Friday’s Iowa-Maryland game could very well be a matchup between the Big Ten’s best passing attack against the conference’s best secondary. Terrapin quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa leads the Big Ten with 330 passing yards per game, and Maryland (4-0) as a team ranks first in the conference and eighth nationally in passing offense. Maryland is also the No. 3 scoring offense in the Big Ten. Three Terrapin receivers have already recorded more than 200 yards through the air in the first four games of the season. Tagovailoa threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns, along with his only pick of the season, against Kent State last weekend. The defense the Terrapins will face Friday night ranks fifth in the Big Ten in passing defense and is the No. 1 scoring

defense in the conference. Iowa (4-0) cornerbacks Riley Moss and Matt Hankins have both picked off two passes this season. Along with Moss and Hankins, Iowa has three other experienced starters in the secondary in Jack Koerner, Kaevon Merriwather, and Dane Belton. This group, as well as the rest of the Iowa defense, contributed to Indiana, Iowa State, and Kent State all benching their quarterbacks in games against the Hawkeye defense this season. When Maryland’s offense is on the field going against Iowa’s defense at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium in Week 5, it will be Maryland’s strength vs. Iowa’s strength. Iowa’s ‘Next man in’ mentality The Hawkeye defensive unit has accumulated nine turnovers and three touchdowns through four games.

Chloe Peterson Assistant Sports Editor The Iowa defense has a simple mentality this season: Next man in.

Everybody, no matter if they’re in the first-string lineup or on the scout team, works like a starter in practice. Any defensive player will be ready to take over at any time.

“Our coaches just showed that all the time, ‘Next man in,’” sophomore linebacker Jestin Jacobs said. “And you always have to be ready ... It’s just always about paying attention, and getting the mental reps when you’re on the sideline. So then when you do get in there, you’ll be ready to go.”

Multi-year defensive starters and freshmen Hawkeye players alike take on the ‘next man in’ mentality. And it’s that mentality that’s forced nine turnovers, scored three touchdowns, and held opponents to 11 points per game this season.

It’s what makes Iowa’s defense — at all three levels — one of the best in the nation.

Senior cornerback Riley Moss first turned two interceptions against Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. into touchdowns in Iowa’s season-opener.

One week later, senior cornerback Matt Hankins had two interceptions against Iowa State on Sept. 11, contributing to the defense’s four forced turnovers.

“You can definitely feel

[an energy change],” Hankins said of the turnovers. “Just a momentum shift, the offense comes over and says, ‘We gonna put it in, we’re gonna put it in,’ you can definitely feel the energy change.”

The Hawkeyes’ Week 3 victory against Kent State included a safety when Golden Flash quarterback Dustin Crum was tackled in the end zone for the first score of the game.

While the defense struggled in the first half of Iowa’s victory over Colorado State Sept. 25, the Hawkeyes did enough to extend their 26-game streak of allowing fewer than 25 points — the longest streak in the nation.

Junior linebacker Jack Campbell’s fumble recovery on the Rams’ 6-yard line in the third quarter set up the Iowa offense for a game-tying score, as Iowa amassed 17 uncontested second-half points to move to 4-0.

The defense’s “next man in” mentality has created an impassable unit on and off the field. Every player is always ready to make a play. That embodies the unit’s standard.

But that defensive connection started during the shortened 2020 season.

The COVID-19 season The Hawkeyes spent a lot of time together, on and off the field, last season.

The Big Ten, which originally postponed the fall 2020 season in August, restarted the season

Oct. 23 and the Hawkeyes were subject to strict protocols. Players, coaches, and Tier 1 staff had to be antigen tested daily, and if any Big Ten team’s positivity rate was over 5 percent, it had to stop all football activities for seven days.

If a player tested positive, he had to be out for at least 21 days and go through extensive cardio testing before they could be cleared to play.

That’s not something the Hawkeyes wanted to do.

So, players only hung out with each other throughout

the entire season to avoid the risk of coming in contact with COVID-19.

“Looking back on it, I would definitely say it [helped us],” Jacobs said. “I mean, obviously, we really couldn’t be outside the team a lot because COVID was going on. We had to be strict with what we were doing, and just being around each other, going through all the adversity, going through all the uncertainty, it just helped us grow as a team. And, I mean, obviously we’re just seeing that now, it’s just kept

drawing.”

Moss noted that going through the season of uncertainty as a team helped last season’s Hawkeyes become close — something that’s translated onto this roster.

“This is probably my favorite team that we’ve been on at Iowa,” Moss said. “Just because partially [I’m a] senior but the other, like, we also are just so close with the freshmen, the sophomores, and I think that really has a big turnover for our defense, because we trust each other so much and the

communication is so good.”

‘Next man in’ Iowa’s defense lost six starters from last season: Chauncey Golston, Daviyon Nixon, Jack Heflin, Austin Schulte, Barrington Wade, and Nick Niemann.

