Letter from the Publisher for guests (and also gives them all of the sweets - kudos to s’mores and The Cake Lady). Our staff headed to Minneapolis to the bright and beautiful Calhoun Beach Club for Cocktail Hour Dos and Don’ts. Not only does it have tips for throwing a successful and classy transition between the ceremony and reception, but it’s jaw dropping. After you gasp when you see the bride’s m. Elizabeth Bridal jumpsuit (slay), get ready for the edible and drinkable art by D’Amico Catering. Days later, we hopped back in the car and headed to the Black Hills to set up camp (see what I did there) for our Glamping into Marriage editorial. One of the first groups to experience the new Under Canvas Mount Rushmore, Timeless Wedding & Event Rental outdid themselves with natural details (and just wait until you see more of Flowers by LeRoy’s greenery).

Engagement Story

ASHLEY + TIM BY KYLE DETERMAN

KELLY BIRCH PHOTOGRAPHY

After graduating from PA school in Chicago, Ashley Brower took a job in Minneapolis, MN. Little did she know that job and some help from Tinder would lead to Tim Meyer, her soon-to-be husband. “I got on Tinder not really expecting anything worthwhile, so when I met Tim and we started hanging out, I was pleasantly surprised,” Ashley chuckled. The two kept things casual until the feelings were undeniable.

14

Ashley added, “We are the kind of people that if it's a Saturday morning and we have been sitting around for an hour, we need to go do something. We just fit.” It turns out that Ashley was so outdoorsy that she needed ACL reconstruction surgery, leaving her to recover in her downtown apartment on the twelfth floor. Knowing she lived alone and would probably struggle, Tim made it a point to stop by every night after work to fill her ice, bring her food, and make sure she was set for the night.

Not only were Tim and Ashley immediately attracted to each other, but they quickly found that their hobbies were identical, making spending time together easy and natural.

“He basically tucked me into bed [every night], and after he started doing that, it was pretty clear that this guy really cares about me and is super sweet,” Ashley remarked.

“I was looking for someone that enjoyed similar hobbies like camping, hiking, breweries, and we immediately hit it off. She challenges me every day, and I love that,” said Tim.

Fast forward three years and the relationship was ready for the next step. Tim had planned on proposing during a camping trip, until he found out the ring wouldn’t be ready for another six weeks. After a little tweaking, Tim came up with an equally

romantic plan to whisk Ashley off her feet.

“TIM IS A VERY TRUE, HONEST PERSON. HE IS VERY TRUE TO HIMSELF, AND I REALLY ADMIRE THAT.”

Tim told Ashley they had dinner plans and that the details were a surprise. They arrived at Nicollet Island, leading Ashley to believe they were eating at the Nicollet Island Inn, a place they had always talked about trying. “Right when we got out of the car, Tim handed me a paper bag and a blanket, so I thought we were going to have a picnic,” Ashley explained. They began to walk away from the restaurant, and it didn’t take long for Ashley to notice the horse and carriage. All of a sudden this dinner date was so much more, creating the perfect scene for the perfect proposal. “Toward the end of the ride, the driver asked if we wanted to take a picture on the Stone Arch Bridge,” said Ashley. “The city was just starting to light up, so

we went to pose, and when I turned around, Tim was down on one knee.” Now that the engagement is official, the planning has begun for their September wedding. The couple is tying the knot at Legacy Hill Farm in Welch. With the natural theme of 'French country,' Ashley plans on keeping things simple, but elegant. “The idea of having a big party with all of our favorite people there at the same place and the same time, and knowing they're all there for us is what I'm most looking forward to,” said Ashley. While the two plan for their big day and finalize last minute details, Ashley reminisces about meeting Tim and how excited she is to spend forever with him. She said, “Tim is a very true, honest person. He is very true to himself and I really admire that.”

idwest floral designer Leigh McCoy had a love for flowers that couldn’t be satiated by a measly garden. McCoy and her mother, Ann, set out to make a passion into a lifestyle by starting Bella Rosa. Moving from her home to a studio to her new storefront in downtown Sioux Falls, SD, DO snagged McCoy for a quick sit-down to talk flowers and weddings and the excitement of a new location in a bustling neighborhood.

