The No. 2 Iowa football team will face Purdue on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, almost a year after the Boilermakers handed the Hawkeyes their 2020 season-opening loss. Purdue wide receiver David Bell had a career game against the Hawkeyes last year, recording multiple season-highs in the first contest of the Boilermakers’ six-game slate. Bell registered 121 receiving yards on 13 receptions and three touchdowns on Oct. 24, 2020, en route to Purdue’s 24-20 victory over Iowa at Ross-Ade Stadium. Now, the Hawkeyes are riding a 12-game win streak. Iowa’s main task will be shutting down Bell and the Boilermakers’ pass game — even without senior starting cornerback Riley Moss, who went down with an injury last week in Iowa’s 23-20 victory over Penn State. Moss, the national leader in interceptions, is out this week but avoided

surgery, and the Hawkeyes hope to have him back after the bye week. So, junior cornerback Terry Roberts will plug into Moss’s role, and join Matt Hankins in the starting defensive backfield and help to cover Purdue’s top receiving target. Bell leads Purdue with 439 receiving yards (200 yards clear of Purdue’s second-leading receiver) despite playing in only four of the Boilermakers’ five games so far in 2021. The wide receiver entered concussion protocol after Purdue’s loss to Notre Dame on Sept. 18, and missed the Boilermakers’ next contest against Illinois on Sept. 25. But Bell returned for Purdue’s Oct. 2 matchup against Minnesota, racking up 120 yards on six receptions. A Hawkeye victory this Saturday could come down to how well Iowa’s secondary can contain Purdue’s explosive passing game. - Chloe Peterson, Assistant Sports Editor.

Secondary a catalyst for Iowa’s win streak

Iowa’s defensive backfield has improved since being burned by Purdue in 2020 and leads the nation in interceptions so far this season.

Austin Hanson Sports Editor The Iowa football team hasn’t lost a game in a long time. The Hawkeyes have won 12 consecutive games over the last 349 days.

But the Hawkeyes still remember what defeat feels like.

Iowa suffered its two

most recent losses backto-back at about this time last season. The Hawkeyes fell to Purdue, 24-20, blowing a six-point lead on Oct. 24, 2020. Northwestern erased a 17-point Iowa lead the following week to claim a 21-20 win at Kinnick Stadium.

Twelve wins and nearly a year later, those two

defeats still bother the Hawkeyes.

“I guess, just looking back, those first few losses were kind of gut-wrenching,” senior defensive end Zach VanValkenburg said Tuesday. “We really had to evaluate what our practice habits were and things like that. After that Purdue loss last year, we were

practicing really hard, and you know, we didn’t pull that next one out against Northwestern. But we just kept practicing, harder and harder, and I think that’s been the difference.”

Since that loss to Northwestern, the Hawkeyes have outscored their last 12 opponents, 438-162.

Iowa hasn’t used any

groundbreaking strategies or embraced any superstitions since its winning streak started. Rather, the Hawkeyes have just tried to stick to their not-sounique brand of football to win games.

“I think it’s just complementary football,” senior safety Jack Koerner said.

“It really is. [Our] offense,

defense, and special teams all work in unison. If the defense is not holding up their end, then we trust the offense [to get] in the end zone. We can always rely on special teams to do their job as well. I think that’s really kind of the hallmark of what’s going on. It’s just all three phases really working to-

gether and doing their jobs.”

While Koerner might not admit it, the secret ingredient to Iowa’s recent success might be the very unit he’s a part of.

Iowa has intercepted 16 passes this season — the most in the nation. Iowa’s defense has intercepted 7.1 percent of the passes thrown against it this season. The national average is 2.7 percent.

“Yeah, I joke about it,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said last week. “It’s not like we have a drill for this stuff.

If we did, we should do it more. I think that’s experience. But it’s also a team effort. All the guys will tell you that. The guys on the

back end would tell you that.”

