2025 PARADE GRAND MARSHAL

M. Lee Taylor

Springville resident M. Lee Taylor has been selected to serve as grand marshal of the 2025 Art City Days Grand Parade. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. It will begin at Buckley Avenue and 400 South and travel west down 400 South to Main Street. The parade will then turn north and make it way down Main Street to 200 North where the parade will end.

Taylor’s goal in life is to make people happy through posting local history and photos along with current events that are important. He administrates a Facebook site that many residents are aware of called “You know you are from Springville when …” and Lee now has more than 7,600 followers.

Taylor was born June 27, 1946, in Springville. He attended Springville schools, graduating from Springville High School in 1964. Some of his fondest memories are of school and the friends he made there and has kept from those days.

He entered Brigham Young University in 1965 before deciding to enter the work force and take his chances with the draft. He received his draft notice in November of 1965 and entered the U.S. Army in February of 1966.

He was eventually assigned to duty on Okinawa, Japan, arriving on Christmas Eve. After spending a year on Okinawa as a generator operator on a HAWK Missile site, he requested a transfer to duty in Vietnam. The transfer was approved, and after a 30-day leave at home, he arrived in Saigon on Jan. 5, 1968. He was assigned as a crane and shovel operator at Long Binh and witnessed the deadly fireworks of the Tet offensive.

On May 5, he suffered gasoline burns in a motor pool accident and was soon evacuated to the 106th General Hospital in Yokohama, Japan. Soon home on leave after receiving

additional treatment at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, he was assigned to duty at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where he spent his last seven months of duty, being released in February of 1969. His only brother, Kent Childs Taylor, was killed in a helicopter crash in May of 1970 while serving in Vietnam.

After leaving the Army, Taylor started working at Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe and became a Journeyman Electrician before quitting in 1991. He immediately went to work for Aerotrans Corporation, directing its electrical division for two years, before quitting and joining the IBEW electrical workers union. He soon went to work for Cache Valley Electric and obtained his Master Electrician license two years later.

For the next 14 years, Cache Valley Electric had him working from coast to coast, generally in the position of a general foreman or superintendent. He retired in late 2009.

Divorced in 1986 after having had three children, he lived alone for eight years before meeting Larraine Huff and marrying her in 1994. Larraine also had three children, giving Taylor three more children to enjoy. Larraine passed away in October of 2024 after 30 and a half years of marriage. She suffered from dementia and other maladies, which slowly took a toll on her. Taylor was her total caregiver for the last 10 years or so of her life.

Taylor has traveled far and wide, visiting all 50 states as well as a dozen foreign countries. Along the way, he has tried to visit as many of his old school classmates as he could find the time and resources to visit, and this has become one of his true labors of love.

Taylor is a very active member of the Springville Senior Citizens, the Springville Historical Society and the newly reinstated Springville Chapter

of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. He is also a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

For approximately, 15 years, he has worked as part of the Springville High School Alumni Association. He also served a two-year term on Springville City’s PAR Tax Advisory Board and currently serves on the city’s Landmarks Commission.

During the past two years, he has been very involved with the Springville Museum of Art, helping the museum to gather information and arrange for interviews with former art students and Art Queens leading up to the celebration of the 100th Annual Spring Salon, which was held last year. He continues to volunteer at the museum and help with whatever he can.

Taylor and his wife Larraine have a total of six children, 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Taylor loves spending time at his cabin high in the mountains of Sanpete County.

2025 RESIDENT ARTIST

Vern Swanson

Dr. Vern G. Swanson, former director of the Springville Museum of Art, has been selected to be honored as Springville’s 2025 Art City Days Resident Artist.

Vern was born in the small saw-mill and orchard town of Central Point in southern Oregon in February 1945 to working-class parents, Oscar and Mildred. The youngest of six children, he became interested in art by the second grade. At the age of 14, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the first of his family to do so. In autumn of 1964, he attended Brigham Young University in Provo on a football scholarship, studying fine art painting and art history.

