The Salvation Army has once again begun its Angel Tree to assist more than 650 families this year in providing toys and clothes for Ellis County children this Christmas.

People have described Leonard Sullivan as a giving person willing to help anyone in need. Sullivan passed away on Oct. 27 leaving behind a community that is grateful for his time and service devoted to it.

Sullivan was a longtime resident of Waxahachie, born June 10, 1915 in Goldthwaite, Texas. Sullivan He was raised in Texas and Minnesota, where he was a graduate of Long Prairie High School and the University of Minnesota.

He and his family returned to Texas in 1956 and settled in Waxahachie.

Sullivan was a life-long Rotarian and he took great pride in his service and dedication to the club. He was also a Mason, and in June 2010 he received the 70th Year Masonic Service Award.

Walker’s Texas Division

EDITOR’S NOTE: In commemoration of the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, Midlothian resident Karen Esberger has written a two part series of historical facts relating to the War Between the States.

• Last of Two Parts In late 1863, Walker’s Texas Division was sent to Simmesport, La., to watch the Red River area for invading Yankees.

The winter of 1863-1864 was unusually cold but the soldiers stayed true to their cause, even when caked with mud and shivering under wet blankets.

Their wives, children, and communities still needed shielding.

The men fished while waiting for construction of a pontoon bridge to cross the Atchafalaya River.

Then they reached the Mississippi levee where they prepared artillery near the west bank. The artillery and sharpshooters on the levee created anxiety and dread even though few boats sank.

The Rebels’ audacity caused Yankees to think twice about passing by.

To relieve boredom, the commanders set up contests in January such as best drill. The 11th usually won within Randal’s brigade. However, they faced Hawe’s brigade champion, the 12th, on Feb. 13, 1864 and were finally defeated.

In the spring of 1864 new plans were set in motion by the Yankees. They would march from New Iberia, La., to Alexandria where Federals from Vicksburg would meet them. Then a war fleet of over 60 boats would move up the Red River. Fort DeRussy would be on the way so the Greyhounds dug in there, per General Smith’s orders.

CSA Generals Taylor and Walker opposed that plan. The expected attack occurred. There was no way to save DeRussy.

The Yankees who dismantled it said it was the best construction they had seen. And that’s why a two-hour fight was necessary to subdue it.

Yankees had to assault DeRussy three times before it fell. And that was when Yankee gunboats finally arrived after time spent pulling apart Walker’s logjam and other obstructions six miles downstream.

Then Walker and his men hurried toward Alexandria to battle Yankees there and were ordered to LeCompte, La. Walker had had foresight to establish commissary and forage depots that way.

So they were able to move on from LeCompte toward Natchitoches and reach that city ahead of the Yankees on March 1, 1864.

About this time, James Henry Kay, this author’s cousin, died of an unknown cause.

On March 22, Walker faced a very hard retreat up the Red River Valley due to their supplies being sent ahead to protect them from the Yankees but getting too far ahead.

The Confederates did not have enough food left with them and delay was caused by having to guard the mules’ corn from the soldiers.

Mounted Texans met the division near Pleasant Hill, La., on April 1. General Taylor chose to fight at Mansfield, 22 miles north of Pleasant Hill, before the Yankees reached the river ways where it would be easy then to enter Texas.

On April 8, the two armies formed up along a three mile arc in a small open area between two narrow roads. There they stood 2-3 hours while the two cavalries skirmished.

The Federals wouldn’t attack, so General Taylor did so. Randal’s Greyhounds, on the right end, advanced “en echelon” across a smoky field.

Taylor’s high expectations were more than met by the Texans vigor, energy and unsurpassed daring.

Federals were routed till reinforcements arrived. However, all battling ceased at dark and Banks retreated 18 miles during the night.

The federals were short of water because the Confederates occupied the ravine and creek, sources of water. Half of the Greyhounds had never

been in battle before but they played a large part in turning back what became the last Federal campaign toward Texas.

Pleasant Hill, La., was a tiny town and could not support so many soldiers for very long. However, the Yankees there were poorly organized and very tired since the battle at Pleasant Hill was fought the day after Mansfield.

So when Taylor attacked at mid-afternoon on the 9th the battle was at a stalemate by dark.

It was a tactical Confederate victory. The Greyhounds gave their best and fought well, in spite of being so tired.

Mounting the attack necessitated their crossing open ground, doublequicking toward cannon and musketry. But they were led by generals who knew how to fight, and they were still defending their homes and families.

General Taylor wanted to pursue the Yankees but General Smith decided they would not.

In all, the combined military and naval campaign up the Red River lasted only 72 days, from March 12 to May 20, 1864.

Then the Greyhounds received their pay and were able to rest awhile at Minden, La., before leaving for Arkansas again in late April.

On June 17, 1864, General Walker was reassigned to the District of the West. The soldiers had been confident under his leadership; indeed, he had led them through every battle thus far. Walker was to replace General Taylor who was sent east and a rumor circulated that the Greyhounds would also be transferred east of the Mississippi.

Actually it was more than a rumor. General Bragg, military adviser to President Davis, had so ordered that most of the Trans-Mississippi infantry be sent to the east side of the river.

When the soldiers heard about Bragg’s order on Aug. 16, many decided not to go. They had enlisted to protect their families, as they had on the Red River, and crossing the Mississippi would leave their families vulnerable again.

However, most of the Greyhounds came to grips with the move and began preparations.

Soon, however, the order came to suspend the cross-river operations and send the Greyhounds back to Monroe. Their new commander General Forney was very harsh, and

the winter of 1864-1865 was very unhappy.

Religious meetings, sham battles, and drills were conducted at Camp Magruder between Shreveport and Minden, La. On Feb. 18, 1865 the citizens gave the soldiers a nice barbecue.

The Greyhounds headed home March 13, crossing the state line on March 15-17 and marching on to Hempstead, Texas, near their original point of organization.

When they learned that Virginia had fallen, they understood that trying to continue the war locally was hopeless. Now thousands of hungry and armed men were loose in Texas. They had lost three years of their lives.

They raided the quartermaster and commissary warehouses at Hempstead before finally heading home.

In summary, General John G. Walker’s Texas Division was the largest body of Texans to fight in the War Between the States and was the only division on either side that drew all its regiments from a single state throughout the war.

The Greyhound Division was the most formidable and stable infantry organization in the trans-Mississippi Confederacy.

Their greatest campaign occurred in spring of 1864 when they shattered the leading divisions of Union General Banks’ army at Mansfield. They assumed a leading role in turning back the Federal Red River campaign by marching 900 miles in two months, fighting hard in three important battles, and losing nearly 40 percent killed, wounded or missing in only three weeks.

Some experts consider the casualties higher than expected. However, frontal assaults over open ground always led to significantly more costly casualties.

This was true in Texas, as well as Virginia, and every state in between.

That battle and victory prevented many Yankees from joining Sherman’s Atlanta campaign and ended further attempts to penetrate Texas, thus keeping the Greyhounds’ home state safe. The soldiers understood that their performance reflected on their families and communities so they tried to represent the home folks well.

Aunt buried, son still missing

MIDLOTHIAN — A Midlothian family is giving credit to the media for assisting in helping make the funeral arrangements possible for a beloved aunt, while also seeking continued help in locating a missing cousin.

On Oct. 30, the Daily Light, along with WFFA Channel 8 in Dallas, reported a family’s inability to make funeral arrangements for Otelia Clara Shenkir, a Cleburne resident who passed away in a nursing facility in late October.

Wayne Nance and his wife Shannon, of Midlothian, were assisting the family with the arrangements when they discovered that Shenkir’s son Mark Anthony Shenkir was missing.

Although Shenkir left detailed, hand-written instructions for her funeral and had more than

enough funds in her bank accounts at First Financial Bank and Wells Fargo in Cleburne to cover the $8,300 funeral, she did not have a will and the banks would not release the funds until her son, who is on record as her next of kin, authorizes the transaction.

Additionally, the funeral home had initially refused to proceed with arrangements until her Shenkir son authorized the service.

Following the media reports, Nance said both Wells Fargo and Rosser Funeral Home in Cleburne, “went above and beyond to help us provide my wife’s aunt with a proper Christian burial.”

