New Delhi/Hyderabad: Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya met the Union Minister for Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan and sought to increase the Maximum Support Price (MSP) for the procurement of paddy from Rs 1,400 to Rs 1,800 per quintal on the grounds of excess moisture content. Dattatreya informed that the farmers were desperate and they were forced to sell their produces at much lower price with no alternative.

Ram Vilas Paswan has assured that he would convene a meeting at Hyderabad and hold discussions with representatives of farmers’ association, representatives of millers’ association and other State government officials who are involved in the procurement of rice for Public Distribution System (PDS), and discuss every issue concerning the farmers. In addition to the thousands of retailers in attendance at the event, more than 20 retail chains affiliated with ANTAD had large booths at the expo which acted as purchasing offices during the show. These affiliated retail chains, which represented about 6,000 supermarkets nationwide, including Walmart, Commercial Mexicana, Chedraui, and Soriana, are where many of USA Rice's promotional activities are held in Mexico.

The USA Rice booth was prominently located near the high-traffic entrance within the USA pavilion, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Trade Office (ATO). During the three-day event, USA Rice chefs conducted rice cooking classes several times each day. These cooking classes served as a sample of our in-store promotions and were of great interest to the retailers.

Crowd pleasing cooking demo "The primary focus of our promotion efforts was to introduce the new American Rice logo to the retail industry and explain the benefits of purchasing U.S. grown rice," said Brian King, USA Rice's chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee. "There were several rice packers and wholesalers present at Expo ANTAD who expressed interest in purchasing U.S. rice and using the logo on their packaging." With more than 110 million consumers, Mexico continues to expand its taste for U.S. food products. The supermarket industry in Mexico has been particularly active, upgrading their store formats and imported selections along with major acquisitions making already strong performers even larger. USDA Report WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. all rice 2014/15 supply and use changes result in a 1.5 million cwt increase in ending stocks to 42.4 million, up 33 percent from the previous year. Long-grain ending stocks are increased 500,000 to 27.6 million, and combined medium- and short-grain ending stocks are increased 1 million to 12.5 million. All rice imports are raised 500,000 (all in long-grain) to 23.5 million as imports from Thailand were strong in February according to the U.S. Census Bureau trade data. All rice domestic and residual use is lowered 2 million cwt to 129 million with long-grain and combined medium- and short-grain each reduced 1 million to 98 million and 31 million, respectively. Partially offsetting the decrease in domestic and residual use is a 1 million cwt increase in all rice exports to 105 million (all in long-grain) as exports increased recently to Western Hemisphere markets. Long-grain exports are forecast at 73 million cwt, and combined medium- and short-grain exports at 32 million.

The decrease in 2014/15 all rice domestic and residual use is based primarily on total use implied from USDA's Rice Stocks report on March 31. USDA's March 1 rice stocks were higher than expected and above trade expectations. All rice March 1 stocks totaled 120.8 million cwt (rough-equivalent basis), up 24 percent from the previous year, and the highest since 2011.

Implied all rice domestic and residual use for December-February 2014/15 was down 8 percent from the previous market year, and 5 percent below the previous 4-year average.

The 2014/15 long-grain season-average price at the midpoint is projected at $12.30 per cwt, down 20 cents per cwt from a month ago and down $3.10 per cwt from last year. The all combined medium- and short-grain season-average price at the midpoint is forecast at $18.60 per cwt, up 10 cents per cwt from last month, but 60 cents per cwt below a year ago. The California medium- and short-grain rice price is raised slightly from last month and the Other States price is unchanged. The all rice price at the midpoint is projected at $14.20 per cwt, down 10 cents per cwt from last month, and $2.10 per cwt below 2013/14.

Global 2014/15 rice ending stocks are increased 900,000 tons as the decrease in use adds to a slight increase in supplies. Global consumption (includes residual) is lowered nearly 650,000 tons as projected use is lowered for Indonesia, Japan, and the United States, partially offset by increases for Pakistan and Thailand.

Total rice supplies in 2014/15 are increased 300,000 tons due to an increase in beginning stocks (+600,000) more than offsetting a reduction in production (-300,000). The rise in global beginning stocks is due primarily to increases for Japan, Pakistan, and Taiwan. The reduction in global 2014/15 rice production results mainly from decreases for Indonesia, Vietnam, and SubSaharan Africa, partially offset by an increase for Pakistan. Global rice exports for 2014/15 are lowered slightly due to reductions for Egypt, Japan, and Pakistan, partially offset by increases for Brazil, and the United States. Imports are lowered slightly for Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but raised for the United States.

Silent Shade Planting Co. uses 21 different software programs to help make sure the farming operation stays at the forefront of agricultural technology, according to Jeremy Jack, one of the partners in the 8,500-acre cotton, corn, soybean, rice and wheat farm.Running all those programs and trying to get them to communicate with each other is a challenge, but it’s one Jeremy Jack; his sister, Stacie Jack-Koger; and her husband, Trey Koger, are willing to take on for the sake of their operation near Belzoni, Miss.―When you think about it, if you’re early adopters you’re the first ones in the game,‖ says Jeremy Jack. ―You’re the ones who are going to reap the biggest rewards out of it. You’re also the ones with the biggest risks.‖Jeremy Jack’s comments came during a presentation at the National Conservation Systems Cotton and Rice Conference in Baton Rouge, La. He was one of more than 120 farmers, consultants, university Extension specialists and researchers and industry representatives who spoke during the two-day event that rotates between the North and South Deltas. ―These are what we call the hammers in our office toolbox,‖ said Jack, pointing to a slide. ―These are all the precision software programs that we’re using every day. These are actually owned by three or four of us. From the financial side to moving dirt to recordkeeping on crops to making our prescription maps, this is what we go through.‖The most troublesome for Jack is the Excel program, which he repeated three times in the list of the 21 programs he displayed. But the problem with all these programs is that none of them talk to each other,‖ he noted.―I went on our server, typed in xls and hit search to see how many excel files I have right now, how many we go through, how many we’ve used,‖ he said. ―1,250.

How much time does it take to do all these things; how much downtime and how slow are we moving toward integrating this information.‖Jack says all of the partners’ software enhancement efforts start with Global Positioning Systems or GPS. ―GPS is the foundation, not the roof. Don’t think that is the end or the cure-all. All those things I went through build off GPS.Currently, Silent Shade’s operators can perform a variety of digital tasks, including recordkeeping, monitoring, imagery, efficiency, tracking and ―everything with variable rate.‖Jack gave

The chopper was at IRRI from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, the employee shared.

Research in progress Scientists at IRRI updated the BMGF team on advances in research on climate-change-ready rice and varieties that promise to help solve micronutrient deficiencies.―We are thankful that the BMGF has come for updates on the food and nutrition security initiatives that they support,‖ said Robert Zeigler, Director General of IRRI.―The foundation is a staunch partner in applying the best of science so that people in the rice-eating world will not go hungry.‖The foundation has invested in IRRI’s research for Golden Rice, a genetically modified crop that is seen to help solve hunger and malnutrition in developing countries.

"It is hoped that Golden Rice will help improve the health of millions of children and adults across the Philippines and Bangladesh," the foundation said in a statement.Environmental groups oppose the GMO-developed rice, warning of its potential hazardous impact to the environment.The BMGF team was also shown experimental rice plots for the development of flood- and drought-tolerant rice. These varieties promise to improve the livelihoods of the world's poorest farmers by ensuring a good harvest despite weather and climate upsets.For instance, flood-tolerant rice are supposed to thrive even after more than 14 days underwater.

Non-tolerant rice normally die after just 4 days of submergence.
