‘Dancing With The Stars’: A ‘SYTYCD’ junkie’s first time As a die-hard “So You Think You Can Dance” fan, I’ve never been a follower of “Dancing with the Stars”—I thought it could only be a gaudy version of my favorite dance show. However, after tuning into the semifinals last week, I’m hooked.

Flashy costumes, upbeat pop music, enthusiastic judges, a witty host and musical guests are already a recipe for reality-TV success as both shows have proven. But as I recently discovered, mix in more sexy dance routines performed by celebrities finding their inner dancing divas, and you’ve got one hell of a good time.

With just four celebrity teams remaining, consisting of Iraq vet-turned actor J.R. Martinez, soccer star Hope Solo, former talk show host Ricki Lake and reality star Rob

Kardashian, this round was intense. Judges and audience members had the power to decide which team would go home. Teams performed three back-to-back dances with their coaches, including a sexy samba, a tasty tango and the Argentinean cha-cha.

Unlike the dancers on “SYTYCD,” our stars have no dance training. Though this leads to some less-than-spectacular performances, it also allows audience members to feel involved and critique what they see. I’m no dance major, but I felt like one, intensely counting missteps and jerky landings.

After a recap of each dance and listening to the comments behind stage, the audience waited with bated breath to see the results, and in the meantime enjoyed performances by guest stars the Muppets and

Cobra Starship. After calculating collective points, judges wished Solo farewell. With the remaining three teams anticipating a fierce battle, we can only wait to see who will win the Mirrorball trophy!

While “SYTYCD” appeals to more experienced dancers, or at least those able to appreciate technique, “Dancing with the Stars” appeals to a more mainstream crowd.

In addition, if you’re not already sucked into “DWTS’” emotional and inspirational stories of celebrities who are determined to overcome personal challenges — from low self-esteem to physically handicapping injuries — through dance, you soon will be.

The American Music Awards will air on ABC this Sunday, Nov. 20 from 7-10 p.m.

Rise of a G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover comes to the silver screen Ideally, a film begins with a brilliant screenplay, which is interpreted by a discerning director and realized by responsive actors. In reality, this beautiful, delicate balance is rarely ever achieved. Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and written by Dustin Lance Black, comes pretty damn close.

This deft biopic tracks J. Edgar Hoover’s incredible 50-year tenure as director of the F.B.I. A master of the political game, Hoover’s brilliant (if questionable) tactics transformed his beloved bureau from a superfluous office with less authority than the local police into one of the most powerful institutions in the nation.

Even more intriguing is Hoover’s blighted

personal life: This straight-laced workaholic lived with his strict mother (the ever-fine Judi Dench) until her death, never married and was possibly (or, as this film portrays it, probably) a closeted homosexual. At one point, the attorney general accuses Hoover of having not a single friend, to which the humiliated young man responds, “That is accurate.”

This soon changes, with the hiring of Clyde Tolson as assistant director. DiCaprio gives an exceeding careful, exacting performance, succeeding where many would fail in not only giving the audience a view into a notoriously closed mind, but keeping us rooting for this distinctly unlikeable character. Yet the film would still feel

too cold without the poignant performance of Armie Hammer (formerly the Winklevii in The Social Network) as Tolson, who in addition being Hoover’s right-hand man, is also in love with him.

The patient, ever-suffering Tolson is a mirror to our own frustration, always trying and failing to make Hoover see how quickly he is adopting the tactics of the criminals he ruthlessly hunts.

Eastwood crafts a dark, brooding atmosphere that both captures the cold, tense politics of Washington and reflects the impersonal, increasingly paranoid worldview of its protagonist. A film with such a long timespan and wide-ranging subject matter could easily feel flabby and formless; Eastwood reins the film into a tight stylistic framework

that makes it clear why the septugenarian director is still stuck in the more attractively clean-cut ’20s.

Eastwood, DiCaprio and Black have created the equivalent of a cinematic souffle.