“The entire family wants to express our appreciate to the media, to

Wells Fargo and to Rosser Funeral Home for allowing us to bury Aunt Otelia in a proper, timely manner,” Nance said. “For nearly a week, everyone was telling us their hands were tied and there was nothing that could be done. It’s good to know there are people that still believe in doing the right thing and we want to thank them.”

The ordeal began immediately after Shenkir’s passing.

Although Nance’s wife had been visiting her aunt since she was placed in the nursing facility in mid-August, he said they had had little contact with her cousin.

While trying to locate the cousin, Nance and his wife went to the aunt’s home (where Mark had lived with his mother) and discovered Mark’s wallet containing his driver’s license, all of his credit cards, cash and his cell phone sitting on a desk in

The bees are the buzz

If the bees are on flowers and in the gardens and the number of bees seems excessive it is actually a good thing.

These active and busy bees are storing up food.

Just like the squirrels gather nuts, the bees are storing nectar for the long winter months.

So, what is the buzz at Monopoly Place, the housing addition next to our community garden?

The buzz is the bees busy pollinating, gathering and storing for the cold months ahead. Unfortunately, “Nature at work” has created an unwarranted fear in the neighborhood.

The two hives of bees were placed in the White Rock Local Garden months ago. But the recent food gathering activity has alarmed the neighborhood.

Bees are on the flowers and the shrubs, the neighbors claim they are noticing more bee activity.

According to bee specialist, Pollard, if a complaint would come into her office on bees it is typical to be called this time of year, because the bees are highly active just before winter sets in.

This activity will be slowing down and soon the bees will settle in for the winter.

Donelle and I recognize the need for more bee education.

Yes, there are a few people allergic to bees and for those people we recognize their concerns.

However, we work in and around bees all the time. In the gardens we let the bees tend to their business and we tend our gardens.

Without pollination and without the presence of bees our food supply would be very limited.

While there are other pollinators the honey bee is the most effective pollinator of all plants.

This pollination increases the yield of fruit, vegetable, and flower production.

Pollination increases through honey bees can be enjoyed by neighbors of the bee keeper as well because bees travel up to three miles from the hive looking for food sources.

So, if you notice an increased activity of bees just smile and appreciate the busy bees that are hard at work providing work for the local farmers and gardeners.

Go Band!

Congratulations to the Spirit of Waxahachie Indian Marching Band on an exceptional season, which culminated with a performance in the Texas UIL State Marching Contest Finals Tuesday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

This dedicated group of student musicians, under the direction of WISD Director of Bands Rich Armstrong, has once again shown the pride — and certainly the spirit — of our community.

From the first day of summer band camp, we have watched their commitment and determination to reach a goal of excellence.

All of us who have taken the opportunity to watch them perform know they are outstanding musicians. After watching the complex, difficult choreography of the marching show — while playing an instrument — we also know they are in top physical shape. What many may not know is they are also among the top students academically in each of their respective grades. Many hold leadership positions in school organizations such as student council and National Honor Society, while also being active in their church and other organizations like Scouting and FFA. A high percentage of band students also hold part-time jobs to help pay their expenses. Keep in mind, this is in addition to maintaining their academic course work and the rigors of being part of a nationally acclaimed music program that requires daily practice and rehearsals.

To applaud just their efforts during this year’s marching season would be a gross injustice, for they not only excel on the field, but off the field as well.

From Mesquite to San Antonio, they have represented our community with pride, with honor and with distinction.

They personify the best of what our community stands for and they have consistently shared the Spirit of Waxahachie with the entire state of Texas during each step of their journey.

Thank you Rick Armstrong, the staff, the WISD Band Boosters and the entire Spirit of Waxahachie Indian March Band for representing our community.

We salute you on a fantastic season.

Working together to serve you

any times people have asked me, “What is the difference between a detention officer and a deputy?” The simplest answer is a deputy has powers of arrest and a detention officer does not. A deputy is a peace officer as defined by the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and a detention officer is one who maintains the safety and security of the inmates in the county jail.

The state of Texas requires they both have a state issued license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. To obtain their license they both must pass a background investigation, both must pass a physical exam, both must pass a psychological exam and both must pass a drug screen. The type of training each type receives is where a lot of the difference begins.

In today’s world a detention officer will probably have three to four weeks of formal training, plus on the job training with a training officer. A deputy, who Ellis County Sheriff has powers of arrest and may use deadly force, will likely have 16 or more weeks of formal training plus 17 weeks of training with a field training officer. Each must pass a state administered exam at the end of their formal training to obtain their license. To maintain their license, each must pass the required continued education courses set out by the state.

Your sheriff ’s office is a multifaceted organization that is responsible for a wide array of duties. I have shared information about the jail and dispatch. Now I want to give a brief outline of the different areas deputies are assigned.

The sheriff ’s office, like a city police department, has a patrol division and a criminal investigation division. However, our sheriff ’s office also has a civil section, transport section, warrant section, crime scene unit, court bailiffs, courthouse security, personnel/internal affairs section, communications, an estray unit, I.T. section, jail, an air wing, a reserve unit and the only dedicated full-time narcotics section in the county.

We have been fortunate over the past few years to be able to have major felony offenses reduced to new lows. Some could say, “that is because patrol is catching crooks in the act,” or others may say, “it is because the investigators are catching the crooks sooner and minimizing the time they are on the streets committing crime.” The facts are all the sections provide some type of contribution in making our county a safer place to live.

Let me give you an example. Which part of your body would you be willing to say, “I don’t need this part, go ahead and cut it off?” Who of us thinks we have arms, legs, feet, etc., that we believe to be useless? I doubt any of us have that thought. The sheriff ’s office is like the human body. Many parts make up the whole.

All are important and all parts perform a vital function. Take any one of them away and the whole part suffers.

In 1 Corinthians 12:26 we read, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” (NIV) We have one other vital part to our body against crime. It is YOU, the general public.

Your eyes, your ears and your support are vital in keeping Ellis County a safer place to live.

‘Beyond The Grassy Knoll’ To the Editor, A dreary day in Camelot with silver overcast.

A parade would seem unlikely if the rain should dare to last. No rain shall fall on this parade; they’ve waited far too long. They want to see the magic one more time before it’s gone. The young and dashing leader with his queen there by his side.

A crowd on hand to cheer and wave; to show their love and pride. They lined the streets to celebrate his visit to their town. Unknown to all among their midst a clock was ticking down.

The entourage proceeded on its fateful chosen route. The course would serve the purpose, and provided no way out. The limousines were in a line and open to the air. The storm was bearing down and still the crowd seemed unaware.

Then lightening struck and left them all just staring in surprise.

A sea of happy faces quickly turned to teary eyes. The handsome leader smiling as he gave us his last wave. The plan now executed sent that leader to his grave.

The ones to gain the throne that day assured the storm was done. A dreadful case of one lost soul and one mail order gun. No need to think that it was any more or less than this. We know that’s just what happened, not a single clue we’ve missed. They snuffed out all the evidence and swept it all away. And now our book of history tells this fairy tale today. The people bought the story like a flock of mindless sheep.

And half a century later Camelot is still asleep.

I was just a lad of 10 the day that storm rolled in. And I’m not sure this nation ever was the same again. I’ve never understood the power that keeps the myth intact. That just one man could lay a plan to pull off that attack. I’ve always thought that in my life the truth would be revealed. That justice would be served and that our wounds could then be healed. I know that time will finally show that storm’s destructive toll. One shot that pierced our hearts that

day came from that grassy knoll.

‘New holiday to replace Veteran’s Day!’ To the Editor, This may be a hard sell, but let me suggest a hope-filled look forward (for those who understand what is coming).

As a veteran that served during the Vietnam War in an area of conflict; I only did what anyone would have done in my place. I do not feel worthy of any gratitude from other citizens.

Of course, I appreciate those who share their gratitude.

This Veteran’s Day, we will honor members of the military for their service and more importantly for the great sacrifice many have made to defend freedom and individual liberty; paying with their life and limb.

The new holiday I hope to see in our American future is the celebration of citizen veterans and not military veterans.

In the decades to come, may we celebrate the Citizen Sentinels, the Freedom and Liberty Guard, the Citizen Watchmen & Watchwomen, and the Quick Response Neighborhood Teams that all resisted the “Fundamental Changing of America.”

May we read of the heroic defense put up by individual members of our community that stopped the step by step, inch by inch, emasculation of America. May we share stories of how everyday citizens stopped the mediators of sustainability, social justice, and the new science of “consensus.”