How did Bella Rosa start?

Tell us about your new location.

Leigh McCoy: All through high school and college I worked in a flower shop, and when I graduated, I knew I wanted something of my own. I’ve always had a knack for flowers, so I just decided to open my own shop. It was nice because I started simple and worked my way up. Going from my house to a studio gave me the chance to figure things out in my own time. Luckily, I had a good background of the business, so I already knew what flowers worked well, what to choose and how to order, which can be a tricky process. I also started the business with my mom, which made things a lot more exciting in general.

LM: At first it was difficult because I had never had the retail hours, so I knew the location I chose needed to be somewhere I wanted to be for eight hours a day. My mom and I went back and forth with that concept, but every time we started to doubt the move to the Jones 421 building, something pushed us back into this spot. It’s been about a two year process, so we are happy to be here. I actually started in my home, which was a pretty good setup for a while. Our basement is nice and open, which allowed me the space to work. Once we entered the rental business, we knew we needed more

space, so we moved to a studio in Harrisburg. Now, being in Sioux Falls, it is an exciting feeling knowing people are able to walk in and see the product in person, which is something we have not always had. Why is Bella Rosa different than other floral shops? LM: One of the new features we are have is the openmarket concept. We were lucky enough to get the green door wall, which allows us to open up the shop in the warmer months, creating the opportunity for people to walk right in from the street and see our product. Not only that, but our flowers are set out in a way that people can pick what they want and build their own bouquets.

3 FUN FACTS ABOUT BELLA ROSA • • •

Leigh’s favorite flower is the ranunculus. Bella Rosa’s business is a mother/ daughter company. Leigh started doing arrangements in her basement, which was great for flower scents, but not great for storage.

Being located in Jones421, our customers are also able to walk around this u-shaped building and visit all of the shops. So, to encourage that, we will have a bar that is located outside of our shop for patrons to sit down and watch us build bouquets and arrange flowers. While we don't serve drinks, this allows people to take what they have purchased elsewhere and enjoy our shop at the same time. What is the aesthetic of Bella Rosa? LM: We offer quality product that lasts a long time in a design that you may not see everywhere else. We pride ourselves on offering a unique experience, as well as a unique product. I don’t stick to traditional rules of floral arrangements, specifically regarding old school design elements that were once considered essential. The only guidelines we follow are to make sure our product looks good and meets the expectations of the clients. With that being said, we love making our bouquets look natural and easy, because flowers should be simply beautiful.

retail. This means we cater to couples and bridal party flowers, as well as additional rentals they may need for their special day. We also do daily flowers, which include holiday flowers, birthdays and thank yous. As far as our retail goes, it will include home décor and gifts that are somewhat eclectic and unique. Any advice for couples? LM: Take the time to understand your vendor and develop your relationship. One thing we see all the time is brides coming in after already making multiple trips to craft stores, only to find they would have saved money in the long run. Trust your florist and remember that their job is to accommodate you. Whether it’s brainstorming other ideas, or making small changes to achieve your dream without breaking the budget, allow them the opportunity to save you time and money.

ertain bridal boutiques create an entire experience for the bride. Through the process, the ambiance, and the quality, Marie & Marie Bridal strives to make finding your gown as memorable as the day you wear it down the aisle. Owners Erin Rallis and Kayla Thompson give their advice on finding your dress after you find 'your person.'

START SHOPPING EARLY. If you have the time, try to start dress shopping 10 to 12 months before your wedding date. Wedding gowns can take up to four to six months to be made depending on the designer, and you will want two to three months for alterations. If you don’t have that much time to find a dress, don’t worry! While your options will be more limited, many designers carry pieces in stock, and sample sales allow you to purchase a gown off the rack.

COME IN WITH AN OPEN MIND. It’s good to do some research before your appointment to get an idea of the type of gown you want. Having an idea of which type of dress silhouette you would like can be helpful to your stylist as they help you pick out different styles to try on. However, don’t be afraid to try on some different options! Many brides that come in looking for a mermaid silhouette 22

have been surprised to find themselves going home with a ball gown. The most important thing is that you feel beautiful on your wedding day, and trying on different styles can give you a feel for what you feel best in.