The secondary has also helped the Hawkeyes score three defensive touchdowns this season — two of which were interception returns for touchdowns by senior Riley Moss in Iowa’s season-opening 34-6 win over then-No. 17 Indiana at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes’ three touchdowns are the second-most recorded by any defense in all of college football.

Iowa has forced an NCAAbest 20 total turnovers this season. The Hawkeyes’ turnover margin currently sits at plus-15 — also the best in the nation.

fense efficiency, ninth in total defense, and fourth in scoring defense.

Before this season started — and the 12-game win streak in particular — Iowa’s secondary didn’t always look impressive.

Last year against Purdue, Iowa surrendered 282 passing yards and three touchdowns. That is the most passing yards the Hawkeyes have allowed in a game over the past two seasons.

Purdue quarterback Aiden O’Connell completed 62 percent of his passes.

“If you follow [Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm’s] career, [the Boilermakers] have always been really good offensively, so it starts there,” Ferentz said Tues-

day. “They challenge you in a lot of different ways. They make you defend a lot of different things. They have gadgets and trick plays on special teams and offense.

So, they make it a tough preparation. And they have good players. They have hurt us with deep balls.

“You really have to defend everything, and that keeps pressure on you, defensively. So, we got a lot of respect for them and for obvious reasons. I’m well-

aware of that, believe me.”

The piece of Purdue’s offense that Iowa’s secondary had the hardest time defending in 2020 was junior wide receiver David Bell. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound vertical passing threat caught 13 passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

“It’s hard [to defend Bell],” Ferentz said. “We haven’t done a good job in two years. I don’t know. I haven’t gone back. I don’t

want to depress myself and look at how many catches he’s had in two years, but it’s significant.”

“Bell is one of the best players that I’ve seen in quite some time,” Ferentz added. “We certainly haven’t had much luck defending him. He’s playing at a real high level, once again, predictably there.”

The personnel that populated Iowa’s defensive backfield the last time the Hawkeyes played the Boilermakers still remains.

While the names on the jerseys in Iowa’s secondary haven’t changed, the Hawkeyes still believe they’ve come a long way since they last faced Bell, pre-12-game win streak.

“I think we’ve come a really long ways,” Koerner told The Daily Iowan Sept.

28. “We’ve gotten a lot tighter and close-knit as a group. That level of trust is really, really kind of something that maybe people outside [the team] don’t really understand, necessarily. [People don’t understand] how much that level of trust is important on the field. So, that’s grown, obviously. All of us have gotten a little bit more experienced too, and that’s really helped us out a lot.”

Now closer than ever, Iowa’s secondary believes it can slow Bell and help the Hawkeyes pick up a full-circle victory against Purdue.

“Obviously they’ve had our number in the past,” Koerner said. “Last year was just a heartbreaking loss that we feel like we shouldn’t have lost. Going into the bye week [this season] 7-0, that’s what we’re SECONDARY | Page 7

focused on this week. It would be a great win, but not necessarily any more important than any one we’ve had in the past or will have in the future.”

Iowa will be without starting cornerback Riley Moss for Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. Homecoming matchup with Purdue at Kinnick Stadium. Junior Terry Roberts is slated to start in Moss’ place.

“What people don’t see is, in practice, how much [Roberts] dedicates himself to the [cornerback] position and how well he’s been doing,” Koerner said. “Obviously, he’s behind Matt [Hankins] and Riley, two of the best corners in the country. So, obviously that’s why he’s

not playing. But he can step in there and do the job, as he proved [against Penn State Oct. 9]. He’ll do his job on Saturday.”

The Hawkeyes aren’t putting more stock in Saturday’s matchup than they have any other game they’ve played during the past two seasons.

“Obviously, it’ll be nice to get a second crack at them after last year,” VanValkenburg said.

“Obviously, that’s been on our minds. But we’ve been trying to prepare for every team individually.

You know, take it a week at a time. Obviously, we have the bye week next week. So, right now, we have a one-week season.

