PREGAME Saturday, November 12 Iowa vs. Wisconsin Kinnick Stadium The Daily Iowan THE ULTIMATE
RECRUITING TOOL

WISCONSIN -1.5

I’ve struggled to read where Iowa’s at since the beginning of October. With Braelon Allen in the backfield, Wisconsin should at least find ways to move the ball at times against this Iowa defense — especially on the ground, where the Hawkeyes rank 53rd in Rushing Success Rate compared to sev enth against the pass.

UNDER 35.5

These offenses have shown they can perform against soft defenses. But when they face a solid unit, they fall relatively flat. With a secondary that ranks seventh in Defensive Passing Success Rate, I don’t think the Hawkeyes will have much of a problem keeping Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz in check.

NAVY +17

WISCONSIN -1.5

A 1.5-point spread is no spread at all. Whichever team wins on Saturday will do so by more than three points — I guarantee it. I suspect Saturday will be a classic kicking derby between the Hawkeyes and Badgers. This game cer tainly won’t be a shootout because Iowa and Wisconsin have inept offenses and solid defenses.

UNDER 35.5

This game has all the makings of a classic Big Ten West showdown. And I’m sure the Sickos Committee will be watching and tweeting about Iowa-Wis consin on Saturday. When the Sickos Committee takes interest in a game, that’s usually good news for under bettors. The Sickos Committee and under bettors both love punts, fumbles, interceptions, and miscues.

Recruiting at Kinnick

How Fran McCaffery, Lisa Bluder, Tom Brands, and the University of Iowa use Kinnick Stadium to bring students to campus.

Kirk Ferentz isn’t the only Iowa head coach patrolling Kinnick Stadium’s grounds on home football Saturdays.

The head coach of the Hawkeye football team is often joined by the likes of men’s wrestling coach Tom Brands, women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder, and men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery.

As a 2022 Homecoming Grand Marshal, Brands was recognized during the first quarter of Iowa’s 3313 win over Northwestern on Oct. 29. McCaffery and Bluder’s teams have made appearances on Duke Slater Field this season to show off their 2022 Big Ten Tournament championship rings.

Kinnick is, however, useful to the trio of winter sports coaches beyond the 69,250-fan recognition it offers them. Bluder, McCaffery, and Brands have all used Kinnick Stadium as a tool to help recruit top athletes to their respective programs.

“The atmosphere speaks to our fan base,” McCaffery said. “You know, you look at that facility, the facility next door, and our facility, at an athletic program, not just one or the other, that is truly committed to being good. Our fan base

wants us and expects us to be good and supports us in that endeavor. So, it’s a big part of [recruiting], no question.”

Guard Tony Perkins, one of McCaffery’s starters this season, visited Kinnick Stadium on a game day while on a recruiting visit to Iowa. Though he didn’t recall which game he watched as a recruit, he said Kinnick’s atmosphere stuck with him.

“Yeah, we actually went to a football game,” Perkins said of his recruiting visit. “The atmosphere was crazy. It was, like, sold out. Mostly every game has been sold out that I’ve been to since I was here when I was on my visit.”

Perkins, a junior, was a three-star recruit out of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis.

Patrick Kennedy, the Iowa men’s wrestling team’s starting 165-pounder, also went to Kinnick while on a visit. But his experience wasn’t quite the same as the one Perkins had.

“Yeah, I went to Kinnick,” Kennedy said of his visit. “I think we played Northwestern. I think we were smacking them pretty good, so I left at halftime. But yeah, it was cool.”

For Kennedy, opting to leave Kinnick early on game day isn’t uncommon. He still leaves most Iowa

football games well in advance of the final whistle.

“You know, now going to football games not as a recruit, I just like to go to the walkouts part and see the hawk fly [pregame] quick,” Kennedy said. “That’s really all I need.”

Kennedy was heralded as one of the best poundfor-pound wrestlers in the country during his

high school career. He finished the 2017 season ranked No. 1 at 170 pounds. After his 2018 campaign at Kasson-Mantorville Senior High School in Minnesota, Kennedy was No. 5 in the country at 182 pounds.

“We do use Kinnick Stadium,” Brands said. “Football is king. There is no doubt. The fanfare, the energy, we use it. I can tell you right now that the football program knows our gratitude. We give credit where credit is due because of the atmosphere they bring for us.”

When he’s not hosting recruits or standing on the field waving at fans with his team, Brands has been known to grow the brand of Iowa men’s and women’s wrestling in a different way.

Brands has become a fan favorite at Kinnick in recent years because of some mid-game speeches — the most notable of which came during last year’s Iowa-Penn State football game.