BRING YOUR MOST SUPPORTIVE FAMILY AND FRIENDS. When deciding who you will take on your appointment, choose those who truly know you and your style and will be supportive throughout the process. You will want people at your appointment who want to find the perfect dress for you, not necessarily their personal favorite gown in the store. If someone is typically a negative person, it’s okay to leave them at home. Remember, this day is all about you! We also suggest limiting your entourage to 4-5 people. Sometimes too many opinions can hinder your decision making process!

BRING APPROPRIATE SHOES AND UNDERGARMENTS. If possible, wear a nude strapless bra and underwear. Brightly colored undergarments show very easily under white dresses, and it can be distracting from the overall look of the gown. If you feel more comfortable in shapewear, bring that along, too! Also, bring along a pair of heels or flats that are similar to what you would like to wear on your wedding day. Shoes can change your posture, so it will give you a better idea of how the dress will fit. It will also help your stylist determine what length to order your gown in.

TRUST YOUR GUT. You will probably end up liking quite a few dresses that you try on, but there is usually one that will stick out in your head. If you can imagine yourself walking

down the aisle in it, it’s probably the one! It’s okay if it’s one of the first dresses you try on. Don’t feel like you need to try on a ton of dresses, because that can make your decision even more confusing and overwhelming.

TAKE PICTURES. Make sure to have a member of your entourage take pictures of your favorite dresses. Some dresses photograph differently than they look in person. Be sure to get pictures of the front, back, and side, too! Most importantly, don’t forget to take a picture with your group once you’ve said yes to the dress! The bridal gown shopping experience should be fun, and it’s nice to have photos to commemorate the special moment. An Instagram boomerang of a champagne toast can be the perfect way to end your appointment!

Engagement Story

MARGO + MATT BY KYLE DETERMAN

MICHAEL LIEDTKE PHOTOGRAPHY

Even though Dell Rapids, SD is a small town, it took Margo Hegge walking in to Rapid Fitness to meet her soulmate, Matt Beukelman. She was simply looking for a gym membership when she met the owner, who happened to be Matt.

“I was quickly drawn to Margo because she helped me actually be me again. I didn’t have to act a certain type of way around her, I could just have fun and we could have the tough and honest conversations,” Matt gushed.

“We became really fast friends, just talking about anything and everything,” recalled Margo. “He asked me out, I said no, and then he just kept asking me out. Finally I went to his house and said, ‘Okay, you can ask me out again.’ We went to Red Lobster for our first date, and I remember it was kind of a disaster because Matt was really nervous.”

When asked about the moment Margo knew Matt was the one, she couldn’t nail it down to one specific moment, but instead says, “It was the constant affirmation of what I already knew and felt. The way he talked about the kind of person he wanted to be, I knew this was the man I wanted to be with.”

Luckily, the second date went much smoother, so much so that Margo and Matt began seeing each other. Besides the initial attraction, both felt there was something more that neither of them had ever experienced. “Matt got me to talk about the real things that matter in life, and knowing I had that with him was amazing,” said Margo.

30

The two realized they were going to be together forever, and it was just a matter of making things official. Matt knew Margo would want an intimate proposal in a beautiful place. On a trip to Minneapolis, Matt came up with multiple plans due to the unpredictability of Midwest weather. “The first opportunity at Minnetonka Falls, I totally forgot the ring in the car. The second waterfall, Minnehaha Falls, the weather was terrible, so we left after five

minutes of freezing. The third outdoor place was on Pike Island,” Matt explained. As life would have it, Margo was tired of waiting, and she made sure Matt was aware. “At this point, I was cold and tired and a little annoyed he hadn’t proposed yet,” she confessed. “I sighed and said, ‘You know, I really thought you were going to propose to me this weekend.’” Funny enough, Matt was ready with the ring and was just waiting for the right moment, which came in the form of a couple walking by. Matt asked them to take their picture, during which he got down on one knee and popped the question. Finally, the planning could begin. Initially, Matt was

