As the warm summer weather finally makes its way into Syracuse, a cold dessert is a welcome commodity.

Located in the Salt City area, these ice cream shops offer more than one way to satisfy those tasty cravings.

The shop originally opened in 1967 as a Carvel Ice Cream until then-owners Bishop and Claire Shaloom changed the name to A La Mode. Since 2010, Jeanne Catalfamo has owned the shop and expanded to offer a full catering menu. Most items on the menu are made in house.

Kenny’s Corner really appreciates its customers. After purchasing 100 cones during the summer season, Kenny’s Corner patrons earn a signed shirt with the image of Kenny’s “The Original Two-Berry Twist” cone. The shop also offers Dog Days during which it gives out free dog treats to customers’ fourlegged pals.

Over the past few years, Bailey’s Dairy Treat has done a promotion for National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day. In 2014, the store offered a discount for patrons who answered trivia questions correctly. In 2016, the store pledged to donate a portion of every purchase to the American Cancer Society. In 1948, Arctic Island Ice Cream was founded by Arnie Taub, and then sold to Daniel and Gwen Sorber in 2005.

After a round of golf and a walk around the zoo, the park’s swimming pool is the spot to cool down and unwind.

While April showers in Syracuse were often accompanied by snow, May flowers have sprung, and local parks and trails are the places to be all summer long.

The City of Syracuse Department of Parks Recreation and Youth Programs celebrates its centennial this year. The department encourages friends and families to get outside, have fun and participate in the many activities.

From basketball to pickleball to yoga in the park, the parks department created the City Parks Centennial Challenge to get people to log 100 activities in the parks over the year.

The department will host its first free Centennial event on Thursday — Syracuse Parks — 100 Years of Fun and More to Come — in the Onondaga Park Firebarn on 500 Summit Ave. Leaders and members of park associations and staff will speak about the parks’ history and future plans.

With more than 50 parks in Syracuse, here are a few to check out.

CLINTON SQUARE

Clinton Square is at the heart of Syracuse and has been recognized as the gathering place for central New Yorkers for more than a century. Many know the Clinton Square Ice Rink that operates in the square during winter, but it also hosts Syracuse festivals through October and its weekly farmers market that begins at 7 a.m. every Saturday.

ELMWOOD PARK

Elmwood Park has 65 acres filled with hiking trails, athletic fields, a playground and a picnic area with a pavilion and picnic tables. Dating back to 1806, the history of the park’s grounds is interesting. It was the location of a battle in the War of 1812 and William Pardee’s “First Class Temperance Pleasure Resort” before becoming Elmwood Park in 1927.

Named after William A. Barry, former commissioner of the parks department, the park located on Meadowbrook Drive is within walking distance of Syracuse University.

BURNET PARK

Local libraries go past reading to provide career services, creative space

Just because school is out, that doesn’t mean learning has to be over. Syracuse has several libraries that offer programs to build up one’s skillset. The Onondaga County Public Library’s Central Library, located near Armory Square, is one of them with a busy summer ahead.

Summers matter at Onondaga County Public Library. Our libraries offer programs for all ages, especially focused on kids in grades K-12, to help prevent the summer slide.

The library offers programs for kids, adults and those in between. For help finding

a job or creating a resume, library goers can call and make an appointment for assistance.

Art studios, open chess matches, book clubs and Minecraft mania will also be offered at the Central Library.

Programs will also be offered through the Central Makerspace, a new addition to the library, added earlier this year. With new technology, the space allows anyone to explore coding, robots, art, microscopes and more.

Among the classes offered in the maker space is one to teach patrons ages 12 and up how to use a Canon digital single-lens reflex camera and a movie making software iMovie.

“Summers matter at Onondaga County Public Library. Our libraries offer programs for all ages, especially focused on kids in grades K-12, to help prevent the summer slide,” said Rene Batelle, a teen librarian at the Central Library, in an email. “We combine education and fun in our summer learning program, where kids can earn prizes for a variety of informal learning experiences including reading, STEM activities, visual and performing arts, and virtually anything else they are into.”