As Hawkeye football ingame host Laura VandeBerg started to interview Brands

during a third-quarter media timeout, he quickly snatched the microphone out of her hands. Then, Brands started his 35 second soliloquy with, “Laura, you are awesome, but I’ve got this interview from here.”

“Look at these guys,” Brands said. “They’re hungry, and lean, and mean like the hawk that was on the field. I love that hawk that was on this field. Anybody, anytime, anywhere — State College, Detroit, Lincoln, Nebraska, we don’t care. We love

these guys. We love you guys. And Iowa Hawkeye football, we need a third quarter, and we need a fourth quarter.”

The No. 3 Hawkeyes trailed the No. 4 Nittany Lions, 17-10, when Brands took the mic. After Brands’ address, Iowa rallied in the game’s final 25 minutes to pull out a 23-20 win. The fans that watched Brands’ impassioned speech just 1 1/2 quarters earlier stormed the field.

At a Presidential Committee on Athletics meeting two days earlier,

Brands revealed that he was hosting 18 recruits in Iowa City that weekend.

“Yeah, I think what you do is, you either go in there and you stumble or you go in there and try to create or add to the atmosphere,” Brands said on Oct. 27. “That’s all you try to do.”

Brands told The Daily Iowan he might be permanently retired from speaking at football games. During his Oct. 29 appearance at Kinnick, Brands did not get the microphone.

Brands said he doesn’t

know if he’ll be given the microphone at a game again. He added he felt fans responded well to his speech at the Penn State game.

Bluder and McCaffery both suggested games at Kinnick can help men’s and women’s basketball recruits see the passion and energy of Iowa’s fan base, giving them an idea of what to expect from the Hawkeye faithful at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“It’s amazing,” Bluder

RECRUITING

Continued from 5 said. “I mean, it helps so much because everybody who’s an athlete, and you work so hard at your trade, you want to play in front of a great crowd. That’s like an artist painting a picture and never showing it to anybody — it doesn’t make any sense.

“We want to be in Carver. We want to show our recruits. You know, when we’re on television, we think we can give it

a good environment to show on television. Even if they can’t get here, they can still see that amazing environment. Then, of course, statistics don’t lie, we were the thirdbest attended [women’s basketball] team in the country last year.”

Sports teams aren’t the only entities on campus that use Kinnick and the Hawkeye football program as a recruiting tool, either. The university hosts each of its incoming freshmen classes at Kinnick before

fall semesters begin. With a few exceptions, every freshmen class participates in Kickoff at Kinnick, which is part of the UI’s ‘On Iowa!’ orientation program.

Students are invited to Kinnick to make new friends, listen to live music, learn the Iowa fight song, and form a block I on the turf.

“I think, instead of helping people make a decision, it can almost reaffirm a decision,” said Allie Conklin, Iowa Admissions associate

director of national recruitment. “They might be like, ‘OK, I love campus, I love my tour, I love the academics, and now this is another really cool tradition that I get to do.’ It’s kind of like a rite of passage.”

Conklin added the UI does not see sharp increases or decreases in enrollment when Iowa football is or isn’t playing well.

Conklin said the most critical thing Hawkeye football does for the UI in terms of the recruitment of regular students is push the

Iowa brand to other markets. When the Big Ten adds USC and UCLA in 2024, Iowa football and UI’s brand will find its way onto televisions from coast to coast in the U.S.

“The draw of Kinnick, from our recruitment standpoint, is just the visibility we get from it,” Conklin said. “The football team being on [FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff] increases the visibility for the University of Iowa. So, students from New York, from California are all able to see our brand,

whether they’re a football fan or not.

“We have so many students coming strictly for academics, and they might never step foot in Kinnick Stadium. But they’ve seen it, and those traditions are great. They want to be a part of that, or at least go to a place that has that sense of community, that has all those wonderful traditions like ‘The Wave’ and everything that comes with football Saturdays.”

B1G News at Wisconsin, MSU

While Wisconsin sopho more running back Braelon Allen sustained a shoul der injury in the Badgers’ 35-24 victory over Purdue on Oct. 22, it isn’t severe enough to keep him off the field this season.

“When I hurt it against Purdue, I had to get X-rays and stuff and see what was going on,” Allen told 24/7 Sports. “It was just a sprain. They told me it couldn’t really get worse and that I could play on it. That’s all I needed to hear. I just have to treat it up and do what ever I need to do to feel the best I can.”