But despite the many impressive elements of this film, what lingers in one’s mind is the relationship, or lack thereof, between Tolson and Hoover.

Their relationship, though perhaps too reliant on doomed-love clichés, is heartbreaking, especially in light of the fact that such a pair would still be a near impossibility in the upper echelons of Washington.

Noel Gallagher of Oasis flies solo on debut album ‘Birds’ MORE MUSIC THIS WEEK Talk That Talk, Rihanna (Nov. 21) VH1 has called Ri-Ri’s sixth full-length album “the dirtiest pop record since Madonna’s Erotica.” Calvin Harris-produced single “We Found Love” continues to top the charts, and fans have heard snippets of some other leaked tracks to satiate their appetites.

My Life II... The Journey Continues (Act 1), Mary J. Blige (Nov. 21)

The sequel to her 1994 album My Life includes tracks featuring Beyonce, Drake, Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes and Nas. “25/8,” the single that dropped back in September, made a run to the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Top 40.

Noel Gallagher has just released his first album after his departure from the mercurial British outfit Oasis. As the man who spearheaded the success of Britpop, he has written most of Oasis’ songs and co-produced all of their albums. The band’s second album, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, which featured worldwide hits “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” proved Gallagher’s excellence in songwriting, and the band reached its commercial success by selling 14 million copies.

As expected, Gallagher’s self-titled album, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, reached No. 1 on the UK album chart, and 120,000 copies were sold in the UK within the first week. This number is almost double the album sales of Beady Eye, the band fronted by Gallagher’s brother Liam, the former vocalist of Oasis.

Gallagher’s band’s first single, “The Death of You and Me,” received positive reviews immediately after its release. Although the sound is much different from his previous work, a catchy

and slightly bluesy rhythm makes this a charming single. As with many of his singles, the lyrics are appealing, yet complicated enough to pique the listener’s interest. During the final verse, he sings: “I’m watching my TV/Or is it watching me?/I see another new day dawning/It’s rising over me with my morality/And I can feel the storm clouds/ Sucking up my soul.”

Gallagher later announced that “AKA… What A Life!” will be their next single. Throughout the song that he described as a “dance track,” there is a constant up beat, with progressing beats in the background. Known for his rather sarcastic and acerbic speech, cynicism remains in the lyrics. He concludes with, “Some say you might find your hero/Some say you might lose your mind.”

Although it may be hard to tell from the title, Gallagher’s first U.S. single, “If I Had A Gun,” is a mellow love song reminiscent of “Wonderwall.” In contrast to his lyrics for a lot of other songs, this one really shows a softer side of him. (Despite his

public image, his softer side comes through in songs like the one he wrote for his girlfriend, called “Slide Away.”) In this track, he sings, “‘Cause you’re the only God that I will ever need.”

This 10-track album ends with “Stop the Clocks,” a great closing song. It’s a simple-beat track with a bit of sentimental touch to it. The lyrics are also very fitting for this last track; toward the end, Gallagher sings, “And when the night is over/There’ll be no sound… And now might fight is over/There’ll be no sound.”

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is already platinum in the UK and was on the Top 20 charts in more than 15 countries, but its success has yet to be matched in the U.S. Gallagher is now on a world tour to promote his latest album, and most of the shows during his European tour are sold out. ‘Rent’: It’s the audience, baby, who are the lucky ones “Rent” burst onto the musical theatre scene in the ’90s in a well-known, albeit tragic, sequence of events: The untimely death of its writer, Jonathan Larson, the night before its off-Broadway premiere immediately catapulted it to notoriety, and soon after, to international-theatre-phenomenon status.

Since then, the musical itself has often been overshadowed by its fascinating backstory.

The musical, a genre-defying blend of rock opera, drama and musical theatre spectacle, follows a year in the lives of citizens of New York City’s “Alphabet City,” an urban bohemia reeling from drug addiction, the aftermath of the ’80s AIDS epidemic and an ever-present economic paranoia. Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La bohème,” “Rent” resonated with audiences in the mid- to late-’90s for its edgy themes and its modern, exciting score.