Most importantly, may we sing songs of gratitude for our friends and neighbors who stood firm against the powers of darkness that attacked – both subtly and aggressively — our freedom of religion and our fundamental right See Letters, Page 9A

Responder redoubles but opener runs After the opener bids one of a suit and the next player makes a takeout double, if the responder redoubles, it shows at least 10 high-card points and often a desire to try to penalize the opponents.

So, if fourth hand (the advancer) bids a suit, the opener (unless he can double with length there) typically passes to give his partner a chance to double.

In contrast, what does it mean if the opener bids immediately, in front of his partner?

The answer is that the opener has a minimum or subminimum opening bid with offen-

sive, not defensive, values. An example is the North hand in the diagram. He has only 11 high-card points and a hand that is built for declarer play, not defense. South, a tad disappointed, signs off in three no-trump.

West leads the heart three, and East puts in the eight. After winning with his king, how should declarer proceed?

South starts with only five top tricks: one spade, two hearts and two diamonds.

However, he can hope to win at least six diamond tricks, if not seven. But he must be careful not to play a diamond to dummy’s jack. Then he would fall foul of the foul 4-0 split.

Instead, declarer must finesse dummy’s nine on the first round. Here, he ends with 11 tricks: one spade, two hearts, seven diamonds and one club. But even if East could take the first diamond trick, the contract would be safe.

Finally, note that many experts play an immediate jump rebid by opener also indicates a bare 11 or 12 points, with a hand having even more winners and scant defensive values.

Reducing vehicle break-ins EDITOR’S NOTE: We asked Wess Winn, community services officer and crime prevention coordinator with the Waxahachie Police Department to write a weekly column in an effort to answer many of the law enforcement-related questions posed by our readers. Here’s this week’s column.

Citizens of Waxahachie and anyone who shops or spends time in our city, the Christmas shopping season is upon us again and we always see a rise in burglary of a motor vehicle (BMV’s).

You can help us curtail this.

Please lock your vehicle’s doors and hide your items in your vehicle or take them with you when you get out. This is one of the most common offenses we see in Waxahachie and one that citizens can help reduce.

Most, if not all, were items that were visible to the criminal while standing outside the victim’s vehicle.

I know you have heard time and time again to hide items out of view in your vehicle or take them with you, but some people are just not getting it.

All the criminals have the desire and ability to steal, that is all they know. It is up to us to keep them from the opportu-

nity.

If you remember from my past articles: desire, opportunity and ability make up the crime triangle. The one we, as honest people, can have the most effect on is the opportunity leg.

Please, either hide your cell phones, GPS’, purses and any other items out of view or take them with you.

These are crimes of opportunity and police departments all over the United States have to deal with it. I know it is our job to take these reports and some of the incidents are beyond the victim’s control, but better than 90 percent of all those BMV’s were the result of some item being left in plain view.

I-35E Ellis County rest area to close With the recent opening of new state-of-theart Safety Rest Areas on Interstate 35E in Hill County, the old and outdated rest areas south of Waxahachie in Ellis County will permanently close on Nov. 15.

The new stops along I-35 between Hillsboro and Abbott in Hill County are part of a statewide initiative launched more than a decade ago to replace older rest areas— most of them built in the 1960s—with new facilities that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also provide vastly improved

Along with enhanced safety features, such as security surveillance cameras and an on-site office for law enforcement, each of the new rest areas offer separate car and truck parking, spacious restrooms, vending machines and a visitor’s center with information on weather and road conditions. In addition, the new stops feature walking trails and children’s play areas.

Nance also discovered what appeared to be dried blood on the wall in his room as if a struggle had taken place.

The Cleburne Police Department was called to the home and began an investigation. Nance said the Cleburne Police Department informed him there had been no activity on Mark’s credit cards, bank account or cell phone since mid-August, and there were no reports that he had been stopped by any law enforcement agency.

Nance explained that with Aunt Otelia’s next-ofkin officially missing, both banks where she held checking accounts refused to release funds directly to the funeral home, even though he offered to sign a letter of guarantee to cover the $8,300 service.

The funeral home initially told the family it would not provide the service without Mark’s approval.

Unless they could find Mark, Nance said they were told it could be weeks, if not months before they could hold the funeral service.

“It’s odd that after the Daily Light and Channel 8 started asking questions, things started to change,” Nance said.

Hilda Chapman who worked with Sullivan at Bethlehem Revisited shared McSpadden’s feelings that Sullivan was always willing to help no matter what the job.

Chapman said Sullivan worked behind the scenes quietly not wanting credit for his actions.

A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 1 at the Central Presbyterian Church to recognize Sullivan’s lifetime of service to Waxahachie above himself, his loving dedication to his family and many achievements for the community.

Judge Bush and the Ellis County Commissioners had to make tough decisions about the budget since 2009. Reduced tax revenue had to be carefully managed to provide the most efficient services to the public as departmental staffing and budget cuts were made. The tax rate was increased slightly in 2011 to cover the cost of maintaining essential services to the community, addressing legal obligations; and funding improvements to the public safety that included communications, law enforcement and maintenance.

“My goal as county judge has been to develop and implement policies that carefully manage our resources while optimizing the delivery of services to the community,” Bush noted.

During her four and a half year stewardship, Judge Bush has worked with the commissioners court to guide many beneficial projects through the political process, some of which include: • Upgrading the first responder radio system to improve communications for the Ellis County Sheriff ’s deputies and volunteer firefighters; • Completing construction of the Ellis County Courts and Administration Building, Juvenile Services Facility and the Ellis County Law Enforcement program at WHS. She said the funds from this event have gone to benefit students who need food, Christmas gifts and aid in times of tragedy.

“I have coordinated and organized this event for more than 20 years,” she said. “And we have dedicated the money to the Student In Need program for the past six years.”

In addition, Kriegel said the event allows for members of the community to get a jump-start on their Christmas shopping.

Performers of the Week

EDITOR’S NOTE: Sara Rundgren is a senior member of the nationally-recognized Spirit of Waxahachie Indian Band. Playing flute, she is chronicling the marching band during the 2013 season in their bid to return to the Texas UIL State Marching Band Competition.

Monday, 11.4 The last few months have been stressful and exhausting for everyone in the band, but it is all worth it to be given the opportunity to compete in the State Marching Contest. We left Waxahachie with warm regards from all of our supporters and made our journey to San Antonio.

On the way, we stopped in Round Rock for a few hours to practice. Due to injuries, some members were forced to be replaced, which only gave the replacements one day to learn an entire show. But the band handled all of the last minute alterations with professional efficiency. We practiced for a few hours, then loaded the buses to embark on the last leg of the trip.

After eating and set-

tling into the hotel rooms in San Antonio, the band reloaded the buses and headed for a few more hours of practice. This rehearsal was merely for production runs. After an extremely long day of travel and practice, the band returned to the hotels to get some rest for the biggest day of our marching season.

Tuesday, 11.5 The band woke bright and early at 5:45 a.m. to eat breakfast and load buses. By 6:45, we were Alamodome bound. Our visual and musical warm up before our preliminary performance was slightly distracted, but after a quick scolding from Armstrong, the band locked into the warm up.

Performing under the Dome was surreal. The environment was completely different than anything the band was used to.

Toward the end of our show, the wheels almost came off, but we recovered swiftly.

Knowing that there was a lot of improvement needed for our finals performance, we left the Alamodome to go practice some of the rough spots.

We came back to the Dome feeling more prepared for the next round.

The band was the most focused we had ever been during that warm up before finals. We entered the Alamodome for the second time that day with the determination to give a performance of a lifetime.

And that is exactly what we did. We left our hearts out on the field, and no ranking from the judges could change the quality of our performance.

We came in 8th place out of the 245 4A marching bands in Texas. There was quite a bit of disappointment lurking through the band, likely due to the fact that the last time Waxahachie performed at State, we placed 6th.

The band felt that we degraded, but in retrospect, it is quite the opposite. The 2013 marching band at Waxahachie is the best it has ever been in the history of Waxahachie High School.

Was it upsetting that we didn’t place higher?

Most definitely.

But the energy we left on the field after finals says more about us than any ranking. We can’t control five judges’ per-

ception of our show or how the nine other bands performed. The only thing left to our own devices was how we played (which was spectacular.)

Friday, 11.8 Today’s performance was about proving to Waxahachie that we are better than 8th.

