ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th May, 2018 ) :Punjab government has launched Crop Insurance Scheme (Takaful) to protect the income of farmers against unfavorable circumstances. According to Punjab Agriculture Department, in the first phase , the scheme has been launched in Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Lodhran and Rahim Yar Khan for the ongoing Kharif season 2018.

Under this scheme, 100 percent subsidy on Insurance Premium for land owners up to 5 acres while 50 percent subsidy on Insurance Premium for land owners from 5 Acre to 25 Acres will be borne by the government. This scheme is applicable during its first phase on cotton and Rice fields, Radio pakistan reported. In the second phase, Insurance (Takaful) will be applicable on more crops including Sugarcane, Maize, Wheat, Orchards and Vegetables. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) said the provitamin-A biofortified rice variety has completed its food safety evaluation from the USFDA, its third international nod after approvals from the Food Standards Australia New Zealand and Health Canada earlier this year.

MANILA, Philippines — The controversial Golden Rice, which is still being pushed in the Philippines, got a positive evaluation from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), concurring the variety‘s safety and nutrition. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) said the provitamin-A biofortified rice variety has completed its food safety evaluation from the USFDA, its third international nod after approvals from the Food Standards Australia New Zealand and Health Canada earlier this year. ―Each regulatory application that Golden Rice completes with national regulatory agencies takes us one step closer to bringing it to the people who need it the most,‖ IRRI director general Matthew Morell said. ―The rigorous safety standards observed by the US FDA and other agencies provide a model for decision-making in all countries wishing to reap the benefits of Golden Rice,‖ he added. The Philippines, through the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) continue to develop high-yielding inbred local rice varieties with the beta-carotene producing GR2E Golden Rice trait. Currently, Golden Rice is undergoing review for field trial and food, feed, and/or processing applications in the country. ―Our research is fully compliant with the country‘s stringent regulatory procedures, and we are very optimistic that our application will be approved. Regulatory approval is a necessary step in the research process, as it enables us to continue research to ensure Golden Rice is safe and efficacious,‖ PhilRice Healthier Rice Project leader Reynante Ordonio said. ―Once Golden Rice is approved for release, a sustainable delivery program will ensure that it is acceptable and accessible to those most in need,‖ he added.Golden Rice aims to address vitamin A deficiency which remains a persistent public health issue in the Philippines. ―While current interventions such as proper feeding practices and supplementation have had real successes in improving the nutritional status of our population, millions continue to suffer from these preventable micronutrient deficiencies. Food-based approaches like Golden Rice can help improve nutrition for those who have limited access to diverse diets,‖ Ordonio said. Golden Rice is intended as a complementary, food-based solution to existing nutritional interventions, such as diet diversification and oral supplementation. The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has developed 23 new crop varieties. These include six varieties of rice, four varieties of vegetables, five varieties of nutmeg, two varieties each of cardamom, ginger and yard long bean and one variety each of pepper, tapioca, salad cucumber, sambar melon, garcinia, and plumbago. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will release the new varieties at a function at the KAU on Saturday.

Rice varieties The rice varieties are Pournami, Manu Ratna, Lavanya, Jyothsana, Supriya and Akshaya. Pournami is a semi-tall, medium-duration (115-120 days) non-lodging medium bold red-kernelled variety developed by S. Leena Kumary and her team at the Rice Research Station (RRS), Moncompu. Manu Ratna, developed at the Agriculture Research Station (ARS), Mannuthy, by A. Latha, is tolerant to stem borer, leaf folder and whorl maggot, and suitable for normal wetlands of Kerala, including kole land. Lavanya and Jyotsna are varieties suitable for the coastal saline agro ecosystem, developed at the RRS, Vyttila, by a team led by K.S. Shylaraj. Supriya is a tall and latematuring (140 days) variety developed at RARS (Regional Agriculture Research Station), Pattambi, by K. Kartthikeyan and team. It is moderately resistant to stem borer, leaf folder, whorl maggot and blast. Akshaya, also from RARS, Pattambi, developed by a team led by Ilangovan, is a long-duration variety resistant to stem borer, leaf folder, whorl maggot and blast disease. BTC Agriculture Department sets eyes on black rice and oil palm tree cultivation

