Hawkeye flock grows through the years The University of Iowa hardly looks the way it did when classes started in 1847. Over nearly two centuries, the campus has evolved to better accomodate a larger student population.

The steps of the Old Capitol used to run into vast greenery. No buildings existed near the site after its construction in 1840.

Nine days after construction started, architect John F. Rague resigned, and Chauncey Swan, a territorial government commissioner, finished overseeing the job.

The building started as only four rooms, housing the Iowa Legislature for a few years and the entire university until 1863.

From there, the UI expanded in physical infrastructure, student population, and educational courses.

While the entire university was housed in the Old Capitol for six years, several buildings were beginning construction to build the campus — blending together Iowa City and the UI. “It’s such a visible place in Iowa City,” Aiden Bettine, UI community and student life archivist, said of the Old Capitol. “You see a lot of the blur between campus and community, and the town and gown relationship, throughout time in that location.”

The heart of campus Since the university’s founding, the Old Capitol, cut from Iowa River limestone, has been the center and heart of campus. The Pentacrest, however, looked very different when the inaugural Hawkeye class stepped onto campus.

Mary Bennett, special collections coordinator at the State Historical Society of Iowa and a former Hawkeye, said the “red brick campus” used to stand where the Pentacrest is now. The era featured tall buildings with chimneys instead of the four buildings that stand there today, which were inspired by the Beaux-

Arts Movement, she said.

“There were all red buildings, kind of like Calvin Hall,” she said. “It wasn’t until 1900 or 1901 that they started with Beaux-Arts, stone buildings that we know now.

So, the look of the campus changed drastically after that.”

The Pentacrest space housed the Old Capitol, the Medical Building, South Hall, the Second Observatory Building, the Dental Building, North Hall, and Science Hall from 1865 until 1894.

The major buildings located on campus were all housed on the east side of the Iowa River in the UI’s early history, with the main campus sitting between Madison and Linn Street.

The final Pentacrest building was built in 1924, when Jessup Hall was completed over a decade

exchange for their education, she said. This took away from the UI’s applicant pool in the 1800s.

Sheridan said because the UI did not have designated lands and funds from the federal government like ISU did, it began focusing its scope and investing more in certain programs.

“The University of Iowa became highly focused,” she said. “It was like a division. If you wanted that practical science education in engineering or agriculture, you would go to Iowa State. If you wanted arts, doctor, philosopher, or English, you’d go to the University of Iowa.”

As higher education expanded in the state, the two campuses continued to differ. From the very start, faculty members and students lived on campus at ISU, Sheridan said.

The UI’s first residence hall didn’t open until Currier Hall was built in 1914, nearly 70 years after the institution’s first classes.

Bennett said the two schools had “different characters.” The UI often took on a more cosmopolitan and political role, especially after World War I. “There was more student radicalism going on here [the UI],” she said. “... Iowa State was originally more vocational, and more geared towards engineering and home economics. The UI was more of a traditional liberal-arts college with a focus on the humanities.

They were, and are, two distinctive campuses.”

A primary motivator behind Bennet’s decision to attend the UI instead of ISU in the 1970s was that the former was more political and progressive at the time, she said.

Regardless of the differences, Sheridan said the two universities found ways to succeed and grow together.

“There were overlaps — still are overlaps,” she said. “But we’ve got our lanes. And I think that was the perfect set up for success for all three universities we have now.

Not many states can boast two big universities that are this successful, but no matter what you want to do, you can continue to find success within our state because of the focuses of the two.”

The growth of the physical university As the UI expanded in the 1800s and early 1900s, the campus underwent many changes and huge renovations.

after MacLean Hall. The heart of the UI, however, was not done growing as higher education busied in Iowa with the creation of a competing public institution.

The establishment of another public Iowa institution Iowa State University was founded 11 years after the UI. As a land grant institution, it provided new opportunities for Iowans who wanted to pursue higher education, said Allison Sheridan, curator for Iowa State University’s University Museums.

“The land grant provided land to the designee, so in our case, the land was in northwest Iowa and the state sold that land to fund a [new] university,” she said. “...

It started as an agricultural college and the land grant pushed to make that a reality.”

Because the land was designated and sold, students could begin at ISU without paying tuition, she said. Students were expected to do chores and work on campus in

The Dey House, which still stands by Currier Hall, was the first building built after the founding of the UI. The building, which now serves as the home of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, was commissioned in 1857.

South Hall was built in 1863, on the present-day grassy area between Schaeffer and MacLean Hall. The building burned down in 1901.

Fifteen university buildings, including the Old Capitol, were built in the late 1800s. In addition to the Old Capitol, only two still stand: Old Brick Church and Calvin Hall — which was originally on the Pentacrest. Seashore Hall is the most recent 1800s building to be demolished. The building was razed in May 2021.

Between 1900 and 1983, 74 buildings were built.

The expansion of the university eventually bled into downtown Iowa City.

“The Old Capitol Mall used to just be buildings and storefronts of local businesses,” Bennett said.

The university didn’t expand into the west side of the Iowa River until the 1920s and 30s. Buildings continue to be built to accommodate growing areas of study and the larger number of university students.

An expansion of Hawkeyes At the university’s founding, student enrollment varied.

By 1856, 124 undergraduate students were enrolled. At that point, there were only three types of degrees the university could give to students. Students could earn degrees from the Preparatory Department, the Normal Department — which would eventually become the College of Education — and the College of Liberal Arts.

Twenty-five years later, the UI welcomed 729 students, including 169 graduate students. At this point, the university added three more degree programs and eradicated two departments for undergraduates from the original three.

While it still offered a language-arts degree, undergraduates could also learn about law, medicine, and homeopathic medicine. Those degrees were also expanded to graduate students.

By the turn of the 20th century, the undergraduate population had multiplied twelve-fold. In September 1900, the UI welcomed 1,542 undergraduates to Iowa City, as well as 352 graduate students.

In 1935, undergraduate student enrollment hit 10,000.

On the university’s 100th birthday, there were nine colleges with 15,634 people enrolled — 59 percent of whom were men.

As the world reached the year 2000, 26,956 students were enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs at the UI. The university celebrates 175 years of education this spring, on Feb. 25, with 20,187 undergraduate students in nine colleges that aren’t the same as those in the 1950s. Currently, 6,141 graduate students are enrolled in 13 programs, and 1,866 professional students are enrolled in four programs.

The university is currently made up of more

than 28,000 students.

That is 227 times the number of people who originally walked into the Old Capitol for the first university classes in the state of Iowa.

Today, just over half of enrolled students are women. Nearly 60 percent of students are from Iowa.

Bennett said increased enrollment has changed how students interact with campus. When she received her bachelor’s degree in the 1970s, there were closer to 21,000 students at the UI.

Coralville also began to blossom as a result of the university’s increasing population.

“You could walk places when the campus was smaller,” she said.

“Coralville was virtually nothing back in those days. There were things out on Highway 6 back then, but it wasn’t anything like the way it is now. I think Iowa City has lost some of its thunder in a way and has been superseded by Coralville and North Liberty.”

Regardless of how it’s changed over the 50 years since Bennett arrived, Iowa City is still one of the most beautiful places she’s been to, she said.

“It’s a beautiful campus — it always has been,” she said. “And I’m proud to be an alum.”

Students demonstrate through history As the University of Iowa prepares to celebrate its 175th birthday, The Daily Iowan examines its history through the lens of student voice, social change, and protest.

Eleanor Hildebrandt News Editor Over the last 175 years, the grassy expanse on either side of the Old Capitol has hosted a wide variety of music concerts, fireworks, and parades.

Hundreds of thousands of students have made the lawn a place to study, sunbathe, eat lunch, and people watch.

The events Iowans typically associate most with the area surrounding the most prominent landmark in Iowa City, however, are protests and debates.

Since its founding in 1847, the University of Iowa has been a center for conversation and protest in the state.