But the bond created by the shortened, isolating 2020 season is still at the core of this season’s Hawkeye defense.

“It’s just a blessing to walk into the facility and work with the defensive unit every day,”

Campbell said. “I mean, it’s just like we have a special bond, and seeing each of the guys day in and day out makes it worth it to come in and put in my full effort.”

And for the depth-heavy Hawkeyes, youth isn’t an excuse.

Iowa only has four seniors on its two-deep defensive roster, and multiple freshmen have seen significant playing time.

Iowa’s defensive line utilizes a rotation. Behind the starting defensive line — junior left defensive end John Waggoner, junior left tackle Noah Shannon, sophomore right tackle Logan Lee, and senior right defensive end Zach VanValkenburg — backups rotate in and out.

Assistant defensive coordinator Jay Niemann said the coaches prefer to have their line take breaks — especially

against a waning offense at the end of a game.

“I think we would like to play as many guys as we feel are ready to play,” Niemann said. “And I think what’s happened these first three weeks will be a reflection of what happens the remainder of the schedule as long as the guys who are out there getting their job done. Which they have been up until now, and there’s no reason to believe that they won’t continue to do that.

“It can just help us, particularly late in the game, to have fresh bodies that we can continue to put on the field. Guys who are situationally playing.

Pass rush, downs, whatever, it just helps keep guys fresh, helps give guys a role, and keeps everybody plugged in.”

Van Ness contributed to the Hawkeyes’ safety against Kent State, while also recording two sacks for a loss of 16 yards. Van Ness and junior defensive lineman Joe Evans, who also lines up with the second team, tied for the team lead with two sacks each against Crum.

The Hawkeyes sacked Crum a total of seven times — the highest number of sacks in one game for the Hawkeye football program since 2000.

No matter if a player is a starter or on the scout team, the defensive coaching staff

expects everyone to prepare the same way.

“All of our young guys are hungry to get better,” Jacobs said. “Each and every one of them come in here ready to work, head down, and you’re just seeing that on the field.

The coaches often say to us, ‘Youth is not an excuse.’ And they’re really taking that and working.”

‘The standard’ Iowa’s defense practices with a two-man deficit throughout the week, taking on the Hawkeye offense nineon-seven.

“Our physicality just comes

from the way we practice,” Campbell said. “There’s not a day we’re not going to thud someone up, we’re not going to skip blocks. I mean, I don’t know how many teams in the country do block drills. We’re nine-on-seven competing against the offense.”

Still, the defense tries to force four turnovers per practice.

The Hawkeyes often exceed that number. But for the defense, it’s just “the standard,” set by the coaches: Defensive coordinator Phil Parker, defensive line coach Kelvin Bell, Niemann, and linebackers coach Seth Wallace.

“The standard is the standard,” Hankins said. “Every day, we come in to practice, and set the standard for four turnovers a day. That’s what we strive to do.”

Although Iowa’s defense hasn’t recorded four turn-

overs in a game since the season opener against Indiana, it has accumulated nine in the first four games, leading to 51 points.

The Hawkeyes have also benched three veteran quarterbacks they saw this season: Penix, Iowa State’s Brock Purdy, and Crum.

Of Iowa’s 14 total touchdowns, three have been scored by the defense. But for the Hawkeyes, that’s just standard.

“Hard work is always going to beat talent,” Campbell said.

“So, just having that aspect and going out there and executing. There’s mistakes here and there that will get cleaned up, but I mean, when we were on that field I felt like there were 11 guys flying around that ball and that’s just the standard we’ve set here.” chloe-peterson@uiowa.edu

WITH IOWA DE ZACH VANVALKENBURG Daily Iowan Sports Editor Austin Hanson chatted with VanValkenburg at an Iowa football media availability session.

Iowa wore a couple years ago?

Daily Iowan: First and foremost, I wanted to ask if you have a favorite TV show or guilty pleasure TV show?

VanValkenburg: I liked them. Obviously, I wasn’t pleased with the result of the game. So, I think I’d like them a little bit more had we won. But, you know, I like alternates. Those are fun.

Zach VanValkenburg: Favorite TV show? I always kind of finish them. But right now, I don’t have one.

The last one I watched was called The Americans. You ever heard of that one?

DI: Do you have a favorite memory as a Hawkeye?

VanValkenburg: Obviously, it’s tough to judge.

[This year’s Cy-Hawk game] might end up being one.

Obviously, that was a great game that might end up being one of them. I think the Wisconsin game last year was definitely nice too.

DI: No, I haven’t heard of that one.

VanValkenburg: It was on like FX, I think — maybe a couple years ago. It’s about like two undercover KGB agents that pretend they’re Americans and live in America.

DI: Gotcha. Do you have a favorite movie then?

VanValkenburg: A favorite movie? That’s tough. I could say something cliché like Rocky IV or something.

