U.S. dollar index was up +0.04% from the open today, when it traded at 79.228 at the close.

Euro was +0.03% higher today by the close, trading around 1.3807 by end of day, after trading between an intraday high of 1.3818 and low of 1.3775. The dollar was little changed today after slightly disappointing U.S. economic data. The market is focused on what the Fed will reveal on Wednesday.

Thai baht was weaker -0.16%, trading at 31.060 at the close of business.

Indian rupee was weaker -0.11% trading at 61.5250.

Brazilian real was +0.35% stronger than the open at today’s close, when it ended at 2.1797 reais per dollar.

Pakistan rupee was -0.15% weaker at the close, trading at 106.6250.

Vietnamese dong was -0.01% weaker, trading at 21100.

Mexican peso was -0.08% weaker today, when it traded at 12.8903 pesos per dollar by the close of business today.

Chinese yuan was weaker -0.04% at 6.0859.

Argentine peso was -0.10% weaker at 5.8906 pesos per dollar.

Oryza Afternoon Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Tumble as Grains Trigger Technical Sell Signal Oct 28, 2013

Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery settled 16 cents per cwt (about $4 per ton) lower at $15.260 per cwt (about $336 per ton). Rough rice futures closed sharply lower today as support provided by spread activity noted last week has clearly come to an end, leaving the market to fall under its own weight. A lack of fundamentally supportive news as well as a very bearish grain complex provided additional pressure on the market. The other grains finished sharply lower today; soybeans finished the day about 2.2% lower at $12.7125 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.4% lower at $6.8100 per bushel; and corn finished the day about 2.1% lower at $4.3175 per bushel.U.S. stocks nudged higher Monday, with the S&P 500 pushing to a fresh high, but gains were limited as investors digested a batch of mixed earnings reports and ahead of the Federal Reserve's policysetting meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average poked into positive territory. The Dow is within 1% of

hitting its all-time high. The S&P 500 set a new all-time high of 1,763.96. The Nasdaq also edged higher. All three averages are poised to close sharply higher for the month, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq up more than 4% each. Among key S&P sectors, financials led the decliners, while defensive areas such as consumer staples and utilities rose.

U.S. stock markets are currently trading up about 0.2%, gold is trading about 0.1% higher, crude oil is seen trading about 0.8% higher, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.2% higher at about 2:00pm Chicago time.Turning to the daily continuation chart of Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery, with the completion of the majority of the position rolling on the part of large traders finished we have moved our attention to the January contract. Today’s action saw the market technically break down, falling below the 20day moving average, noted at $15.340 per cwt (about $338 per ton), and positioning price action in negative territory. The lower Bollinger band now comes into play as the current price objective at $14.950 per cwt (about $330 per ton), however layers of support are noted around $15.250 per cwt (about $336 per ton) and again at the psychologically important $15.000 per cwt (about $331 per ton) level. Today’s price action is seen as a negative development for future price direction. The session’s trading range is noted as $15.250-$15.420 per cwt (about $336-$340 per ton).Friday, there were 983 contracts traded, down from 2,304 contracts traded on Thursday.

Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Friday decreased by 269 contracts to 9,088.

Dia de los Muertos Takes a Healthy Turn with Rice Replacing Sugar Skull Oct 28, 2013

Sugar skulls enjoy a long tradition in cultures that celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The holiday, which takes place October 31 through November 2, and is most widely celebrated in Mexico, honors friends and family members who have died. Dating back to an Aztec festival, Dia de los Muertos has evolved to incorporate elements of other traditions, such as All Saints Day. During this three day celebration, deceased loved ones can come back to visit those still alive. The holiday is not an entirely sad one, with many taking a celebratory approach to the deceased’s lives. Celebrants may visit graves of loved ones, leaving them gifts or offering prayers in their names. Some build private altars to honor those who have died, adorning them with their favorite foods, flowers, and candles. One of the

most popular decorations during Dia de Los Muertos is the sugar skull.The sugar skull dates as far back as the 18th century and is used to represent a deceased person. The skulls are placed on a gravestone or altar to honor him or her. They are usually bright and colorful, depicting a folk art style. Sometimes the sugar skulls are just for decoration, but sometimes they are eaten after the celebration.

