IOWA -3.5
All of the focus from Week 1 has landed on Iowa’s offensive ineptitude. That’s fair. But Iowa’s stellar defensive and special teams units have been lost in the shuffle a bit. This line sat at -6.5 before last week, and Action Network senior writer Collin Wilson makes Iowa nearly an 11-point favorite over Iowa State at home. I’ll roll with the Hawkeyes. Each week during the Iowa football season, Daily Iowan Pregame Editor

Iowa -3.5 seems to be the obvious pick this week. After all, the Hawkeyes have won six consecutive Cy-Hawk games. But upon further examina tion, I’ve decided I like Iowa State to at least cover the 3.5-point spread. Five of the last 10 Cy-Hawk games have been decided by three points or less. Relying on a half point is dangerous, no doubt. But I’m going for it. YTD: $282 YTD: $282
I don’t think I could be paid enough money to take this over. Iowa’s defense proved how ferocious it is last week, and now Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers has to make his first road start in a rivalry game at raucous Kinnick Stadium. UNDER 41.5

AUSTIN HANSON Pregame Editor
IOWA STATE +3.5

PETE RUDEN College Football Editor. Action Network Daily Iowan Alumnus For advanced analysis and statistics, read the full version of The Daily Iowan’s bettor’s guide dailyiowan.comat

Austin Hanson and Action Network College Football Editor Pete Ruden will place three hypothetical bets of $100. The score of the contest will be kept in the piggy banks to the right and left with a winner to be declared at the end of the season. Ruden’s 2022 record: 2-1 Hanson’s 2022 record: 2-1 UNDER 41.5

Like the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Well, I’m going to pick the under this week because the Hawkeyes’ offense is broken, and I don’t know that Brian Ferentz can fix it. Couple that with the Iowa’s stellar defense, and you’ve got yourself a sure-fire under bet.

GEORGIA STATE +7.5 North Carolina’s defense is an absolute mess. The Panthers shouldn’t have a problem keeping up here. USC -9 Lincoln Riley’s offense scores quite often and Stanford doesn’t. I like USC plus the points.

Cy-Hawk returns to Kinnick after four-season hiatus
4 - The Daily Iowan - PREGAME - Iowa City, Iowa - Friday, September 9, 2022
Chloe Peterson Sports Editor Jack Campbell didn’t grow up an Iowa Althoughfan. the senior linebacker is a lifelong Iowan, he was sheltered from the CyHawk rivalry. His father, Dave, played for the University of Northern Iowa football team from 1986-89, so Jack grew up a Panther fan. The Cedar Falls native’s only exposure to the annual Iowa-Iowa State football game growing up was through his“Ifriends.reallyhad no correlation with Iowa, Iowa State, but my friends did,” Campbell said. “I just know from my experience, being from Iowa, like in middle school, in high school, like, it was just a battle between Iowa and Iowa State fans.”Campbell’s rooted investment in the Cy-Hawk series took shape when he joined the Hawkeyes’ ranks in 2019. Campbell’s first experience in the Iowa-Iowa State game was inundated with rain delays in a hostile Jack Trice Stadium. The Hawkeyes barely pulled off an 18-17 victory in Ames after the Cyclones muffed a late fourth-quarter punt. That win was just three years ago. But, with a lack of rhythm in the Cy-Hawk football game’s yearly schedule caused by the pandemic, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz thinks of it as eons ago.“Looking back, historically, we got last year and then, whoa, it felt like 10 years ago, the ‘19 game,” Ferentz said in a Tuesday press conference. “It took 10 years to play, on top of it. But it’s almost like that game, dismiss it, throw it out. It’s just so far back, even though it wasn’t that far back, but the lack of playing every year, it’s weird. It’s strange.”
Few Iowa players have experienced playing Iowa State in the Hawkeyes’ home stadium.

“It’ll be an awesome experience,” Campbell said. “I’m just excited to get another Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. The fans are gonna be loud. So, I’m just looking forward to all that.”