Our Correspondent Kokrajhar, May 25: The Department of Agriculture, BTC, has set a new target to boost black rice and oil palm tree cultivation within the council area. The BTC EM of Agriculture, Ansumwi Khunggur Boro on Wednesday visited the home of Upen Rabha along the Meghalaya border in Goalpara district. He is the person who first introduced black rice in Assam. Boro discussed for long with Rabha on the cultivation of black rice and its demand in markets. He discussed with Rabha regarding the plan of his department to introduce black rice in Koklabari agriculture farm in Baksa and Lalphool agriculture farm in Udalguri district and to encourage the farmers of the region. He asked Rabha, who has received many State and national-level awards for being the best progressive farmer in the State, to supply adequate seeds of black rice from next year. They arrived at a decision for supplying the black rice. The black rice is also called as Upen Rabha variety. While talking to this reporter, Rabha said he saw the black rice while participating in an agriculture exhibition in Gujarat and started cultivation in 2011. He said he faced a lot of hardships to introduce the new variety due to his lack of knowledge and experience but finally tasted success. He said he cultivated black rice in

over 2,000 bighas of land involving his group of societies. Rabha was also one of the members of the CM‘s Vietnam tour recently. The BTC EM of Agriculture also called on the EM of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council Jiban Rabha and held discussion in the Secretariat conference hall on the cultivation of oil palm tree. The meeting was also attended by agriculture officials and progressive planters of oil palm. In the course of discussion, the EM of RHAC, Jiban Rabha said the council had already started the oil palm tree in certain places involving unemployed youths. Since there is little scope to supply the oil palm fruits due to lack of industry, he said the council had inked an agreement with a company of oil palm industry for setting up of new unit in the council and marketing. He also said the new unit would be constructed very soon and once it was completed, many planters would come forward for this cultivation. Meanwhile, BTC EM Ansumwi Khunggur Boro, who had visited Mizoram to study the cultivation of oil palm tree and its industry run by Godrej company in 2016, shared his vision for plantation of oil palm tree within BTC region. He said his department was looking forward for industry and marketing before starting cultivation of oil palm tree. He said the department would look into the start of oil palm tree in BTC as it would now be easy to supply the product in the factory to be set up in Rabha Hasong. Boro also visited the plantation and seedling sites. Later, talking to this reporter, he said the BTC had lot of potential for plantation of oil palm tree for sustainable economic development of farmers. He said his department would further study the new venture for cultivation of oil palm tree and black rice by involving technical experts and researchers.

Global Warming Grows Less Nutritious Rice Global warming could bring a serious problem for the two billion people on the planet who depend on one grain for their staple diet: less nutritious rice to sustain them. Scientists have found that rice grown at higher levels of carbon dioxide has an overall lower nutritional value. The grain contains lower levels of protein, and iron and zinc – metals vital for health in trace form – and also consistent declines in vitamin B. This finding is not based on computer simulation of a plant‘s response to notionally higher atmospheric levels of the greenhouse gas CO2, nor on laboratory studies under glass and in artificial conditions. It is based on open air field trials. That is, extra carbon dioxide is piped to the plants to mimic the ratios expected at the end of the century as ever more people burn ever greater quantities of fossil fuels. And it has been tested in many locations in rice-growing countries over many years.

The finding remains true – although at different levels of impact – for the 18 varieties or hybrids of rice tested so far. Ten nations depend upon rice for daily food supplies. The people most likely to feel the consequences of reduced nutritional support – and these include impaired cognitive development, a feebler immune system, obesity and diabetes – are likely to be those who are poorest. The researchers estimate that 600 million people for whom rice provides more than half their daily diet could be affected. Scientists from China, Japan, the US and Australia report in the journal Science Advances that they began their research, using what they call the technique of free air carbon dioxide enrichment, in 1998, to recreate what they expect to be the conditions under which farmers will grow crops a few decades from now. They found on average that the test rice had 10% less protein, 8% less iron and 5.1% less zinc compared with rice grown by farmers under existing conditions. There were also declines of 17% in the vitamins B1 (thiamine) and of more than 16% in vitamin B2 (riboflavin). Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid levels, were down more than 12%. Folate or vitamin B9 levels were down 30%. ―People say more CO2 is more plant food – and it is. But how plants respond to that sudden increase in food will impact human health as well, from nutritional deficits, to ethnopharmacology, to seasonal pollen allergies – in ways we don‘t yet understand,‖ said Lewis Ziska, a plant physiologist with the US Department of Agriculture research service, one of the authors. Hungry billion Up to a billion people in the world are what bureaucrats politely call ―food insecure.‖ There has already been concern about the impact of higher levels of carbon dioxide on protein in potatoes, maize and other cereals. As global temperatures rise in response to ever greater levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, harvests of all the staple cereals could in any case decline – sometimes as a response to ever wilder extremes of heat, rain and windstorm – by between 20 and 40%. But so far, there has been little research on the impact of climate change on the nutritional qualities of each staple.