From the American civil rights movement to protests surrounding the Vietnam War and Black Lives Matter, the university has remained a space for students to speak their minds and question authority, said Mary Bennett, special collections coordinator at the State Historical Society of Iowa.

The UI’s Pentacrest in particular remains a central gathering place for protest.

“The Pentacrest has always been the civic center of the campus,” she said.

“That’s where the majority of the protests have happened over time.”

The UI has helped students find their voices for more than 175 years — voices that have defined the university throughout its history.

“As we think of the university’s history, we wonder, ‘What’s a university without students?’” UI Archivist David McCartney said. “That’s why we’re here. Student life has changed over 175 years, but their voices have remained defining.”

World War II During the early to mid-decades of the 20th century, the UI saw students protest both world wars.

The university published news bulletins during World War II that proclaimed Iowa City and the UI as “the hub of Iowa’s wartime information wheel,” which was also a space where students voiced opinions and concerns about the war.

Thirty hours after the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, hundreds of UI students packed into MacBride Hall for a student forum. According to the bulletin, students were concerned for their safety and futures.

“For the first time in this student generation, the solid attention of a packed auditorium was focused on the speakers,” the January 1942 bulletin read.

“What was being said was re-echoed in the hearts of every one of them.”

Speakers expressed the need to “fight AND learn,” and encouraged “universal hope” for peace. Others voiced concern.

“Wishful thinking will not stop aggression,” then-graduate student Roger Hargrave said at the gathering.

1950s and 60s

The University of Iowa has many showings of civil unrest in support with the civil rights movement and anti-Vietnam War protests.

Hargrave had previously served in the Spanish Civil War. Bill Shoentgen, a thenUI senior from Dubuque and editor of The Daily Iowan, spoke to the students’ upbringing.

“We, the post- and prewar students, have been brought up in an era of peace,” he said. “We have been educated against imperialistic war. Now peace has been denied to us…The causes of the war make no difference to us, now that war has come.

Leave those to history.

What does make a difference is that the future is exactly up to us. We must face it.”

Following a declaration of war a few days later, former UI President Virgil Hancher said he believed students should continue their work as normal.

The DI wrote that students “will be ready for the roles — the greatest and the least of them — which we singly and together may be called upon to play,” when it came to the U.S.’s involvement in World War II.

The fight for civil rights Though wars came and went, the fighting spirits of Iowa students remained, Bennett said.

“The university has always been a place where we bring ideas from all directions and all points of view and we debate their merits,” she said. “... The idea of freedom of speech, questioning authority, asking questions instead of accepting things, has been a major part of the university’s history and spirit.”

Following the conclusion of World War II, students began to speak their minds loudly again during the civil-rights movement.

In the late 1950s and early 60s, pages of the DI were filled with news of civil unrest across the country.

Civil rights leaders visited campus, including Martin Luther King Jr., who came in November 1959.

King spoke in the Iowa Memorial Union about the Black experience, and how people had gone from enslavement to desegregation.

King was quoted in the Nov. 12, 1959, edition

of the DI, discussing the forces that stood against integration — including White Citizens Councils, the Ku Klux Klan, and apathetic individuals.

“But in spite of all this, the opponents of desegregation are fighting a losing battle,” he said. “The ‘Old South’ has gone, never to return again.”

King also emphasized the importance of nonviolent protests during his speech. The crowd that day was “overflowing.”

A year after King’s visit, a group of students formed the Student Association for Racial Equality, which was affiliated with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

The civil rights organization advocated for increased voter registration for Black citizens.

In 1963, several UI students, faculty, and community members backed a telegram to the Iowa Legislature urging them to support civil-rights legislation going through the U.S. Congress.

The UI student body president at the time, Mike Carver, said signing the petition was “a significant step toward the establishment of equal rights for all men.”

The Student Association for Racial Equality sent additional messages to the Iowa delegation in Washington, D.C. The university also invited Bayard Rustin, a civil-rights leader, to speak on campus, but he was arrested in New York on April 22, 1964 — days before he was set to speak — for protesting at the World’s Fair.

Bennett said the protests and speakers represented “positive growth” for the UI and its student population.

“The protests evolved in a positive way over time,” she said. “There were civil rights advocates early on in this community and there was a lot of awareness. The Baby Boomer generation was coming to college at this point and ramping everybody up.”

McCartney said student codes of conduct changed drastically in the 60s, as did rules in general.

amination and reevaluation for the university and its students,” he said.

“The civil rights [movement] drove parts of this.

Regardless of it being a predominately white institution, the University of Iowa has a history of students participating in the long civil rights movement.”

In 1968, Black students occupied the UI president’s office. Two students sat in chairs in the office, showing their dissatisfaction with the university’s handlings of racial equity issues.

“It started with two students, and then eight, and pretty soon the room is entirely full — and it’s a standing room,” Bennett said. “They did this as a way to get attention.”

The DI reported on April 10, 1968, that 75 people joined a panel of Black UI community members in the IMU to discuss how white people could aid Black people in the fight for civil rights. The group then drafted specific demands related to the university’s policies on racial equality.

In the wake of King’s April 4 assassination that same year, several students demanded the UI offer Afro-American studies classes, diversify hiring, and aid the underprivileged, Bennett said.

The African American Studies Department was founded two years later.

Vietnam When another war struck, some of the biggest, and angriest, protests seen on campus took place.

Times were so turbulent that author Larry Perl called former UI President Howard Bowen’s tenure from 1964-69 “years of protest” in his book, Calm and Secure On thy Hill: A Retrospective of the University of Iowa.

The first person to burn a draft card on a college campus, and the second person to do so ever, was student Steven Smith, who burned his card on Oct. 20, 1965, at the Iowa Memorial Union in protest of the Vietnam War. Smith was participating in a “Soapbox Stand Off.” In 1966, roughly 500 UI students pricked their fingers and signed petitions in their own blood regarding the war. A dozen protesters brought the petition into Bowen’s office in the Old Capitol, publicly denouncing the administration’s “complicity” in the war effort. The presence of Marine recruiters on Iowa’s campus also angered the protesters.

However, counter protesters were also present, chanting their support for Bowen and the war, according to Perl’s book.

The Iowa Student Senate found the administration to be “lacking in responsibility” when it arrested some protesters at the demonstrations. The senators asked the university to not take any action against those arrested.

The students were questioned, but no charges were officially filed.

Several UI students, faculty, and community members backed a telegram to the Iowa Legislature urging them to support civil rights legislation going through the U.S. Congress.

Summer 2020 The Pentacrest was used more than any other spot in Iowa City for protesters to gather. There were dozens of protests following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Protestors again took over the highway.

October 2021

The Sudanese community in Johnson County also occupied in front of Schaffer and MacBride hall to protest the coup that occurred in Sudan.

Bowen was known during his tenure for being neutral toward the war.

When Willard “Sandy” Boyd took the helm at the UI in 1969, he was met with similar protests.

One of the most eventful protests to ever occur on campus followed the 1970 shooting at Kent State University, in which national guard officers shot and killed four students during a protest.

After the killings, Iowa students, like thousands of students across the country, were enraged.

In an interview with the DI in 2020, Boyd — who is now 94 years old — described the harrowing scene on campus following the shooting.

“It was horrifying,” Boyd said. “… [I] lived at home, not in the president’s house, and the day after Kent State, we came out to four [pretend dead] bodies lying in our front yard.”

Demonstrations swelled as students boycotted classes two days after the shooting. That night, 400 people held a sleep-in on the lawn of the Old Capitol, and 50 people broke into the Old Capitol and set off a smoke bomb.

A demonstration May 7-8, 1970, resulted in mass arrests of protesters at Boyd’s request. Days later, he said he regretted the arrests of peaceful pro-

A student regent position begins on the Iowa state Board of Regents following requests for more student voices in higher education. The position continues in 2022.

2009 Iowa City is designated a UNESCO City of Literature. It is the third city to receive such designation and the first in North America.