If you’d like to take a healthier approach to the sugar skull this holiday, why not try using rice instead of sugar? This is a great activity/recipe to get the kids involved with, and it can be presented as a Halloween recipe instead if you prefer. Or forget the holiday aspect altogether, and just take this opportunity to get the children interested in healthy foods with a fun art project!

Cook the rice with water and cornstarch (tapioca starch or another starch will work, too – this is just to help it keep its shape).

The quantity of rice you should cook depends on how big of a skull you want to make, but a cup of rice is a good guideline (about 1.5 teaspoons of cornstarch to one cup of water). Shape the rice into a skull. The addition of the cornstarch should make this easier, but you’ll likely find a flat skull on a plate simpler to accomplish than a 3-D skull – not to say it can’t be done! The rest is limited only by your own imagination. Find a variety of vegetables that you can use to decorate it. Grape tomatoes, black olives, carrots, mushrooms, avocado, peas, and onions are great starting points, but don’t forget the possibility of bulking it up with lentils or beans; black or red lentils and black beans would be nice additions due to their contrasting color. Finally, use condiments like hot sauce for a last-minute splash of color. It’s best eaten soon after completion but can be refrigerated for a few hours.After you’re done admiring your handiwork (and you’ve snapped a few photos, of course), dig in! A much healthier alternative to a skull made out of sugar, and no hyperactive children as a result, either!

Taiwan Awards Tender for 10,034 Tons of U.S. Rice Oct 28, 2013

Taiwan awarded a contract to supply 10,034 tons of U.S. medium/short grain rice to a company in the U.S. for NT$20,744 per ton (about $704 per ton) on duty paid delivered (DPD) terms, according to the USDA. Overall five bidders participated in the tender. Delivery is expected by February 10, 2014.Taiwan has tendered twothirds of the 2013 U.S. rice Country Specific Quota (CSW). The remaining 22,000 tons under normal tender scheme is expected to be announced soon. India Basmati Rice Exports Likely to Increase 11% to 4 Million Tons in FY 2013-14 Oct 28, 2013

India’s basmati rice exports are likely to grow to around 4 million tons in the fiscal year 2013-14 (April – March), up around 11% from around 3.6 million tons exported in FY 2012-13, according to local sources.Traders in India say that better returns and government’s crop diversification program have helped boost basmati rice production in Punjab and Haryana, two main basmati rice producing states in India. India produced around 7.1 million tons of basmati rice in 2012-13, and some trade sources say that production is likely to increase by around 30% to around 9 million tons in 2013-14.However, basmati purchase prices are high this year due to high demand in the international market in the Middle East helped by a weak Indian currency. Traders say that they are already paying around Rs. 3,200 per quintal (about $523 per ton, using current exchange rates) of basmati paddy rice, up about 50% from last year’s Rs. 2,200 per quintal (about $410 per ton, using historical exchange rates). Prices are likely to increase in the coming weeks, say trade sources.

Thailand rice sellers lowered their quotes for parboiled rice and Hommali rice by about $5 per ton each to about $435 - $445 per ton and $1,075 - $1,085 per ton respectively today. Vietnam rice sellers lowered their quotes for 5% broken rice and 25% broken rice by about $5 per ton each to about $390 - $400 per ton and $360 - $370 per ton respectively, and increased their quotes for Jasmine rice by about $20 per ton to about $565 - $575 per ton. Indian rice sellers increased their quotes for 5% broken rice by about $5 per ton to about $415 - $425 per ton. Pakistan rice sellers lowered their quotes for 5% broken rice by about $370 - $380 per ton.