But the export graph went downward to 15,000 metric tonne of basmati in 2014-15. He said that Pakistan is pursuing an application for the inclusion of Pakistan in the list of importers of rice maintained by the Central Tendering Committee of Qatar. The CTC was established in 1976 in Doha and is responsible for all government related bids, contract awards and contract processes. The REAP chairman also urged the Pakistan commerce ministry to utilize all available diplomatic channels in this regard. The recent visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif kindled the potentials of increase of trade with Pakistan to $5 billion by 2012. Pakistan is in negotiation to enhance export of meat, fruits, textile, surgical items, sports goods, gems and jewellery in addition to rice. The key items imported from Iran to Pakistan include: iron ore, iron scrap, dates, detergents, transformers, chemicals, bitumen, polyethylene, propylene, etc. Iran is the second-largest market of Basmati rice of Pakistan, ranking after Iraq. There is a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), which governs Pakistan Iran trade; this PTA has been operational since 2006. According to a short profile of Iran prepared by Pakistan Business Council, ―of the top 50 items exported by Pakistan to Iran, only 12 items (24%) have a preferential tariff under the PTA‖ and ―of the top 50 Iranian exports to Pakistan 22 items

Although there had been deficiency in the figures reported by both the countries relating to the inter-states trade in 2014 yet fact remains that both the countries remained engaged heavily with each other in terms of bilateral trade relations. One of the major factors contributing towards losing Iranian Market by Pakistan included lack of payment mechanism in the wake of international sanctions on Iran. The absence of banking channels had rendered Pakistan-Iran PTA virtually dysfunctional. After the removal of UN sanctions on Iran in 2016, it was expected that the Iranian economy would be reopened for international trade and an influx of Iranian assets frozen overseas in the region of $100 to $150 billion. Like European companies and the countries worldwide, Pakistan was also looking forward to greater trade and the early completion of the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline, which was hampered by the pervious sanctions on Iran. Apart from commercial interactions with Iran, Pakistan shares religious linkage with Iran. According to a report, an estimated 150,000 pilgrims had gone to Iran and Iraq from Pakistan in 2017. With each passing year the number of pilgrims is also increasing. Back in 2014, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) started twice a week flight operations to Mashad, Iran, by launching direct flights twice a week carrying pilgrims to the holy places in Iran. Recent announcement of US President to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), would have far reaching effects not only on Iran but indirectly on Pakistan being neighbour as well. The Trump Administration has re-imposed sweeping sanctions against Iran with immediate effect. After November 4, 2018, the US would again put sanctions on Iran‘s oil exports, shipping, port operations, central bank dealings, insurance and rest of its energy sectors. As we have witnessed a downfall of bilateral trade between two countries post 2010 international sanctions on Iran, Pakistan would once again be experiencing the same situation. On the contrary India sustained the effects of the sanctions on Iran vis-à-vis bilateral trade through putting a workable payment mechanism in place. While Pakistan‘s trade with Iran took a nose down drive during this period, the trade between India flourished during the period of sanctions. Apart from negative effects on the economy and trade with Iran, Pakistan would be facing other multiple challenges including that of visit of pilgrims from Pakistan to Iran. The re-imposed sanctions on Iran would once again give rise to the emergence of black market/economy as the foreign exchange would fly between both the countries without any control depleting the foreign exchange reserves of the country. Iran had raised its concerns before me vis-à-vis across border attacks on its security forces of Pakistan. I as Interior Minister had series of meetings with the Iranian Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khomeini, President, Interior and Foreign Ministers to neutralise the tension between both the countries. However, recently these relations came under pressure when Indian Agent Kulbhushan Yadav was detected to have been operating from Iran. However, with the announcement of President Trump to unilaterally withdraw from the agreement, Pakistan has once again been placed in a critical situation vis-à-vis its commercial as well as bilateral relations. The multi-million dollars Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline would once again be in jeopardise, which has already been delayed considerably. In fact USA has divided the world into pro and anti USA blocks. Similarly, the Muslim world has also been divided on the issues relating to Middle East and Arab world. The war that USA started in Iraq on the false allegations of WMD (weapons of mass destruction) ultimately engulfed the whole region and resultantly both allies of Iran and Saudi Arabia confronted each other in the region. It was, in fact, a big mistake on the part of USA to initiate