Fall 2021 Hundreds of UI students visited the Pentacrest several times to protest against the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity on campus and two of its members who were accused of sexual assault in 2020.

December 2021 Iowa City high school students used the Pentacrest as the final point of their march out of class for reproductive rights.

Protests continued intermittently for years to come, and classes were canceled in 1972 following several protests, including a few where students ended up on Interstate 80.

Bennett said taking to this highway was one of the ways student protests could get on national television, something she believes motivated the decision by protest leaders.

“If they could stop that traffic, even if it was very dangerous, they could make the news,” she said.

“Everybody’s got a different opinion about taking to the streets, but they felt like that was the only way to get their voices heard.”

The Des Moines Register reported on May 10, 1972, that 3,000 protesters attended and took to the highway.

On May 9, 1970, the Old Armory Temporary was burned down. On the 10th, Boyd allowed students the choice to leave campus without taking finals, offering them their current grades. In 1972, the DI reported that Iowa ranked second in the nation in increased student protests on college campuses, behind only New York.

The cause of the 1970 fire was never determined, but it was suspected to be arson at the time.

Disaster and resiliency at the UI The university has recovered from several natural disasters in its 175-year history, including floods and fires.

Ryan Hansen News Reporter Over the course of the University of Iowa’s 175year history, the campus community has experienced a wide range of disasters including tornadoes, flooding, and fires.

The most impactful events include the 2008 flood and fires at South Hall, the old library building, and the Old Capitol Building.

The 2008 flood inflicted $750 million in damage to 22 campus buildings, including the old Hancher Auditorium building, which was destroyed in 2013, and the Art Building, which has since been decommissioned.

Mary Bennett, historian and archivist at the State Historical Society of Iowa, has lived through the three most recent disasters in her 50 years in Iowa City. Bennett graduated from the university in the 1970s.

Bennett said she remembers the wide-ranging destruction caused by the 2008 flood and that it was generally difficult to get around town with Dubuque Street and the Park Road Bridge submerged.

“I think that the whole community was so impacted,” Bennett said. “There wasn’t anybody who wasn’t touched by the floods, whether you were a university student or just someone who lived in the town.”

In those times of peril, Bennett said she was touched by moments of unity in the community, including sandbagging efforts around the Iowa Memorial Union and transporting books from the basement to higher levels of the Main Library.

“Hundreds of students and volunteers came to empty out the books and materials that were vulnerable right before the water hit,” Bennett said.

“I remember seeing them passing books [from] one person to another. It was wonderful seeing the university community step up like that to rescue those treasures.”

UI Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations Rod Lehnertz, who was the director of planning, design, and construction in 2008, called the Iowa flood one of the biggest moments in campus history.

It was a moment, he said, where everyone “lost their title.”

Student-athletes, incarcerated people, and a multitude of other groups pitched in to help with flood preparation. Lehnertz said once those barriers gave way, they were there to help with recovery.

“Everyone dropped what they were doing, dropped their egos, and tried to help in any way they could,” Lehnertz said. “It was remarkable, some of the most challenging days of my career and yet, also — without a doubt — some of the most inspiring.”

Iowa Flood Center cofounder Larry Weber, was the director of the hydraulics program in 2008. He said the memory of the flood that will always stick with him comes from taking the first shift manning the water pumps at the hydraulics building on the night before the river crested.

“It was dark, it was empty, it was void of people,” Weber said of walking on the blacked-out Burlington Street Bridge that night. “It was quiet, sort of peaceful — the calm just before the storm or just before the crest.”

Weber said there were some positive effects of the flood. As people looked for solutions to prevent similar flooding from ever happening again, the Iowa Legislature began the process of creating the Iowa Flood Center, Weber’s academic research program, to study flooding in Iowa.

Fire at the Old Capitol Weber was also on campus when the Old Capitol Building caught fire on Nov. 20, 2001, during a regilding project on the dome.

While using blowtorches to remove the current coat of paint, contractors ignited the dome and it collapsed, causing widespread water and fire damages.

Weber remembers being in the engineering department chair’s office at the time, on the fourth floor of Seamans Center with windows overlooking the Pentacrest. He was in shock when he saw the roof of the building catch fire.

“Flames had just popped through the rooftop,” Weber said. “Within moments, of course, we heard sirens and the fire departments were all showing up to put the fire out.”

Bennett said the contractors were negligent to not recognize the historic dome’s potential flammability.

“It’s something I’m personally very chagrined about because they didn’t do it right,” Bennett said.

“They knew they were dealing with a treasure that was on the national register. It’s a national landmark.”

Bennett said it was “horrifying” to see the whole dome collapse when she entered the building on the night of the fire. That night, her goal was to save some of the over 33,000 books in the library.

Her efforts included closing and covering books, moving paintings off the walls, and moving an antique wooden bench away from the water-damaged interior walls. Repairs on the building took more than four years before it

Twenty-five thousand books destroyed in 1897 campus fire In 1897, North Hall, home of the university library at the time, caught fire because of an early morning lightning strike. A fire broke out and, though firemen were quickly on the scene, nothing could be done to save the library.

Bennett said an assistant librarian and a few firemen entered the second floor, the location of the library, in an attempt to save some of the more than 33,000 books it contained.

As the librarian and fire-

fighters fled with armfuls of books, Bennett said the roof collapsed, trapping a fireman under the debris.

He was killed in the fire.

A total of 25,000 books were destroyed in the fire, Bennett said. The library was one of the largest west of the Mississippi at the time.

North Hall was rebuilt following the fire and stood between MacBride Hall and Jessup Hall on the Pentacrest until 1949.

Four years later, in March 1901, one of South Hall’s ten chimneys also caught fire as the result of a different lightning strike. The fire caused massive damage that destroyed one of the few

buildings on campus at the time, Bennett said.

South Hall and the adjacent Medical Building were destroyed. The medical library’s 1,200 books were reduced to just 17 by the blaze.

These disasters over the university’s first 175 years show the unity and resilience of the UI’s campus community, Bennett said.

“People came together to rescue the treasures they could and then rebuilt the campus,” Bennett said. “One of the state’s most valuable assets [is] a premiere academic institution that rivals the nation’s best.”

Wilson to be installed in Hancher ceremony

George’s Best Gyros finds home on Iowa Ave.

President Barbara Wilson, the third woman to hold the university’s top position, will be ceremoniously recognized as president on the UI’s175th anniversary.

Kate Perez News Reporter University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson will be officially recognized as the UI’s president at her installment on Friday.

The event will be part of the university’s upcoming 175th anniversary celebration, and will have musical performances and remarks from Ted Abel, director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute and chair and executive officer of the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology.

The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday at Hancher Auditorium.

For Wilson, this event is a way to celebrate the UI and all its achievements over the last 175 years, she said in an interview with The Daily Iowan on Feb. 14.

“It’s kind of phenomenal, when you think about it. We were one of the first to do so many things, including be in existence,” Wilson said.

“It’s a great time to reflect, to think about our past, to remind ourselves of all that we’ve accomplished, and then to begin to look forward. It’s a celebration really. What a great opportunity for me as the new president to be part of it.”

One of the results of these protests was the creation of the student regent position for the Iowa state Board of Regents in 1973.

The in-between years UI Community and Student Life Archivist Aiden Bettine said fighting authority continued in smaller ways for a few years, following the large Vietnam demonstrations.

“Campus has never been quiet,” he said. “You may not have as many resounding movements that seem as coherent or dominant as the anti-Vietnam protests or IFR [The Iowa Freedom Riders], but there were still protests across time.”

In the 1980s, there were anti-apartheid protests and divestment campaigns surrounding African liberation in South Africa, Bettine said.

“Take Back the Night” protests put women’s liberation on the frontlines as well.

“If you look at a moment, or even a decade, you’ll find protests. You’ll always find protests,” he said. “There may have not been one clear voice always, but no one was quiet.”