We may not have been awarded gold medals, but that will never stop the band from performing with the sophistication of champions.

Thank you, Waxahachie: The honor we were given to represent the great town of Waxahachie was priceless. We could not have gotten to where we are today without the endless love and support that this community showers us with.

Words cannot describe how fortunate every single member of the band is to be in an environment that is constantly striving to be better.

hope you’ve been reading God’s word and listening for His voice. I wanted to address other questions about baptism: one of them in this letter and the remaining later.

Let me share what I recollect of my own baptism, which occurred several years after I believed on the Lord. I was a student at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., and so was my brother.

We were baptized the same day at the Evergreen Ministries, a small local church that ministered to college students.

‘Serving the legal needs of those who have served’ To the Editor, As the nation observes Veterans Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who valiantly have served our country protecting our rights and sacrificing so much to protect our freedoms. All too often, returning veterans face financial hardships that make protection of their rights and access to our justice system difficult for them and their families.

Over the past four years, Texas lawyers have contributed countless pro bono hours and more than $1.4 million to assist in providing legal services for veterans – in a state with one of the largest veteran populations. Lawyers have come to the aid of veterans who are wrongly denied critical medical care, disability and other benefits, or need help with family matters arising from deployments. And sometimes, lawyers have saved veterans from being on the streets.

The Texas Access to Justice Foundation, the largest state-based funding source for legal aid, recently awarded more than $426,000 in grants to 11 Texas legal aid providers to help provide civil legal services for low-income veterans, including Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas. An estimated 6,700 veterans received legal aid from grantees of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation last year. Money raised by lawyers and corporations at an annual gala sponsored by the Texas Access to Justice Commission contribute significantly to these efforts.

In addition to monetary donations, Texas lawyers – through the Texas Lawyers for Veterans Program coordinated by the State Bar of Texas – have donated thousands of hours in pro bono assistance at clinics held throughout the state. More than 10,000 disadvanted veterans have received help through this program since its inception.

As lawyers, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of a great many veterans — and in the families of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who did not return. As a former Marine, I’m proud of the work of my fellow lawyers in serving the legal needs of veterans.

Straus statement on election Texas Speaker of the House issued the following statement following Tuesday’s statewide election: “The Texas economy took a big step forward tonight.

This vote will allow communities across Texas to secure the water resources needed to foster private-sector growth and economic opportunity. Job-creators will know that Texas has the water supply they need, and towns and cities will be better prepared for prolonged drought conditions.

“This vote proves that the people of Texas will support leaders who are willing to make difficult decisions.

Perry statement on President’s visit to Texas AUSTIN, Texas – Gov. Rick Perry issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s visit to Dallas to promote Obamacare: “President Obama deceived the American people by

‘On voter ID laws’ To the Editor, There is much debate about whether state voter ID laws are constitutional. Those who oppose laws requiring some sort of picture ID in order to vote claim such is both discriminatory and unconstitutional because it violates a person’s “right” to vote. So what does the Constitution have to say about voting?

First, although there are four places in the Constitution that speak of voting as a right, it must be understood that in context the “right” to vote is not truly a “right,” but rather a “privilege.” A true “right” is that which is “inalienable” and does not come from man or governments of men and therefore cannot be taken away (e.g., “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”).

The “right” to vote has not always been extended to everyone and today can be taken away for example if one is a convicted felon.

Second, in the Constitution’s discussion of “privileges,” the 14th amendment states that “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States…”

Notice that the privileges are those available to citizens.

Third, wherever the Constitution touches on the subject of voting, it is always in connection with those who are citizens: • Amendment 15: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied…on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

• Amendment 19: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied…on account of sex.”

• Amendment 24: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote…shall not be denied…by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.”

• Amendment 26: “The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older to vote shall not be denied…on account of age.”

Two exceptions to the above may be argued, but to no avail: • Article I, Section 2: “The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen…by the People of the several States…”

• Amendment 17: “The Senate…shall be composed of two Senators…elected by the people…When vacancies happen…until the people fill the vacancies by election…”

These two supposed exceptions are not exceptions at all, for the other quoted amendments clearly define who among the people shall have the privilege to vote, and, in each of those cases, those persons are citizens.

Thus, I would argue that proving you are a citizen of the United States is neither discriminatory nor unconstitutional but rather is very much in line with the precepts of our Constitution. Those who would argue otherwise are simply seeking a way to extend privileges of citizenship to those not deserving of them. This is why we have voter ID in Texas as do several other states, and Tuesday’s election process indicated that it works.

‘On the GOP’ To the Editor, Is it just me or is there a concerted effort among the Libertarian wing of the Tea Party Division of the Local Republican party to cannibalize their more traditional Republican brethren and sisters? Following the national trend recently exampled by the R.N.C., we have seen recent letters in the Daily Light using Magnablend as a springboard to jump on the incumbent county officials up for re-election.Those authoring the letters include one who is seeking one of those positions while the other uses scenarios to bring question to the judgement of those they wish to lay on the political table and devour.

Pass the salt.

It brings up, by their claims however, the judgement of those with the knives and forks. The examples they give shows not only their lack of having anything positive to offer, other than not being the incumbent, but their ability to understand the reality of the incidents mentioned.

Them suggesting that Magnablend being at fault for a truck turning over and the present commission members being tied to that is ludicrous. Any one who knows anything about large trucks knows the safe operation

Like most ceremonies or events, baptisms can be fraught with mishaps and embarrassments, though I’ve never seen anyone go down and not raised back up!

Those baptized are sometimes invited to quote a favorite verse, or profess their newfound faith. It is a beautiful thing to witness the joy and love of the new believer, and their expressions of faith and gratitude to God. One young child enthused before a couple hundred worshippers that he wanted to be, “a server

of God!” His declaration elicited tears and very likely renewed commitments to the Lord, in young and old alike, and made me reconsider the depth of my commitment to serve God. I’ve never forgotten it, and I pray he will never turn back.

of the vehicle lies squarely on the shoulders of the driver. The securing of the load on any truck is also the responsibility of the driver. Magnablend did not own these trucks only contracted with the carriers to move their product. To insinuate that somehow that a commissioner or judge had a hand in driving those trucks is a stretch of even the most inventive imagination. To use these as examples why some shouldn’t stay in office proves nothing. But it does prove a lot about the qualifications of those wanting your vote to replace them.

Keep the fear mongering. Keep the proliferation of supposed guilt. There is nothing to substantiate their claims. If these candidates truly have concerns for the safety and well being of those who live near Magnablend, which by the way is not going anywhere, where are their plans or even ideas to help improve the roads to the much maligned facility? Have they even tried to contact management at Magnablend to help with the costs of new roads? Time to quit talking and start walking.

I haven’t seen anything. Only the negative comments on those whose offices they seek. It is only the opinion of a humble described liberal Democrat void of character, but it seems that those using the TEA (remember when that meant Taxed Enough Already instead of Trashing Everyone Again) bags as floaties should stay out of the deeper political waters and remain in the shallow end until they have something to support them sufficiently.

Their recent letters proves they do not.

In closing let me state that I have nothing against anybody seeking any office. It would be not American to suggest otherwise. But we should elect someone on the basis of their integrity, not on a planned, coordinated assassination of that of another.

Cruz Statement on potential U.S./Iran deal to lift sanctions WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) expressed grave concerns Friday regarding reports that Secretary of State John Kerry may strike a deal to lift economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for an agreement for that country to temporarily halt its uranium enrichment program.

“If the reports are correct, this is a terrible deal, and it is dangerous for America. The prospect of Iran acquiring nuclear weapon capacity is the gravest national security threat we face, yet it appears that this ‘deal’ does not require Iran to dismantle even a single centrifuge or turn over even a single pound of enriched uranium.

To lift economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for an amorphous promise to pause their immediate efforts to acquire nuclear weapons makes no sense whatsoever. It is almost surely unverifiable, and lifting the sanctions will only encourage Iran to surreptitiously continue to develop nuclear weapons--weapons that, if acquired, pose an existential threat to America and our allies.

“The United States should negotiate from a position of strength, not weakness. We should have insisted on good-faith measures before meeting with the Iranians directly, such as the release of Pastor Saeed Abedini and the acknowledgment of Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu has taken the extraordinary step of condemning what is happening in Geneva as a ‘very, very bad deal.’ President Obama should not abandon our friend and ally Israel, and he should not cut a deal that endangers the national security of the United States.”