Vern had never been to Utah before, but his undying attachment to the Springville area began even before school commenced that fall. He heard there was an art museum in Springville, and since football was to begin the next day, he took the opportunity to hitchhike there. Without another thought, off he went, and his life would never be the same. He ended up running most of the way on that hot and dry August day. He had done this in Oregon where the air had moisture and oxygen plentiful. He ran past a bank in downtown Springville that had a clock that said one minute to 5 p.m.

Vern asked people where the art museum was, and they keep saying gibberish like “400 South 126 East” — what did that mean? He finally made it to the museum just as Julie SnowBerkheimer was locking up. Out of breath, he ran up to her and begged to go in, but she had errands to run and couldn’t reopen the doors. “I remember going to the ground, sweating profusely and obviously suffering begging for water,” he said. She could see that he was in trouble and broke down and let him in. And with that, the world would change for both of them.

She took him to the drinking fountain and he looked left into the step-down gallery, now renamed the Swanson Gallery. He saw statues of a buffalo and a nude Lady Godiva on horseback and

exclaimed, “That’s an Avard Fairbanks and that’s an Anna Hyatt Huntington!” With that, they went carefully through each gallery, giving a tour to each other. Before he left, they sat on a wooden bench contemplating what had just spontaneously happened. She slapped him on his knee and said, “One day you will become the curator of this gallery.” And, 16 years later, on Aug. 1 of 1980, her prophecy came true.

Upon graduating from BYU in 1969, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked at the National Gallery of Art for a year as a museum aide supervisor in charge of their museum store. Swanson returned to Utah, ostensibly to find a wife and to take a position running an art sales gallery first in Salt Lake City, then in Provo. There, he met Elaine Milne, a BYU student from Alberta, Canada, and they married in the Cardston Alberta Temple. He later worked for almost a year at an art sales gallery on Sutter Street in San Francisco. He then moved to Calgary, Alberta, where Vern worked construction for his father-in-law and coached semi-pro football. After a year, they returned to Salt Lake City, where he began a master’s degree program in art history at the University of Utah, working under Dr. Robert S. Olpin.

After graduation in 1973, he was hired by Auburn University in Alabama as an assistant professor of art and art history. After the tragic deaths of his wife and young son in April of 1975 in an automobile accident, he taught for another year. Returning to Utah in the summer of 1976, he met Judy Nielson of Lynndyl, Utah, at a special interest dance at BYU, fell in love again and married that December in Manti. They now have two daughters, Amber Swanson Mendenhall and Angela Swanson Jones, and five grandchildren.

Vern worked at Wasatch Bronzeworks foundry in Lehi for two years, then enrolled at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, in England in 1978 and “three terms later” received his Ph.D. in art history. Dr. Swanson

has since authored and co-authored 23 books. He was twice given the Utah Governor’s Award for the Arts. From 1989 to 2007, he consulted for a Minneapolis client and brought 24,000 Russian works of art to America and also built the SMA’s Russian art collection. The Springville Museum of Art hired him to be its director in August of 1980, where he served with distinction for 32 years before retiring in August of 2012. During his tenure, he helped articulate the museum’s mission/ vision, supporting objectives and standards. He quadrupled the size of the permanent art collection (mostly of Utah and Soviet realist art), doubled the size of the facilities with a new wing and sculpture garden, and increased the staff and overall professionalism. Being its director was one of the greatest honors of his life.

In 2012, he retired to write books on art, theology and politics and to be with his family as much as possible. He continues to volunteer at the Springville Museum of Art and to consult for the world’s major auction houses and 19th century European and Soviet art collectors. He loves to work with his church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), travel with family and friends, work with his fruit trees and, of course, watch BYU football.

2025 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Charles Nackos

Charles James Nackos and his twin brother Lou were born on May 14, 1938, in Salt Lake City. Their parents, James and Tena Nackos, were secondgeneration children of immigrants. His dad was Greek and his mother was Bulgarian. His first home was a converted boxcar, and he and Lou were so small that their beds were shoe boxes. Charles has six brothers and sisters. During his younger years, his family lived in various cities in Utah, Oregon, Washington and California. In his teens, his family moved to Oakland, California, where they owned and ran a barbecue restaurant. He attended Fremont High School and participated in gymnastics, journalism and drama. Upon graduation, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern Mexico Mission for two and a half years. Within weeks of returning to the United States, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served six months of active duty at Base Alameda in California and would serve six and a half years in the Coast Guard reserves. During that time, he attended Brigham Young University, where he acted in plays and was active in the pep club on campus known as the Young Men. He graduated with a degree in communications and a lifelong love of BYU sports.

