Waste Not, Want Not; Energy to Move Forward and a Foundation to Build On, with Rice Oct 31, 2013

Technology developed by a British company is being used by a Malaysian company in partnership with a Vietnamese company to build 18-20 biomass plants in six provinces in Vietnam. The plants will use rice husks which would otherwise be discarded and each one will produce 10 MW of electrical energy, for a total of 180200 MW. These energy plants are especially unique because the ash they produce is a “non-hazardous high quality ash” that can be used like cement to reinforce concrete, making the entire process even more sustainable. In fact, the ash‟s trademark and guarantee of quality will make it an export commodity in itself, a crucial factor in the decision to invest such large capital in the project. The project is said to cost about 384 million pounds ( about $620 million) and construction is scheduled to start before the end of the calendar year. This endeavor is the latest in a rash of plans to utilize the waste parts of plants, especially rice, to produce energy.

Oryza U.S. Rough Rice Recap – Rice Mills Continue to Keep a Bid Under the Market; Export Pace Seen Steady Oct 31, 2013

Offers could still be seen near $15.56-$16.66 per fob farm (about $343-$367 per ton), depending on where they are located in the U.S. mid-South, for November through December shipment.Bids from most larger mills decreased to around $14.40 per cwt (about $317 per ton)while bids from exporters could still be found around $15.40 per cwt (about $340 per ton), both for November through December delivery, although there were reports of small lots of rice as high as $16.00 per cwt (about $353 per ton) delivered mill.In the meantime, today the USDA reported that cumulative net export sales for the weeks ending in Oct 10, Oct 17, and Oct 24, totaled 229,300 tons with increases reported for the following destinations including: 40,900 tons to unknown destinations; 40,000 tons to Iraq; 25,600 tons to Mexico; 25,000 tons to Japan; and 19,600 tons to Saudi Arabia.U.S. rice exporters shipped 99,800 tons with the primary destinations including: 34,300 tons to Haiti; 11,400 tons to Saudi Arabia; 9,400 tons to Honduras; 8,700 tons to Canada; and 7,900 tons to Mexico.

Looking for a healthy Halloween meal to offset the sugar and empty calories being consumed? How about creamed maggot pie with bug bits, phlegm, and fingernails? Sounds yummy, right?! (Of course, this is really just rice pudding in disguise, but you can decide whether or not to reveal that information to your guests.).Whisk together 2 tablespoons of tapioca starch and 2 tablespoons of milk (nondairy if you prefer).

Slowly add in the remaining 2/3 cup of milk (minus the 2 tablespoons you just used) and 1/4 cup of maple syrup, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Once it‟s combined, stir in 3 cups of cooked rice (short grain works best), a cup of banana chunks, and a half cup of raisins. Spread it into a lightly greased pie dish and sprinkle a tablespoon or so of sugar on top for additional sweetness, if desired. After baking for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, let it cool before garnishing with sliced almonds and additional coconut milk, ice cream, or maple syrup, if desired.This recipe is easily adaptable – use your imagination to add other gruesome details to the fingernail almonds and raisin bug bits. Maybe some peeled-grape eyeballs?

India Promotes ‘Makam’ Red Rice Oct 31, 2013

It seems that red rice is experiencing a surge in popularity these days. While China is busy promoting growth of its red rice, kermes, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is encouraging farmers to grow “Makam,” a new red kernel rice variety. Scientists say the Makam rice is preferable to the Jyoti variety that has typically been planted because of its higher yield. Makam is also more pest-resistant and shatter-resistant, whereas Jyoti loses about 30% of its grain before harvest.Some farmers are resistant to try new varieties of rice, so ICAR is distributing seed rice to farmers to promote it. The farmers are concerned about Makam‟s taste and nutrients, but ICAR maintains that it is just as tasty and nutritious as Jyoti.At a recent „field day‟ in Aldona, scientists showed farmers two separate areas in a rice field, one grown with Makam and one grown with Jyoti. They counted the number of seedlings and stalks, measured the length of the panicle, counted the grains in the panicle, and weighed the grains. Makam produced 7.8 tons per hectare whereas Jyoti produced only 3-4 tons per hectare. Farmers using SRI cultivation (System of Rice Intensification) can transplant the seedlings without uprooting them after only 12 days instead of the typical 20+ days required.

Oryza Rice Currency Analysis for Today – Brazil Real Plunges 2%; Euro Down 1% Oct 31, 2013

U.S. dollar index was up +0.52% from the open today, when it traded at 80.195 at the close.

Euro was -1.07% lower today by the close, trading around 1.3589 by end of day, after trading between an intraday high of 1.3739 and low of 1.3584. The Euro fell on a disappointing unemployment report.

Thai baht was weaker -0.25%, trading at 31.185 at the close of business.

Indian rupee was weaker -0.42% trading at 61.4950.

Brazilian real was -1.99% weaker than the open at today‟s close, when it ended at 2.350 reais per dollar.

Pakistan rupee was -0.04% weaker at the close, trading at 106.9150.

Vietnamese dong was unchanged at 21100.

Mexican peso was -0.72% weaker today, when it traded at 13.0290 pesos per dollar by the close of business today.