But Dominic Missimi, director of this fall’s Theatre and Interpretation Center production of “Rent,”

saw a distinctly moving tale that is, in numerous ways, more relevant than ever to today’s society of economic uncertainty and the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS, beyond its catchy backstory.

Other productions riding the new wave of “Rent” enthusiasm include an off-Broadway revival, as well as a Chicago production directed by David Cromer, both of which, along with Northwestern’s production, will be featured in an upcoming HMS Media documentary about Rent’s revived relevance. Rent added an additional performance on Nov. 20 to facilitate the filming of this documentary, in which several cast members will also be featured in interviews.

The company of “Rent,” a resilient group comprised of flamboyant cross-dressers, aspiring filmmakers, tortured rock stars and exuberant performance artists inspires, moves and entertains us in the midst of turmoil. Struggling musician Roger

Davis (a role shared by Kale Clauson and Alex Nee) and his creative counterpart and roommate, filmmaker Mark Cohen (Matt Deitchman), dream of better days while they struggle to pay rent, stay clean and stay friends. Surrounded by a host of bohemian friends, including junkie exotic dancer Mimi (KC Schlossberg) and computer whiz Collins (Jesse Grider), they struggle to keep love alive under the shadow of AIDS, poverty and addiction.

Although the production stays true to the original, certain characters differ from those of the familiar Broadway or film adaptation casts. Alex Goldklang’s slick, nasal incarnation of villainous landlord Benny might delight or disappoint depending on your loyalty to Taye Diggs’ movie and Broadway version of the character. Likewise, Schlossberg’s crazy-eyed Mimi is mesmerizing in a way that’s distinct from previous character portrayals. Whether in sorrow or seduction, her howling

vocals soar with contagious intensity. Meanwhile, Clauson (who played the part of brooding, coolly androgynous Roger at the show reviewed) channels the angsty gloom of Kurt Cobain while remaining magnetic in his melancholy performance.

Other characters shine best in pairs: Deitchman and Kelley Abell’s Joanne display self-deprecating humor and delightful vocals, while Grider and Britt Banaszynski (as Collins’ lover Angel) form the ultimate unlikely tear-jerking duo. Grider’s impossibly gorgeous deep bass voice underscores the show with warmth and gravity.

Inspiring, deeply powerful performances mixed with a dizzying score and resonant themes make “Rent” a must-see. Catch it on the upcoming documentary if sold-out performances keep you from the theatre.

Alessio Manti

JOURNEY -est NU moment MY____________

I’m a city girl. Like Aesop’s Town Mouse, Serena Van Der Woodsen and even Miss Piggy, I belong amongst the cluttered streets, huddled beneath skyscrapers and scrambling amongst big yellow taxis. There’s something so inherently romantic about The Big City, and my affair with Chicago, the windiest of them all, remains the most poignant of the relationships I formed in college.

I’ve never been one of those Evanstonian types.

The early bedtimes and the chain retail stores bore me, and if I stand on the lakeshore just beside my favorite painted rock, the jutting shark, I can make out the Chicago skyline, beckoning me. The El is my favorite café, the venue for my most prolific writing and the genesis of my love for El-evangelizing. I use it fairly often, jetsetting downtown to the entrancing lure of Big City Life. All things considered though, I’m no Chicago expert. I’m just

a goofy kid reaching out from the suburbs for a bit of adventure. And in just over three years at Northwestern, I’ve found no greater joy or adventure than the Journey to the End of the Night.

Journey was started in 2006 in San Francisco as a large-scale street game. The game combines a scavenger hunt with zombie tag, sending players traipsing across the city, attempting to remain covert while running across multiple lanes of traffic. The task is simple: get from the starting point to six checkpoints in the fastest time – and without getting caught by a relentless chaser. There are bits of all kinds of children’s playground games converging with parkour, but the result is the single most exhilarating thing I’ve done in college.