Redshirt sophomore Hunter Dekkers is now the Cyclones’ full-time starter, replacing Brock Purdy. Purdy was a four-year starter at Iowa State, going 0-4 in his career against Iowa. Purdy was benched during last year’s game in favor of Dekkers.Dekkers went 11-of-16 for 114 yards and a touchdown in his backup effort against the Hawkeyes.“He’sreally good at what he does,” Campbell said of Dekkers. “He’s a left-handed quarterback, kind of unique in that aspect, but he’s a very talented player. He can make a lot of different throws. He can use his feet as well. So, just unique in that aspect. And I hope it’ll be a challenge.”Dekkers found immediate success in his first career start on Sept. 3, completing his first seven passes and throwing for 293 yards. Dekkers accounted for four touchdowns in Iowa State’s 42-10 victory over Southeast Missouri State — the most by a Cyclone making his first career start since 1999. Ferentz compared Dekkers to Ken Stabler, who played 17 years in the NFL and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. “The ball still comes out, so you’ve got to defend it no matter where it goes,” Ferentz said of the lefthanded Dekkers.
Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell watches warmups before a football game between No. 10 Iowa and No. 9 Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames on Sept. 11, 2021. The Hawkeyes defeated the Cyclones, 27-17.

Cy-Hawk rivalry returns to Kinnick The last time Iowa and Iowa State played at Kinnick Stadium, quarterback Spencer Petras was a true freshman.“It’sagreat rivalry,” Petras said. “My fourth time in the game, I’m excited to get it at home because it’s been since I was a true freshman since we’ve been at home for this game. So, that’s exciting, but it means a lot. It means a lot to myself, the team, our whole program, the state.” Petras, who is from San Rafael, California, was introduced to the Cy-Hawk rivalry at Kinnick Stadium in 2018, when he heard seemingly never-ending I-OW-A chants from the stands. The fifth-year senior will make his third consecutive start in a Cy-Hawk game on Saturday. Petras went 11of-21 for 106 yards and one touchdown in last season’s game.In the Hawkeyes’ 2022 season-opener against South Dakota State on Sept. 3, Petras completed 11 of 25 passes for 109 yards with an interception. But on Tuesday, the third-year starter didn’t want to talk about the past — just his anticipation for the Cy-Hawk game. “I’m from California, but you know, I consider myself an Iowan at this point, it’s my fifth year in the state,” Petras said. “It’s a big game, the whole state tunes in, and it’s a lot of Petrasfun.”said former Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley, who played for the Hawkeyes from 2016-19, set the tone for him back in 2018. Stanley went 4-0 against Iowa State. This year, Petras is seeking his fifth straight win over Iowa“That’dState be great,” Petras said. “I mean, that’s the goal. Nate and the seniors and the older guys when I was young, you know, they laid the foundation. It’s now our turn to Safetycontinue.”
Jerod Ringwald/The Daily Iowan Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz stands on the sideline of a football game between No. 10 Iowa and No. 9 Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames on Sept. 11, 2021. The Hawkeyes defeated the Cyclones 27-17.

Kaevon Merriweather joined the Hawkeyes in 2018, along with Petras. Merriweather, who has lived in states with strong rivalries, said the anticipation of the Cy-Hawk game is similar in every state. “Being from Michigan, the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry is something that’s really huge,” Merriweather said “I lived in Alabama for a little bit, so AlabamaAuburn is always a big rivalry. I think, whenever you have a state team, there’s always animosity between the two teams.”Nowthat Merriweather has experienced the rivalry, he’s anticipating a packed Kinnick on Saturday. The Hawkeyes sold out the 2018 game, and Kinnick will be filled to the brim again this week. More than anything, Merriweather wants an Iowa victory.“One hundred percent, I would love that,” Merriweather said. “Just to keep that on my career, on my memory bank, that I’d never had the chance to lose to Iowa State.” Cyclones debut new quarterback, running back Iowa State has a unique new aspect to its offense: a left-handed quarterback.
The Daily Iowan - PREGAME - Iowa City, Iowa - Friday, September 9, 2022 - 5
Iowa and Iowa State didn’t play in 2020 — skipping the year the teams would’ve played at Kinnick Stadium — because the Big Ten instituted a conference-only schedule as COVID-19 continued to spread. The Hawkeyes beat the Cyclones, 27-17, at Jack Trice Stadium in 2021. Now, the Hawkeyes and Cyclones are returning to Kinnick Stadium for the first time since 2018. And Iowa, fresh off a touchdown-less, 7-3 win over South Dakota State, has a six-year winning streak to protect.