Adding to history in the 2020s Today, UI students continue to add their voices to the university’s long history of civil unrest. The Pentacrest has again been the scene of various protests just two years into the 2020s.

Bettine said there have been dozens of protest topics in the 21st century, which isn’t typical for barely 20 years.

as the 175th anniversary is “happenstance,” and she’d rather there be more attention on the university.

“I think we’ve got the balance about right, because I really see my installation as part of a way to showcase the history of this university,” Wilson said. “It’s a good question, because I’ve been here for seven months, right? This maybe should have happened earlier, and in some places it does happen early.”

In an email to the DI, Richard Lewis, UI senior research writer, wrote that Abel will highlight the good Wilson has already done in her seven months on campus.

It is tremendous that she has engaged the community, and has listened to the community,” Abel wrote.

“She shares our sense of purpose, not just academically, but also socially, that we are here to support the wellbeing of everyone in our university, our students, our faculty, and our staff.”

The installation will also highlight Wilson’s leadership while obtaining the $70 million gift from the Richard O. Jacobson Foundation to support a new planned patient care tower for UI Hospitals & Clinics.

“She is a president who drives these kinds of gifts,”

Abel wrote. “With someone who can advocate with us, we can build a community that can connect to Iowa and the world. From day one, she has been seeking ways to be transformative at Iowa.”

Wilson said she thinks that the COVID-19 pandemic got in the way of her being installed earlier. Because her installation was pushed back, it is now able to be more of a celebration.

Installation means that Wilson will be formally and ceremoniously recognized as the new president. However, she said nothing about her job will change after her installation ceremony is over.

“So, it’s really a ceremony, but it has a ceremonial aspect that I think is important for an institution because of the celebration of where we’ve been and where we’re going,” she said.

Wilson said she is excited to showcase the UI’s history of advancing gender and leadership.

“We have more women deans, we have had three women presidents,” Wilson said. “Iowa is a place where all things can happen, and we should celebrate that.”

“The things that we’re seeing in the last 22 years of the Pentacrest and protests that have happened on campus, is that diverse students at a predominately white institution know the power of their voice and their advocacy,” he said. “We’ve seen disability rights protests, protests around cultural centers, and them emerging.

We’ve seen a continual push.

We can argue that the 21st century affords a lot of people raising their voices here.”

Most recently, the Pentacrest has served as a meeting place for some of the most powerful protests and movements the UI has seen since the Vietnam War. During the Black Lives Matter protests of summer 2020, the Pentacrest was used more than any other spot in Iowa City for protesters to gather. Over the two weeks of protests following the murder of George Floyd, local activists returned to the Pentacrest at nearly every event.

Protesters paralleled their 1970s’ counterparts when they took to the highway. Unlike then, however, Black Lives Matter protesters took to the highway multiple times.

University students aren’t the only people using the Old Capitol as a meeting grounds for protests. Iowa City high school students also use the Old Capitol’s steps to express their views, including marching out of in-person classes at Iowa City City High to march for reproductive rights in December 2021.

The Sudanese community in Johnson County also staged a demonstration outside Schaffer and MacBride Halls to protest the coup that occurred in Sudan in October 2021.

At the beginning of the

fall 2021 semester, hundreds of UI students visited the Pentacrest several times to protest against the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity on campus when two of its members who were accused of sexual assault in 2020.

As Hawkeyes look back on the 175th anniversary of their university, McCartney said understanding the past — including student and community protests — enables current and future students to know more and understand the UI better.

Bennett said Iowa City and the UI have remained idealistic throughout time because students have voices to share.

“The young people that hope that things can change, there is a coterie of people in this town who would like to see change take place,” she said. “The protesters we saw then, and even now after George Floyd — man, they were radical people in those crowds. They were ready to make their voices heard and they still are.”

Bettine said the Pentacrest continues to serve the Iowa City and the UI communities well, as the stage for dozens of protests where the two populations mix.

“The Pentacrest is where the line between the university and the city blurs,” he said. “The Pentacrest is a landmark in Iowa City and the central hub of campus.

But when you’re standing outside and protesting on the Pentacrest, you most likely are standing inward and facing the Capitol. But if that protest turns into a march, you turn around. You walk into and parade down the street. It’s just a very visible place in our community.”

Late at night on the weekends, college students can commonly be found swarming George’s Best Gyros’ food stand in the Ped Mall. By April, the stand will have its own brick-and-mortar location as well.

The announcement from owner Mark Paterno comes less than two months after the opening of Marco’s Game Day on South Clinton Street. Paterno also recently opened a permanent home for the Marco’s Island food stand on Linn Street. He started the business in 2000.

George’s Best Gyros’ new location had previously been home to Dumpling Darling, which closed in December.

George’s Best Gyros has been an Iowa City food cart since the 1980s. Paterno bought it in 2006.

He said he’d always been jealous of the speed of George’s Best Gyros’ stand in comparison to his grilled cheese stand.

“Every grilled cheese sandwich is custom made and, best-case scenario, we can make it in 90 seconds and the gyros were just so much faster,” Paterno said. “I had always wanted to buy it, and one day George was ready to sell it, and it just worked out.”

The new George’s Best Gyros location will have an emphasis on efficiency, Paterno said, as it will have the smallest menu out of any of his restaurants. The restaurant will serve gyros, hot dogs, and fries.

“It’s potentially the best business model I’ve ever had because it’s going to be so lean and sleek and focused,” he said.

Paterno said the gyro place differs from his

other restaurants, which have an abundance of different items on the menu.

Paterno said it’s a bad habit of his to create too many options.

Like Marco’s Island and Marco’s Grilled Cheese, George’s Best Gyros will have late-night hours geared toward college students.

Rubye Ney, an employee at Marco’s Island and Marco’s Gameday, said the late-night hours will be great for bringing in people from the downtown bars. Adding the limited menu may also help the restaurant get customers in and out of the door quickly, she said.

Ney said the location could also be a big help.

“I think the Dumpling Darling space has always been prime real estate,” Ney said. “And I can imagine that with George’s Gyros being really close to the Ped Mall, it’ll be a really popular late-night restaurant.”

Paterno said his success during the pandemic has come from his longevity in the business, having owned Marco’s Grilled Cheese for over two decades. He said his career

as a realtor also allows him to have a source of income outside his businesses.

Having brick and mortar locations has benefited Paterno in the past, he said. Marco’s Game Day previously only operated on gamedays, but the decision to move it to a fulltime location allowed it to have more space for Hawkeye merchandise that it didn’t have outside Kinnick.

“I had two small warehouses full of Iowa Hawkeye stuff,” Paterno said. “... It’s money sitting in a garage essentially, and I didn’t want to have to wait until next football season to try to recoup some of that money.”

Dylan Chambers, a store clerk at Marco’s Game Day, said the store has gotten off to a good start and should continue to improve as the weather warms up.

“It’s just going to have a bunch of different stuff that people haven’t seen before and we urge them to come check it out for themselves,” he said.

Looking ahead to the next 25 The University of Iowa has a commendable history, but more can be done in sustainability, student and faculty recruitment, and tuition to propel it into the future.

DI Editorial Board As Iowa’s oldest institution for higher education, the University of Iowa has a lot to be proud of. The UI is not only acclaimed as one of the best medical centers in the country, but praised for its excellence in arts and sciences. Beyond education, the UI strives to make the campus an inclusive and innovative environment.

In 175 years, the UI has made several progressive steps in the right direction.

The university is a leader in promoting sustainability, equity, and accessibility. But, by no means is our job over.

In the next 25 years, we want to see the UI address environmental concerns and move toward a more sustainable future, improve racial and gender demographics among faculty and staff, and make education more accessible by improving tuition cost.

Environmental concerns “Sustainability must and will become a central priority of all aspects of our university enterprise — our operations, our academic mission, and our responsibilities to the greater society,’’ former UI President Sally Mason said over a decade ago.

