Today is World Toilet Day (http://worldtoiletday.org/) and rice has contributed to providing this sanitation device to more people through better efficiency.You’ve probably not spent much time thinking about the technology that makes toilets possible. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is changing that with their Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, which encourages researchers to create a cost-effective toilet that can remove germs from the waste, recover valuable resources, and operate without a substantive network of water, sewer, and electrical lines. Research teams can apply for grants to help them with development.

So how do they test the toilets to see how well they work? They create fake feces.After extensive testing, they found the perfect recipe – one that might sound a little like dinner: it is composed of soybean paste and rice and made on a machine like the ones that make sausages. This combination most closely mimics the real thing in weight and the way it breaks down, and its consistency can easily be altered. Since they began testing in 2003, toilet capacity has increased from 335 grams to over 650 grams in a single flush – nearly three times the average deposit! They’ve also revealed solarpowered toilets that generate electricity and toilets that extract useful elements and resources from the waste.

Offers continue to be seen around $15.65-$16.66 per fob farm (about $345-$367 per ton), depending on where they are located in the U.S. mid-South, for November through December shipment. Bids from mills were unchanged near $16.00 per cwt (about $353 per ton ) or higher while bids from exporters could still be seen around $15.56 per cwt (about $343 per ton), both for November through December delivery, although little trade activity was reported today.

It’s a much more cost-efficient choice, and it doesn’t take but a few minutes to craft the recipe.

This particular recipe is inspired by a treatment in the Maldives, so it uses traditional Maldivian ingredients. However, most of them are probably already on your spice rack. The one exception is rice powder or brown rice flour, which can be found at some grocery stores or specialty stores.

Oryza Afternoon Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Fail to Break Through Nearby Resistance at $15.895, Settle Nearly Unchanged Nov 19, 2013

Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery settled 0.5 cents per cwt (about $0.11 per ton) lower at $15.840 per cwt (about $349 per ton). Rough rice futures were little changed after a day of back-and-forth trading with the majority of the day’s activity taking place within 5 cents per cwt (about $1 per ton) of unchanged. Buyers were once again active today, however large offers noted slightly above the session highs likely limited their aggressiveness as they decided to be patient in an attempt to get better fills. Negativity in outside markets likely added additional pressure to the rice market.

The other grains were seen mixed; soybeans finished the day about 0.9% lower at $12.7625 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.3% higher at $6.5025 per bushel; and corn finished the day about 1.4% higher at $4.1875 per bushel.U.S. stocks tallied mild declines on Tuesday as investors wait to hear from the Federal Reserve in weighing central-bank monetary moves ahead. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke speaks at a dinner Tuesday night, and Wednesday brings the release of minutes from the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average wavered on either side of neutral. On Monday, the blue-chip index cleared 16,000 for the first time and ended with a slight gain and its fourth straight record close. The S&P 500 slid. Utilities paced losses and financials performed the best among its 10 major industry groups. On Monday the benchmark climbed to an intraday record and surpassed the 1,800 level before finishing the session with a modest loss. After the prior day's close snapped a six-session winning streak, the Nasdaq was lately lower.

Ultimately the nearby contract settled just a tick lower as large offers overhead limited gains. Technically today’s action is seen as supportive as prices marked a higher high and higher low from the previous session.

The expanding Bollinger bands also provide additional support as the upper Bollinger band moves higher to provide an ever increasing price objective, noted at $15.952 per cwt (about $352 per ton) today. As mentioned the market will first have to overcome nearby resistance marked by the nearby high before moving to test secondary resistance or ultimately psychological resistance at $16.000 per cwt (about $353 per ton). Today’s trading range is noted as $15.765-$15.895 per cwt (about $348-$350 per ton).Monday, there were 370 contracts traded, down from 374 contracts traded on Friday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Monday increased by 12 contracts to 8,212.

Oryza Rice Currency Analysis for Today – Market Waiting for Clarity on Fed Monetary Policy Nov 19, 2013

U.S. dollar index was down -0.15% from the open today, when it traded at 80.705 at the close.

Euro was +0.18% higher today by the close, trading around 1.3530 by end of day, after trading between an intraday high of 1.3547 and low of 1.3488. Markets continue to be very focused on trying to read when the Fed will taper its bond buying program. Tonight Ben Bernanke is giving a speech and Wednesday FOMC minutes will be released.

Thai baht was weaker -0.13%, trading at 31.630 at the close of business.

Indian rupee was +0.06% stronger, trading at 62.3750.

Brazilian real was -0.31% weaker than the open at today’s close, when it ended at 2.2709 reais per dollar.

Pakistan rupee was almost unchanged trading at 107.5850.

Vietnamese dong was unchanged at 21105.

Thailand Government Targets 130 Billion Baht from Rice Sales in 2014 Nov 19, 2013

The Thai government hopes to earn around 130 billion baht (about $4 billion, using current rates) from release of rice from it stockpile in 2014.Thai officials claim the government could only sell about 800,000 tons of rice to traders from the government stockpile against the target of around 2 million tons, and has sold around 8 million tons of rice in government-to-government deals since 2012.Thailand exported about 7 million tons of rice in 2012 worth around 148.8 billion baht (about $4.72 billion, using historical exchange rates), down from around 10.3 million tons of exports worth about 196 billion baht (about $6.4 billion, using historical exchange rates) in the previous year.

