Thailand Plans to Sell 200,000 Tons of Rice Through AFET on April 23, 2014 Apr 22, 2014

The Thailand government is planning to sell 200,000 tons of rice through the Agricultural Futures Exchange of Thailand (AFET) on April 23, 2014, according to local sources.The government has sold 550,000 tons of rice in the last eight auctions through the AFET, generating about 7 billion baht (around $217 million) in revenue, according to the Commerce Ministry. The Ministry said that most of the 5% white rice stocks have been sold at 12 baht per kilogram (around $372 per ton).Exporters are concerned of falling rice prices due to excessive selling by the government.

The Commerce Ministry sold over one million tons of rice in March and is planning to sell about one million tons of rice, raising about 8 - 10 billion baht (around $248 - $310 million) every month. However, local sources say that the Commerce Ministry is planning to keep the price of domestic rice stable by not selling rice stocks at low prices, particularly because the rice pledging scheme is temporarily shelved.The government is under pressure to raise about 90 billion baht (around $2.8 billion) to make overdue payments to the farmers, of which, nearly 2-3 billion baht (around $62 - $93 million) are to be paid to farmers who pledged rice from the 2013-14 main crop. The Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) said the government needs to evaluate other options for raising funds other than selling its rice stocks, as the amount raised through rice sales would be insufficient to make the overdue payments to farmers as well as repay the 20 billion baht (around $620 million) to the central budget by May 31, 2014.

Rice Consumption Growth in Spain Nearly Flat This Year Apr 22, 2014

Rice consumption in Spain is higher this year compared to last year, but only because of growing population, according to monthly statistical analysis published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, referring to data collected in March 2014.In 2013 Spain’s domestic rice consumption reached 187,400 tons, up 1.5% from 184,600 tons in 2012. Per capita consumption in Spain in 2013 was fixed at 4.1 kgs. Total value of retail sales increased just 0.1%, passing from 161 million euros (about $222.2 millions) to 161.1 million euros (about $222.3 millions).

The average price for Spanish Japonica paddy rice was fixed at 274.05 euros (about $ 378.3) per ton in March, up 2.3 euros (about $3.1) per ton from average January quotations, but down 4.97 euros (about $6.8) per ton on February 2013. The latest quotations for paddy rice fixed at Valencia exchange reach 282.5 euros (about $ 389.9) per ton on April 6, showing an increase on the previous month.As for milled rice, at the Valencia exchange it was shown at 535 euros (about $ 738.5) per ton, and at the Tarragona exchange at 550 euros (about $759.2) per ton on April 6.The general trend of prices, compared to former trade year, shows a slower start at the beginning of the crop year, in the autumn, and a swift increase of prices at beginning of this calendar year, and then keeping an even pace in the latest weeks.

Oryza Rice Currency Analysis for Today – Currencies Little Changed Apr 22, 2014

U.S. dollar index was down -0.06% from the open today, when it traded at 79.894 at the close.

Euro was stronger +0.09% by the close, trading around 1.3805 by end of day, after trading between an intraday high of 1.3825 and low of 1.3785.

Thai baht was weaker -0.23%, trading at 32.315 at the close of business.

Indian rupee was weaker -0.29% at 60.7675.

Brazilian real was weaker -0.25% at the close of trading today, trading at 2.2423 reais per dollar.

Pakistan rupee was -0.33% weaker at 98.1005.

Vietnamese dong was unchanged at 21098.

Mexican peso was weaker -0.21% today, when it traded at 13.0576 pesos per dollar by the close of business.

Chinese yuan was weaker -0.15%, trading at 6.2370.

Argentine peso was stronger +0.32% at 8.0013 pesos per dollar.

The U.S. cash market was unchanged today amid limited demand and very little selling interest as farmers attempt to get their crops in the ground.As of today, old crop offers remain unchanged near $15.55 per cwt fob farm (about $343 per ton) for nearby shipment however most farmers are still looking to net at least $16.11 per cwt fob farm (about $355 per ton). Old crop bids from larger mills held steady around $14.95 per cwt (about $330 per ton) for April-May delivery while bids for exporters were unchanged near $15.40-$15.65 per cwt (about $340-$345 per ton), for the same delivery period, and while bids from smaller mills generated zero interest there were reports of paddy trading around $15.65 per cwt(about $345 per ton) for prompt delivery. Oryza Afternoon Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures Settle Unchanged as Market Finds Momentary Support; Soy Continues to Slide While Wheat and Corn Recover Apr 22, 2014

Chicago rough rice futures for May delivery settled unchanged at $15.190 per cwt (about $335 per ton). After spending the session flat to slightly lower rough rice futures finished the day unchanged as the market appears to be taking a bit of a break following steep losses sustained late last week and again yesterday. Despite the recent negative turn in technical indicators prices are likely finding near-term support from the lower Bollinger band, which is currently noted at $15.180 per cwt (about $335 per ton), as the market has recently fallen so quickly. Some traders expect prices to remain trapped in a sideways trading pattern as the market “rests” and form a bearish continuation pattern before moving lower.

