TUCKED AWAY IN NORTH CENTRAL IDAHO AND SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON, the Palouse is an area unlike any other. The gently rolling hills of wheat, barley, lentil and dry pea fields, and natural forestlands are home to many communities with Moscow, Idaho and Pullman, Washington as the main hub cities. COMMUNITY SPIRIT These vibrant communities are home to friendly people, world class Universities, and unparalleled natural beauty. Residents enjoy “big city” access to the cultural and recreational events provided by two university cities, while experiencing the charm and safety of small towns with a mild climate, clean air, highly rated schools, and a low crime rate. NATURAL BEAUTY Four very distinct seasons allow for a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities that are within a day’s trip of Moscow or Pullman; including mountain biking, hiking, telemark and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, golfing, garnet digging, and white water rafting. UNIVERSITY TOWNS Home to three universities, the University of Idaho, New Saint Andrews College and Washington State University, Moscow and Pullman serve as hubs for the highly skilled and educated work force of the Palouse. Merchants offer an extensive selection of quality products and services, making these cities a retail center where people from the surrounding areas come to shop. ENJOY! To the visitor, this is an undiscovered paradise, offering an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities, theatre and arts, and sportsmanship at its finest. This visitor’s guide illustrates many of the hidden treasures and great adventures the Palouse has to offer. We invite you to experience the Palouse region for your next getaway… PULLMAN www.experiencewa.com

MOSCOW HISTORY Settlers were first drawn to the area in 1871, with abundant grassland and available timber for building the area was first named “Hog Heaven” which was later changed to “Palouse Valley.” In 1877, Samuel Neff filed for a postal permit under the name of Moscow because the area reminded him of his hometown of Moscow, Pennsylvania. In 1875, the city’s first store was opened on what is now Main Street. Moscow grew with the arrival of the railroad in 1885. The town became incorporated in 1887 and was chosen as the site for a land-grant institution, the University of Idaho, in 1889. Idaho achieved statehood in 1890.

COMMUNITY Today Moscow is home to 22,000 residents and students. The area boasts a highly skilled and educated work force employed by Moscow’s many thriving businesses and the University of Idaho. Merchants offer an extensive selection of quality products and services. In addition to Moscow’s fine business and educational reputation, the city’s arts community has gained national attention. The Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival, Festival Dance, Idaho Repertory Theatre, Renaissance Fair, Rendezvous in the Park, Artwalk and the Prichard Art Gallery are reasons why Moscow is known as the “Heart of the Arts.” Moscow has also been rated as one of the “Best 100 Small Art Towns in America.” www.visitidaho.org MOSCOW

PROFILE

PULLMAN HISTORY In 1881, Daniel McKenzie, Bolin Farr and Orville Steward applied for a postal permit under the name of “Pullman.” One theory is that the adopted name came from George Pullman, the king of the great railroad sleeping car. Pullman’s artesian wells soon attracted newcomers to the area and the community grew with six businesses and professionals who encouraged Washington State College to locate in Pullman in 1890.

COMMUNITY Today, Pullman supports a diverse population of more than 27,000 residents and students of Washington State University. Pullman is rich with culture, arts and sports activities comparable to that of a big city. Stop in a few of Pullman’s unique shops, galleries, and boutiques or attend one of their seasonal community events including the National Lentil Festival or Holiday Festival.

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY Pullman is fortunate to be home to Washington State University. As Washington’s only land-grant university, WSU conducts internationally respected research and is dedicated to the preparation of students to be leaders in their profession and society. WSU houses 10 colleges including the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, named after the distinguished broadcaster, journalist and WSU alumnus. Call 888–GO–TO–WSU for tour information.