Sustainability has become a central concern to the UI in recent years. On Earth Day in 2008, Mason called for a newfound commitment to achieving sustainability locally and globally through its work to serve Iowa and the world with education, research, and service.

This commitment initiated seven sustainability goals for 2020, including net-negative energy growth, and more student sustainability opportunities.

Last year, the UI announced each goal was met or exceeded, with the exception of decreasing waste, which is still in progress.

In April 2020, the UI released the 2030 sustainability goals framework. This proposal includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, embedding sustainability into campus culture, and preparing students to live and work in the 21st century through sustainability education.

In addition, the UI announced it will be coal-free by 2025 by transitioning to biomass and other renewable energy sources.

While we value the commitment the UI has made to sustainability, we need the university to do more to address environmental concerns.

The UI has a considerable waste problem. While the university set the goal to divert 60 percent of waste to a recycling or composting facility, the diversion rate only hit 36 percent. The percentage of overall campus waste actually increased in the past decade, from 16.2 million pounds in 2010 to 19 million pounds in 2019.

Moving off coal is not nearly enough in the face of the catastrophic threat posed by a warming planet.

Although biomass is a cleaner energy source than coal, it still produces emissions.

The UI needs to not only reduce its carbon emissions, but eliminate them.

The university needs a substantial plan to either switch entirely to renewable energy like solar or wind, or offset its carbon emissions in other ways.

Until then, it will continue to contribute to the dangers of climate change.

The progress the UI has made in sustainability is

commendable, work still needs to be done to improve the university’s waste and biomass reliance.

Recruitment of students and faculty — especially from underrepresented communities The UI was among the first public universities to accept students regardless of race or gender. While our university has made progress and has made achievements when it comes to diversity in the institution, we would like to see improvement in recruitment of faculty and students from underrepresented communities.

Currently, the majority of the UI’s population, 71.5 percent, identifies as white. Black or African American students make up 3.01 percent, Asian American students make up 3.19 percent, and Hispanic or Latino studentsmake up 4.56 percent.

The UI has a variety of organizations and centers on campus that celebrate diversity such as the Center for Diversity and Enrichment, cultural centers, and various student organizations. While it’s an important step that the university has taken strides to create an inclusive environment on campus, the DI Editorial Board wants to see the UI recruit from underrepresented communities to add to a diverse student population.

Additionally, we believe the university can better recruit not only students, but faculty and staff of color. Out of 1,300 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, only 23 percent are minorities and 35 percent are women. In the universi-

It’s no secret that the UI has struggled with the retention of faculty of color.

Turnover in the diversity executive position; professors voicing their concerns over the UI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion document; and the loss of Black professors in the English Department and elsewhere has sparked debate on campus over the UI’s DEI values.

Recruiting and retaining faculty and staff from underrepresented communities will not only bring in necessary voices to help diversify higher education, but they will also serve as needed role models for students from these communities.

Making higher education affordable Tuition for higher educa-

tion was already expensive before the pandemic.

A survey from the ECMC group found that only 53 percent of high school students are likely to attend college, and that students are focusing on career change and post-college employment.

At the UI, enrollment rates have been on the decline since fall 2017. International student enrollment has also dropped consistently over the past five years, with the rate dropping 9.6 percent from fall 2020 to fall 2021.

Making tuition affordable will help expand the opportunity for more students to pursue higher education and attend the university.

While there are limitations as to what the UI can do to make tuition more affordable for students, it’s important that our administration advocates for affordable tuition to groups such as the state Board of

Regents and the Iowa Legislature.

Over the years, Iowa Republicans and the Legislature have decreased funding for Iowa’s universities.

While Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ budget proposal last year recommended a $15 million increase for state universities and the state Senate proposed a $8.2 million increase, lawmakers ultimately provided no increase in 2021.

With the increase in tuition rates and the decrease in state funding, it’s crucial that the UI pushes to make higher education a possibility for more students. This would potentially help increase student enrollment rates, thereby emphasizing the importance of the regent universities to Iowa Republicans and possibly persuade them to increase state funding.

The complicated relationship between the Middle East and the U.S. While some Jordanians hate American politics, many still love the country’s culture.

Shahab Khan Opinions Columnist If there’s one thing that I have noticed in Amman, it is that Jordanians love American culture, yet hate American politics.

In Amman, McDonald’s is considered fine dining and everyone wants to own a brand new pair of Nikes.

Theaters are filled with American films and the kids prefer Ariana Grande to Arab music.

In contrast, if you mention the name George Bush, you might get a shoe thrown at you.

These seemingly contradictory attitudes Jordanians hold toward the U.S. is reflective of the hegemonic role that the U.S. has played in the Middle East.

Although it would be ignorant to blame American foreign policy as the sole reason for the woes of the Middle East, Uncle Sam has helped sustain the dysfunc-

tion in the region, as the consequences of its actions have led to the current geopolitical rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

From the 1950s onward, the American president has been the true king of the region as American policymakers have dictated the circumstances surrounding cultural, political, and economic issues plaguing the Middle East.

The Suez Crisis and the rise of a new top dog In the late 1950s, the Egyptian President and Arab icon Gamal Abdul Nasser had a dream.

He was going to unite all the Arabs under the banner of a socialist state that would expel the dominant British and French colonial powers from the Middle East. In 1956, Nasser took the initial steps to achieve his goals when he nationalized the British- and French-owned Suez Canal.

The two decrepit empires did not take too kindly to an Arab telling them they couldn’t control global trade. Along with Israel, the British and French invaded

the Suez and attempted to depose Nasser.

After a week, the Europeans embarrassingly withdrew from the Suez in defeat. It seemed that Nasser and his idea of a united Arab state would actualize.

During the crisis, the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviets was quietly simmering in the background and both superpowers had an interest in bringing the Middle East under their sphere of influence. There was just not enough room for the old guard.

In short, the Suez crisis did not mark the coming of the revolution that Nasser promised. Instead, it marked the beginning of a transition as the U.S. was the new external power that would dominate the political, social, and cultural trends of the Middle East.

As I timidly strolled into the house, the first words I heard out of the professor’s mouth were: “I am a Stalinist and supporter of Saddam Hussein, but I love Colorado. It is such a beautiful state with nice mountains. America is my favorite country.”

Another surreal interaction I had regarding Saddam Hussein took place in a taxi whose driver had Saddam’s face on the back of the car. When I told the driver I was American, he proceeded to rail against the U.S. and how it had ruined the Middle East by deposing the Iraqi dictator.

He then asked me to call the U.S. embassy and approve his visa application process.

“I love America! It is the best country in the world!”

He retorted when I asked why on Earth he wanted to go to a country he seemingly hated.

The Iraq War and the Bush Administration’s decision to topple Saddam’s reign had profound implications for the region. The brutality of Saddam’s Iraq

has been ingrained into the minds of Americans and does not need to be reintroduced in these pages.

When the U.S. deposed Saddam, Iraq plunged into sectarian violence and Iran was able to gain considerable influence over the new Shia government through its network of proxy groups.

Iran’s aggressive policy of turning weak, destabilized states such as Iraq into puppet regimes spurred the Saudi monarchy into action as it realized it also wanted to engage in neo-colonialism.

In 2014, trouble brewed on Saudi’s southern border as the country of Yemen was conquered by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

Fearing that what happened in Iraq would repeat itself, the Saudis responded by launching a devastating air campaign that has caused the worst humanitarian crisis in the world — an air campaign bankrolled by the U.S.

The idea of America in the Middle East Despite the animosity many Arabs seem to harbor

against American foreign policy, they still yearn for their societies to be more like America, as seen in my interactions with ordinary Jordanians.

Every night, to close out the day, I have a cup of tea with my host family where we either chat away for hours or all laugh and watch a movie. On one of these nights, my host brother admitted he wanted Jordan to be more like America.

“I have a sister in America and every time she comes back to tell us stories, I want to move to America,” he said.