32

the head planner while Margo finished teaching. Now that the school year has ended, they are tag-teaming the planning and are starting to get the final details organized. “I am so stoked for our first look. Matt and I are really open, so I’m excited to see how he handles his emotions in that moment,” Margo beamed. Besides the first look, the couple is excited to ring in their “I do’s” surrounded by family and friends at Blue Haven Barn and Gardens in Sioux Falls. “I am excited for my friends and family to see how Margo has helped make me the man I am today,” Matt expressed, showing just a sliver of his never-ending love for his future wife.

rends are all around us, and Melanie Schwab of Melanie Sioux Photography is passionate about one photography trend in particular: boudoir. Starting her photography career with extreme sports, like the X Games and professional teams, Schwab found herself back in the Midwest, needing to find a more suitable photography subject. Shifting to weddings from sports was an adjustment, but exciting just the same. From there stemmed her migration into boudoir, something she has fallen in love with. Schwab let us pick her brain about the ins and outs of classy and elegant boudoir shoots.

How and why did you get started doing photography? Melanie Schwab: My dad always took a lot of pictures of us growing up, and I love being able to look back at those now. I’m really grateful he did that, not only because it allowed me to always have a camera around, but because I can look back at family members that have passed away and remember them in that moment. How did you go from sports photography to wedding/boudoir? MS: I knew I wanted to move back home, and at the time Bismarck didn’t have any teams at the level I was used to photographing. So, I knew I either needed to move to a bigger city or adapt to make a career out of photography. A friend of mine had asked me to be her second 34

photographer at a wedding, which was a bit terrifying because I didn’t want to miss something since you can’t really redo a wedding. That fear and that challenge ended up being what drew me to weddings. The thing about weddings is there are similarities that can be found between weddings and sports. For example, during a ceremony, you have to be able to adjust your camera settings to accommodate for every moment. Just like in sports, the light changes due to their position on the field or the court, so it’s a constant challenge to capture the moment in the best way possible. What types of photography do you offer through your business? MS: I mainly do weddings, boudoir, maternity, and fresh 48 (a look into a newborn’s first 48 hours after birth). My summers tend to go pretty quickly

with weddings, especially because I only do one wedding a week. That allows me to dedicate that entire week to the bride and her needs. As far as your photos go, is there a tone or aesthetic that you stick with? MS: I am really picky with my colors and lighting. I expect white to be white, not white with dark edges. I don’t like to use filters, especially because I shoot hybrid, which is film and digital. Everything I shoot is very natural and very bright, almost whimsical and airy. With that being said, tell me about boudoir… MS: I actually had a bridal client a couple years back that reached out to me for a boudoir session. I was a little hesitant because I thought boudoir consisted of naked women on motorcycles. So, I did some research

and agreed to do a tasteful shoot, and it is still one of my favorite sessions to this day. After that initial shoot, I realized I loved the look of the shots, so I asked if I could share a few of the ones without her face, and she was all for it. After I shared just two photos on my website, I was booked up immediately for boudoir shoots. At the time I was doing all sessions out of my house where I had a big space with bright windows, and it seemed perfect. Then, I said to myself, ‘How am I going to do boudoir sessions in my house?' I decided I just had to be honest with people. We have a giant master bedroom and I knew it would be perfect, as long as I was up front about it with my clients. I had to schedule around two things: my husband’s schedule and the sun.

3 FUN FACTS ABOUT MELANIE SIOUX PHOTOGRAPHY • • •

Melanie’s husband is her favorite second shooter she gets to work with. She started utilizing film photography last year. Nothing ruins a photo shoot for Melanie more than crossing the path of a snake.