The other grains finished the day with mixed results as soy products remained under pressure but corn and wheat attempt to recover following yesterday’s steep losses; soybeans closed about 1.3% lower at $14.7975 per bushel; wheat finished about 0.7% higher at $6.7300 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 1.6% higher at $4.9625 per bushel.U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 extending its longest winning run since October, as investors considered earnings from companies. Stocks advanced further after data had existing home sales hitting 4.59m in Mar, versus a 4.55m estimate. After a 116-point jump, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was more recently up 106.16 points, or 0.6%, to 16,555.41.

The Dow Transports rose to an intraday record. The S&P 500 advanced 12.49 points, or 0.7%, to 1,884.38, with health care the best performing of its sectors and energy falling the most. The Nasdaq rose 48.45 points, or 1.2%, to 4,169.10. Gold is trading about 0.5% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 1.7% lower, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.1% lower at about 1:00pm Chicago time.Monday, there were 1,980 contracts traded, up from 928 contracts traded on Thursday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Monday decreased by 47 contracts to 8,371.

The next lowest offer was also for Thailand rice at $482.60 per ton; Vietnam rice was offered lowest at $599.50 per ton ciffo; Uruguayan rice was offered lowest at $711 per ton ciffo; and U.S. rice was offered lowest at $714.50 per ton ciffo.No offers were made from Argentina or Brazil.

IRRI Rice Research Project Sustains 150 Crops in 52 Years Apr 22, 2014

The Long-Term Continuous Cropping Experiment (LTCCE) by the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has sustained 150 crops in 52 years.IRRI says the project is the longest-running rice experiment in the world and began in 1962 to test the feasibility and sustainability of intensive rice cultivation with up to three crops per year. The ongoing project aims to find out rice production patterns under changing climatic conditions without adversely affecting the soil and the productivity of a rice ecosystem.Scientists say they have not used any crop residues and organic fertilizers in the LTCCE experiment and have ensured that soil fertility did not decline due to the project. Instead to get higher yields, scientists used high-yielding rice varieties that are pest- and disease- resistant.

IRRI says that the experiment shows that proper application of fertilizer, sufficient irrigation water, use of modern high-yielding rice varieties and good crop management practices are essential for sustainable rice production. “This living field laboratory will enable scientists to identify and solve potential constraints in intensive rice cultivation before they appear in farmers’ fields. It will continue in the future to provide insight for sustaining the productivity of rice in a changing climate,” says an IRRI scientist."The implications of this are enormous, especially as intensive cropping becomes inevitable when more than half of the world's population or over 3.5 billion people eat rice as their staple food," the IRRI scientist adds.

Rice scientists at the Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), India, have developed three new highyielding rice varieties, which can be grown to boost yields in water-scarce areas as well.The new varieties - CR Dhan 205, CR Dhan 306 and CRR 451 - have been field tested for over three years in different parts of the country and under different climatic conditions, according to local sources. According to the CRRI Director, CR Dhan 205 is suitable for the states of Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat, which have irrigation problems, and can yield around 5.3 to 5.8 tons per hectare. He says that the yield could go up to 8 tons per hectare under favorable conditions. CR Dhan 205 takes 110 days to mature and can sustain strong winds as well, CRRI says.CR Dhan 306 matures in 125 days and can yield 6 tons per hectare. This variety is recommended for irrigated areas of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Puducherry, according to the CRRI Director. CRR 451 matures in 95 days and yields up to 3.5 to tons per hectare. The CRRI Director says that this variety is best suited for Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, and that the variety is resistant to leaf blast disease and tolerant to drought-like situation.According to the USDA, the average rice yield in India stands at around 3.6 tons per hectare, down about 18% from the average global rice yield of around 4.4 tons per hectare.

Vietnam rice sellers increased their quotes for 100% broken rice by about $5 per ton to about $335 - $345 per ton today. Other Asia rice quotes showed mixed trends.

5% Broken Rice Thai 5% rice (of new crop) is quoted around $375 - $385 per ton, down about $5 per ton from yesterday and about $10 per ton discount to Viet 5% rice shown around $385 - $395 per ton.

Indian 5% rice is quoted around $420 - $430 per ton, about a $10 per ton premium over Pak 5% rice quoted around $410 - $420 per ton, up about $10 per ton from yesterday.

25% Broken Rice Thai 25% rice of the old crop is quoted about $340 - $350 per ton, down about $5 per ton from yesterday and about a $15 per ton discount to Viet 25% rice shown around $355 - $365 per ton.

Oryza Overnight Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures and Other Grains Gain Apr 22, 2014

Chicago rough rice futures for May delivery are currently paused 3.5 cents per cwt (about $1 per ton) higher overnight at $15.225 per cwt (about $336 per ton) as of 8:00am Chicago time. The other grains are seen higher this morning ahead of floor trading in Chicago: soybeans are currently seen about 0.4% higher, wheat was paused about 0.5% higher, and corn is noted about 0.8% higher. U.S. stock index futures pointed to a steady to slightly higher open on Tuesday. Overall, 148 S&P 500 companies (around a third of the index's market capitalization) and 11 Dow components are scheduled to have reported earnings by the end of this week. harmaceutical stocks will likely attract interest on Tuesday, as the industry appeared swept up in a wave of mergers and acquisitions. Tuesday's non-corporate data focus will be on the housing market, with a third consecutive monthly drop in existing home sales seen in March. The FHFA house price index is also due, along with the Richmond Federal Reserve manufacturing index.