His comments, along with the remarks of the taxi driver and professor have lingered with me through my first month in Jordan.

They are representative of a truth that I have learned about the U.S. The cliché that we are a shining city on a hill still exists in the minds of many people in foreign countries.

In other words, no matter how they view U.S. foreign policy, some people will always want their country to be more like the U.S.

Black student involvement at UI initiates change By using their voices, Black students, faculty, and staff have communicated and initiated ways the University of Iowa, a predominantly white university, can improve to become a more inclusive and equitable institution.

some courses to make them less Eurocentric and whitewashed.

Darrian Lane, president of the Black Student Union at the UI, said he joined the organization because he wanted to create a safe place for Black students on campus.

The union focuses on bringing unity through academic excellence, community engagement, and cultural projects. It’s held shoe drives, discussions around hair care, and artist drives to display visual art created by Black UI students.

“I wanted to do more with them to get involved on campus,” he said. “I wanted to give them proper resources for guidance.”

Lane said he didn’t always feel part of a community when he came to the UI campus. ”When I first came in here, the only Black people I knew were on the floor that I stayed on,” he said.

In fall 2021, the UI Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department recorded that only 3.1 percent of students at the university are Black.

Black students at the University of Iowa have a long history of creating needed change.

Alexander G. Clark, Jr. was the first African American student to graduate with a law degree from the UI College of Law. In Hawkeye sports, Richard Culberson was the first African American basketball player in the Big Ten Conference in 1944.

The list goes on to include some of the greats, such as Frederick Wayman “Duke’’ Slater, who attended the College of Law at the UI and played football during his academic career.

He became the first African American lineman in NFL history. Slater Residence Hall and Duke Slater Field in Kinnick Stadium were both named after him.

These accomplishments were made in the face of adversity, however. When Slater attended the UI, Black students were prohibited from residing on campus. In fact, they were not allowed to live in the residence halls until 1945.

Students like Slater experienced racial discrimination and segregation in

the early 20th century.

Today, Black students continue to initiate change at the university, using their voices to point out disparities and propel new ideas forward to create a welcoming environment at a predominantly white university.

Talia Howard, a dance and enterprise leadership student, is currently involved in a ballet club at the UI. She said she recently learned that communication is not just about trying to get a message across, but exactly how to get the message across.

In her case, the message included ways to improve the UI Department of Dance at a time when the department was not including African diaspora dance techniques in dance movement.

“It was a way I had to express my concerns about how we were only learning the same thing for them to truly understand instead of just yelling at them, like, “You’re not giving me enough,’” Howard said.

Howard said the department now has a new instructor to teach more equity and African diaspora movements and techniques, and has renamed

Idani teaches creative writing courses that focus on Black literature and traditions.

“I wanted to design it around Black literary traditions, to really focus on Black writers, Black cultures, and Black approaches to writing in all of my classes that I’ve taught here,” he said.

Before working at the UI, Idani attended two graduate programs, and he said he has grown used to being in unfamiliar environments where he was one of only a few Black students.

“I think that you get kind of used to being one of the few,” he said. “You develop a way to kind of navigate these environments.”

Idani is also an advisor for the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, where he said he is always willing and excited to give advice to students.

“It’s kind of like that each one teaches one — we have to support ourselves,” he said. “It’s peer support and peer learning.”

Idani said that, although there are resources on campus like the Afro House, they have been limited in what they can provide. He is hopeful that those resources will increase as activities transfer from online back to being in person.

The Afro House at the UI has 13 affiliated student organizations, including Hubbard Scholars, the African Student Association, and Sista Speak.

“I hope that there’s an opportunity for the university as an institution

and the administration to really partner with a lot of these incoming students and newer students in developing the organizations that they want to see,” Idani said.

Idani said he is particularly interested in supporting first-generation Black male students.

“There’s a lot of supportive need within that particular group, in general, that I really hope that the university faculty administrators can key on to provide that support,” he said.

The Daily Iowan reported in September 2021 that students felt concerned about the UI’s lack of diversity among the faculty and students. A 2020 DEI Climate Campus Survey showed that 50 percent of faculty and staff who identified as part of an underrepresented minority said they have seriously considered leaving the UI. Jada McDonald, a public health student, said while her experience as a student has been hindered because of the pandemic, she ultimately enjoys attending the UI. She does, however, believe the UI needs to try harder at making steps toward equity.

“We need to teach people that it’s okay to be uncomfortable,” McDonald said. “It’s okay to learn new things, and to remember that we’re still in a society that does not treat people of color fairly, specifically Black people.”

From the youngest self-made female billionaire to one of the most famous wire fraud criminals, the story of Elizabeth Holmes’ rise and fall isn’t over yet. Based on journalist Rebecca Jarvis’ eponymous ABC Audio podcast, The Dropout will premiere on Hulu on March 3.

The seven-episode miniseries will delve into the fraud behind Theranos, the breakthrough health technology company founded by Holmes and run by Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani. Founded in 2003, Theranos promised to revolutionize the blood-testing industry by developing new, efficient testing methods that required a comparatively small amount of blood to garner extremely accurate readings.

By 2018, these “accurate” readings proved to be greatly overexaggerated, and both Holmes and Balwani were convicted of several counts of wire fraud against their investors. Currently, both figures await possible sentencings of millions of dollars in restitution, and up to 20 years in federal prison.

Elizabeth Meriwether, creator of New Girl, produced the series alongside screenwriters and TV producers Liz Heldens and Liz Hannah. Jarvis, who created the award-winning podcast of the same name while working as ABC News’ business, economics, and technology correspondent, will also produce The Dropout.

The Dropout will star actress Amanda Seyfried as Holmes and British actor Naveen Andrews as Balwani. Other cast members include a variety of well-known stars, like William H. Macy, Laurie Metcalf, Dylan Minnette, and Alan Ruck, among several others who will play additional notable figures surrounding the Theranos scandal.

Originally, Saturday Night Live actress Kate McKinnon was set to star as Holmes, but she exited the project in February 2021. Despite being attached to The Dropout since its conception as a series in 2019, McKinnon cited other work-related conflicts as her reason for leaving the production.

According to the content of its trailer which dropped on Feb. 7, the miniseries will take on a dramatic tone despite several of its more comedic cinematic connections within its cast and crew. Whatever genre the series may fall under, it will surely be entertaining to see Holmes’ scandalous story told on screen.

175 years on display Held in the University of Iowa Main Library Gallery, We Are Hawkeyes: Celebrating 175 Years of Student Life at the University of Iowa explores what’s at the center of the UI — student life.

Anaka Sanders Arts Reporter From marching to the Pentacrest to protest the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia in 1999, to storming Duke Slater Field at Kinnick Stadium after the Iowa vs. Penn State football game last fall — the vastness of student life has always been at the heart of the University of Iowa. Now, it’s been documented inside the exhibit walls of the Main Library Gallery.

When it came to the university’s 175th anniversary, archivists for UI libraries knew they needed to do something special. For Aiden Bettine, community and student life archivist for University Archives, the exhibit couldn’t just be a narrative of events and how they happened — it needed a central theme.

Focusing on student life throughout history at the UI was the obvious decision, and so We Are Hawkeyes: Celebrating 175 Years of Student Life at the University of Iowa was born. The exhibit opened in the Main Library Gallery on Jan. 18, and will remain open through July 3.

“If you answer the question of ‘Why does the university exist?’ – it’s to create a space and provide education to students,” Bettine said. “The thing that we should be celebrating most for this 175th anniversary is the thousands upon thousands of students who have stepped foot on this campus and impacted the history of this institution.”

The exhibit is divided into several general categories focusing on specific areas of interest, ranging from “Our Voices in Print” and “Raising Our Voices” to the basics like music and scholarship.

It was important to Special Collections Archivist David McCartney that the different sections represent the different ways that students live their college experience.

“Everyone has their own experience in college, and we bring that individual experience with us throughout our lives after we leave college,” McCartney said.