Setting the scene Local theaters to entertain summer crowds with classic plays, musicals and progressions of the couples.

For those looking to support local art or see a show during the summer months, the theater scene in Syracuse offers numerous options to do so.

Through May 28, the Syracuse Stage/ SU Drama Complex is showing a production of “Deathtrap,” a 1978 play written

by Ira Levin referencing itself as a play within a play. The preface to the printed script describes the play as “something so evil that it infects all who touch it. The thing has a life of its own.”

The play has incorporated thrillers and horror stories. Specifically, the preface lists “murder, deceit, innocent dialogue with hidden sinister meanings, plot reversals, unexpected turns of events … and twisted and rearranged the pieces.”

Light it up Experience tradition, culture come alive through light at the NYS Chinese Lantern Festival

More than 30 lantern displays light up the New York State Chinese Lantern Festival.

Among the displays are baby pandas, a three-story Chinese palace pagoda and a 200-foot-long dragon.

Through June 24, patrons can indulge in Chinese culture every day of the week except for Mondays at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Experience ancient

practices and traditions and check out Chinese acrobats, face changers and palm weaving, according to the festival website.

While the festival found its way into the United States within the past ten years it has been a part of Chinese culture for thousands of years. Artisanal silk lanterns were passed down from generation to generation celebrating each spring. The festival represents prosperity and the coming of the new year.

With the clouds clearing and the sun on the horizon, a warm summer in Syracuse is near.

With it comes a variety of activities one can do in central New York — going on a long hike or picking up a new skill like sewing. Here are some hobbies you can pick up to make a summer in Syracuse entertaining:

1. HIKE

Get out your sneakers. Enjoy the warmth with a walk through one of the many trails in central New York. Hiking clubs in the area include the Adirondack 46ers and the Adirondack Mountain Club, which offers 200 outings every year, 40 of which take members through the Adirondacks peaks and trails. The club also offers Walking Wednesday, a hike of three to six miles through central New York for people who want to see what the club is about before becoming members.

Trips include day hikes, weekend overnight hikes, backpacking, bicycling and mountain climbing.

2. SEW

You can dust off an old sewing machine at home or rent one for an hour or two to brush up on or pick up your needles this summer. For beginners, gatherings like The Sewing Cafe offer sewing supplies, classes and hourly machine rentals.

If you feel like embarking on a new project altogether, the Sewing Interest Group at the Women of the University Community at Syracuse University creates a new sewing project tailored to the group’s interests accompanied by wine and appetizers. 3. JOIN A BOOK CLUB

If the year was too packed to read a book comfortably, joining a book club this summer may be the solution to polishing your reading habit.

Clubs like the Syracuse Book Club select their books two months in advance through a poll and meet the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. Niche groups like the Syracuse Ladies R.E.A.D (Read, Eat and Discuss) Book Club also do monthly book discussions while sampling food at different locations. They welcome open-minded women of all backgrounds and cultures for a $5 annual membership fee.

4. SCRAPBOOK

Most scrapbooking clubs welcome beginners, teach the basics and some even host arts exhibitors at scrapbooking getaways.

For a quick trial of scrapbooking, join Lucy’s Creative Makers Paper Crafts Meetup, where three women host monthly scrapbooking workshops at Canastota Public Library, with tools supplied.

5. LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE

Step out of your comfort zone this summer by picking up a new language to add to your repertoire. The Language Lovers of Syracuse Meetup hosts a myriad of events for those who want to learn a new language or are just interested in meeting other global-minded citizens.

In its second year the Lakeview Amphitheater will put on 18 shows during the summer through September. Acts will include country, pop, rock, kid music and two music festivals.

The amphitheater is an outdoor concert venue overlooking Onondaga Lake. Located at 490 Restoration Way, it is an extension of the Empire Expo Center within the New York State Fairgrounds. The venue holds up to 17,500 people. All seats within the pavilion have reserved seating except for the general admission pit areas near the stage for designated shows and the general admission Express Mart lot on the outskirts of the venue. Kick off summer by racing into a local stadium or speedway

Syracuse University’s sports may be in their off seasons, but summer in Syracuse is still full of sports action.

