, and my girlfriends helped me with the tedious fabric that covered the honey jar favors, along with various other projects. The entire day was just what we had hoped for and even more than we expected.

From the bride ... Matt and I met through a mutual friend, who happens to be an amazing wedding photographer. Ironically, we ended up getting married in she and her husband’s super modern photography studio. I remember calling my dad immediately after the first time Matt and I met at Applebee’s and gushing to him that I thought I was in love, to which he responded, “Okay, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.” As it turned out, Matt was also in love, and he asked me to marry him 12 months later. I have always liked things that are different, so when we started wedding planning, I knew that even the littlest things had to be something that I had never seen or done before. I have a thing for black and white, so that’s where our color scheme and vision began.

I have an aunt who is an exceptional designer. She made all of our decorations for us. I did, however, arrange my own bouquet and all of the table decorations, which were fairly time-consuming even with the help of my awesome friends. I must admit that I did use Pinterest for a couple things, however I tweaked the ideas just a bit. We didn’t want to have a typical wedding and we also didn’t want any drama or stress surrounding the day, so we decided not to have a wedding party, which made planning pretty simple. We opted to keep our dinner menu very casual and hired a local diner to grill burgers, which everyone loved. I’m proud to say that everything from my earrings to the cheeseburgers to the dunking tank (yep, that happened), everything described our quirkiness perfectly.

From the bride ... Seven years to the day before our wedding, Sam and I first crossed paths with help from a friend who wanted to set us up. At first, Sam didn’t want to meet because he was moving to New York City. So our friend organized a casual happy hour instead of a one-on-one date, and Sam and I met without realizing I was the girl intended for the initial blind date. The organic meeting turned romantic. I moved to the Big Apple the following year, he popped the question five years after that and on January 4, 2014, our original meeting spot became the wedding venue where we made things official.

“We chose to hit the pavement between ceremony and reception venue. In theory it was such a romantic idea, but it was so cold that we had to run in order to escape the freezing conditions.� ^ Bride


We wanted to dream up a creative, playful and elegant soiree that celebrated the inescapable fact that January in Minnesota meant it would be a white, wintry wedding. Things began with our love of paper and handwritten illustrations. I love writing letters and sending cards, and the wedding invites were no exception. I penned the words, which were then letter-pressed on white cardstock. The save-the-dates featured an illustration by Sam of a pair of giraffes—an animal we both have an affinity for since we started seeing them everywhere early into our courtship. We wanted to gift all of our out-of-town guests with something special. We stuffed gray paper bags, and rubber stamped with the same giraffe artwork. Inside were Minnesota staples: Old Dutch potato chips, Pearson’s Nut Rolls, Pearson’s Nut Goodies, hand warmers, Bulleit bourbon (our favorite), Runa tea (from a friend’s local company), ibuprofen, two clementines and a gift certificate for an Uber car ride.

The venue was extra special, as it was where we first met. Taper candles and arrangements of privet berry, kumquats, ranunculus, lisianthus, eskimo roses, lilies and camellia leaves ran the length of the tables at Bar Lurcat. The tables were covered with gray paper runners. Stockmar crayons in navy and white were set atop each place setting. One of our favorite things to do is to come up with silly games, poems and puzzles. We thought it would be a great way for guests to engage with one another during dinner and for them to write notes to us, too. We cut out all of the sketches and writings as a keepsake from the day.

From the Bride ... A mutual friend had been waiting for years for an opportunity to introduce us. When Zach and I finally met, it was absolutely love at first sight. We barely knew each other, yet immediately started dating long distance. With Zack’s family in Michigan, mine in Nebraska, college buddies in Chicago, and new friends in Kansas City, we were challenged to pick a central location. Our initial thought was to have a destination wedding. We looked at everything from outdoorsy, rustic locales to cosmopolitan downtown lofts. We were trying so hard to squeeze our personalities into an unfamiliar space that we lost track of our original intent: celebrate the community that brought us together. All it took was a casual 4th of July gathering at my parents’ neighborhood pond for it to dawn on us—t he perfect venue was right under our noses. Pure bliss could be contained in a moment: sharing a summer meal with loved ones under an old tree, glass of lemonade in hand, watching the kids catch fireflies. A picnic at the pond!