One movie I’ve always liked since I was a kid, you’ve probably never heard of it, is A Bridge Too Far. It’s like a 1960s war film.

DI: I’ve never heard of that.

VanValkenburg: I used to like it a lot.

DI: Gotcha. So everyone talks about how they have a go-to song that gets them fired up for a game. Do you have a go-to song for when you’re sad?

VanValkenburg: For when I’m sad? Um, yeah, I do have one. “Somewhere Else” by Louis the Child.

DI: What’s the difference between Iowa corn

and Nebraska corn?

VanValkenburg: What’s the difference? Well, the sun shines a little brighter here. I mean, that’s about it. Maybe the mentality of the people helps [Iowa corn] grow taller.

DI: On a more serious note, what brought you to Iowa? How did you go, “You know what, I’d love to go to

a state with three million people in it?”

VanValkenburg: I’m from Michigan. It’s really not that much different. I think Iowa City’s a really nice place. Actually, the weather’s better here, so I like it. You know, when I was making my decision when I transferred, I wanted to be with a good head coach and a good coaching staff and

people that kind of reflected my values. So, this place just stood out right away.

DI: If you had to choose between the two, black or gold?

VanValkenburg: Black or gold? I think I’d go with gold. I like the gold.

DI: What’d you think about the all-gold uniforms

DI: Gotcha. Do you have a favorite restaurant here in Iowa City that you hit all the time?

VanValkenburg: In Iowa City? Man, that’s hard. A lot of times, we have a black [meal plan] card. So, our choices are kinda laid out for us. But out of those, I think I like Estela’s a lot.

Tribute in Coralville, my girlfriend works there, so I’ve eaten there a lot.

Week 5 Kid Captain ready to cheer on Hawkeyes Nine-year old BraeLynn Krisinger developed a bacterial infection at 18 months old that led to multiple surgeries.

Chloe Peterson Assistant Sports Editor BraeLynn Krisinger, the Iowa football team’s Week 5 Kid Captain and a lifelong Hawkeye football fan, is prepared to cheer on her favorite team as it takes the field in Maryland Friday night.

The 9-year-old lives in Des Moines and will be looking for her favorite player — senior defensive back Xavior Williams — from her living room TV. Williams became BraeLynn’s favorite Hawkeye after he walked her out of the tunnel and onto Duke Slater Field as part of the Kid’s Day celebration at Kinnick Stadium in August.

“She follows him and looks for him on the TV when we’re watching,” Christina Little, BraeLynn’s mother, said.

Christina nominated BraeLynn to be a Kid Captain because the family loves the Hawkeyes. The family also spent a significant amount of time at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

BraeLynn was 18 months old when she developed a serious bacterial infection that obstructed her airway. She was on a ventilator for two months at a local Des Moines hospital, but BraeLynn developed more complications from the infection and received an emergency tracheostomy.

We really didn’t know. All we could do is have faith, I guess, and hope she would pull through.”

After the tracheostomy, BraeLynn was airlifted to the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. She went through other surgeries and procedures

over the next seven years, Christina said.

“She’s had a very long and complicated medical course,” said Richard Smith, one of BraeLynn’s doctors specializing in pediatric otolaryngology. “That has been associated with a number of major operations and a number of minor operations, innumerable exams in the operating room to check her airway and

to evaluate her airway, and to add it all she’s done incredibly well. And, obviously, with BraeLynn’s procedures she had to miss school. But she’s kept up with things so she’s a remarkable, remarkable girl.”

The two-hour drive from Des Moines to Iowa City has become routine over the years, Christina said. The family has landmarks along the way to point out.

BraeLynn got her trach removed in 2017.

“After I got my trach removed, I didn’t feel different by how I breathed,” BraeLynn said. “It just felt weird how I had a hole in my throat, and now I have to breathe a different way.”

BraeLynn enjoys swimming, and likes to dance, play outside with her friends, and go camping — something she

couldn’t do while she had her trach.

BraeLynn had a heart and lung bypass surgery in 2019 to further aid her breathing.

Now, Smith said he doesn’t expect to see BraeLynn too often back at the children’s hospital. Smith said he has seen BraeLynn twice since her 2019 surgery.

“Certainly, the frequency in which she has required care has diminished greatly,” Smith said. “On the most recent exam, nothing needed to be done. So, I hope things will be very smooth for her and that she will not require a lot of subsequent medical care.”

Braelynn and her family can’t cheer on the Hawkeyes in Kinnick Stadium this week, as Iowa is playing Maryland on the road in College Park.

But the family got a chance to be on the field at Kids Day in August, and BraeLynn walked down the Back in Black tunnel to cheering Hawkeye fans.

“I got emotional, and started crying,” BraeLynn said. “But it was happy tears.

It was the first time I had ever been on the field before, and it was just fun to be down there and meet players and the coach. And it just felt like I was free and could do something more fun.”