From World War II veterans to present-day members of the military, there was a visible connection that transcended time, geography or branch of service.

“Semper Fortis – always brave.”

The words didn’t need to be spoken to be heard and understood.

But they were echoed in the appreciation expressed by each member of the community in attendance.

“This is an awesome crowd that is out here today. I think that it gets larger and larger each year to honor our veterans. I think it shows them how special they are,” Martha Hice said with emotion in her voice. “My husband J.L. is a veteran. He is totally disabled and can no longer come, but I come to stand up for him. I appreciate all of our veterans, and I love my husband for what he did. I come to honor him.”

Opening the ceremony was a presentation of the colors by the Boy Scouts and Troopers with the Texas DPS. Following the presentation the audience was entertained with a musical selection of “Tennessee Waltz” and “American Solider.”

Following the two songs, MC Ken Roberts asked the audience that during the playing of the “Armed Forces Medley” medley veterans stand and be recognized when their branch’s song was played.

During the ceremony, veterans who took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France during World War II were highlighted. The 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings that took place on June 6, 1944 will be in 2014.

Lt. Col. Henry Drozd spoke to the audience about the invasion, saying one of the elements of the invasion was the role of Army Air Force pilots and

“We (the Daily Light staff) feel it’s important to help those in need,” Harris said. “That includes the seniors whose names are on the tree as well. This is also an opportunity for the community to come together and help meet the needs of others.”

Assisting Harris again this year is Circulation Customer Service Representative Beth Kerr. This is Kerr’s second year helping to host a tree instead of just adopting angels, as she does every year.

“I believe every little kid deserves to open a present on Christmas morning,” Kerr said. “But times are hard and without this program, that wouldn’t

the airborne troops played in helping to secure key positions from the Germans.

Veterans who took part in the invasion were asked to stand and be recognized for their contribution.

Each conflict — from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan — was recognized and veterans were asked to stand during a slideshow presentation.

When Vietnam veterans were recognized, Roberts told the audience that while the past can’t be undone, “we have an opportunity to make it right today,” he said, referring to the negative treatment they received after coming home. The audience applauded.

The service of Joel Ramirez was also recognized during a special tribute. Ramirez, who grew up in Waxahachie, was killed in action in 2011 while serving with the Army in Minroz, Afghanistan. His family, along with members of the Army, placed a special wreath in his honor in front of the auditorium.

DPS Troopers performed a 21 gun salute, which was followed by a playing of “Taps” by DPS Sgt. Robert Bernard.

Navy veteran Bob Garrett said this ceremony is a great way for residents of Ellis County to express their appreciation to those

“There are a lot of different things that veterans go through. Not everybody comes back with a visible wound — but they all come back with wounds when they have been in war,” Garrett said. “I think that this (ceremony) helps to support them.”

World War II Navy veteran Bob Osborne said he loved the ceremony and enjoyed every part of it, adding the ceremony helps to remember the contributions of so many.

“I was in from 1943 -1946. They took me out of high school. I was in my senior year and they said ‘come on.’ I had to go and I stayed in ‘till the war was over,” Osborne said. “I went from one end to the other and made all the major islands (during the battle for the Pacific).

I lost a couple of good

friends in the war, some were my neighbors.”

Osborne served aboard the USS Chester, which saw service at Iwo Jima, Saipan, Tinian and Aleutian Islands. The Chester supported the landing troops with an artillery bombardment. Osborne said after providing fire support during one of the battles he remembers standing underneath the eight inch guns and hearing shrapnel bounce off of them.

Marine Jose Constancio, of Waxahachie, attended the ceremony for his first time and was honored.

“I thought it was absolutely amazing. Half the time I just got this feeling in my stomach that made me feel even better about what I am doing,” Constancio said. “Every year that I am home I will definitely attend again.”

Kerr added that she thinks it’s great that the Salvation Army decided to include the elderly in their program.

“Our forgotten angels are just as important,” she said. “A lot of the elderly are placed in nursing homes and left there not to be remembered or attended to. It saddens my heart when I hear about something like that happening. And I don’t want to see the elderly forgotten are tossed aside when it comes to the holidays.”

For those interested in helping an angel or forgotten angel in need this Christmas must see Harris or Kerr upon taking one from the tree.

The Daily Light is one of several businesses in the community participating in this year’s Salvation Army Angel Tree program.

Angel tags may be taken

from any of the trees at participating businesses and gifts returned to the location from which the tag was taken.

Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army’s highest profile Christmas efforts.

The program was created by the Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Va. shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmastime.

The program got its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their needs on Hallmark greeting cards that featured pictures of angels.

They placed the cards on a Christmas tree at the mall to allow shoppers to select children to help. Because of the Whites, who were assigned by The Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700

children had a brighter Christmas that first year.

Three years later, when the Whites were transferred to Nashville, Tenn. the program was launched in the Music City. WSM radio, which airs the Grand Ol’ Opry, came on board that year as the first Angel Tree co-sponsor in the U.S. Because of the on-air promotion on WSM in Nashville, as well as national publicity on CNN and the Larry King Show, news of the Angel Tree program spread across the country.

In the Metroplex, the program includes Angel Trees in 10 shopping malls and on-site at more than 300 area corporations, churches and organizations. The local communities have gotten fully behind the Angel Tree program, making it possible to help more than 50,000 North Texas children and seniors each year.

serving on the Waxahachie Education Foundation Board of Directors, Waxahachie Independent School District Long Range Planning Committee, and the Global High Administrative Planning Team, which oversaw the development of a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Academy for WISD. Locally, Judge Bush serves on the Board of Directors for the Ellis County Gingerbread House Children’s Advocacy Center, the Ellis County Juvenile Justice Board, and as an Advisory Board member to the Waxahachie Economic Development Committee and to the Midlothian and Waxahachie Chambers of Commerce.

Regionally, Judge Bush chairs the Elected Officials Committee for the Region

At the state level, Judge Bush is a Governor’s appointee to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department Board of Directors.

She has lived and worked in Ellis County for the past 25 years and has two children. Her son Adam is a former member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets and a graduate of Texas A&M University; and her daughter Hannah is a student at the University of Texas at Austin.

pay tribute to more than 150 veterans through musical performances, video presentations and words of kindness by the WHS Choir, the WHS Wind Ensemble and the Future Farmers of America Chapter of WHS’ Ninth Grade Academy.

Jeff Kyle, a former U. S. Marine and brother of famed sniper Chris Kyle addressed the hundreds in attendance. Jeff not only touched on his eight years of military service, which included two combat deployments in the Middle East, but he explained the mission of Heroes Project and why they need community support.

“Our goal is to provide veterans with free in-home fitness equipment, personal training and life coaching,” Kyle said. “When you’re in the military, there is a certain standard and way of life that you become accustomed to. Once you’re relieved of those duties, you have to readjust your life, and for many veterans that’s a difficult thing to do.”

He said fitness is a major component of being a soldier, and when veterans find their way home, they have a difficult time adjusting because that component begins to fade.

“It’s important for us to maintain the fitness aspect of who we are,” Kyle said. “And for many soldiers, it’s what keeps them going.”

Kyle also spoke about the mental and emotional issues that soldiers struggle with once they return home. He said that is why it’s critical for Heroes Project to offer a mental component to what they do.

“Being in combat, losing a fellow soldier and seeing the things that we see on a regular basis serving our country can be mentally and emotionally draining,” he said.

“Once we’re back home, we have to find an outlet to be able to talk about those things so that they don’t overtake us. That’s why we provide life coaching, so the men and women can have someone to talk to about their problems.”

Heroes Project is also a way for Jeff and Aho to say thank you to the men and women who have sacrificed so much. Jeff said his brother Chris put it best when he said, “the smallest random acts of kindness can be among the most meaningful ways for Americans to thank military veterans for their sacrifice. Whether you want to mow their lawn, babysit so they can go on a date or take a nap, or cook them a meal – if you just show them ‘thank you,’ it means a whole lot more than just saying ‘thank you.’”

Sen. Birdwell is a retired U.S. Army officer currently representing Texas Senate District 22.

He was on hand to share his experience, including his harrowing tale of survival during the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.

“I very much appreciate the invitation to be with you today,” Birdwell said.

“I really appreciate the History Channel spon-

soring this and for its commitment to veterans.