In May, I, with three of my closest friends, donned running shoes and a bad attitude, and climbed aboard the good ol’ El, psyching ourselves

up for Journey. It was to be a physically strenuous weekend for me thanks to the Mud Olympics (shoutout to Northwestern’s best Greek philanthropy), and as someone who includes eating as exercise on any physical fitness form, I wasn’t sure how I’d fare.

I knew the basics, and I was well stocked with my purple and white Northwestern Nalgene, but I wasn’t prepared for the swarm of people gearing up for what amounted to a giant no-holds-barred footrace. There was no one true path and there was fear around every corner, from ex-boyfriends to those nasty little bicycled chasers, and that thrill I felt as I ran down tiny city corridors was more than just the sensation of repeatedly getting the wind knocked out of me. I was frantically diving in bushes, scrambling between safe zones, throwing other participants before me as if a gift to the

idols, and never before had my love for Chicago and, by extension, NU beat so strong.

I’ll admit, I didn’t make it so far. I got caught, surprise surprise, at the classiest of all eateries, the White Castle, just after surmounting the second checkpoint. I had been locked in a heated battle with the city, and I had lost in a sweaty, disheveled contest. But in the two hours I spent camouflaging among shrubbery and shouting distracting epithets at approaching chasers, I reinvigorated a passion for a city I’d so longed to leave. That was the night I fell back in love with college, and though I didn’t make it to the end of the night, I made it to graduation. So, when I moved to San Francisco and joined the Journey effort again, I felt a fluttering infatuation with the Bay, but I felt too, that rekindled love for the purple and white.

From depression to recession, the cast and crew of the 2012 Dolphin Show has quite appropriately resurrected the musical hype of the 1930’s Broadway hit, “42nd Street.” Despite the cast and crews’ already hectic rehearsal schedule, co-producers Jeremy Shpizner and Lucas McMahon were able to sit down with The Current and give an insider’s perspective of the journey to the main stage.

The Current: Could you provide a brief summary of this year’s show?

Lucas McMahon: “42nd Street” is based on a 1933 movie directed by Lloyd Bacon with famous choreography by Busby Berkeley. It is about a young girl who auditions to be in the chorus of a large Broadway musical that’s being staged during the Great Depression. She goes out for the lead and ends up becoming a star. It’s really about the magic and the excitement of musical theater and what that can bring to the world during a time when there wasn’t much else to bring that happiness.

The Current: Now that rehearsals have begun, how is that process going so far?

Jeremy Shpizner: So far, they have staged almost all of Act 1. Essentially right after the cast is chosen, we immediately go into rehearsing the show, no time off. It goes on stage in January so we really have to work hard during the end of Fall Quarter through the beginning of Winter Quarter to get the production on stage and up and running smoothly. By the end of Fall Quarter it should be completely staged.

The Current: How do you come to a final decision for the year’s production?

LM: Last spring we sat and brainstormed for hours about feasible musicals and we ended with a list of about 100.

We then narrowed it down to three, considering the factors we knew we wanted to see like the dancing element and pitched those three to the board of Arts Alliance, finally landing on 42nd Street.

Northwestern’s Dolphin Show Prepares to Take the Main Stage JS: We have a very musically lively campus and that was a big part of us choosing this show. We really wanted to celebrate those aspects, the music and the life we have here.

The Current: What makes “42nd Street” unique from the shows you have done in the past?

LM: One of the most unique things about this show as opposed to other shows is that this is a very dance-driven production and has very spectacular musical numbers that really build the framework of the show design. This has a lot more of the typical big Broadway show-stopping elements that we usually don’t see on this campus.

The Current: Have there been any major triumphs? Setbacks?

LM: Fortunately there have not been any setbacks so far, and it’s fantastic that we can say that honestly. A major triumph for me is our cast. The audition process is long and treacherous for the performers and us, but we are so proud of the people that we got for this cast and crew. We can only hope it continues running so smoothly.