“A little bit different. He’s got a little Ken Stabler, a little sidearm stuff in there every now and then, too, to get the ball around, so he did a good job. He really looked poised. Made good throws the other day, and they hit some big plays. They’ve got a good group of receivers. Tough to defend. “But the biggest thing, he just looked like he was totally under control and they did a nice job offensively of executing and kept him clean, and he can pull it down and run it, too, when he needs to, but just a really impressive outing.”TheCyclones also lost running back Breece Hall, the two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, who was picked 36th overall by the New York Jets in the 2022 NFL Draft. Redshirt junior Jirehl Brock has taken over Hall’s position, rushing for 105 yards in last week’s season-opener. He was a kickoff returner and backup running back in 2021. Merriweather remembers briefly playing Brock in 2021, when Brock had three rushes for 15 yards. “I got to hit him a little bit, so he definitely is a wellbalanced and solid back,” Merriweather said. “What I’ve seen from him so far, he’s really well-balanced. He can run the ball really well, catch up in the backfield, so he’s definitely a very well-balanced back.” What’s the future of the CyHawk rivalry? Iowa athletic director Gary Barta remembers watching the Cy-Hawk rivalry when he worked at UNI.“I would watch from a distance and it seems like every game that’s played, very, very few are blowouts,” Barta said in an exclusive interview with The Daily Iowan. “Either way, they’re almost always down to the wire. And so that was my first observation then, and as I was here and started experiencing it, you just see the excitement on both sides, whether we’re here in Kinnick Stadium, or over there in Jack Trice.” With the pandemic, the annual matchup has faltered over the past few years. Iowa has played two consecutive Cy-Hawk games at Jack Trice Stadium, and Barta is excited to get the annual matchup back in Iowa City. Iowa State’s senior class entered the program in 2019. So, only 21 players on the Cyclone roster — fifth and sixth-year seniors — have experienced Kinnick Stadium. “It means we’re back into a rhythm, a normal rhythm of every other year,” Barta said. “That was obviously disrupted. But any time we play in Kinnick, our fans make a difference. Having them here, my guess is some of those players, a lot of those players have never played in Kinnick Stadium from the Iowa State side.” Iowa football’s current contract to play Iowa State annually runs through 2025. With conference realignment and the Big Ten adding USC and UCLA in 2024, there has been some speculation surrounding the future of the Cy-Hawk footballDespitegame.a changing college football environment, Barta is committed to playing Iowa State“I’veyearly.said many, many times that, as long as I’m here, I’m going to support keeping the tradition alive,” Barta said. “[Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard] and I are both on the same page when it comes to planning to continue the rivalry. I don’t see any reason — I’m sure it will continue. But we haven’t talked specifically aboutBartait.”said he has a great relationship with Pollard. As long as they are in their respective positions, he said, there will be a rivalry game.“We’re used to working together, and he’s done a great job at Iowa State and I respect him, and that will continue,” Barta said. “On Saturday, certainly, I want to beat him.”