The Syracuse Chiefs are in the swing of things on the baseball diamond. Syracuse FC, Syracuse’s new National Premier Soccer League team, kicks things off this upcoming weekend. Oswego Speedway began racing this past weekend.

Whether it’s eating a dollar dog at a Chiefs game, rooting on the new professional soccer team at David W. Murphy Field or watching racecars drive by in the speedway pit, here’s how to check out the local Syracuse sports this summer.

OSWEGO SPEEDWAY

The speedway celebrated its 67th Season Opener in May. Built in 1951, the asphalt track, located at 300 E. Albany St., welcomes practices and races of supermodified race cars. The “Home of the Supermodifieds” has races through September as it finishes off with its 61st Annual Classic Week, when there are different races all week and events throughout the community, like bowling at Lighthouse Lanes on August 30. Tickets can be purchased for grandstand general admission, reserved seating, pit pass and VIP seating.

SYRACUSE CHIEFS

The triple-A affiliate for the Washington Nationals, the Syracuse Chiefs season began in April and continues into September. With games nearly every day, the team takes on some of the best Major League Baseball prospects around the country. During almost every home game at NBT Bank Stadium, the Chiefs offer a promotion.

Fans can enjoy hotdogs for just a quarter on “25 Cent Hot Dog Monday.” On “Taco Tuesdays,” $10 gets fans three tacos. If the Chiefs win on “Winning Wednesdays,” fans get to exchange their ticket for a future game’s ticket.

Every Thursday is “$1 Thursday” when a dollar goes a long way. Hot dogs and CocaCola products only cost a dollar, and for two

dollars, fans can get Coors, LaBatt, Saranac and 1911 products. On Fridays at NBT Bank Stadium, at the end of the games fans can stick around for fireworks. Sundays are for families during “NBT Bank Family Sunday.”

on May 20 at 3 p.m. at Onondaga Community College’s David W. Murphy Field.

Syracuse museums offer escape from summer heat and occasional rainy day

The city of Syracuse is home to museums for the art enthusiast or the scientific explorer.

On those occasional rainy summer days or when the heat is too much to handle, Syracuse museums offer fun activities indoors.

Located downtown, the Everson Museum of Art hosts about 11,000 works of art, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, video, graphics and ceramics. The museum dedicates itself to purely American art, being one of the first museums to ever do so.

The building, designed by architect I.M. Pei, is a work of art in and of itself.

The Everson is hosting several exhibitions this summer. Seen and Heard, opening June 10, is an exhibit commemorating the 100th anniversary of the passage of women’s suffrage in New York State in 1917. The exhibit explores the state’s vast history of activism and advocacy for social change, and the use of art to do so.

Inspired by Barbara Kruger’s “Who Speaks, Who is Silent?,” a work of art in the museum’s permanent collection that explores silence and representation for women, this exhibit brings together a number of works from artists working in photography, printmaking and social practice. Seen and Heard explores the function of the arts in protest and social change.

The Everson will also host three outdoor film screenings throughout the summer, offering a variety of films to pique anyone’s interest. On July 20, it will screen “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” a 1964 politi-

cal black comedy that satirizes the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union and the ongoing threat of nuclear conflict during the Cold War. On August 3, there will be a showing of “The Matrix,” a classic 1999 science fiction portraying a dystopian future where reality is a simulation known as the Matrix. On August 17, the museum will screen “The Wizard of Oz,” the classic 1930s Technicolor musical about a young girl’s journey from Kansas to the Emerald City, regarded by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest films of all time.

Although mostly aimed at children, the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology is another way to pass the time. One of the museum’s most popular attractions is the Dr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Silverman Planetarium, a 24-foot domed room with an Apollo Star Projector. Though the presentations given at 11:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. every day are for kids, adults can take a look during off-hours for a cool, peaceful environment.