war in Iraq. I fear that USA may create an ugly situation against Pakistan in collaboration with India and Afghanistan in order to cover up its failures in Afghanistan. The recent statements of President Trump against Pakistan were in fact repetition of which India had been harping on. It is high time for Pakistan to formulate a comprehensive policy to confront the fall outs of the US sanctions on Iran on Pakistan. I feel that we need to take some important measures urgently in which our Government should try to evaluate the adverse effects of sanctions on Pakistan and Our Ambassadors in Iran and USA should be summoned to work out a strategy to handle this issue. The recent Indo-Pak border flare-up here has caused great consternation among the farming community cultivating world famous ‗basmati rice‘ in Kandi belt of Jammu province.The border villagers said this was the most suitable time for sowing the paddy seeds. ―A delay of even a few days in the sowing can lead either to a low yield or there can be just no crop,‖ said Hans Raj of Rasampur village, Ramghar sector, Samba. From Kathua to chicken neck area in Akhnoor, India shares 198-kilometer long border with Pakistan in Jammu province, where nearly 1 lakh hectare agriculture land, known for growing the world-class basmati, ―directly falls within the Pakistan shelling range.‖Even as the border is calm for last two days, the intense firing between the two sides has claimed 12 lives this month so far alone from this side. Besides, more than 300 have been injured since January. ―This has scared the farming community and kept them from carrying out the normal agricultural activities in their fields,‖ the farmers said.The border shelling has triggered mass migration in the villages along the border affected by the shelling, and the farmers in these villages have been shifted to relief camps and shelter homes. ―These farmers are frightened to return their villages,‖ they said. The local administration has closed the schools in the vulnerable villages as precautionary measure till May 26.―Most of the border dwellers are in farming. There is just a week left for sowing the seeds but in situation like this, no one is willing to risk their lives,‖ Raj said.―Pakistan habitually resorts to border shelling to harass the people. Earlier, they fired shells during harvesting season too, but somehow we managed to harvest the wheat crop then,‖ said Nischal Choudhary of border village Arnia. He said before sowing the paddy seeds, ―there is a process to raise the seedlings, but most of the villagers are unable to get their fields ready to raise them.‖ The farmers also fear unavailability of non local laborers. ―Who will work in our fields near zero line, if situation continues to be same in the coming days? He referred to the meeting of REAP delegation led by Chairman REAP during last month, wherein the same matter was also discussed and Governor State Bank of Pakistan has given assurance to allow Islamic banks to extend this facility in near future. Rafique informed that 90 percent of REAP Members belong to Corporate Class and are working on large scale. Here's another reason to take climate change seriously. Global warming is slowly taking a toll on the nutritional value of some of our basic foods and numbers by which it can affect our wellbeing are startling. According to a latest study, as carbon dioxide rises due to the burning of fossil fuels, rice is expected to lose some of its protein and vitamin content, which could put millions at risk of malnutrition. The report published in journal Science Advances, revealed that the changes could be particularly severe in the southeast Asia. Where rice forms a staple part of daily diet. Through the study researchers aimed at showing how the global warming, climate change and particularly greenhouse gases -- carbon dioxide -- can have an impact on the nutrient content of the plants that people consume.

The climate change may have detrimental effect on the health of rice-consuming countries. Since 70% of the calories and most of the nutrients come from rice, efforts must be taken to prevent growth stunting repercussions that could arise due to protein and vitamin deficiencies. Scientists revealed that the nutrient deficiency may also lead to birth defects, diarrhea, infections and early death. One of the other highlighting feature of the report is that countries at most risk include those that consume the most rice and have the lowest gross domestic product (GDP), such as Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, Drewnowksi said. The findings were based on field studies in Japan and China, simulating the amount of CO2 expected in the atmosphere by the second half of this century -- 568 to 590 parts per million. Current levels are just over 400 ppm. As part of the experiments, 18 different strains of rice were planted in open fields, surrounded in certain areas by 56-foot wide (17-meter) octagons of plastic piping that released extra CO2. This technique was especially employed to test the effects of higher carbon dioxide concentrations on plants growing in the same conditions that farmers are expected grow some decades later in this century. The findings revealed that Vitamin B1 (thiamine) levels decreased by 17.1%; average Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) by 16.6%; average Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) by 12.7%; and average Vitamin B9 (folate) by 30.3%.