I want to reflect a little bit on what it means to be a veteran.”

Birdwell said when he thinks of what it takes to be a veteran three words come to his mind.

“When I hear the word veteran, I think valor, courage and sacrifice.

Each of these words have a special meaning to me.”

As he addressed the audience, he said many of them were too young to remember John Wayne, and although his movies were fictitious, they always managed to bring out a very important theme. He said one of his favorite quotes from Wayne was about courage.

“John Wayne said, ‘courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway,’” Birdwell said.

“That’s exactly what the men and women who serve in our military face everyday. Many of them have faced difficult things and they have face those things with much courage.”

Birdwell said soldiers love our freedoms, liberties and our country enough to face deprivations without hesitation.

At the end of the program, Charter presented a $10,000 check to Heroes Project to assist in its efforts.

From class visits to school assemblies, these events provide a way for students to learn more about the history of Veterans Day. Inviting veterans to share their stories connects generations while helping young people learn about the past.

O’Daniel said one of the common repairs that he and his technicians do for customers is to lubricate the moving parts on the door. This can include the lubrication of the hinges, springs and end bearings.

Lubrication is important because dirt and grime can become trapped inside these moving parts. Other common issues are the door safety sensors falling out of alignment.

“The least inexpensive door is $350, which is a small single-car garage

door that is uninsulated with no windows,” O’Daniel said. “I have some doors that get on up there in the $5,000$10,000 range. It is up to you on how much you want to spend. We offer a price range that will fit about any budget.”

Overhead Garage Door also offers a full-year warranty on service or repair where parts are replaced.

Most of the new doors have a lifetime warranty.

National Philanthropy Day is held nationwide to honor private foundations, corporations, clubs and individuals from across North Texas. Over 500 people were in attendance at this year’s event. This year’s honoree for Mealson-Wheels, Walmart Distribution Center was chosen because of the employees’ dedication to their community.

Lions’ big plays too much for Indians Ennis racks up 677 yards of offense in 61-28 rivalry victory

Anything can happen in a rivalry game.

Friday’s Battle of 287 between Waxahachie and Ennis became a game of catch up for the Indians really quick.

The Indians trailed 21-0 after the first quarter and never could catch the Lions in the 61-28 loss.

“They were a better football team obviously. They have three or four D1 guys that are better than anything we’ve got,” Waxahachie football coach David Ream said. “We’re a year away from being a better football team. We had to play the perfect football game tonight and we didn’t do it.”

Ennis had 12 rushes for 156 yards and two touchdowns by Baylor-commit Terence Williams and quarterback Devin Smith completed 11 of 14 passes for 187 yards and four scores.

Ennis had already clinched the district title the week before, but wanted to make sure it fin-

ished undefeated.

“It got a little chippy at the end. After last week’s emotional game, our guys were edgy,” Ennis coach Jack Alvarez said.

“But they should be on the last game of the year. We wanted to finish our season strong.”

Ennis didn’t finish strong last year and after winning its first eight games, lost its last three.

“We started 8-0 and got beat

by Lancaster and Waxahachie.

Lancaster went to state, but we feel like we should have had that one and Waxahachie beat our butts,” Alvarez said. “That kind of bothered us all off season and the kids came out extra motivated because of that.”

Ennis got its revenge against Waxahachie on Friday as it accumulated 677 yards of total offense, 490 on the ground. The Lions averaged 16.34 yards per carry. Big plays helped that number as Ennis had rushes of 72, 75, 65, 83 and 56. Only two of those directly scored touchdowns.

The 72-yard run by Smith

would have been a score if Waxahachie cornerback Rashawn Moser had given up on the play, but he didn’t and hustled down to catch him at the two-yard line. It wasn’t enough as the Lions scored on the next play to go up 14-0 eight minutes into the game.

Waxahachie was forced to go three-and-out on the next drive and four plays later, Ennis was in the end zone again on a pass from Smith to Tre Elliott.

The Indians countered with their best drive of the night, a 15-play effort that took 6:42 off the clock and ended when Trevon Smith ran into the end zone untouched from four yards out. That drew the Indians back to within 14 points, but that was as close as they got.

Ennis scored on its first play of the next drive, a 75-yard run from Williams, and from there on out it was all Lions.

“Their drives are short and it doesn’t take them long to go the distance,” Ream said. “They’ve got a guy going to Baylor and a

guy going to Texas Tech, we’re not going to play with those guys right now.”

Waxahachie had its backs against the wall early and had to go for it on four fourth downs to try and keep up with Ennis and converted just one of them.

“We moved the ball well in the first quarter, they never stopped us, we stopped us,” Ream said.

“The same was true in the fourth quarter. We just ran out of downs sometimes. You get three touchdowns downs, you have to make some kind of commitment.”

Waxahachie had 382 yards of offense and was led by the return of its sophomore running back. Trevon ran 18 times for 146 yards and a score. He missed the last game due to an ankle injury. He seemed a bit hobbled as the game went on, but stayed in the contest.

Waxahachie put together a nice, quick drive to end the first half. Avery Jackson connected with Isiah Parrish for 13 yards then Trevon broke off a 39-yard

run to get the Indians inside the Ennis 10 with 10 seconds left in the second quarter. On the final play of the half, Jackson hit Parrish on an eight-yard post route to make it 34-14 at the half.

Ennis scored on its next three drives to go up 54-14 before the Indians put together another long drive. The Tribe went 64 yards in eight plays and Max McCulloch hit Elijah Brown for a 28-yard score with 6:51 left in the game.

Waxahachie got a little more momentum when D.A. Donalson picked off an Ennis pass and returned it 15 yards to make it 54-28, but one more Lions score sealed the game.

The Indians (2-7, 1-6 in 15-4A) obviously didn’t have a great season, but they do have a lot of youth coming back next year that they can build upon.

“We’ve got some evaluating to do and some mental aspects to look at, but we gave all of our effort in every ball game,” Ream said. “I wasn’t concerned about SEE INDIANS PAGE 2B

MESQUITE — After winning almost 40 games, it takes a special performance to be the best of the season.

But that’s what Waxahachie coach Sandy Faussett thought she saw Thursday night as her Lady Indians dominated McKinney North 25-12, 2512, 25-8.

“I’m really pleased with that. They played really, really well,” Faussett said.

“That was hands down the best they’ve played all year. I’ve been happy with their performance a lot this year.”

McKinney North knocked off Longview Pine Tree in round one and played in a tough district with Wylie and Lucas Lovejoy, but Waxahachie dominated from the first point on.

“That’s a team that is talented. We talked about some things we needed to do and the kids did exactly that,” Faussett said.

One of the biggest improvements for Waxahachie from round one was the

service game. The Lady Indians had 14 service errors in the sweep of Corsicana, but just six against McKinney North. One of the best servers of the night was Sorrel Barnes. She isn’t used to being in that position, but she did really well by serving 15 times in the second set.

“She started to get in a groove. That’s not a role we had her playing in the back,” Faussett said. “She had three aces and when she can get her serves in and step onto the court, she can play some great defense for us.”

Barnes said she doesn’t always like serving and she didn’t know what came over her on Thursday. But whatever it was it helped her serve the best she has all year as she had 21 serves for 18 points “I just get nervous and when I get nervous it frustrates me,” Barnes said. “I was just motivated. I don’t know what it was, but it just flew through me.”

She wasn’t the only senior that typically plays on the front row that had a big

day at the line, Courtney Miller had 13 serves for 10 points. Miller has been back for a couple weeks now from her knee injury and she just gets better and better each time out.

“Ever since she came back, she’s just looked phenomenal,” Faussett said.

“The confidence is there, her jumping has gotten way better and we’re really pleased with her.”

Miller finished with 16 kills, six stuff blocks, six digs and six perfect serve receives.

Joining Miller and Barnes as key players on the front row is junior Lauren Atkins. She came on strong during the playoffs last year and is peaking at the right time again this year.

Atkins had seven stuff blocks and several other tips to keep points alive.

“She looked great tonight,” Faussett said of Atkins. “That’s just the blocks that resulted in a point. That doesn’t count all the blocks she had to just tip balls.”

As a team, Waxahachie

blocked 16 shots and that gives the front row a lot of confidence going forward.

“Me, Lauren and Audrey (Willett) have been working really hard on our blocking and getting faster,” Barnes said. “So I’d say that’s a pretty good wall right there.”