WITH IOWA WIDE RECEIVER NICO RAGAINI Daily Iowan Sports Reporter Chris Werner caught up with Ragaini at an Iowa football media availability session two weeks ago.

DI: Who is your biggest role model?

The Daily Iowan: What is the best feeling in football?

Ragaini: My biggest role model? Definitely my dad.

My dad played college baseball and he always told me he wasn’t the most talented but he worked the hardest and that definitely instilled something in me. I mean, coming out of high school I had like no offers and I wasn’t a big recruit, so just working for everything that I have.

Nico Ragini: There’s a couple of great feelings. Pulling up in front of Kinnick when you get off the bus, like all the fans being there and your family being there screaming you on is a great feeling. The swarm is definitely an absurd feeling, after the game when the whole team is in the locker room singing the fight song together, that’s an awesome feeling after we won a big game.

DI: Do you have a go-to joke if someone’s like, ‘Anyone got jokes?’ Do you have one you go to, that you can say on the record?

DI: You were talking about your prep school and all those guys going Division I, who is the best player you’ve played against?

Ragaini: Who’s the best player I’ve played against?

The best player I ever played against, when I was like a freshman in high school, there was this kid named Erv Philips who played in our rival high school. He played for the Buccaneers for a little bit and went to Syracuse. He was like the best player that I’ve ever seen with my eyes face-to-face, like I’ve never seen someone play that good before in my whole entire life.

He was a running back and wide receiver, I think played wide receiver for the Buccaneers.

Ragaini: Definitely not.

Our receiver room has some funny jokes, but they’re all inappropriate so I don’t think that I should share them.

DI: Who is the most famous person in your phone contacts?

Ragaini: The most famous person my phone contacts?

DI: That’s a great answer, fantastic answer. You talked about your journey to Iowa with the prep school and everything. Did you have a welcome to Iowa moment when you got here or later down

the road when you were like, ‘Wow, this is Big Ten football?’

and worst football play of your career?

Ragaini: I mean, just seeing the whole football facility and everything like that was just like, extremely crazy and my parents dropped me off and I was really out here living alone, like in the middle of the country by myself, which was definitely a welcome to Iowa moment.

DI: And what is your best

Ragaini: My best one was probably the catch [against Colorado State]. And my worst one, one that I wish I could switch is the Nebraska catch. Even though some people think it was a catch,

I wish I held on to it for longer and handed it to the ref so there was no possible way they could really change the call. That one still bothers me.

DI: What’s the difference between Iowa corn and Nebraska corn?

Ragaini: I don’t think I’ve ever had Nebraska corn. Iowa corn is better than Nebraska corn.

DI: What’s one musician that gets too much hype, and one that doesn’t get enough?

Ragaini: I don’t know, I pretty much like all the basic guys. I’m a big Drake fan.

I like Travis Scott. I mean, all the new music that comes out, I pretty much listen to.

Debating Iowa’s midseason Most Valuable Player The DI football staff determines which Hawkeye has been the most important to Iowa’s 6-0 start to the season.

Jack Campbell, middle linebacker Robert Read Pregame Editor Iowa players have been vocal in sharing that middle linebacker Jack Campbell is the leader of the defense.

C o n s i d e ring how the Hawkeyes have one of the best defenses in the nation, Read and how much Iowa as a team relies on elite defensive play, I think it makes sense to name the team’s core defensive player as its midseason most valuable player.

Campbell, a junior, is thriving in his first year as a starter for the Hawkeyes. The former Cedar Falls standout has com-

piled a team-leading 55 tackles (1.5 for loss) through six games, along with one sack, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a touchdown. Plus, he shares calls to the rest of Iowa’s defense and makes sure everyone knows where they are supposed to be.

The results are paying off.

Iowa is only allowing 13 points per game this season. The Hawkeyes also lead the nation in forced turnovers with 20.