Beginning in a counterclockwise rotation around the exhibit, the “Our Voices in Print” glass display case is the first item that visitors will encounter.

Over the UI’s 175 years, many student publications have come and gone. On display are newspapers, like an October 2021 issue of The Daily Iowan, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2018, and humor-oriented magazines, like the popular Frivol parody magazine that began in the 1920s and ran for at least 30 years.

Another focus of the exhibit revolves around the Iowa Memorial Union, which has served as the central hub for student life since its construction in 1926. The IMU was built with the intent of honoring people affiliated with the university who served in the Great War, but now also represents those who served in World War II, Vietnam, and other conflicts.

Hanging on the wall in the southwest corner of the exhibit are the blueprints for the building, and a blackand-white photograph of students working at the soda fountain that used to occupy part of the IMU’s space in the 1940s.

Of all the schools in the Big Ten, McCartney said, the UI is regarded historically as the campus for the performing and liberal arts.

The exhibit includes items like a program from a Glee Concert in 1905, and a card from the Mary Ingham Dance Card Collection from the 1920s-30s, which were given as souvenirs to dance attendees “We want to recognize that, whether you’re a major in dance or in the school of music or not, there are students who participate just because they enjoy it or want to find a way of expression,” McCartney said.

The center of the exhibit houses a large display wall with photographs of students participating in events across campus.

What could be considered a mundane picture of students studying in the UI’s Main Library in 1951 is fascinating to compare to a modern-day version of the same — making current students wonder if, in another 75 years, they too could be on an exhibit wall.

In the back left corner of the exhibit are cases filled with memorabilia of Greek Life, the Scottish Highlanders — Iowa’s drum and bagpipe corps that performed from the 1930s through the 80s — and of students who participated in military activities.

McCartney said that, when putting together the Greek Life case, the curators wanted to recognize that the main reason behind the creation of many fraternities and sororities was because of restrictions on Black students.

“Until 1946, they could not live in university housing,” McCartney said. “That forced Black students to live off campus, and for many, the option was organizing a fraternity or a sorority.”

The exhibit shows a picture of a newspaper clipping from Nov. 13, 1984, announcing the opening of Alpha Phi Alpha, at the time a new Greek organization for Black students.

Rounding the southeast corner is a striking collection of flyers and photos titled “Raising Our Voices.”

Hanging on the wall beside the collection is a photo taken from a yearbook of the 1960s tradition, “Soapbox StandOff.” Every Wednesday morning around lunchtime, students would have the opportunity to stand a soapbox and say whatever was on their minds.

In the display case is a photograph of then-student Steve Smith burning his draft card in 1965 on that same soapbox — an act that had become illegal just two months before.

“It was the first time it happened on a college campus, which I thought was significant being that it was in middle America,” McCartney said. “That opposition to the war was everywhere, not just a few elite east or west coast campuses.”

Protests have been an important facet of student life since the start of the UI’s history, and they have continued to occur as recently as fall 2021, when students organized to protest the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, known as FIJI, following sexual assault allegations involving

Whether on a hyperlocal or national scale, UI students have been involved in many movements protesting for change.

“I think it shows and demonstrates the awareness, care, and knowledge that University of Iowa students have always had about what’s happening around them at multiple scales,” Bettine said. “It’s not just about what’s on campus, but they’re a part of global conversations and global protests.”

Flyers from current protests are becoming harder

to collect, with information now spreading online and through social media.

Luckily, the UI subscribes to a service called the Internet Archive – a system that electronically captures websites and preserves them as they appeared on that day, McCartney said.

A future exhibit will likely contain more digital records of protests and other events for future audiences, along with tangible objects.

One of McCartney’s favorite pieces in the exhibit is a journal entry from George Ludwig, one of James Van Allen’s graduate students,

depicting the morning of the first space exploration launched by the U.S. government, Explorer I. Explorer I was developed and built, in part, by Van Allen and his graduate students in conjunction with NASA at the UI. “I keep thinking about what that moment must have been like for him.

He was maybe 26 at the time,” McCartney said.

“Eventually, he went on to a very successful career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.”

To close out the exhibit,

an assemblage of circa-1975 dorm room furniture was collected, from a rust-colored floral couch to a trusty landline phone.

“I hope that people feel moved by the exhibit and find themselves connected to it, even if it’s just one item or one object in the exhibit that makes somebody feel connected,” Bettine said. “I hope the larger arc is that student history is important, and students are what make campus thrive and be this kind of incredible place.”

Lan Samantha Chang pioneers at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop Lan Samantha Chang always dreamed of becoming a writer, but she never thought she would become the first Asian American and female director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Chang has spent her time as director writing for change.

Anaka Sanders Arts Reporter She was recently named “one of eight women writers changing the world” by Oprah Daily, but that’s only one of Lan Samantha Chang’s many accomplishments.

Chang began her writing journey when she entered the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 1991. She received her MFA in 1993. She visited the workshop as a visiting professor a few times after graduating, and it was during one of those visits that someone suggested she apply for the director position.

“I had seen the workshop from many angles as a student and as a faculty member, so I had experience with the program,” Chang said. “It’s a really special program to me.”

Sixteen years ago, Chang made history when she was selected to be the director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, not only as the first woman, but also the first Asian American to hold the position.

When she was a student in the 90s, the fiction program was largely made up of white men.

“I feel that the university has been very supportive of writing and writers all along, and that I was given permission to think about taking the program in a direction that would include writers from many backgrounds to make it possible for their stories to be told,” Chang said.

Chang said she dreamed of being a writer since she was only 4 years old — before she could even read. Though her parents encouraged her to go into medicine or science, something more practical in their eyes, she stuck with her passion for writ-

Chang’s new book, The Family Chao, was released in February, but had been put on the backburner since she became the workshop’s director, she said. She added that she was able to get back into the writing process over the last six years.

Set in the Midwest in the Chao family’s Americanized Chinese restaurant, the story’s first half, titled “They See Themselves,” leads up to the death of the family’s tyrannical father.

The second half, titled “The

World Sees Them,” follows the trial of one of the three sons for the murder of their father.

Chang said there are two different messages she wants people to think about after reading both halves of the book.

“I want people to have the experience of being with this family as they go through a few crazy, hectic, somewhat dysfunctional days around Christmas time in the first half of the book,” Chang said. “Then in the second half, I’d like them

to see the way that those days are processed and viewed by the culture that surrounds them.”

When writing the novel, Chang said she enjoyed drawing from memories of her childhood, her favorites being some of the foods she ate.

Her parents immigrated from China to her hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin, in the 1960s, a time when there weren’t that many options to find Asian food. They would drive to Chicago just to buy staple items like soy sauce, tofu,

and certain vegetables.

“My parents encountered unfamiliar and sort of unusual vegetables to them at the supermarket, and they would stir fry them,” Chang said. “They stir fried iceberg lettuce.”

The Family Chao was released this month and has already been chosen as Barnes and Noble’s book club pick for February. In January, Chang was included in a list of eight trailblazing authors in an article published in Oprah Daily.

Chang said she admires

Oprah, and it was an honor and exciting to be a part of that article. As an author constantly striving toward change, she has many ideas and goals to achieve.

“I think it’s very important for us to read stories from people in all parts of this country and from all backgrounds,” Chang said.

“I think it’s important for the literary culture of this country to reflect the stories of all the people who live here.”

The UI Field House is hardly the first building Wirsum changed with art.

Wirsum was part of a Chicago-based art group called “The Hairy Who” in the 1960s. Wirsum, Jim Falconer, Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, and Suellen Rocca were the group’s six members — all of whom attended the Art Institute of Chicago.

Per the Art Institute of Chicago’s website, The Hairy Who revitalized the art scene in Chicago by mounting “unconventional displays of bright, bold graphic work” on the city’s south side.

The future of Wirsum’s legacy Eller said Wirsum’s art career began with an injury he sustained as a child.