The Current: What are your expectations for the opening in January?

JS: Firstly, we hope to sell out as many shows as we can, so spread the word. On deeper level, theater for us is about story telling. We want to get people into that theater so we can share this one. The scenes have been designed to really convey the messages of the time period and the characters’ personal stories; we want the audience to really feel this.

Making his mark through causes and campaigns

Whether in sidewalk chalk or media headlines, SESP senior Alessio Manti has made his mark on campus. From running in the 2009 ASG presidential campaign to hosting recent protests like Tea Party to Occupy the Rock and In.Tent.City., Manti demonstrates the power of a positive attitude in promoting change, even when the going gets tough.

“One of my life mantras is ‘screw it, why not do it,’” Manti said. “If it seems like there isn’t a good answer to that question, then I will trust my instinct and follow it more or less where it leads me.”

Unlike other students who might take this phrase and use it for mischief, Manti has focused his efforts on finding ways to improve life for his community.

“I feel that every person has an obligation to give to their community if they expect to receive,” Manti said. “If we pour love and care and attention into our communities and surroundings, our nation will prosper. If we choose to remain bitterly divided and apathetic, we’re proverbially S.O.L.” This philosophy shows through in his numerous academic, philanthropic and social efforts on campus, according to students. Though the list is staggering, some of these endeavors include the founding and managing of student services such as MyCat Enterprises, LLC and the Deuce Caboose, involvement in student government and local group protests, as well as the development of a new internship program in his fraternity.

When asked what drives his seemingly endless pattern of activism and innovation, his response was simple — how could you not do it? Despite this simplistic approach, Manti recognizes that progress cannot always be achieved by just going with the flow, as frequent obstacles hinder

advancement on all levels. According to him, these challenges are all part of the process of achievement.

“If you’re willing to make mistakes and to humble yourself enough to learn from an experience, working outside of your comfort zone will lead you to extraordinary places,” Manti said.

In his personal life, Manti has experienced first hand how difficulties have the potential to lead to rewarding experiences — describing his parents’ divorce as one main factor leading to his ambitious attitude and desire to reconcile differences for the betterment of the community.

Alessio Manti

JOURNEY -est NU moment MY____________

I’m a city girl. Like Aesop’s Town Mouse, Serena Van Der Woodsen and even Miss Piggy, I belong amongst the cluttered streets, huddled beneath skyscrapers and scrambling amongst big yellow taxis. There’s something so inherently romantic about The Big City, and my affair with Chicago, the windiest of them all, remains the most poignant of the relationships I formed in college.

I’ve never been one of those Evanstonian types.

The early bedtimes and the chain retail stores bore me, and if I stand on the lakeshore just beside my favorite painted rock, the jutting shark, I can make out the Chicago skyline, beckoning me. The El is my favorite café, the venue for my most prolific writing and the genesis of my love for El-evangelizing. I use it fairly often, jetsetting downtown to the entrancing lure of Big City Life. All things considered though, I’m no Chicago expert. I’m just

a goofy kid reaching out from the suburbs for a bit of adventure. And in just over three years at Northwestern, I’ve found no greater joy or adventure than the Journey to the End of the Night.

Journey was started in 2006 in San Francisco as a large-scale street game. The game combines a scavenger hunt with zombie tag, sending players traipsing across the city, attempting to remain covert while running across multiple lanes of traffic. The task is simple: get from the starting point to six checkpoints in the fastest time – and without getting caught by a relentless chaser. There are bits of all kinds of children’s playground games converging with parkour, but the result is the single most exhilarating thing I’ve done in college.

In May, I, with three of my closest friends, donned running shoes and a bad attitude, and climbed aboard the good ol’ El, psyching ourselves

up for Journey. It was to be a physically strenuous weekend for me thanks to the Mud Olympics (shoutout to Northwestern’s best Greek philanthropy), and as someone who includes eating as exercise on any physical fitness form, I wasn’t sure how I’d fare.