Iowa will be without wideouts Keagan Johnson and Nico Ragaini, cornerback Jermari Harris, and linebacker Jestin Jacobs.
Nico Ragaini was slated to start opposite Johnson on the Hawkeyes’ July twodeep. The senior missed Iowa’s first game of the year against South Dakota State with an undisclosed injury. The nature of Ragaini’s ailment has not been dis closed — though Ferentz suggested the East Haven, Connecticut, product could be on the field in next few weeks.“Nico is improving and gaining ground, so that’s reason to be optimistic,” Ferentz said. “But I don’t know if it’ll be next week, the week after. But some where down the road he’ll be back — I’m confident this month. I think we got time for Ferentzthat.”added sopho more Diante Vines, who broke his wrist at practice in August, is still on track to play in 2022. When Vines, Ragaini, and John son return to the field, the Hawkeyes’ will have five scholarship wideouts at theirBrucedisposal.was the only Hawkeye wide receiver to catch a pass during Iowa’s 7-3 win over South Dako ta State Sept. 3. He hauled in five passes for 68 yards. He also produced the Hawkeyes’ longest play of the game — a 27-yard re ception.Iowawill also likely be without two defensive starters Saturday. Corner back Jermari Harris, who served a single-game sus pension during Week 1, wasn’t on Iowa’s Week 2 two-deep. Ferentz did not provide any details on Har ris’ injury, but he did note the junior is “very doubt ful” ahead of Saturday’s Io wa-Iowa State game.

Iowa has won the last six Cy-Hawk games dating back to Sept. 12, 2015. The last time the Cyclones beat the Hawkeyes in Iowa City was Sept. 13, 2014. Iowa leads the all-time series, 46-22.

Jerod Ringwald/The Daily Iowan Iowa wide receiver Keagan Johnson celebrates a touchdown during a football game between Iowa and Colorado State at Kinnick Stadium on Sept. 25, 2021. The Hawkeyes defeated the Rams, 24-14.
Johnson hasn’t played a game since Dec. 4, 2021. He registered one catch for 13 yards in Iowa’s 42-3 loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship Game in In dianapolis.Without Johnson, Iowa will have just two scholar ship receivers available for Saturday’s Cy-Hawk game: Bruce and redshirt fresh man Brody Walk-onsBrecht.AlecWick and Jack Johnson are the oth er receivers listed in the Hawkeyes’ four-man rota tion at Duringwideout.the offseason, Brecht and Bruce were nev er listed starting receivers.

Sophomore wide receiv er Keagan Johnson was not listed on Iowa football’s Week 2 depth chart. On the Hawkeyes’ Monday twodeep, sophomore Arland Bruce and redshirt fresh man Alec Wick were Iowa’s top two options at wideout. Even after Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz’s Tues day press conference, Johnson’s status is unclear. “He still hasn’t been with the team,” Ferentz said Tuesday afternoon. “He hasn’t practiced with the team. He’s with the team but hasn’t practiced. So, I don’t think, this week, you can expect him.” When reporters fol lowed up about Johnson’s return-to-play timetable, Ferentz said the 6-foot-1, 194-pounder will return to the field “whenever he’s ready.” Ferentz added he hopes Johnson will be on the field soon.
Harris was suspended for Week 1 of the 2022 season because he was arrested on an OWI charge on April 17. Harris was stopped by po lice at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and River side Drive in Iowa City for driving without headlights on. According to police documents, Harris’ blood alcohol content was .096.
Sophomore running back Gavin Williams, who missed Iowa’s Week 1 con test, will likely provide the Hawkeyes with some reinforcement on offense. Ferentz said he has a good feeling about Williams’ ability to play Saturday. “Yeah, hopefully we’ll get him back,” Ferentz said. “I think we’re optimistic there. But we’ll know more here as the week goes on.” The 2022 Cy-Hawk game will kick off at 3:05 p.m. at Kinnick Stadium and air on the Big Ten Network. The Cy-Hawk game hasn’t been played at Kinn ick Stadium since 2018.
The last concrete update Iowa Athletics released with regard to Johnson’s health came ahead of the 2022 Citrus Bowl in Janu ary. Johnson was scratched before the Hawkeyes’ 2017 loss to Kentucky in Or lando with a “non-COVID19-related illness.”
Bruce, who is Johnson’s roommate, also offered lit tle insight on the Nebras kan’s injury status. “I’m just trying to be that voice for him mentally to make sure he’s staying on the right path,” Bruce said. “But, yeah, he’s doing good. And I can’t wait for him to be back out there soon. He’s more of a guy that likes to do stuff in stead of really saying it. He doesn’t have a whole lot to say. A lot of peo ple think he’s like mad or down, but that’s just really how Keagan is. But I know he’s pretty bummed that he can’t be out there with his teammates.”Johnsonwas the No. 1 option at WR on the depth charts Iowa released in March, July, and August.
Ferentz also confirmed linebacker Jestin Jacobs will not be suiting up Sat urday at his Tuesday press er. Jacobs sustained what Ferentz dubbed a “soft tis sue” injury during the Io wa-SDSU game Sept. 3.