Allen has been taking the brunt of Wisconsin’s carries after secon-string running back Chez Mellu si injured his wrist against Northwestern on Oct. 8. The sophomore from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 989 yards and fifth with 10 touchdowns.

Allen doesn’t expect the injury to go away, and he’s still planning to keep up his normal production against Iowa this week. The Hawkeyes and the Badgers have identical 5-4 records heading into the contest, and the game will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Wisconsin has won eight of the last 10 Heartland Trophy games.

“I would assume so,” Al len told 24/7 Sports when asked if his injury is ex

pected to linger. “Obvious ly, the games aren’t going to get any easier. I am not going to touch the ball any less. We probably have our most physical game of the year coming up this week [against Iowa]. I am doing whatever I can to feel as good as possible.”

Two Big Ten teams in top four of CFP rankings

Following Tennessee’s 27-13 loss to Georgia on Saturday, Michigan has taken a top-four spot in the College Football Play

off rankings released on Tuesday night.

Michigan debuted at No. 5 in the first edition of the rankings on Nov. 1 — one spot out of a playoff berth. Now, Michigan is third in the rankings.

Tennessee dropped from first to fifth following its loss, and Georgia leap frogged No. 2 Ohio State for the top spot in the rankings. TCU rounded out the four-team playoff field in the Nov. 8 rankings.

Two other Big Ten teams appeared in the CFP top 25: No. 14 Penn State and

No. 21 Illinois.

Both Michigan and Ohio State have 9-0 records this season. The Buckeyes and Wolverines will likley play for a Big Ten East title in their head-to-head match up at Ohio Stadium in Co lumbus on Nov. 26.

Iowa has yet appear in the AP Poll and CFP Rank ings this season.

Lawyer alleges Michigan player started tunnel fight

A lawyer for a suspend ed Michigan State football

player alleged on Tuesday a Michigan player started the tunnel fight that led to at least eight suspensions within the Spartan pro gram.

Following the Wolver ines’ 29-7 victory over the Spartans at Michigan Stadium on Oct. 29, both teams exited the field in the same tunnel. Videos of multiple fights in the tun nel, which were allegedly started by Michigan State players, emerged on social media soon after. One vid eo shows multiple Spartans hitting Wolverine corner

back Gemon Green with a helmet.

Green was hit in the back, face, and shoulder, according to ESPN, and was placed in concussion protocol. He missed Mich igan’s Nov. 5 game against Rutgers and has hired an attorney to press criminal charges against MSU play ers.

The Michigan State foot ball program is comply ing with the investigation and has suspended Tank Brown, Khary Chump, An gelo Grose, Zion Young, Malcolm Jones, Justin White, Jacoby Windmon, and Brandon Wright as it continues.

But Dave Diamond, the lawyer representing the unnamed suspended Mich igan State player, alleges a Michigan player “engaged with Spartan athletes with a helmet and swinging a punch.”

“While we acknowledge wrongdoing by all parties, this is not an incident that warrants criminal charges being filed,” Diamond said in a statement. “We have seen similar behavior and even worse on the grid iron and suddenly because it happens in a tunnel, known for incompetent se curity and poor postgame management, there are calls for criminal charges. My client is a young man who responded to the situ ation before him.”

‘A classic Big Ten game’

Spencer Petras has famil iarized himself with Wiscon sin football during his fiveyear career at Iowa. Petras is 1-1 in two starts against the Badgers.

Petras has thrown for 304 yards and two touchdowns against the Badgers. He re corded 211 of those yards when Iowa beat Wisconsin, 28-7, at Kinnick Stadium in 2020. In the Hawkeyes’ 27-7 loss to the Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium in 2021, Pe tras went 9-of-19 for 93 yards and was benched in favor of junior Alex Padilla in the sec ond half.

Heading into his third bat tle for the Heartland Trophy, Petras knows what to expect from the Badgers.

“Schematically, it’s Wis consin’s defense,” Petras said. “Same as it has been for a while. Some new faces, but like always, they’re pretty

solid up front. The front sev en, they’re physical. They’re very well-coached, especially in the back end.

“They do a really nice job of making some things con fusing for a quarterback … For the most part, I know what they’re gonna play. Just have to be super disciplined with my eyes and not let their attempt to disguise fool me. Just taking what’s there.”

Petras added that safety John Torchio seems to make calls and audible for the Bad ger defense. Torchio, who has appeared in 35 career games for the Badgers, has a Big Ten-leading five intercep tions this season, including two pick sixes. He’s also re corded 45 tackles in 2022.

Defensively, Iowa can ex pect to see a lot of Wiscon sin’s running back Braelon Allen.