How does a boudoir shoot work? MS: When my clients would show up, I’d show them to our master bathroom and let them get ready, drink champagne, eat strawberries, and just relax. Sometimes people get nervous, and I tell them if they can walk around in a swimsuit at the lake, they can do a boudoir shoot. “I LOVE

contract, they are agreeing to complete confidentiality from me. As far as digital files go, everything is password protected, taking your privacy into consideration at every step of the process. Even though I call it ‘bridal boudoir,’ it isn’t limited to only brides. I have a lot of clients that do boudoir shoots as anniversary gifts, as well as maternity boudoir. Any advice for someone who is new to boudoir? MS: Definitely start by hydrating your skin. This will make a huge difference in the natural light. Taking care of your body in general is always a good place to start - drinking a lot of water and moisturizing your skin are big ones. You want to feel pretty and confident, and if that means getting your hair and nails done, then do that. When a client feels beautiful, their photos turn out beautiful. It’s also important for women to understand that boudoir is for all body types, as long as you exude confidence and rock whatever you’ve decided to wear. Why do you think boudoir is starting to gain popularity again?

MS: I think fads and CAPTURING Unfortunately, that setup trends go in a circle. They PEOPLE’S didn’t last long. edding ceremonies are all about the experience of coming together to commit to one another as a couple. Sometimes it’s with over 300 guests, and sometimes the only witness is the officiant. As each experience is different, wedding planners, photographers, and the like are creating custom packages for elopements. DO chatted with Emily Jeffress of Lace & Brass Events in Bayfield, WI on why it's all the craze.

Tell us why elopements have become popular, in your opinion. Emily Jeffress: I believe there is good amount of couples that don’t want a larger wedding. Some couples have a smaller budget, are saving for a house, don’t want to have a long engagement, don’t like all the attention on them, are getting married for the second time, or just really love the idea of the intimacy and simplicity of an elopement. They still want something special, but without all of the time, money, and focus on a grand event. What type of elopement packages are there? EJ: Personally we offer a couple different elopement packages, but they all include a photographer, officiant, flowers, and our assistance

38

and coordination throughout the planning process. Some of the packages include upgrades like live music, cake, champagne, and we even have one for adventurous couples that includes an overnight stay on a sailboat here in Bayfield with many special upgrades.

who are truly eloping (they don’t share the news until afterwards) but with guests. If there aren’t any guests, we have the honor to be one of the witnesses.

Our packages are available anywhere. We love to travel!

EJ: Honestly, no. That is the great thing about elopements; it’s exactly what the couple wants it to be. I’ve had a couple elope and didn’t have their rings yet, because they hired us just a week beforehand!

Are elopements always just the couple and the ordained minister? Or can there be more people? EJ: Our elopement packages can include up to 20 guests, and if booked a few months in advance, we call those ‘intimate ceremonies.’ They’re not quite elopements anymore because people know and a little more planning is involved, but they’re still small and unique in their own way! We do have couples

Is there specific elopement etiquette?

Anything you would like to add? EJ: Do it! If eloping sounds like a perfect option for you, please don’t let family talk you out of it. There is always the option to have a dinner or party later on where you can include them. This is the start to your marriage… do what feels right for the two of you.

“ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS OF AN ELOPEMENT IS THE TIME SPENT AFTER THE CEREMONY TAKING PHOTOS, WHICH USUALLY IS ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF. THE COUPLE IS SO HAPPY, RELAXED, AND REALLY IN THE MOMENT TOGETHER.” - EMILY

TOP ADVICE FOR PLANNING AN ELOPEMENT • • • • •

Embrace the weather. Hire professionals. Make it personal. Get adventurous, if you’d like! Enjoy the simple things.

Deciding to take the next step was a mutual agreement, and was completely based on love and support. The two were engaged for about a year, which gave them just enough time to plan their perfect, intimate wedding. With help from their friends, family, and a recently married couple, these two were able to stay grounded and focused on the end goal: to get married. Influenced by

neutrals, texture, and earthy tones, Jena and Gregory’s outdoor ceremony was full of mismatched bridesmaid dresses, genuine smiles, and a whole lot of love. Taking the celebration to the Hawktree Golf Club, the couple was met with folksy table dÊcor that brought their earthy feel indoors. The rest of the evening was spent listening to heartfelt speeches from their closest friends and family, followed by a night full of dancing to the songs that meant the most to them.