Chinese yuan was stronger +0.01% at 6.0938.

Argentine peso was -0.10% weaker at 5.9113 pesos per dollar.

Rough Rice Futures Break Through Lower Boundary of Recent Trading Range, within Striking Range of $15.000 Oct 31, 2013

Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery settled 20 cents per cwt (about $4 per ton) lower at $15.105 per cwt (about $333 per ton). Rough rice futures finished sharply lower today, breaking out of the recent $15.25$15.550 per cwt (about $336-$343 per ton) trading range. Today‟s move lower came as selling interest intensified and as support from November buying has all but dried up, as open interest falls below 100 contracts. The other grains finished lower; soybeans finished the day about 0.6% lower at $12.8025 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.1% lower at $6.6750 per bushel; and corn finished the day about 0.5% lower at $4.2825 per bushel.U.S. stocks wobbled between gains and losses on Thursday, as investors considered earnings that included a miss from Dow component Visa and an unexpectedly robust read on Chicago manufacturing. In position for a 3.2% monthly gain, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was modestly lower.

Consumer discretionary and technology led sector gains among the S&P 500's 10 major industry groups; utilities and financials were the poorest performers. U.S. stock markets are currently trading down about 0.1%, gold is trading about 1.9% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 0.3% lower, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.5% higher at about 2:00pm Chicago time.Looking to the daily continuation chart of Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery, the recent trend of up one day, down the next, has come to an end with the market breaking out to the downside. Today‟s action saw the recent low of $15.250 per cwt (about $336 per ton) fail as nearby support and prices abruptly fell further.

An uptick in outright selling pressure was met with lackluster scaled down buying. This development provides a bearish forecast for tomorrow‟s trade direction. It has also put the market in position to test additional support seen near $15.000 per cwt (about $331 per ton), a level that acts as psychological support and is currently very close to the price objective provided by the lower Bollinger band. Today‟s trading range is noted as $15.100$15.300 per cwt (about $333-$337 per ton).Wednesday, there were 879 contracts traded, up from 782 contracts traded on Tuesday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Wednesday decreased by 46 contracts to 8,750.

Asia rice sellers kept their quotes mostly unchanged today.

5% Broken Rice Thai 5% rice is quoted around $405 - $415 per ton, about a $15 per ton premium over Viet 5% rice shown around $390 - $400 per ton.

Indian 5% rice is quoted around $410 - $420 per ton, about a $40 per ton premium over Pak 5% rice quoted around $370 - $380 per ton.

25% Broken Rice Thai 25% rice is quoted about $390 - $400 per ton, about a $30 per ton premium over Viet 25% rice shown around $360 - $370 per ton.

Indian 25% rice is quoted about $365 - $375 per ton, about a $30 per ton premium over Pak 25% rice quoted around $335 - $345 per ton.

Myanmar Exports 450,000 Tons in April-October 2013; Down 38% from Last Year Oct 31, 2013

Myanmar‟s rice exports during April – October 2013 stand at around 450,000 tons, down about 38% from around 730,000 tons exported during the period in the fiscal year 2012-13 (April – March), according to local sources.In FY 2012-13, Myanmar exported a record 2.1 million tons of rice, up about 40% from the targeted 1.5 million tons. Myanmar is targeting exports of around 1.5 million tons of rice again in FY 2013-14. However, local sources say that it is unlikely the export target will be met this year.Myanmar‟s rice exports surged last

year mainly due to a good crop and low prices. However, rice crop this year was adversely affected by weather disturbances and prices are higher this year, according to the FAO. Moreover, Chinese importers have turned to Thailand and Vietnam for better quality rice after lowering of prices there.

Pakistan to Seek Thailand, Vietnam Support Against India’s Food Security Law at WTO Oct 31, 2013

Pakistan will not allow India to get an approval of World Trade Organization (WTO) members for its Food Security Law which the Pakistan government claims is market distorting. According to local sources, the Pakistan government is seeking support of other rice exporters, Thailand and Vietnam, to prevent India from getting a legal subsidy on rice exports in the next WTO meeting to be held in December 2013.

According to local sources, Pakistan government officials say that Pakistan has already lost rice export market share to India last year due to exports of subsidized rice from stocks maintained by India‟s state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI). They add that the recently enacted Food Security Law will allow India to increase subsidies provided to farmers which will ultimately distort the international export market.

India and other G-33 countries are proposing changes in WTO rules which will help increase food subsidies for welfare programs. The Indian government says that the Food Security Law will not distort the international rice market. Local traders in India say that almost all the rice exported by India is handled completely by private traders without any involvement of the FCI. India is the world‟s largest rice exporter, ahead of Thailand and Vietnam.

Russia Rice Harvest Reaches 652,500 Tons So Far; Down 40% from Last Year Oct 31, 2013

Russia‟s total rice crop harvested as of October 22, 2013 stands at around 652,500 tons of paddy, down about 40% from around 1.1 million tons recorded during the same time last year, according to the USDA.USDA also says that as of October 22, 2013, rice was harvested from 126,000 hectares (66%of sown area), down about27 % from 172,700 hectares recorded during the same time last year, and down about 15% from around 148,500 hectares in 2011.