Wirsum was supposedly talking to his mom from the top of the basement stairs at his childhood home.

Wirsum leaned further and further through the doorway to hear what his mother was trying to tell him as she did laundry.

A young Wirsum then fell down the steps and fractured his skull. The injury hospitalized him.

Eller believes August’s background in comics influenced the art that Karl created during his 81year lifetime.

Karl’s parents died in a car accident in 1949. The then-10-year-old Karl Wirsum was in the car when his parents collided with a tractor-trailer truck, per The Chicago Tribune. Wirsum survived the accident with minor injuries — his parents did not.

“There’s been speculation that, in a way, his work always retained a sort of childlike quality because of some of the traumatic events that happened to him as a child,” Eller said. “He still sort of stayed in the playful, childlike sort of spirit of the cartooning that was happening when he was younger.”

Karl Wirsum died of cardiac arrest at the age of 81 at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on May 6, 2021, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Wirsum’s art will help memorialize him in places like the Art Institute of Chicago and Eller’s gallery.

Chris Werner Sports Reporter Four Five of the Iowa men’s wrestling team’s 10 starters have a legitimate shot at capturing an individual Big Ten title March 5-6 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Senior 133-pounder Austin DeSanto, 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman, 165-pounder Alex Marinelli, 174-pounder Michael Kemerer, and 197-pounder Jacob Warner are all ranked in the top five nationally in their respective weight classes.

Iowa heavyweight Tony Cassioppi also fits that bill, but I feel safe saying that Minnesota’s Gable Steveson has a 99.9 percent chance to win his third straight Big Ten Championship at that weight. I’m confident saying that the defending Hodge Trophy Winner is in a league of his own at heavyweight.

Of those five Iowa wrestlers with a real shot at a conference crown, I think four of them will get the job done.

At 133, 141, 174, and 197 pounds, respectively, the Big Ten finals will likely come down to a Hawkeye versus a Nittany Lion. When Iowa and Penn State met earlier this season at Carver-Hawkeye

Arena, DeSanto, Eierman, Kemerer, and Warner each lost their matches via decision. I believe Eierman, Kemerer, and Warner will avenge their losses at the conference championships.

I think Marinelli will capture a Big Ten individual title too. He’s rated fifth in the country at his weight. The only guy he’s lost to this season is Ohio State’s Carson Kharchla, who is ranked fourth in the nation at 165 pounds.

As for Eierman, I think he’ll avenge his two most recent losses to Nick Lee to claim his second individual Big Ten Championship. “The Riddler” is currently 2-2 all-time against Lee. Warner will most likely meet Penn State’s Max Dean in the conference’s 197-pound final. Warner led Dean, 3-0, through six minutes of wrestling in their regular season matchup — though a flurry of moves ultimately propelled Dean to an 8-3 victory.

I expect Warner to come back with a vengeance at the Big Ten Championships and claim an individual league title of his own, bringing the Hawkeyes’ conference crown count to four.

In its latest projection, the NCAA revealed its top 16 seeds for the women’s basketball national tournament on Feb. 10. Indiana was picked as the sixth overall seed, with a chance to host the first two rounds of the tournament in Bloomington, Indiana.

“I mean, Indiana was picked to host, right, in

the 16 reveal,” Bluder said.

“So, I do think, 'Why not us, right? If they were in it, why not us?' And again, it depends on how we go this week, and it depends on how we do in the conference tournament, but I don't think it's out of the question.”

The hype for the Hawkeyes can come back.

They just need to be consistent.

HAWKEYE UPDATES Monika Czinano to return for fifth season in 2022-23 Iowa women’s basketball senior center Monika Czinano announced on Twitter on Sunday that she will return for her fifth season of eligibility in 2022-23.

Czinano, who hails from Watertown, Minnesota, joined the Hawkeye women’s basketball program in 2018. As a freshman, she played behind former Hawkeye Megan Gustafson in the 2018-19 season, and took over the starting center position in 2019-20.

“Being a Hawkeye has been one of the greatest privileges of my life, not only because of basketball, but also because of the people that have surrounded me with love and support,” Czinano said in a video posted to her Twitter. “I’m really excited to see where the remainder of the season takes us, because we’ve still got a lot to prove. With senior day approaching, people have been asking me a lot of questions and I wanted to clear the air. These have been the best four years of my life, so why switch things up now? I’ll be back again next year.”

Czinano earned first-team AllBig Ten honors in both her sophomore and junior seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively.

She led the Big Ten with a 67.9 shooting percentage in 2019-20, and ranked second nationally. In 2020-21, Czinano was tops in the nation with a 66.8 field goal percentage.

Czinano ranks third in the nation with a 64.9 field goal percentage so far in 2021-22.

With Czinano coming back for 2022-23, the Hawkeyes will likely return all five starters for the second straight season. Iowa’s starting five will boast four seniors — Czinano, guards Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall, and forward McKenna Warnock — and junior Caitlin Clark in 2022-23.

Iowa women’s basketball finished 20-10 overall in 2020-21, including a trip to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The NCAA gave all 2020-21 student-athletes an extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing Czinano to play a fifth season with the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes will carry three centers in 2022-23: Czinano, juniorto-be Sharon Goodman, and sophomore-to-be Addison O’Grady.

Goodman is out for the season in 2021-22 with an ACL tear. O’Grady has been acting as Czinano’s backup this season.

All the wall-painted images depict people taking a number of athletic poses around the Field House’s fourthfloor track.

Wirsum’s humanoids have been described as “alien, robotic, and superheroic.” “[The murals are] a little creepy,” said Jaymeson Harms, a frequent Field House user and first-year. “Every day you walk in and see and it’s like, ‘What’s the point of those?’”

Derek Eller, who owns an art gallery in New York that bears his own name, said Wirsum’s “pop art” draws upon a number of

styles, including comic book strips, advertising, oceanic and South American art, and European surrealism.

“Karl was heavily influenced by blues music,” Eller said. “So, [his art] is this weird amalgamation — resynthesis — of all these different influences, which sort of give it it’s quirky flavor. What he was really doing for decades was this simultaneous exploration of figuration and abstraction.

You have these sort of characters that are essentially made up of all these geometric forms.”

Eller’s gallery has featured works from Wirsum since 2010. Eller said Wirsum’s regular works of art can sell for $35,000 to $65,000. The artist’s

more historical and famous pieces can draw up to $200,000 at auctions.

According to a UI Museum of Arts commission file, Wirsum’s art in the Field House cost $49,600.

Pamela White, who served as the UI Museum of Arts director from 2008-10, said the murals in the Field House were designed by Wirsum and executed by sign painters via scaffolding.

Commission file documents indicate that Stephen Prokopoff, who was UIMA Director from 1992-2000, brought Wirsum’s work to Iowa City.

In an email exchange with The Daily Iowan, White wrote that Prokopoff was a fan and friend of Chicago-area imagists like Ed Paschke. Proko-

In a perfect world for the Hawkeyes, all the aforementioned wrestlers would mow through their brackets and allow Iowa to cruise to a team conference title.

While that would be quite a fun spectacle for me to write about and report on, I don’t believe it’ll happen. Realistically, three Hawkeyes will win individual Big Ten titles in Lincoln, Nebraska: DeSanto, Eierman, and Marinelli.

Marinelli, Eierman, and DeSanto have two things in common: experience and win-loss records. All three wrestlers are seniors with one Big Ten regular season loss on their 202122 résumés.

DeSanto lost to Penn State’s Roman Bravo-Young, 3-2, and Eierman fell to Nittany Lion senior Nick Lee, 6-4. Marinelli’s lone loss of the year came against Ohio State’s Carson Kharchla, 3-2.

Murin, Kemerer, and Warner are also seniors, but they’ve all lost twice each.

Marinelli is most likely to exorcize his regular season demons because he had never faced Kharchla before this year. With one bout against Kharchla now under his belt, Marinelli seems primed to nip Ohio State’s breakout star.