With crazy class schedules and different graduating classes, the couple made it a habit to take one long weekend a summer to spend it together in the Black Hills. So, when their annual trip was approaching, Ashley didn’t think much of it, until Mitch was proposing in a hot air balloon at sunrise. Between finishing school and life in general, the wedding was planned in a swift nine months, with massive help from Ashley’s mom and the groom himself. With the venue picked and a date set, the couple was ready to say ‘I do,’ surrounded by

beautiful navies, blushes, and golds. The day went off without a hitch, starting with games and music in the bridal and groom suites. After the ceremony, the wedding guests were met with live music, an hors d'oeuvres buffet, and a dessert bar. Whether the top priority was dancing or chocolate-covered macaroons, this wedding had something for everyone, including a beautiful space for the newlyweds to share their love with their closest family and friends.

When the time came to go on an actual date, Rita took the nasty blizzard that day as a bad sign. Little did she know, Evan wasn’t about to let a little snow ruin his chances with her. Fast forward to a family vacation in San Francisco where Evan took Rita to Twin Peaks to pop the question. Even though the couple had a year to plan the perfect Jewish-Christian wedding, living in a separate city as their vendors proved to be a challenge they were willing to take on. With the help of their wedding planner, Laine Palm of Laine Palm

Designs and their families, the two were able to organize a day full of love, tradition, and a coffee bar. The ceremony was a modern spin on a traditional Jewish ceremony. Their rabbi made sure to explain the customs to the guests, which brought everyone together. The couple’s guests got a literal taste of both backgrounds through the variety of food available as well, like Chicago-style hot dogs and borscht soup shooters. The night ended with '60s rock ‘n’ roll and, of course, Prince.

Both students at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, the two gradually moved from classmates to studymates to workout buddies. It didn’t take long for the two to become inseparable, sharing their undeniable love for each other and God. They quickly developed a tradition to take each other out for a nice birthday dinner. Unfortunately, Alecia’s birthday happened to fall on the same day Andrew was diagnosed with Mononucleosis. Whether it was modern medicine or pure love,

86

Andrew was still able to pull off the perfect proposal, complete with crème brûlée and 'Will you marry me?' written in chocolate. The couple had two years to plan their DIY wedding. From the bouquets to the cake, the two found ease in the personal details they were able to add. The ceremony included a cross and arbor at the altar, as well as a memorial table. With family and faith being number one in their lives, the couple ended the night by dancing with their families to Christian music that perfectly represented the new chapter.

HANNAH + DEREK PHOTO GR APH E R: MEG C O OPE R PHOTO G RAPHY LO CATION: MAYOWO OD STON E BARN , RO CH EST E R, MN High school sweethearts turned long distance lovers, Hannah and Derek knew they were going to be together forever. But first, the proposal of a lifetime. While hiking on a family vacation in Colorado, Hannah came across seven bags with letters and gifts from Derek. At the last bag was Derek, who proposed with a hand-carved box made by Hannah’s dad with a ring inside. Fast forward less than a year, Hannah and Derek were deep in the throes of planning their dream wedding. As a natural planner, Hannah found joy and excitement where a lot of brides find stress and anticipation. From the venue to the vendors, Hannah had a very clear idea of what she wanted, and if she was unsure, her bridal party and family were there to lend a helping hand.

94

The day itself took place in a gorgeous, dressed-up barn, riddled with details from Hannah and Derek’s lives. There were photos of their parents and grandparents, and a surprise cake that was identical to Derek’s grandfather’s Plymouth Roadrunner. With pink and gold hues at every turn, Hannah and Derek’s wedding resembled that of a shabby-chic outdoor paradise, complete with white barn doors, garland-filled tables, and a sparkler send off. Dancing the night away to country songs about love and happiness, the couple celebrated their new union surrounded by family and friends at their dream venue.

What did take some time was for Jenna to notice him. After weeks of walking out of class together and random conversations their relationship finally took the next step, and they went on their first date. Jump ahead some time and some miles, and Jenna and Reid found themselves in the forests off the coast of Chile. Spending their days exploring the local scenery, and listening to the ocean and playing with lively stray dogs, the couple knew that they were somewhere special.