It was observed that on average, protein content fell 10.3%, iron dropped eight percent, while the zinc content was reduced by 5.1%, compared to rice grown today under current CO2 conditions. Vitamin B6 and calcium were unaffected, and vitamin E levels rose for most strains. According to the study a large part of the changes observed has to do with how higher CO2 affects the plant's structure and growth, increasing carbohydrate content and reducing protein and minerals. With higher exposure to CO2, the exposure to nitrogen would reduce considerably too, which may further affect the crop's vitamin content. It must be noted that not all rice varieties saw the same drops in nutritional value. Which points to a ray of hope that future research could help farmers develop strains of rice that would be more resilient to atmospheric changes.

Britain is helping breed a new generation of ―super-crops‖ not only resistant to climate change, pests and disease but also fortified with vital vitamins and minerals.The initiative could save the lives of hundreds of thousands of children who die each year from poor nutrition in developing countries as well as supplementing diets in the west. The Department for International Development (Dfid) has quietly invested more than £100m into breeding the new generation of super-crops which now stand poised to create what experts are calling a ―second green revolution‖. The crops include iron-rich beans that can withstand a 4 degree Celsius jump in temperature, ―scuba‖ rice that comes back to life after two weeks underwater in flooded fields and droughttolerant maize rich in vitamin A. If we can reach our target of one billion, then potentially it is the next biggest thing,‖ said Howarth Bouis, a US economist whose organisation HarvestPlus has received £87.4m from Dfid to breed and distribute crop varieties fortified with Vitamin A, Iron and Zinc. About 30 million people – around six million households – have so far benefited from the new crops, primarily in Africa, but the aim is to reach one billion by 2030. A further six million farmers in Asia are using scuba rice but the aim is 18 million by 2028. Scientists believe that if they achieve the one billion target they will effectively halve the world‘s estimated two billion suffering from what is known as ―hidden hunger‖ or micronutrient malnutrition. The first green revolution, which occurred in the early to mid 1900s, won its instigator Norman Borlaug a Nobel Peace Prize and spawned disease-resistant, high-yielding wheat strains which are credited with saving 250 million lives worldwide. Agricultural breakthroughs trump medical innovations such as antibiotics and vaccinations for lives saved historically because food is so central to life. It is estimated one million children a year die from micronutrient malnutrition which leaves them prone to stunted growth, poor vision and illnesses and diseases that have the potential to become worldwide epidemics.

The new super-crops not only replicate the traits of the first green revolution in having higher yields but also have been – or are being – cross-bred further to incorporate genes that protect from disease, pests, floods, drought and heat. ―Our centres are developing climate adaptive crops. Farmers like them not only because they are climate tolerant but also high yielding. We just need to get them into mainstream markets and piggy back on them with our vitamin strains,‖ said Bouis.

For the ―heat-beater‖ beans, a staple in Rwanda where the fortified varieties provide up to half a person‘s recommended daily intake of iron, scientists in Colombia trawled a gene bank of 36,000 samples to find a Mexican strain capable of withstanding temperature rises expected over the next century due to climate change. It will not only safeguard the 50 per cent of land that would have been lost to farmers due to higher temperatures but could also open up new markets in tropical areas for the beans. ―Even if they can only handle a three-degree rise, that would still limit the land lost to climate change to about 5 per cent,‖ said Steve Beebe, head of bean breeding for the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture. Scuba rice was created after scientists tracked down an Indian rice variety with a gene, SUB1A, which was activated when the plant was submerged. It was crossed with India‘s top-selling, high-yielding Swarni rice to counter the annual loss of 4m tonnes of rice to flooding in India and Bangladesh, enough to feed 30m people. Dr Uma Shankar Singh, a director of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), said: ―Sustaining productivity is the most important factor and we now have six million farmers cultivating 3 million hectares. At minimum it is adding 3 million tonnes of rice. We have also developed SUB1 varieties with salt, drought and stagnant flooding tolerance.‖

Dfid is now the biggest funder of HarvestPlus, whose work into fortified crops was started in 2003. Nottingham University professor Martin Broadley, a research fellow with Dfid, said the genesis of the programme came from research showing how expensive and inefficient it was to deliver supplements or fortified processed foods like bread to rural areas. ―Upfront investment in breeding iron, vitamin A and zinc dense crops is the most cost-effective way to improve nutrition compared with other approaches,‖ he said. According to the World Health Organization, every $10-$15 invested in, for example, the vitamin A rich orange sweet potato produces one extra year of good quality life per individual.