Egypt Government Allows Export of 102,000 Tons of Rice Nov 19, 2013

Thee Egypt government has awarded export licenses to 39 companies for export of around 102,000 tons of white medium grain rice by January 15, 2014.According to trade sources, the lowest awarded price is around EGP 321 (about $46) per ton, and exporters will have to pay an export fee of around EGP 1,000 (about $144) per ton.Earlier this year, the government banned rice exports to contain rice prices. However, prices have dropped in the recent months due to a good harvest. According to Egypt's Agricultural Export council, a rice surplus of around 800,000 tons is expected this year. China Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange Launches Futures Contracts for Japonica Rice Nov 19, 2013

China’s Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE) launched rice futures contracts for Japonica rice variety yesterday after China Securities Regulatory Commission officially approved the trading of the rice variety for the first time in the country.Early indica rice (ER) futures debuted in ZCE in 2009, and the launch of Japonica rice (short grain) is expected to help China improve its control of global rice prices in future. "China is a large producer and consumer of rice.

The rice future will help us get a bigger say in terms of pricing in the global rice market," Wei Lixiang, Vice-Chairman of Zhengzhou Securities Exchange, told Chinese state media.The first exchange-traded contracts of Japonica rice are for JR403, JR405, JR407, JR409, JR411, and the base price for each contract listed are 3,050 yuan (about $498) per ton. At the time of reporting JR 405 was trading at around 3064 yuan (about $499) per ton. The government procurement price of Japonica rice is 3,000 yuan (about $489) per ton.Japonica rice is the most expensive rice in China and accounts for around 30% of the country’s total rice production of around 140 million tons. China is also the world’s largest producer of Japonica rice.

Philippines to Import 500,000 Tons of Rice Soon Nov 19, 2013

The Philippines National Food Authority (NFA) council has approved rice imports of up to 500,000 tons to improve buffer rice stocks in an emergency meeting last Friday. The rice is likely to be imported from Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia in November or December, 2013, local sources say.NFA has distributed about 298,218 tons of rice so far in relief operations in the aftermath of typhoon Haiyan that struck the country on

November 7-8, 2013. Rice crop losses due to the typhoon are estimated at below 2 million tons of paddy, and local sources had anticipated higher rice imports this year.However, NFA rice stocks had declined sharply even before the typhoon struck.

According to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), total rice stocks in the Philippines as of October 1, 2013 stood at around 1.7 million tons, down about 11% from last year.

Rice stocks with the NFA stood at around 390,000 tons, down about 23% from last year.

The BAS had said rice stocks with the NFA were enough to last less than two weeks.Meanwhile, rice prices, which were already high before the typhoon strike, are touching record highs due to hoarding, local sources say. According to the BAS, average retail prices of well milled rice (WMR) in the second week of November (November 6-12) stood at around P38.41 per kilogram (about $880 per ton), up about 9% from the same time in 2012. Regular milled rice (RMR) prices at around P35.35 per kilogram (about $810 per ton) were almost 11% higher than last year’s levels. Local sources say that the government must import rice soon to prevent hoarding and consequent steep price rises ahead of Christmas next month.The Philippines has imported around 210,445 tons of rice so far in 2013, down about 70% from around 692,220 tons imported in 2012, according to official sources.

Vietnam rice sellers increased their quotes for 5% broken rice, 25% broken rice and 100% broken rice by about $5 per ton each to around $400 - $410 per ton, $370 - $380 per ton, and $350 - $360 per ton respectively today. Other Asia rice sellers kept their quotes mostly unchanged.

5% Broken Rice Thai 5% rice is quoted around $400 - $410 per ton, on par with Viet 5% rice shown around $400 - $410 per ton, up about $5 per ton from yesterday.

Indian 5% rice is quoted around $410 - $420 per ton, about a $35 per ton premium over Pak 5% rice quoted around $375 - $385 per ton.

Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery are currently paused 2.5 cent per cwt (about $1 per ton) lower at $15.820 per cwt (about $349 per ton) as of 8:00am Chicago time. The other grains are seen mixed this morning ahead of floor trading in Chicago: soybeans are currently seen about 0.1% lower, wheat is seen about 0.7% higher, and corn is paused about 0.6% higher.

U.S. stock index futures pointed mostly lower Tuesday as Asian and European stocks mirrored Wall Street's losses from the previous session. All key European bourses and sectors posted losses on Tuesday morning and Asian equity markets were mostly lower as well. Comments from the New York Federal Reserve President also weighed on sentiment, as he was optimistic about the U.S. economic recovery, usually taken as a sign of support for the central bank reducing its stimulus program soon. Data out during Tuesday's session included third quarter employment costs, which rose marginally in the third quarter, pointing to tame wage inflation that should let the Fed maintain its bondbuying program. The Brazilian paddy rice index maintained by CEPEA has increased to around 33.92 real per 50 kilograms as of November 18, 2013, up almost 1% from around 33.65 real per 50 kilograms recorded on November 11, 2013.In terms of USD per ton, the index stood at around $296 per ton (using current exchange rates) on November 18, 2013, up about 2% compared to around $291 per ton (using historical exchange rates) recorded on November 11, 2013.