Allen’s 172 carries and 989 yards rushing lead the Bad gers. He’s also gained over 100 yards in six of Wiscon

sin’s nine games this season. The sophomore from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, has scored 10 rushing touchdowns this year.

“They’re very talented, big, physical backs,” Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell said. “[They’re] not going to go down on first contact, so we’re going to have to swarm to the football. They’re going to run through arm tackles. This is going to be a chal lenge, but we’re excited for it.”

For Campbell, the 30-de

gree temperatures forecasted for Saturday aren’t cause for concern. Instead, the weather is a reason for excitement.

“That’s what Big Ten foot ball is about,” Campbell said of the wintry conditions pre dicted. “When you sign up to come to a Big Ten university, I feel like you’ve got to be thinking about a cold, physi cal game. We’re just all excit ed to have an opportunity to be a part of this one.”

Iowa and Wisconsin have identical 5-4 overall and 3-3 conference records. Both are

still alive in the Big Ten West race and on two-game win streaks.

Iowa and Wisconsin could each reach the Big Ten title game if they win out and Illinois loses two of its last three contests. Whichever team loses on Saturday will face a significantly tougher climb to a West title. Illinois would have to go 0-3 in the last three weeks of the sea son for the loser of Satur day’s Iowa-Wisconsin game to advance to the Big Ten Championship.

Should Illinois go 1-2 in its last three matchups, the winner of Saturday’s game would hold the tiebreaker over the other in the divi sion race. Iowa has lost eight of its last 10 games against Wisconsin. Five of the last 10 matchups between the Hawkeyes and Badgers have been decided by one score.

“It’s just going to be a clas sic Big Ten game,”

said.

Iowa and Wisconsin are both still alive in the Big Ten West title race. They’ll square off at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Jerod Ringwald/The Daily Iowan Wisconsin players hoist the Heartland Trophy during a football game between No. 9 Iowa and Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium on Oct. 30, 2021. All Iowa fans should root for Charlie Jones and the Boilermakers this week. If Iowa wins out and Illinois loses two of its final three games, the Hawkeyes will be headed back to Indy.

Purdue Charlie Jones was the only player that had a good game for the Boilermakers last week.

Neither of these teams are playing for a conference ti tle berth, but both are bowl eligible. These squads are playing for a chance to go somewhere warm for the holidays.

IOWA

This one is going to be good. Two West teams on two-game winning streaks playing for a Heartland trophy. Get your popcorn ready.

NORTHWESTERN

Saturday | 2:30 p.m. |

Northwestern (1-8, 1-5) Minnesota (6-3, 3-3)

Michigan will hammer the Huskers in this one. Just three more games until the Mickey Joseph era can offi cially begin.

It’s hard to think of any thing to say to make a Northwestern game inter esting this season. Maybe Pat Fitzgerald will suit up this week to try and stop the ‘Cats eight-game skid.

The Daily Iowan: You’re from Green Bay. What does it mean for you, just coming from that area?

Jack Plumb: It’s really cool. Iowa’s a lot like Wis consin — farm fields and everything. So, it felt home when I came here too, which is really nice.

DI: Everyone knows Green Bay for the Packers. You’re definitely a Packers fan, right?

Plumb: Oh yeah.

DI: What was it like to ex perience having an NFL team in your backyard?

Plumb: It was really cool. So, my grandpa used to coach for the Packers. We have sea son tickets, so I grew up go ing to every Packer game. I love the Packers. It’s really cool having them right in my backyard.

DI: What’s your grandpa’s name?

Plumb: Fritz Shurmur. He was the defensive coordina tor.

DI: What head coach was he under when he was there?

Plumb: Mike Holmgren. So, he coached Reggie

White, LeRoy Butler back when they went to the Super Bowl.

DI: What else do you like to do in Wisconsin?

Plumb: I love fishing. So, my grandma lives on a lake. So, every time I’m back home, I’ll go over to her house and fish.

DI: What lake?

Plumb: It’s a small lake

called Lake Leone in Sua mico.

DI: What do you do here, academically?

Plumb: I’m an enterprise leadership major, and in a perfect world, I’d want to open up my own brewery.

DI: Are you a big beer guy?

Plumb: I am, yep. So, I home brew, and I fell in love

with that. Then, I’m like, ‘Man, if I could make this my career, I’d love to do that.’”

DI: What’s your favorite beer you’ve brewed?

Plumb: It was called a Bruxelles Blonde. It was re ally good.

DI: What ingredients made that special?

