ANA seeks review of National Library Law OLAIDE OYELUDE, Ibadan
P
resident of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Professor Remi Raji, has urged the Federal Government to review the National Library of Nigeria, Decree 29 of 1970 to meet the contemporary issues evolving in the management of depository in the country. Raji spoke in Ibadan, Oyo State capital while presenting keynote address at a two-day workshop on legal deposit organised by the National Library of Nigeria.
He said most of the provisions of the decree have become obsolete, therefore, making it easy for publishers to evade obeying the legal deposit requirements. According to him, the National Library of Nigeria, Decree 29 of 1970 has fallen behind the tide of times in the world of library management and bibliography, stressing that provision of the decree on penalty of ÂŁ50 for defaulters is obsolete and must be changed for publishers and authors to take their obligations on the legal depository seriously. He also urged authors
and publishers to work hand in hand with the National Library of Nigeria to ensure they get their iY\m^Rf\PR^hSNO5PQRUYRUVPR national library towards including them into the national bibliography, insisting that the legal depository is the window
for intellectual works to be exposed to the world. However, Director and VOPWR oPXhUO_PR JXP\R of the National Library of Nigeria, Mallam Habib Abba Jato, said the workshop on legal deposit is geared towards achieving one of its (National
Library of Nigeria) core mandates as stipulated in the enabling Act 29 of 1970, which mandated publishers, state and federal agencies to submit copies of their published work to the library. Jato disclosed that though there have been defaulters
of the Act, National Library of Nigeria has embarked on sensitisation of stakeholders in the depository sector to abide by the stipulations of the Act, which he said has ONNPZ^PR SPZPcU^R UYR UVPR author, publisher and Nigeria.