Charles met his wife-to-be, Lela Rae

Perkins (from East Carbon, Utah), while living and working in Costa Mesa, California. They were married in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1967. After giving birth to their daughter in California, they settled in Utah, where they added five more boys. They eventually moved to Springville in 1972, where Charles has lived ever since. His youngest son, Jonathan, passed away in a car wreck in Hobble Creek Canyon in 1994, and his wife passed away from cancer in 1995. His living children are Jennifer (Spencer) Nelson, James (Tina) Nackos, Jason (Dalia) Nackos, Jared Nackos and Jeffrey (Jamie) Nackos. He has 21 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren with another on the way.

Charles spent the majority of his career in sales and merchandising. He worked for Howard Ruff at his company, the Jefferson Institute, for several years, organizing seminars nationwide. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he coowned a travel business and logged thousands of miles of travel throughout the country. When the 9/11 attacks hit, it negatively affected the company to the point that they had to close the business.

At 86 years old, he still works five days a week selling manufactured homes at Elite Housing in Springville. His alltime favorite job was as a substitute teacher in the Springville and Mapleton

schools, where he was known as Mr. Nachos (a play on his last name). He substitute-taught classes for 12 years and impacted the lives of many with his humor and love for the students. Since Lela’s passing, he has dedicated much of his spare time to serving his family, neighbors and church. He has given countless hours of service to neighbors doing yard work and other chores. Although his age and a stroke in 2020 have limited his ability to provide physical labor, he still finds ways to serve. His infectious personality has touched the lives of many in our community for the past 53 years.

Dale Peterson Auto Body

Dale Peterson Auto Body, a longtime Springville business, has been selected by the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce as the 2025 Business of the Year.

In 1978, with 28 years of experience in the auto collision repair business, Dale Peterson decided to start his own business. His knowledge and substantial skills made him one of the most trusted collision repairmen in Utah County.  This was the beginning of Dale Peterson Body Shop in Springville.

Working side by side, Dale and his son, Tad, built the business’s first small building at 309 W. 900 North in Springville. The business continues to operate there to this day.  There have been many additions made to the building throughout the years as the business continued to grow.

Dale taught Tad from the beginning about the importance of commitment to high-quality work and customer satisfaction. Every vehicle needed to be as important to them as it was to its owner; their work has the Peterson name on it.

After many years of working alongside family and serving his community, Dale passed away Nov. 10, 2024, at the age of 91. He was at the shop nearly every day until only 12 days before his passing. He loved to visit with his family and the customers daily.

Tad, his wife, Amy, and their children — Derek, Travis, Braden and Carmen — continue with the same principles

of honesty, hard work, quality craftsmanship and commitment to their customers and each other. The business has provided an opportunity for the family to work together; it has been a true blessing in all of their lives.

Dale Peterson Auto Body provides quality collision repair services. It is I-Car certified in welding, steel sectioning and aluminum repairs as well as OEM approved for repair procedures, Ford certified for aluminum repairs and UDOT certified for towing with an impound yard.

It is a Better Business Bureau A+

credited business and a member of the National Federation of Independent Business. It has been a member of the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce almost since the chamber’s beginning.

The family members would like to express their appreciation for the opportunity of being part of the wonderful Springville/Mapleton community as a family and as business owners. They are extremely grateful for the community’s continued support in the growing of their business and especially for friendships forged.

101ST ANNUAL SPRING SALON

Through July 5

The 101st annual Spring Salon, an art exhibit showcasing the diversity and quality of contemporary Utah art, is now open at the Springville Museum of Art.

The Spring Salon is one of the longest-running art shows in the state of Utah. It is a juried exhibition featuring pieces by Utah artists from many backgrounds. The pieces are created using a wide variety of mediums.

The salon will remain on exhibit through July 5 at the museum, located at 126 E. 400 South in Springville.