Evans ready for hometown team
“He’s a really great friend,” Campbell said. “I’ll start right there, but he’s a first day of class walk-on.” During the COVID-19shortened 2020 season, Ev ans found playing time in all eight matchups. Though his sack total decreased to one, head coach Kirk Fer entz put Evans on scholar ship in December 2020. Ferentz said Evans’ pro gression with the Hawkeyes has been a bit of a surprise, considering his high school football background.

Evans sported the Tiger hawk at his Ames school, with criticism from his classmates’ parents. “I was like, ‘but I love these guys,’” Evans said of Iowa. “This is my team.” Evans was in his redshirt year with the Hawkeyes the last time the Cyclones visited Iowa City in 2018. Now, he’s expected to make his second career start Sat urday.“I’m really excited about that opportunity,” Ev ans said. “Me, being from Ames, finally being able to have them come to Kinn ick Stadium, not having to go to Ames, it’ll be fun. I’m talking to my buddies about what it’s like in Kinnick Stadium and how loud our fans can get.” Evans’ father, Spen ce Evans, was a Hawkeye quarterback in 1989. Evans said his family moved to Ames was because Spence accepted the Ames High School principal post. Per the Ames Tribune, Evans’ family moved to Iowa City to be closer to him and his siblings in 2019. Spence Evans now serves as the principal at Tipton High School. The fifth-year senior, like other Hawkeye defenders, performed tremendously in Iowa’s 7-3 win over South Dakota State in Week 1. As a starter, Evans recorded two of the Hawkeyes’ four sacks — including one for a safety in the fourth quarter. Even as a backup last sea son, Evans wreaked hav oc on opposing offenses. His 14 career sacks are the most among current Iowa players. The seven sacks he notched in 2021 tied for the team lead with defen sive end Lukas Van Ness. Evans was announced as a recipient of Iowa football’s Coaches Appreciation Award in March. “He’s great at rushing the quarterback,” senior line backer Jack Campbell said. “And when he makes a sack, I’m just so excited for him because he works his tail off and he deserves every thing he gets.” Evans was a high school quarterback and lineback er. He walked on at Iowa in 2018 and made the switch to the defensive line When he appeared in his first eight collegiate con tests in 2019, he tallied four sacks and five solo tackles. Evans recorded 1.5 sacks against both Northwestern and Minnesota during his redshirt freshman cam paign.Campbell mentioned walk-ons are treated equal ly in the Hawkeye program. When Campbell joined the Hawkeyes in 2019, he said Evans welcomed him with open arms.
“The biggest thing about Joe, first thing I think about, is just his energy and his tempo,” Ferentz said. “When he’s playing, he does it one speed, and he’s undersized, quote-un quote, undersized, but he’s just worked so hard and really has figured out how to play that position in three, four years’ time here. Gives us a lot of en ergy, a big burst out there, and right now we’re fortu nate we have a little depth so we can rotate guys and keep them fresh. But yeah, Joe has been a great team member and really produc tive football player.” isaac-goffin@uiowa.edu

Higgins: I would definitely say just the Nebraska locker room experience after the win. Seeing Keith Duncan on people’s shoulders, then we put Caleb Shudak on people’s shoulders. So, remaking that memory was pretty fun.
DI: So, I wanted to ask you where you think you factor in at linebacker this year and on special teams. Where do you think things are shaping up for you? Higgins: So, my biggest role right now is definitely going to be making sure that, when my number is called, I’m ready. If anything hap pens, if someone goes down, make sure I’m the first guy in. Special teams-wise, just being a leader in the special teams phases. Making things happen, trying to make some impact plays, just affect the game and really put my touch on the game.