Campbell missed the first three games of last season with mononucleosis. The Hawkeyes haven’t lost a game since he returned to the lineup. I’m not sure if that’s much of a coincidence. Whether it’s intercepting a pass in the end zone

against Wisconsin last year, returning a fumble for a touchdown against Iowa State in Week 2, or recording 18 tackles against Colorado State in Week 4 — Campbell always seems to be around the ball. And that does wonders for Iowa’s defense, which often comes up with timely turnovers or plays that help out the offense.

Campbell isn’t the type of person who wants attention to come his way. But he is the leader of one of the best defenses in the nation on the No. 2 team in the country. And that’s valuable. Also, I can’t believe nobody here picked standout center Tyler Linderbaum.

Tyler Goodson, running back Chris Werner Football Reporter Running back Tyler Goodson has been the Hawkeyes’ motor on offense for the first six games of the season. The fans and media predicted he would have to produce for the Iowa offense to function and he has done just that.

Goodson has been the steady, reliable back the Hawkeyes needed during Werner the six-game gauntlet that included three ranked opponents.

Over arguably the toughest early-season schedule of any Big Ten team, Goodson’s 518 yards

rank fifth in the conference.

The junior from Suwanee, Georgia, has shown an ability to evade would-be tacklers with smooth jukes. He also a willingness to run through contact that will only make him more difficult to bring down as the Hawkeyes forge further on in their quest for the Big Ten title.

The featured back has also improved in the passing game, reeling in 11 throws for 162 yards, averaging nearly 12 yards a catch. Goodson has become a good check-down option for Hawkeye quaterback Spencer Petras. Goodson has become a dynamic offensive weapon both out of the backfield and catching the ball.

Goodson has five rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown this year. The preseason first-team All-Big Ten honoree had a career outing on Sept. 18 against Kent State, rumbling for three scores and 153 yards on the ground.

Iowa has played sound, complementary football so far this season both as a team and as an offense, blending the run and the pass well enough to have a perfect record through six weeks.

Simply put, if Goodson is not in the Black and Gold, the Hawkeyes are not the second-ranked team in the country. I rest my case. christopher-werner@uiowa.edu

Austin Hanson Sports Editor In the history of college football, I’d wager to say that there aren’t too many punters that have garnered Heisman Trophy buzz.

No, Iowa’s Tory Taylor hasn’t received Heisman Trophy atHanson tention on a national level. Locally, however, Taylor’s play has led to MVP chants during Hawkeye football games. Some Iowa fanatics have even shouted things like, “Get that man a Heisman” or, “He’ll be Iowa’s first Heisman Trophy winner since Nile Kinnick” during games.

Taylor probably isn’t a real Heisman Trophy contender, but it is reasonable to think that he could win the Ray Guy Award, which is given annually to the nation’s best collegiate punter.

Taylor has already punted the ball inside the opponent 20-yard line 20 times this season. Fifty percent of Taylor’s punts have been downed inside the enemy 20-yard line.

The 6-foot-4, 231-pound Australian has even kicked a whopping six punts inside the opponent 12-yard line.

He’s punted the ball inside the opposition’s 3-yard line on three occasions, too.

Taylor can also boot the ball with a great deal of power, when needed. Taylor has punted the ball as far as 69

yards this season. Iowa’s defense has scored three touchdowns this season thanks, in part, to the tough field position Taylor has put opposing offenses in.

Taylor has consistently forced opposing quarterbacks to throw passes against the Hawkeyes’ defense from their own end zone this season. As a result, Iowa’s defense currently leads the nation with 16 interceptions in just six games.

Game in and game out, Iowa wins the field position battle because of Taylor. And it’s no stretch to say that Taylor deserves a lot of credit for Iowa’s success on the defensive side of the ball.

Riley Moss, cornerback Chloe Peterson Assistant Sports Editor Who knows where the Hawkeye secondary would be without Riley Moss?