The museum is open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. The museum is closed Sundays and holidays (except for special events).

For more information about the Spring Salon or other events and exhibits at the museum, visit smofa.org.

The Spring Salon was first held in 1922. It was begun by students and teachers at Springville High School who wanted to exhibit and promote original artwork. The salon has been held annually since that time except during World War II when fuel and other goods were rationed nationwide.

The salon is open to all Utah artists working in any media. Each artist may submit up to two works of art created within the last three years. Works over three years old are not eligible.

Each year, hundreds of art works

are submitted for consideration, with around 250 works accepted for display as part of the Salon.

The entrants to the exhibit come from many backgrounds. There are many professional artists who enter their art for consideration, but many others are amateurs. There is a wide variety of art mediums including oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, traditional sculpture, mixed media and assemblage sculpture, photography and digital media. Overall, the exhibit showcases the diversity and quality of contemporary Utah art.

One past tradition of the Spring Salon was the Penny Vote. Early in the history of the show, contestants for Art Queen from the high school received votes through pennies that were cast into a box. The contestant with the most pennies was selected as the Art Queen and the money went toward new art purchases for the museum.

EYE SPY PHOTO CONTEST

June 9 -14

How well do you know Springville?

Those who think they’re familiar with every aspect of this community may have a chance of winning an Amazon gift card through the Art City Days Eye Spy Photo Contest.

Photos of 20 different locations or objects in Springville will be posted online at springville.org/art-city-days/

eye-spy on Monday, June 9, at 9 a.m..

The catch is that only a very small portion of the location, object or sign will be shown. It’s then your job to figure out where each picture was taken and take a bigger picture of the location or object. This year, there will be two Eye Spy Photo Hunt areas - a city-wide hunt and an easier one just at

Memorial Park.

Rules and instructions are as follows:

• Only a very small portion of each location is shown, so figure out where the picture was taken and take a bigger photo of the entire location, object or sign.

• Submit a complete list of answers via email to artcitydays@springville.org or deliver it to Springville Recreation at 443 S. 200 East.

• Get your entry in quickly! The first individual or group that that gets the most correct answers will win a $50 Amazon gift card and a gift basket of Springville Swag.

• In case of a tie, the person/group that submitted their entry first will be declared the winner.

The contest will run through June 14 or until a winner is declared. Visit springville.org/art-city-days for more information.

MEDALLION

Springville residents will be challenged to become super sleuths and use clues to find a special hidden item as part of the Art City Days Medallion Treasure Hunt.

Each day from Monday, June 9, through Thursday, June 12, at 9 a.m., a single clue will be revealed at springville.org/art-city-days/ medallion that will lead searchers to a special Springville medallion hidden somewhere in the community.

Each clue will be somewhat cryptic, so it will require deductive thinking to put each part together and find the medallion.

In past years, the medallion has been found out in the open, but it also has been found inside a public building. There will be a message on the medallion giving specific instructions to the person or group that finds it, which could result in them winning valuable prizes, including a $50 Amazon gift card and a gift basket full of Springville Swag.

After the four days of clues, a final clue may be released on Friday, June 13, at 9 a.m. if the medallion hasn’t been found by then.

Only one person will know where the medallion is hidden, so peppering city employees with questions will do you no good. Be very specific in your search as you get closer to finding the medallion, but, most of all, have fun!

NEW! MINI MEDALLION HUNT

New this year is a Daily Mini Treasure Hunt. This hunt is a smaller, easier-tosolve riddle meant to be solvable in just a couple hours.

There will be a Daily Mini Treasure Hunt riddle also released each morning

during the Medallion Treasure Hunt. To participate in the Mini Treasure Hunt, solve the clue, find the treasure and take your photo with it. Then return it to its hiding place so that others can find it all day or all week long.

Then, submit your photo via email to artcitydays@springville.org. The first individual or group that submits a

photo each day will be awarded a prize.

Another prize will be awarded to the individual or groups that submits photos of all five treasures in the fastest total cumulative time.

Other prizes may be awarded to individuals or groups who submit evidence of all five treasures, through random selection, so don’t give up!