102

Jenna wasn’t about to let this moment pass, so she got down on one knee and proposed on the beaches of Pichilemu. After an obvious 'yes,' the two took the next four months to plan a stateside wedding while basking in the South American sun. The bride and groom reveled in their outdoor ceremony, surrounded by only their closest friends and family members. Jenna wore her mother’s wedding dress to honor the lessons she has been taught about love and partnership. After the 'I do’s,' the couple stole a few moments alone on top of a hill overlooking the romantic Wisconsin sky, excited for the next step in their love story.

The Covington Inn floats upon the Mississippi River and provides guests with staterooms fit for royalty.

Nebraska OFT’S BED & BREAKFAST 11523 N. 156th St., Bennington, NE 68007 // 402.614.7509

Starting as a way for homeowners to increase income, B&Bs would act as temporary homes for travelers and wayfarers. Fast forward 200 years, and there are more than 17,000 of them in the United States alone, offering personable vacation spots for newlyweds from near and far.

Oft’s B&B was built in 1910, includes a beautiful wraparound porch, and is located just outside of Omaha.

North Dakota LADY ON THE LAKE BED & BREAKFAST 16604 94th St SE, Hankinson, ND 58041 // 701.242.7520

Each of the four rooms have a view of Lake Elsie and include jetted jacuzzis.

B&Bs are more than someone’s home; they are a complete experience. Not only do most offer homemade breakfast, but they also include extra amenities that would usually cost extra at a hotel. Private bathrooms and private entrances are usually par for the course, as well as breathtaking locations like on a lake, in the woods, or in the heart of downtown.

South Dakota 1899 INN 21 Lincoln Ave, Deadwood, SD 57732 // 864.210.1899

A Backyard Affair PHOTOGRAPHY BY BETHANY MELVIN PHOTOGRAPHY PENNY TREE EVENTS, PARKER, SD

THINKING OF HOSTING A BACKYARD PARTY? KATIE MURPHY OF SIMPLY DEVINE BY JANE RAE EVENTS HAS A FEW TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE IT AS ENTERTAINING OR AS INTIMATE AS YOU WISH. da i nt yobs e s s i ons.c om 113

S’more Love

Give us s'more love! S'mores bars are such a fun, interactive dessert bar for your guests. It's simple to throw together, great for the cool, but warm weather, and who doesn't love some melted chocolate on a sweet cracker, topped with a toasted mellow?

114

Add a Little Extra

There are a couple of easy ways to spice up your outdoor table setting. One: Colored drinking glasses! Even if they are just simple plastic glasses with a design of some kind in a solid color, it adds a little extra. Two: Put a flower or piece of greenery at each place setting. It's a simple touch, but really shows you went an extra step to set the table.

da i nt yobs e s s i ons.c om 115

Drink Stations

Drink stations for a backyard party are a must. Guests can help themselves, and they can be used as additional decorative (and functional) pieces. Instead of just water and ice, throw in some fresh mint leaves and slices of strawberries in a beverage dispenser. Label it 'infused,' and boom, it's a fancy backyard shindig. Sangria is always a great refreshing drink choice, and it can be displayed so beautifully with fresh-cut fruit.

Unique Areas

Bring the backyard party to another level by setting up a seating area in the grass. Create a moment with a cozy blanket with some pillows, a small fruit and cheese tray, and maybe some games of some kind. It's a cozy spot for your guests to lounge, stay awhile, and really soak up the outdoors!

Newlyweds AT H O M E

“AT THE CORE OF OUR RELATIONSHIP, WE ARE BEST FRIENDS.” - NORA

NORA + JAKE ODEEN MEG COOPER PHOTOGRAPHY

BY KYLE DETERMAN

Starting their relationship in the stands of the Wisconsin Badgers stadium, Nora and Jake Odeen look back on that fateful day and remember the moment their lifelong friendship began. Growing from friends to soulmates, these two soon found solace is sharing a space. Nora, a labor relations consultant for Target, and Jake, a project manager at St. Paul Linoleum and Carpet, talk to DO about married life and their favorite part of sharing a home. How did you two meet? Nora: We met through mutual friends during a Badger football game. My best friend from freshman year of college ended up marrying his good friend. How long did you two date? How long were you engaged? N: We dated for about four years, and we were engaged for almost a year.