It was important to us to treat our guests. Therefore, we set out to make every detail special, delightful and attentive— but always understated.” ^ Bride


This dreamy vision of an idyllic gourmet picnic is what fueled our entire wedding design. We started with how we wanted our wedding to feel, making design decisions based on the emotions evoked rather than just the way things would look. We jokingly referred to this process as creating our wedding “brand,” and it was something we considered for absolutely every decision, right down to the eating utensils. Adhering to our wedding “brand” called for a careful balance since we were trying to marry the relaxed nature of a picnic with the style and sophistication desired for our formal event. For example, we chose a boxed picnic dinner instead of a plated meal or buffet because it reflected the bliss of a summer’s day. To ensure it wasn’t too casual, we concentrated on selecting gourmet ingredients with a beautiful presentation. Another example would be the tent. Zack was the one to discover the wonder that is clear top tents. I couldn’t help myself, we had to splurge. Being able to dine under the stars was spectacular.

We had to be decisive about when to DIY and when to hire professionals. We are surrounded by creative people, and everyone was so eager to help. I still don’t know how on earth to describe my incredible mom’s contributions. She’s a brilliant gardener and cultivated most of the wedding’s flowers in her own garden. Zack’s sister created the invitation and print design, which was a dream because she completely understood our vision and carried it out better than I could have instructed. My grandma and her bridge club lovingly assembled all of the party favors. Our neighbors put hours into landscaping the pond all summer. Another family member donated white benches for cocktail seating and many other décor items. We turned to vendors for things like the striking floral arrangement hanging above the head table, the tent lighting design, etc. Anything that was hard or that needed to be extra crisp, we farmed out to a professional. We had the time of our lives! Everything came together perfectly, just like the idyllic summer night we had dreamed it would be.

No. The real bread and butter of your wedding is the moment that you say “I do,” making a lifetime commitment to each other. Everything after that is simply icing on your beautiful, multi-tiered cake. And one of the sweetest ways to top off your weighty vows and magnificent wedding is to celebrate and bask in your vows on a sweet honeymoon. Here, we give you a sneak peek into two honeymoon venues that will just add to the many reasons saying “I do” was the best decision in your life.

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

A year-round destination, Napa Valley is a fantasy wonderland for wine, food and romance aficionados. This 30-mile long and fivemile wide premier wine-growing valley is tucked away in Northern California and is only a short drive from either Sacramento or San Francisco. Where to Stay: Mary Jo recommends a sojourn at Andaz Napa, a 141-room boutique hotel conveniently located in downtown Napa. From the Andaz Napa, you can venture out to numerous tasting rooms, shopping, and restaurants after spending time in the rural parts of the valley during the day. “I prefer a stay in Napa

as there is just so much more to do at night, especially when you stay downtown like where Andaz Napa is,” Mary Jo says. “There are also several bed and breakfasts in the area that are reasonable and lovely to stay at. What to Do: There is no shortage of things to do in the Napa Valley. In addition to the obvious vineyard hopping, if you are looking for more adventure you will not be disappointed. A historic wine train is available for tours and fine dining, a romantic hot air balloon champagne breakfast, epic spas and mud baths, bike rides and shopping. Mary Jo also highly advises making appointments at all the wineries you plan to visit as well as a driving service. “There is a company that you can hire to drive your rental car for you as you go around to all the different wineries so that you can simply enjoy sipping and savoring,” she advises. Need we say more? Cheers!