Plumb: It was just a kit my sister got me for my

birthday. It’s from Brooklyn Brew Shop, so I just made that, and it was really good. It was the first beer that I made. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out.

DI: Do you have any fa vorite breweries around here?

Plumb: I love Big Grove. That’s probably my favorite one.

DI: What’s your favorite

drink there?

Plumb: The Easy Eddy.

DI: For your enterprise leadership major, what’s been your favorite class so far in that major?

Plumb: I’m in the man aging and growth business class right now. That one’s pretty cool. We’re running a simulated business.

DI: What are your favorite spots around Iowa City?

Plumb: Like I said, I like Big Grove a lot. Then, we made our garage at our house a little man cave. So, I love hanging out in there. It’s probably one of my fa vorite spots.

DI: Who do you live with?

Plumb: Logan Klemp, Seth Benson, and Monte Pottebaum.

DI: What’s it like living with those three?

Plumb: I love it. It’s a great time. We have a lot of fun together. We all get along really well.

Manahl back to full strength

After an accident with a lawn mower five years ago, Tate Manahl has returned to running and playing sports.

Week 11 Kid Captain Tate Manahl is an avid baseball and flag football player. The 8-year-old enjoys running around and playing with his friends, and his parents are grateful that he still has an opportunity to play sports after he was injured in an ac cident at 3 years old.

Ryan Manahl, Tate’s fa ther, was using a riding lawn mower to cut grass at their family home in Cedar Falls, Iowa, when Tate returned from running errands with his mother, Fonda. After get ting out of the car, Tate ran up behind the lawn mower to see his father. Without seeing Tate, Ryan put the mower in reverse.

“He came up behind me without my knowledge, and I didn’t see him, and he un fortunately ended up un der the lawn mower,” Ryan said. “Half of his body was under it, and he suffered life-threatening injuries from that accident.”

After the accident, Tate was airlifted to the Universi ty of Iowa Stead Family Chil dren’s Hospital. Fonda said the helicopter touched down in the backyard their family shares with neighbors.

Fonda and Ryan couldn’t be with Tate during the 30-minute helicopter trip to

Iowa City. Rather, they had to drive an hour and 20 min utes to UIHC.

“We didn’t know, going to Iowa City, if he was going to make it or not,” Fonda said. “It was just that bad, inju ry-wise. We had to kind of, like, prepare ourselves. Ob viously, a lot of prayers were being said, and we had to hope that everything would be OK.”

Even after the Manahls arrived at UIHC, however, they didn’t find relief. Tate had a seven-hour emergen cy surgery after he arrived at the hospital. Then, he had to have a couple more surgeries to fully repair his intestines.

It took about a week for Tate to have functioning in testines again, Ryan said.

“It was a relief to get down there, but we weren’t really relieved until they repaired his intestines, and then we found out they were actual ly working,” Ryan said. “To know that they were work ing, he had to have a bow el movement, so we were cheering for your kid to go No. 2.”

But Tate wasn’t out of the woods yet. He stayed in the hospital for 43 days as doc tors performed multiple sur geries to save his legs.

It took Tate two years to recover from his injuries. After he was released from

the hospital, he wore an ex ternal fixator — rods that are screwed into his bone and attached outside his body to a stabilizer — to help grow three inches of bone marrow.

The Manahls did at-home therapy and physical thera py at Mercy One Hospital in Waterloo, along with trips to UIHC for additional surger ies on his legs.

“We were amazed that they were able to save both of his legs,” Fonda said. “There was a lot of time

spent at home with his ex ternal fixator trying to fix his bone, and many surgeries with that, but it’s amazing what the doctors can do.”

Now, Tate is nearly back to full strength with almost zero limitations participat ing in sports. Ryan said Tate did develop a drop foot — a condition that makes it dif ficult to lift the front part of the foot — in his right foot.

“Someone who didn’t know who Tate was and the backstory, they’d never know

he went through 30-plus surgeries and everything he has done,” Ryan said. “So, it’s pretty amazing just what the doctors and staff can do to reassemble his little body.”

Ryan and Fonda nominat ed Tate to be a Kid Captain for the 2022 season. Tate’s orthopedic surgeon, Mi chael Willey, also wrote a letter of recommendation, Ryan said. The Manahl fam ily asked Willey to join them on the field on Saturday to

represent how grateful they are for all of Tate’s doctors.

“We asked him to come out on the field with Tate, just because of how much he and all of the other doc tors mean to us to give us the opportunity to contin ue [Tate’s] life,” Ryan said.

“Every day, it just means so much to us. I know it’s for the kids, but we just want him on the field to enjoy that experience with us.”