I knew the basics, and I was well stocked with my purple and white Northwestern Nalgene, but I wasn’t prepared for the swarm of people gearing up for what amounted to a giant no-holds-barred footrace. There was no one true path and there was fear around every corner, from ex-boyfriends to those nasty little bicycled chasers, and that thrill I felt as I ran down tiny city corridors was more than just the sensation of repeatedly getting the wind knocked out of me. I was frantically diving in bushes, scrambling between safe zones, throwing other participants before me as if a gift to the

idols, and never before had my love for Chicago and, by extension, NU beat so strong.

I’ll admit, I didn’t make it so far. I got caught, surprise surprise, at the classiest of all eateries, the White Castle, just after surmounting the second checkpoint. I had been locked in a heated battle with the city, and I had lost in a sweaty, disheveled contest. But in the two hours I spent camouflaging among shrubbery and shouting distracting epithets at approaching chasers, I reinvigorated a passion for a city I’d so longed to leave. That was the night I fell back in love with college, and though I didn’t make it to the end of the night, I made it to graduation. So, when I moved to San Francisco and joined the Journey effort again, I felt a fluttering infatuation with the Bay, but I felt too, that rekindled love for the purple and white.

From depression to recession, the cast and crew of the 2012 Dolphin Show has quite appropriately resurrected the musical hype of the 1930’s Broadway hit, “42nd Street.” Despite the cast and crews’ already hectic rehearsal schedule, co-producers Jeremy Shpizner and Lucas McMahon were able to sit down with The Current and give an insider’s perspective of the journey to the main stage.

The Current: Could you provide a brief summary of this year’s show?

Lucas McMahon: “42nd Street” is based on a 1933 movie directed by Lloyd Bacon with famous choreography by Busby Berkeley. It is about a young girl who auditions to be in the chorus of a large Broadway musical that’s being staged during the Great Depression. She goes out for the lead and ends up becoming a star. It’s really about the magic and the excitement of musical theater and what that can bring to the world during a time when there wasn’t much else to bring that happiness.

The Current: Now that rehearsals have begun, how is that process going so far?

Jeremy Shpizner: So far, they have staged almost all of Act 1. Essentially right after the cast is chosen, we immediately go into rehearsing the show, no time off. It goes on stage in January so we really have to work hard during the end of Fall Quarter through the beginning of Winter Quarter to get the production on stage and up and running smoothly. By the end of Fall Quarter it should be completely staged.

The Current: How do you come to a final decision for the year’s production?

LM: Last spring we sat and brainstormed for hours about feasible musicals and we ended with a list of about 100.

We then narrowed it down to three, considering the factors we knew we wanted to see like the dancing element and pitched those three to the board of Arts Alliance, finally landing on 42nd Street.

Northwestern’s Dolphin Show Prepares to Take the Main Stage JS: We have a very musically lively campus and that was a big part of us choosing this show. We really wanted to celebrate those aspects, the music and the life we have here.

The Current: What makes “42nd Street” unique from the shows you have done in the past?

LM: One of the most unique things about this show as opposed to other shows is that this is a very dance-driven production and has very spectacular musical numbers that really build the framework of the show design. This has a lot more of the typical big Broadway show-stopping elements that we usually don’t see on this campus.

The Current: Have there been any major triumphs? Setbacks?

LM: Fortunately there have not been any setbacks so far, and it’s fantastic that we can say that honestly. A major triumph for me is our cast. The audition process is long and treacherous for the performers and us, but we are so proud of the people that we got for this cast and crew. We can only hope it continues running so smoothly.

The Current: What are your expectations for the opening in January?

JS: Firstly, we hope to sell out as many shows as we can, so spread the word. On deeper level, theater for us is about story telling. We want to get people into that theater so we can share this one. The scenes have been designed to really convey the messages of the time period and the characters’ personal stories; we want the audience to really feel this.