The middle blockers get better by practicing against each other every day.

“We all compete against each other and make each other better,” Barnes said.

“It’s fun practicing against each other. We’ve done a lot of middle on middle drills to get better.”

Faussett knows that front row is going to be key for a long playoff run for the Lady Indians.

“Obviously in the playoffs, that’s something we’re going to need to go a long way,” Faussett said.

The Lady Indians’ (37-6, 13-1 in 15-4A) run will continue at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Wylie (29-12, 12-2 in 13-4A) in Forney.

Cedar Hill tops Midlothian, Maypearl gets in playoffs

CEDAR HILL — The Midlothian Panthers’ defense held firm as long as it could, but it couldn’t hold Cedar Hill off long enough.

Midlothian allowed just 13 points in the first half, but the Longhorns exploded in the second half to roll to a 40-14 win.

The Panthers fought hard in the first half, holding the Longhorns to just 116 yards, but turnovers proved to be the difference in the game.

Midlothian fumbled once inside its own 10-yard line and threw an interception inside the Cedar Hill 10 in the first half for big momentum swings.

Those were the Panthers’ best chances to keep themselves in the game before the flood gates opened for Cedar Hill in the second half.

The Longhorns scored three times on their first seven plays of the second half to pull away.

Cedar Hill added another touchdown in the first minutes of the fourth quarter to go up 40-0.

After being stiffled for most of the first half, Cedar Hill’s offense got going in the second half thanks to steady play by ju-

nior quarterback Justin McMillan through the air and senior running back Larry Hill on the ground.

McMillan completed 10 of 14 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown and Hill ran nine times for 50 yards and a score.

Midlothian finally got on the board in the fourth quarter with the team down 40-0.

Junior defensive back E. J. Muhammad caused Cedar Hill to fumble on a fourth down play and Midlothian recovered it on the 41-yard line. Najee Mustafaa was able to then break away on a 20-yard carry to put the Panthers on the Cedar Hill 21yard line.

Sophomore quarterback Zach Humphreys connected with senior wide receiver Brendan Cornell for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 8:26 left in the game.

The defense got back-to-back stops and the Panthers were able to score their final touchdown of the season with 40 seconds left.

Humphreys led a 10-play, 73yard drive on Midlothian’s final possession of the year.

Mustafaa ran six times for 38 yards, including an eight-yard run to find the end zone. Humphreys completed three of four

passes for 24 yards on the drive.

Humphreys finished the day by completing 13 of 25 passes for 159 yards. A dozen of those catches and 156 of those yards went to Cornell.

Mustafaa led the ground game with 17 carries for 92 yards.

Senior running back Victor Williams also had seven carries for 41 yards rushing.

This was the final game in blue and white for 31 Panther seniors. These players did a fantastic job as they helped lead Midlothian to the playoffs last year and provided great leadership for a strong batch of young players.

Midlothian will return several key pieces of a strong defense, including: Mason Walker, Mason Quinn, Muhammad, Connor Malone and Wesley Smith.

The defense will miss seniors Roman Brown, Quindell Daniels and Tyriq Mustaffa, who were three of the team’s leading tacklers.

A couple of key returning offensive players are going to be: Mustaffa, Nick Quinterro, Humphreys and Keion Sutton.

The returning players learned a lot through the Panthers’ (4-6, 2-5 in 7-5A) campaign in 2013 and will be back motivated and ready to peform even better in 2014.

The Maypearl Panthers played their biggest game of the last three seasons Friday night and came away with a win.

Maypearl won its games in week eight and nine against Ellis County rivals Palmer and Red Oak Life to put them a win away from the playoffs.

The Panthers hosted Clifton as both teams were tied for the final playoff spot in district 122A. The two teams traded touchdowns until late in the fourth quarter when Maypearl was finally able to go up by two scores.

the effort, we just have to become better athletes.”

But Friday’s game wasn’t about the young players. It was the final game in Waxahachie for 30 seniors. For most of them, it was their final football game ever.

Senior lineman Patrick Lawrence is already committed to play football for Baylor, but he wanted to play his final season as an Indian with no regrets.

“It’s been a fun season.

We didn’t have a great record, but we played hard and the guys stayed positive the whole year,” Law-

rence said. “I’m happy for the younger class because they are going to step up.

I just wish we could have done better.”

When you look for leaders on this team, it’s hard to miss Lawrence’s 6-foot6-inch, 250-pound frame and his strong work ethic.

“I’ve been taught since I was younger to always be a hard worker. I owe it to my parents and all the coaches I’ve had to help me get to where I am,” Lawrence said. “It doesn’t come easy. I’ve loved every minute here playing and working with these guys We all played our butts off.”

While players like Lawrence, Parrish and Adrian

Zavala were among the most notable of the seniors on the team, there were dozens more behind them, pushing them to be great.

“Those guys are as good of leaders as we’ve had.

What could have been a sour year, they came in with a good attitude and good effort every day,” Ream said. “We’ve got some guys like Reagan Wallace and Colt Thompson who come after it and worked hard every day.

They didn’t get a lot of playing time, but contributed as much as anybody and are high character kids.”

Lady Indians start season with two victories

The Waxahachie Lady Indian basketball team started its season this week by winning its first two games of the year.

The squad tipped off the season Tuesday at Crowley and won 53-43 thanks to a big fourth quarter. Dawn King led the way with 21 points and Paris Townsend had 19.

Townsend, King and Destinee Pointer each had seven rebounds. Townsend also had five steals and assists.

Pointer had two assists and five steals.

On Thursday, the team travelled to Grand Prairie to play in its first tournament

of the year, the Grand Prairie Classic. In the first game, the team faced North Mesquite and came away with a big 5835 victory. Waxahachie built a 16-point halftime lead and coasted to the win.

King once again led with 25 points and Townsend added 12. Townsend had five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Freshman guard Aarion Copeland had a solid game with four points, four rebounds and three steals.

The team then played a tough 5A South Grand Prairie team in the second round and got doubled up 56-28.

The Lady Indians trailed by 18 at halftime and never recovered.

“I think they intimidated

us a little bit,” Waxahahie coach Lesli Priebe said.

King scored eight while Townsend had seven and Pointer had six.

The Lady Indians finished up the tournament on Saturday, check Tuesday’s Waxahachie Daily Light to see how they fared.

The coach said she is using this first week of games to learn more about her younger players.

“Obviously Dawn and Paris are four-year varsity players and are going to lead the team in the stats, but the younger players are going to get a lot of playing time,” Priebe said. “I’m starting a freshman, a sophomore, a junior and two seniors, so we’ve got to see some things.”

Copeland has really impressed the coach early on.

“She’s the fastest player I have on my team,” Priebe said. “She’s going to be special. We’re still learning a lot about our players, but we’ve got four district games before Christmas, so we better figure some things out quickly.”

The district won’t be easy this year as Red Oak, Arlington Seguin and Mansfield Summit are all in the state’s top-15 and Mansfield Legacy is going to be strong again.

The Lady Indians (2-1) return to the court at 6:30 p.m.

Finley teams end season with two wins FROM STAFF REPORTS The Finley Junior High School Warrior football teams played their final contests this week against Ennis and got a pair of wins and a tie.

The seventh-grade B Team won their game 19-12.

The eighth-grade A team managed to get a 6-6 tie in a tight contest.

The team depended on their defense for a number of key stops on fourth downs.

Defensive linemen Braden Lloyd and Jonathon Perez and linebackers Gabriel Kubankin and Joey Trevino especially played well.

Kubankin and Bryce Salik played well at quarterback to lead the offense.

It was a great season for all of the Warrior teams as they continued to progress and develop into outstanding football players.

Gish scored 14 points last Saturday in the Lions’ 26-21 triumph at Wayland Baptist University.

At 5-foot-9-inches and 195 pounds, the left-footed placekicker nailed four field goals, including the game-winner from 44 yards.

Gish was also good from 37, 35 and 43 yards. The 44- and 43-yard kicks came during the fourth quarter when the Lions overcame a 21-20 deficit.

He added a pair of point after kicks.

For the season, he has split the uprights on nine of 13 field goal attempts. A year ago, he connected on 15 of 21. He has a pair of 50-yarders in his career.

He has booted 22 of 23 extra points.