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: With some of the greatest world attractions like the Great Barrier Reef, the Opera House in Sydney, and Sydney Harbour, Australia is an adventurous honeymooner’s dream location. “Australia would be the perfect destination for the honeymoon couple that are looking for adventure, tons of activities, and have the time to experience it,” says Kristina Wolfe at Travel Leaders Sioux Falls. Where to Stay: Australia is a vast continent and country (sixth largest country in the world) with several climates and numerous cities to explore and visit. As your time may be limited once you’re there, Kristina suggests a few stops, including Melbourne and Sydney. For a splurge in Melbourne, the everpopular and luxurious Langham, Melbourne hotel is exquisite in every which way and will spoil you honeymooners rotten. In Sydney, the Intercontinental offers reasonable priced

accommodations with some rooms boasting an unparalleled view of the harbour. Wherever you choose to stay, don’t forget to stop and indulge in every moment as you explore a totally new world together. What to Do: The options are truly limitless for honeymoon activities in Australia. In Melbourne, Kristina says a must do is the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. “It is a dining experience traveling around the city of Melbourne at night. It is spectacular.” While in Sydney, Kristina suggests doing the famous bridge climb (over Sydney Harbour Bridge) and of course seeing the Opera House. Naturally, you cannot visit Australia and not see the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system and a diver’s dream. Kristina says from Sydney to make a trip to Port Douglas to “relax and unwind at a beach resort and experience the Great Barrier Reef.”

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Is there a better way to fire up your new life together than meandering around beautiful countryside and enjoying some of the finest food and wine on the planet? We think not. Mary Jo Nelson, owner and travel consultant at Travel Partners Sioux Falls, agrees. “Napa is a great honeymoon destination as it is such a beautiful area to go to,” she says. “Also, since it is so close to San Francisco, a lot of couples will do two to three nights in San Francisco and two to three days in wine country so you get the best of both worlds.”

The honeymoon: Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada Married: June 8, 2013 Not all honeymoons are perfect tans and mojitos on the beach. For some, relishing in the wilderness of dense conifers, hiking mountainous terrains and canoeing turquoise waters is what romance and relaxation is all about. For Nate and Cindy Heinz, they would have it no other way. “We knew we didn’t want a tropical destination since we were honeymooning in June (hurricane season). Nate did a ‘best honeymoon ever’ Google search and Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada came up as a destination. The more we researched it, the more we knew this was the perfect trip for us!” says Cindy.

With all that Canada has to offer, the adventurous honeymooners will find there’s little time to laze in a beach chair with activity options including hiking, canoeing, fishing, gondola rides up the mountain, relaxing in natural hot springs, exploring quaint little towns and enjoying mouthwatering cuisines. “On day three, we hiked a three-hour (round trip) moderate hike where we stopped to enjoy views of Mirror Lake and ate lunch at the Lake Agnes Tea House. 114

With seven days and six nights, the active couple spent their time exploring Banff, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the emerald waters of Lake Louise and Calgary. “We rented a convertible for our travel from Calgary to Banff and Lake Louise. It added a little extra expense, but the accessibility to mountain views was worth every penny. Three of the nights we stayed at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise where we were surrounded by soaring mountain peaks, the majestic Victoria Glacier and breathtaking views. This place stole our hearts and we never wanted to leave,” remembers Cindy.

“Our fifth day, we rented canoes and spent some time actually on Lake Louise. We were able to take some stunning photos of the lake. We also went to the Gondola at Lake Louise for some amazing views of different mountains. There we saw Grizzly Bears and a Caribou up close. Each night, we ended with a spectacular dinner, perfectly paired wine and incredible desserts. Our final day, we to the Calgary Tower where you can see 360 degrees views and for miles and miles. After that, we packed up and headed for the airport. Our hearts broke leaving such an incredible place behind, but we were excited to begin our lives back home as Mr. and Mrs!”

How did the two of you meet?

We met on a blind date. A guy friend of Barb’s decided she needed to meet someone nice. He went, introduced himself to Tom and then arranged for all of us to have lunch. This was done without either of us knowing about the other person. They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like and what got you through it?

Tom changed careers and I put my teaching career on hold to be at home with our newborn son, Eric. Shortly after this we moved from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. Our commitment to each other and our family is what helped us get through the big changes.

The secret to a successful marriage is communication. Never ask “why” questions. Do not say “why were you late?” when what you really mean is “I am upset that you are late.” How do you deal with disagreements?

What is your most memorable wedding moment?