DI: Yeah, let’s say that.

Grace Smith/The Daily Iowan Kid captain Audrey Schneller speaks with head coach Kirk Ferentz during Iowa football’s Kids’ Day at Kinnick in Iowa City on Aug. 13.

Audrey Schneller defies odds to join Hawkeyes
“Honestly, I feel like we got answers back way sooner than I expected us to,” Aman da said. “I didn’t expect it to be that quick. We were really thankful when we got the call that we finally knew what we were dealing with.” Since then, a team of multiple doctors, including Low Vision Specialist Mark Wilkinson, have provided her withWilkinsoncare. said the team has worked with Audrey for the past seven years to strengthen her vision in both eyes. They also discov ered Audrey’s condition was caused by a mutation in the KIF11 gene. Only 13 KIF11 gene mutations have ever been recorded. While her condition is ex tremely uncommon, Audrey has taken it in stride. “It is a very, very rare con dition,” Wilkinson said. “For tunately, you know, right now, she’s doing better than many, which is good. In addition, it’s gotten a little bit better over time, which is also good.” Audrey has had two retinal laser surgeries to ensure her retinas do not detach, and she returns to UIHC multiple times a year for check-ups on her“She’svision.doing the best she can to make her vision the best that it can be,” Wilkinson said. “It’s a big team of people here in the eye clinic who are helping her to function her best and seeing her on a very regular basis. We’re just opti mistic that we’re going to be able to help her maintain her vision.”
Audrey’s vision has im proved so much that, if she continues to strengthen it, she will be able to drive one day, her mother said. “Her doctors tell us every time, because every time we go she improves, and they always say we never expect ed her to do as well as she’s doing today. So, she’s rocking it,” Amanda said. This weekend, the Schneller family will return to Iowa City for Audrey’s debut as the second Kid Captain of the 2022 football season.
‘Oh my gosh, there she is.’ And so we, of course, had to go across the street and get her picture taken with her underneath it,” Amanda said. “It’s cool knowing that, you know, even when we go for her next appointment, her picture will still probably be up.”Kids’ Day was the first Schneller trip to Iowa City that was not centered around doctors, Amanda said. “It was like we were brand new and were like, ‘This is kind of weird not going to our usual stuff that we do but there was a lot of fun,’” she said. “That was a great day.”

Kate Perez News Editor Audrey Schneller has been coming to Iowa City since she was an Whileinfant.thepast seven years were filled with eye exams, this time she’s coming back to town as a Kid Captain. While Audrey has never been admitted to the Uni versity of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital longterm, her mom Amanda said the hospital played a pivotal role in the discovery of Au drey’s genetic eye disorder.
For Audrey, the most excit ing part of being a Kid Cap tain is having the attention on her as she waves to the crowd. Audrey, a dancer, is used to being in front of large groups of people. “I’m going to stand at the center of [the field],” she said. As for Iowa State, Audrey has one message. “Boo, Cyclones,” she said.
The family was referred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after observing Audrey’s eyes fluttering.
The family road tripped from Waukee, Iowa, to Iowa City for the first time when Audrey was three months old. When the family first got to UIHC, Audrey was legally blind, Amanda said. “We did genetic testing through the University of Io wa’s research department,” Amanda said. “So, at that time, they kind of told us you could have answers as soon as a few months, that it could be five years, or you could never get results.” The Schnellers received the results 1.5 years later, learning Audrey had folds in her retinas that caused the poor vision in both eyes.
The 7-year-old is ready to return to Iowa City as the second Kid Captain of the 2022 season not as a patient.