Mark Singleton of Citizens National Bank of Texas and Jeff Frazier of Vintage Bank provided some interesting and alarming information about their industry.

First they wanted us to know that the community banks in Waxahachie and Ellis County are doing very well. They have used conservative banking principles and are not at risk from poor financial decisions or excessive reaching for risky business. Their biggest risk is over-regulation.

However, the total number of banks in this country has decreased from about 15,000 in 1990 to less than 7,000 today.

Many of these closures result from the overregulation following the collapses about five years ago. Any bank now needs a “compliance officer” and an “auditor” to make sure they do not run afoul of new regulations. These are skilled, expensive employees who do not add to a secure bank’s operation.

There are four megabanks or those “too large to fail” in the U.S. and they control 41 percent of all bank deposits here.

The largest 36 banks control 69 percent of deposits and the largest 82 banks control 82 percent of deposits. That means that the other 6,858 banks, including the community banks, control only 18 percent, or 98.8 percent of the banks have 18 percent of the deposits.

banks could not be investment houses. In 1999, the Gramm-Leach-Billey Act removed these constraints and the sizes of the banks shot up. Unfortunately, the government did not effectively regulate these banks leading to the collapses around 2008.

How badly did the banks err? J.P. Morgan-Chase was fined almost $1 billion and reached a settlement for another $13 billion.

They were still able to pay $38 billion in bonuses to executives last year.

Those are billions with a “B.” Fines levied against the largest U.S. banks in the last two years exceed $100 billion – again with a “B.” In spite of all of this, the largest banks’ market shares have increased.

That means that more and more of us are giving our precious money to those who are being fined because of their irresponsibility and greed. The big bank problems are in all of the newscasts and papers.

Mr. Singleton remarked that if you read in the

Daily Light that he or Mr. Frazier had been fined you would probably be in his office taking your money out of their banks. Both he and Mr. Frazier have difficulty understanding why this double standard exists. The community banks are locally owned and controlled while the national banks get their instructions and send their profits elsewhere.

Last year, everyone received a jar of homemade sage-cranberry jelly as a favor. This year I plan to make herbes de Provence jelly for all.

A few sprigs of basil, fennel, marjoram, savory, thyme, Mexican mint marigold (to replace the tarragon) and a pinch of lavender flowers makes a sweet treat to be served with cheese and crackers.

If you are making a custard pumpkin pie for dessert try adding a fresh bay leaf to the milk, heat and allow to steep for about 15 minutes then remove the leaf and use the flavored milk.

No matter where you celebrate Thanksgiving this year I hope it will be with people you love.

“It took me a while to fit it into my schedule because I have always had a full time job and the classes are all-day Tuesdays and Thursdays (the next Master Gardener classes start in February).

Fortunately, my employer, Sylvan Learning Center, where I was teaching math and science at the time, was willing to work with me so I could take the classes. It was something that meant so much to me.”

Nitrowski has degrees in biology and chemistry, which she has used in many endeavors throughout her intellectual career.

She laughs now that her life has seemed to loop back around to education, starting at Sylvan and now teaching as an instructor at John Bunker Sands Wetlands.

She teaches ecology with many different biology related jobs in between.

I asked her as a biologist what is one of the most important things you have learned from your years as a Master Gardener?

“Oh so many things that I love about biology coalesce with the teachings of the Master Gardeners, it is almost

impossible to narrow down,” she answered, “but basically we teach all of the time-tested methods A&M has developed over the years to increase success in gardening.”

Nitrowski listed those methods, such as knowing your habitation, soil and weather in order to predict a crop or garden’s yield, how to control damage to your plants and many other aspects that are within the gardener’s control.

“Actually one of the newest methods we have encouraged recently to the novice gardener is referred to as Earth Kind gardening,” she added, “which promotes water conservation, reduction of fertilizer/pesticides, landscaping for energy conservation and reduction of landscape wastes entering landfills. It took off with the Earth Kind Roses developed by the Texas Agrilife Extension’s select rose cultivators, which people love because they are so resilient and yield such gratifying results.”

Nitrowski explained that Earth Kind gardening boiled down to using hardy plants that require the least maintenance (with watering or fetilizer), and they will still produce great results because they thrive in our Texas soils.

“We can’t wait to

show off these beauties and many other exciting things we’ve grown using these methods at our huge annual Master Gardeners Expo at the Waxhachie Convention Center the last weekend of March,” she said.

Nitrowski uses mostly organic gardening but refers to it more specifically as “integrated gardening.”

She explained that this type of gardening focuses on identifying different insect species as either friend or foe, and then using this distinction to let them flourish or drive them out, in the advantage of the garden.

“But sometimes in the interest of using minimal pesticide, we just take a hit for the end result,” she said.

“Is this system of careful, qualitative and passionate gardening the reason you think most people come out to the Farmers Market as opposed to their grocer?” I asked.

“Yes, I think people who really care about a fresh, local product will keep coming back once they see what we have to offer” she smiled. “But we don’t do it for the profit. We do it because it’s just what we love to do.”

FORT WORTH – Susan G. Komen Greater Fort Worth Affiliate announced Thursday that the 22nd Annual Race for the Cure, presented by Kroger and held at Ridgmar Mall, will be held for the first time on Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 10, 2014.

Registration for the Race is now open. From 2014 onward, the Race will continue to be held each Mother’s Day weekend.

“We are excited to be able to honor mothers and women everywhere by hosting the event on Mother’s Day weekend,” said Craig Schaefer, executive director of Susan G. Komen Greater Fort Worth Affiliate. “I hope the community will support us and celebrate their own mothers and other women in their lives by registering for the Race and fundraising for the cause.”

The goal of the Greater Fort Worth Race for the Cure is to raise funds to support Komen’s research, education, detection and treatment initiatives for women and men battling breast cancer in the Komen Greater Fort Worth service area of Tarrant, Parker, Johnson and Hood counties.

Since 1992, more than 210,000 people have participated in the local Race for the Cure, raising more than $22 million dollars for the cause. Of that $22 million, $18 million has stayed in the Greater Fort Worth community through Komen grants, and $4 million has

gone towards national research. In the spring of 2013, the Affiliate funded 12 grants to community organizations for a total of $938,000.

By popular demand, the Race course will be reversed for the 2014 event.

“We heard from many participants that the steep hill on Green Oaks Blvd. was tough during the Race,” said Bert Thompson, 2014 Race for the Cure chairman. “Our goal is to make the Race for the Cure not only a great competitive event, but also an opportunity for non-competitive racers, survivors and their families to participate together, so we are reversing the route.”

Registration is now open and can be completed at www.komengreaterfw.org. An Early Bird Registration discount of $10 off registration is available for participants from now until the day after Thanksgiving (before midnight Friday, Nov. 29).

Many participants choose to use the Race as an opportunity for competition, but running or even walking isn’t necessary to participate. Supporters can participate by fundraising or making a donation in honor of another participant or loved one.

community news notes Women’s Clubs Calendar Collections The Waxahachie City Women’s Clubs are once again collecting calendars for the Veteran’s Hospital in Dallas. Last year, club women picked up and delivered more than 700 calendars donated by the community. They were very much appreciated and placed all throughout the hospital and patient rooms.

1 (15-ounce) can Hunt’s Tomato Sauce

1 (14.5-ounce) can Hunt’s Diced Tomatoes with Basil, garlic and oregano, undrained

6 tablespoons Kraft Grated Parmesan Cheese, divided

6 small boneless skinless chicken breasts (1 1/2 pounds) 3/4 pound spaghetti, uncooked 1 1/2 cups Kraft Shredded Mozzarella Cheese Heat oven to 375°F. Pour tomato sauce and undrained tomatoes into 13-by-9inch baking dish. Stir in 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) Parmesan. Add chicken; turn to coat evenly both sides of each breast with sauce. Cover.

Bake 30 minutes or until chicken is done (165°F). Mean­while, cook spaghetti as directed on package, omitting salt.

Top chicken with remaining cheeses; bake, uncovered, 5 minutes or until mozzarella is melted. Drain spaghetti.

2 tablespoons Pure Wesson Canola Oil

2 cups quartered, sliced zucchini

1 (15-ounce) can Great Northern beans, drained, rinsed

1 (16-ounce) jar light Alfredo pasta sauce 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt

2 (14.5-ounce) cans Hunt’s Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes, drained well

1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese Cook pasta according to package directions, omit­ting salt.