W e l l , they’re going to have to find out Saturday.

The senior cornerback Peterson has been the Hawkeyes’ most valuable player through six games.

As part of the secondary and its newly coined nickname — “the doughboys” — Moss leads Iowa with four interceptions. Iowa has picked off 16 passes this season — tops in

the nation.

Moss returned two of those picks for touchdowns en route to the Hawkeyes’ 34-6 victory over the thenNo. 17 Hoosiers in Iowa’s season-opener against Indiana Sept. 4.

The cornerback ranks second on the Hawkeyes witb three pass breakups, and has registered 23 total tackles — including 21 solo.

But Moss might not have a chance to pad his stats in the Black and Gold anytime soon.

After grabbing an interception near the end of the second quarter against Penn State Saturday, Moss jumped

up to celebrate with his defense. But he fell back down on the field, and was helped off with assistance from trainers.

Now, Moss is not listed on Iowa’s current depth chart against Purdue. Junior cornerback Terry Roberts will enter Iowa’s starting lineup as Moss recovers from injury.

Moss has been the anchor for Iowa’s secondary so far this season. But the Hawkeyes will need to muster up a way to defend the pass game without Moss for at least this week — maybe longer.

This will be Ayden’s 15th surgery at the UI Stead Family Children’s hospital and he said he’s nervous because this procedure will look a little different than usual.

COVID-19 has impacted the Gendreau family, Patsy said, especially with Ayden’s surgery in two months. Patsy said the biggest difference between this surgery and the other 14 he’s had is that Patsy will be in the hospital alone this year.

“Michaela would usually go with us, but there’s only one person per patient now,” she said. “With this upcoming surgery, I may be the only person who’s there, rather than having the rest of my family there to support me afterwards.

We’ll feel the impact [of COVID-19] more in those instances.”

Ayden’s first trip to the children’s hospital was within 24 hours of his birth when doctors discovered a heart defect. Patsy said he’ll have at least one appointment in Iowa City every year for the next few years.

Now, the 13-year-old likes to watch football when he can catch the games, but he prefers to watch and play baseball — he’s a Chicago Cubs fan.

“I play third [base] and

right field,” he said. “... I want to [play baseball] so I can be active and not lazy, but I don’t feel like doing it as I get older.”

When it comes to sports, Ayden has to be cautious of his syndrome. Patsy said he cannot play football or dodgeball because of heart concerns and he won’t be able to lift weight as he gets older, either.

Ayden said his favorite subject in school is math, and he enjoys playing video games. He wants to pursue a career in that field when he grows up.

As he finishes middle school in the next few years and moves on to high school, Patsy said doctors will continue to monitor Ayden’s heart more than anything.

“He’ll eventually do a stress test in the next couple of years, and the older he gets the more limited he’ll be, just to make sure he’s not pushing himself too hard,” Patsy said.

“When you’re young, you’ll quit when you’re tired, but the older you get the more competitive you are so you tend to push the limits.

We’ll probably start to restrict him more.”

As for his back, permanent rods will be put in soon, Patsy said. Seven years ago, Ayden had

MAGEC rods put in his back to ensure his spine was able to grow with the rest of his body. MAGEC rods are a spinal growing rod that controls the body’s ability to lengthen magnetically.

As the Gendreau’s prepare for the Big Ten match over the weekend, Patsy said her family received a letter from Ayden’s orthopedic surgeon, congratulating him on being selected as a Kid Captain.

She said she’s had a great experience with the doctors at Stead and with her son being a Kid Captain. She said she’s glad the program was delayed through 2020 so this year’s Kid Captains could enjoy the game with fans.

“It’s an amazing experience for the kids,” Patsy said. “It’s nice that the hospital does it because the kids have been through so much.

Even though they might not like all the attention, they’ve been through a lot and they deserve it. I hope they just relax and soak it all in and just enjoy it happening. A game about them, because they deserve it.”