Making his mark through causes and campaigns

Whether in sidewalk chalk or media headlines, SESP senior Alessio Manti has made his mark on campus. From running in the 2009 ASG presidential campaign to hosting recent protests like Tea Party to Occupy the Rock and In.Tent.City., Manti demonstrates the power of a positive attitude in promoting change, even when the going gets tough.

“One of my life mantras is ‘screw it, why not do it,’” Manti said. “If it seems like there isn’t a good answer to that question, then I will trust my instinct and follow it more or less where it leads me.”

Unlike other students who might take this phrase and use it for mischief, Manti has focused his efforts on finding ways to improve life for his community.

“I feel that every person has an obligation to give to their community if they expect to receive,” Manti said. “If we pour love and care and attention into our communities and surroundings, our nation will prosper. If we choose to remain bitterly divided and apathetic, we’re proverbially S.O.L.” This philosophy shows through in his numerous academic, philanthropic and social efforts on campus, according to students. Though the list is staggering, some of these endeavors include the founding and managing of student services such as MyCat Enterprises, LLC and the Deuce Caboose, involvement in student government and local group protests, as well as the development of a new internship program in his fraternity.

When asked what drives his seemingly endless pattern of activism and innovation, his response was simple — how could you not do it? Despite this simplistic approach, Manti recognizes that progress cannot always be achieved by just going with the flow, as frequent obstacles hinder

advancement on all levels. According to him, these challenges are all part of the process of achievement.

“If you’re willing to make mistakes and to humble yourself enough to learn from an experience, working outside of your comfort zone will lead you to extraordinary places,” Manti said.

In his personal life, Manti has experienced first hand how difficulties have the potential to lead to rewarding experiences — describing his parents’ divorce as one main factor leading to his ambitious attitude and desire to reconcile differences for the betterment of the community.

Sex talk with Felicity Amethyst Ally Wierema’s guide to stealing the look

My friends have been trying to get me to read The Hunger Games for awhile now, and I’m ashamed to say that I still haven’t yet. But now that the trailer for the 2012 film debuted on Monday, I’m starting to feel the pressure.

The film focuses on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) who lives in a dystopian future society and is Effie Trinket from ‘The forced to fight to the death on live Hunger Games’ television. Judging by the trailer, the costumes in the film look incredible, but one in particular caught my eye and not necessarily in a good way. Elizabeth Banks plays Effie Trinket, who wears a shocking pink ensemble from head to toe. This got me thinking about how a lot of people consider wearing pink to be terrifying. However, it can look really great when done well.

I personally own a pale pink blazer, and I consider it one of the most versatile items I own. It’s a great alternative to the basic black blazer and it can easily dress up any jeans and t-shirt ensemble. Lauren Conrad of “The Hills” fame designed a great pale pink boyfriend blazer for her line at Kohl’s. With three-quarter length sleeves and costing only $53, it’s a super practical and classy purchase. Joe’s Jeans also has skinny jeans in a wide range of colors, including pale pink and dark magenta. Pair them with a basic top and flats or heels for a statement look. They run for $158 on joesjeans.com. If a bold pink look isn’t your style, try accessorizing with a pink scarf or headband for something more subtle. Topshop offers a wide variety of pink winter accessories, including a cableknit scarf for $32 in a medium pink. As long as you keep your pink to one article of clothing or accessory, I guarantee you that you’ll wind up with perfect Effie Trinket-inspired look that in no way overdoes it.

The war on sex has got to stop. I’m getting tired of watching it happen. Even stupid remarks by small people are getting less funny. Like Ben Cochran, a columnist for the East Carolinian at ECU, bitching about how he had to wait to see a doctor at the student health center because some slutty tramps were filling their apparently massive birth control prescriptions. “Not even porn stars need that much birth control,” was this young man’s astute observation.

Little does Cochran know that whether you’re screwing your husband exclusively or you’re the Gangbang Championship record holder (Lisa Sparks won this title with a record 919 men in 2004), you really only need one pill a day. Pretty trippy, right?

But it’s not like skipping on protection is going to please the crowd, either.