HarvestPlus deliberately spurned genetic modification in favour of natural methods. ―If we‘d invested our money in GM, they could have been left sitting on the shelf. Conventional breeding is not as powerful a science but at least we can do a lot of good with it without the blockages you have with transgenics,‖ said Bouis. Government agriculture centres and NGOs are supporting the distribution of the seeds. As it seeks to reach 1 billion, Dfid has put in an extra £4 million to get private seed producers to take up the ―super-crops‖ and achieve the necessary increase in uptake. The roll-out of the seeds has been supported by promotions including a radio soap opera, My Children, in Uganda to advance the orange sweet potato, a rap song by Rwandan musicians to encourage use of iron-rich beans and Yellow Cassava, a Nollywood (Nigerian Hollywood) film highlighting the nutritional benefits of the vitamin A rich crop.

Uganda is trialling a ―golden banana‖ high in vitamin A created by Australia‘s Queensland University of Technology by inserting a gene from a Papua New Guinea banana into the commercially-successful Cavendish banana. It is named after William Cavendish, the sixth Duke of Devonshire, a passionate horticulturalist who developed it on his Derbyshire estate in the 19th century. Public and political scepticism, however, remains a major hurdle for GM. The salutary lesson on this is ―golden rice‖, a GM strain engineered to boost vitamin A. KAU develops high-yielding crop varieties STAFF REPORTER THRISSUR, MAY 25, 2018 17:56 IST

The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has developed 23 new crop varieties.These include six varieties of rice, four varieties of vegetable crops, five varieties of nutmeg, two varieties each of cardamom, ginger and yard long bean and one variety each of pepper, tapioca, salad, cucumber, sambar

melon, garcinia and plumbago. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will release the new varieties at a function at the KAU on Saturday.

Rice varieties The rice varieties are Pournami, Manu Ratna, Lavanya, Jyothsana, Supriya and Akshaya. Pournami is a semi tall, medium duration (115-120 days) nonlodging medium bold red kernelled variety developed by S. Leena Kumary and her team at the Rice Research Station (RRS), Moncompu. Manuratna, developed at the Agriculture Research Station, Mannuthy by A. Latha, is tolerant to stem borer, leaf folder and whorl maggot, suitable for normal wetlands of Kerala, including kole land. Lavanya and Jyotsna are varieties suitable for coastal saline agro ecosystem, developed at RRS, Vyttila, by a team led by K.S.Shylaraj. Supriya is a tall and late maturing (140 days) variety developed at RARS(Regional Agriculture Research Station), Pattambi, by K. Kartthikeyan and team. It is moderately resistant to stem borer, leaf folder, whorl maggot and blast. Akshaya, also from RARS, Pattambi, developed by team led by Ilangovan, is a long-duration variety resistant to stem borer, leaf folder, whorl maggot and blast disease. Both Pattambi varieties are suitable for irrigated or rainfed wet lands. Vegetables The culinary melon Vishal, developed by I. Sreelatha Kumary and colleagues at CoA, Vellayani, is suitable for warm humid tropics of Kerala. The seedless cucumber hybrid KPCH-1 is parthenocarpic and suitable for poly house cultivation. The early maturing variety was developed by T. Pradeep Kumar at CoH, Vellanikkara. Manjari, the yard long bean variety developed by Manoj Sebastian and team at RARS, Kumarakom, is ideal for intercropping. Mithra, the other yard long variety was developed at ARS, Tiruvalla by Beena Thomas and colleagues. The tapioca variety Uthama developed by Sajeena A. and team at ARS, Tiruvalla, has cylindrical tubers with light brown skin and white flesh. Nithya, the garcinia variety from RARS, Kumarakom, is suitable for loamy and laterite soils.

Spices The cardomom varieties PV 3 and PV 5 were developed at CRS, Pampadumpara by teams led by Dhanya M.K. and Maya T. respectively. PV3 is a Malabar type and tolerant to drought and moderately tolerant to capsule borer. PV5, a vazhukka type is tolerant to thrips and suitable for cardamom growing tracts of Kerala.Panniyur 9, developed by Ajith M. and team, is the latest in the famous Panniyur variety chain from PRS, Panniyur, is tolerant to quick wilt and drought. The ginger varieties Chandra and Chithra were developed by scientists at CoH, Vellanikkara. Both are suitable for moist humus rich soils. Nutmeg varieties Pullan, Kochukudy, Mundathanam, Poothara and Punnathanam are clonal selections from farmers‘ fields in Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts identified by N.