120

How did you know you wanted to marry each other?

What are some of the highlights of your wedding day?

Do you have any wedding day advice for people?

Jake: I knew I wanted to marry Nora because I knew I didn’t want to spend any more of my life without her.

N: Our wedding day was amazing! We had an awesome cover band, and during the grand march one of the groomsmen broke his arm. He continued to party that night and didn’t realize he broke it until the next morning. Our first look was pretty memorable as well. I couldn’t stop crying.

N: Be patient will each other and always be yourself.

N: We are each other's best friend. Life has been very normal and easy with him. I think I always knew he was the one because we are so compatible.

Tell us about your first year of marriage... N: Well, it’s only been six months! I’ll be honest, it doesn't feel different at all. We’ve lived together almost the entire time we’ve been together, so

da i nt yobs e s s i ons.c om 121

that was not a change. We are hoping to start a family soon, so I’m guessing that will be when the next chapter of our lives starts. How did moving in together go? N: Moving in was super easy. I had never lived with a boyfriend before, but he had lived with a girlfriend. There were never any territorial problems or awkward “WE RARELY moments. Do your living styles clash at all?

N: This is our first house and we bought it two years ago. We seem to do everything in February. We started dating, bought a house, got engaged, and got married we will see what is in store for us next February.

SIT STILL OR STAY AT HOME ON THE WEEKENDS.” - NORA

N: I am an extremely messy person and he is not. So he has taught me to be better about being neat, and I’ve taught him it’s okay to leave the kitchen full of dishes for a night. He is extremely hands on, so he can pretty much do anything. He gutted our bathroom, redid our carpet, built a patio in the front, built a headboard, and built a coffee table.

122

Is this the first place you have lived together?

Do you each have a separate space in the home (like a den or reading nook)?

N: He usually goes to the basement to play video games and I take over the living room. We have a pretty set schedule. We come home, have a little happy hour chat about our days, make dinner together, eat together, and clean up. Then I resort to the living room or bedroom and he goes to the basement. Sometimes we’ll send Snapchat videos to each other when I'm in the bedroom and he’s in the basement. We’re extremely lame on weeknights [laughed].

TIPS FOR MAKING “THE MOVE” TALK MONEY FIRST. HAVE INDIVIDUAL SPACES. DON’T FORGET DATE NIGHTS. COMPROMISE IS KEY. TOSS GIFTS FROM EXES.

What does a typical weekend look like for you two? N: We are extremely social, almost to a fault, so our weekends are usually jam packed. We either go to a musical festival or spend days on the lake. We love going to block parties in Minneapolis or going out to dinner. Jake also plays in a softball league, so he has tournaments almost every weekend. I come and join the rest of the wives/girlfriends to cheer him on. Have you guys developed roles in your everyday lives? Who cooks? Who cleans? N: Jake pretty much does everything. He cooks, cleans, does laundry, and tucks me in. I am learning to be better, though! I would rather clean than cook, I'm terrible at cooking - it’s a running joke with us. Have you learned anything new about each other after moving in together? N: We’ve lived together for so long and almost from the beginning, so nothing is very new. I think it’s just compromising and learning things about each other, what makes each of us happy. Even if it’s something that wouldn’t matter to me, if it matters to him, it’s important. I think parenting will be a big monumental step for us. It’s just been the two of us for a very long time. We are ready for that next chapter, though! What’s your favorite thing about each other? N: I love Jake’s patience. He is incredibly patient with me, especially in my times of weaknesses.

“WE JUST LOVE BEING OUT AND BEING WITH PEOPLE.” - NORA 124

J: My favorite thing about Nora is how passionate she is about things she believes in. If something comes into her mind that she wants to do, she won’t stop until it’s done.
