SANTAQUIN MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Hello and welcome to all who are planning to return to Santaquin Orchard Days in 2024. Even through the pain of construction, I thank you for supporting the rodeos, parades, auto shows and other fun events we have planned as part of this year’s festivities.

I enjoy the opportunity to meet new people, catch up with familiar faces and call each member of the com munity a friend. I look forward to the noise of construction being eclipsed by families enjoying the many activi ties Orchard Days has to offer.

Please be conscientious of your neighbors and how these fireworks may affect them. Support each other and enjoy each other as we ooh and ahh at the marvelous spectacle in the sky. We are grateful for our small town

young and not-so-young, residents and visitors, and everyone in between — to enjoy what we call home here in Santaquin. I hope that enjoyment is to be had and lasting memories are made while you join us at Orchard

Don’t miss the Little Buck-A-Roo Rodeo presented on the opening day of Orchards Days. It is the largest Little Buck-A-Roo in the state of Utah, with contestants and families coming from all over the state to take part. Santaquin’s award-winning RMPRA rodeo won yet another “Rodeo of the Year” award last year, adding to the many prior years when we took home the win. We have set the bar high, and other cities are looking to us to see how it’s done.

After each rodeo, everyone looks to the skies from their blankets, chairs or even back porches to watch the best fireworks presentation of the summer.

MISS SANTAQUIN ROYALTY

Miss Santaquin

I have felt beyond grateful for every memory I’ve been able to create through my opportunity of being Miss Santaquin. It’s been an incredible experience that has allowed me to grow in all aspects of my life, whether that’s being able to articulate my thoughts clearly to communicate with others, learning how to take charge and make things happen, or simply be a part of what our town has to offer.

Santaquin holds a special place in my heart because of the love I have for our community. Those who live here always make sure to stand by one another through the good and the bad, and that’s something that I deeply admire. I respect the immense amount of kindness everyone has shown to me throughout my yearlong reign.

As Miss Santaquin, I’ve been able to promote my platform “Pushing Past the Limits; 1% is All You Need.” This platform has been very important to me, and for that reason I feel blessed to have shared it with those in our community. I’ve been able to teach others the importance of learning how to have a positive growth mindset and about creating healthy habits such as gratitude, affirmations and kindness. I love when I can help others push past their limits and out of their comfort zones to achieve their goals.

I’ve been able to teach about my platform through creating vision boards and giving out gratitude journals at Santaquin Elementary as well as teaching at Apple Valley Elementary during their kindness week. I hope to have made a lasting impact on teaching the students how to change their mindsets in a way that will help empower our youth to strive for positivity in their daily lives. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the help of my attendants who never fail to support me and inspire me each day. Now let me tell you about a few of

my favorite memories from this year. The Fire Prevention Open House was unique and Lydia and I were welcomed with open arms and got to spend time with our local heroes. I loved every story time I had the chance to attend with some of the most amazing librarians alongside the sweetest children. The city recreation dances put on by Shauna Jo Eves and Lindsay Scott were a complete party, and I admire their dedication to making the events as perfect as can be. I can’t forget my time playing bingo at the Seasons of Santaquin where I was able to make genuine connections and have deep conversations. There are many more events I enjoyed, but what I loved most were the people I was able to meet and stories I was able to hear.

In my free time I enjoy dancing, traveling the world and spending quality time with those in my life. I just graduated from Payson High School and am excited to see where life takes me. I’m the daughter of Nicole and Cory Crabb and have been able to live in Santaquin my whole life. I’m so grateful I’ve had the chance to serve those in our community this year as Miss Santaquin.

First Attendant Lydia Payne

Lydia Payne is the daughter of Diane and Richard Payne. Lydia has lived in Santaquin her whole life and loves being able to call this amazing community her hometown. Lydia graduated from Payson High School with high honors in 2023. She was one of the captains of the drill team during her senior year. She is currently attending Utah Valley University and is completing the prerequisites for nursing.

When Lydia isn’t busy with work or school, she loves finding new creative things to try. She also loves being outdoors and hiking. Lydia is planning on attending MTECH this fall to get her MA certification.

Second Attendant Braelyn Newbury

Second Attendant Braelyn Newbury is the daughter of Nate Newbury, Shauna Marchbanks and Jordan Marchbanks. She has lived in Santaquin for 6 years and graduated from Payson High School in 2023. She attended her first year of college at Southern Utah University where she is studying in the aviation program. Some of Braelyn’s favorite hobbies include playing pickleball, crocheting tiny animals, singing in her car and doing almost anything that is adventurous.

Braelyn has done lots of service as the second attendant this year. From talent show auditions to masquerade balls, she really has done it all! One of her favorite activities this year was helping with the Tea Party that Miss Santaquin hosted. She loves helping out the kids and seeing them show off their creative talents. Braelyn has loved serving the community this year and is excited for what the new year will bring.

Members of the 2023 Miss Santaquin Royalty are, from left: Second Attendant Braelyn Newbury, Miss Santaquin Chloe Crabb and First Attendant Lydia Payne.

PARADE GRAND MARSHALS

David & Lynda Broadbent

David and Lynda Broadbent will serve as the grand marshals of the 2024 Orchard Days Grand Parade. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The Broadbents are honored to be selected as this year’s grand marshals. Both were born and raised in Santaquin as descendants of four generations of hardworking Santaquin families who built the foundation of our great city.

David’s grandfather Bill Broadbent, whom David lived with as a youngster, was Santaquin’s mayor in the early 1950s, serving faithfully for eight years. During his service, he purchased a 1951 GMC pump and roll fire engine for the fire department.

David credits his grandfather for teaching him about serving and loving this community and has tried to implement those teachings throughout his life by serving with recreation programs, library fundraising projects and Orchard Days events. David’s professional work life involved the printing industry for the first part of his career. During the past 20-plus years, he has worked in the finance and real estate business.

Lynda also had a great example of community service and support in her father, who served as a city councilman for many years. Throughout her 48 years of teaching piano, she has instructed more than 500 young people. She continues to teach piano and serve others throughout the city with her talents.

Working alongside Craig Evans, Lynda started the Santaquin Piano Recital in 1986 to help residents share their talents and offer a cultural experience to the community. She was also a guiding strength behind the city’s “Sounds of

Summer” program.

Lynda served on the city’s Library Board during the period when the library was established in its current building. Through her contacts and efforts, she was able to locate a donor for the beautiful stained-glass window we all enjoy.

David and Lynda have five wonderful children and several grandchildren, some of whom live in Santaquin. The Broadbents’ love for Santaquin is evident as they continue to serve within the city and within their faith. They are well known and loved for this service. It is an honor to recognize David and Lynda Broadbent as grand marshals for the 2024 Orchard Days Grand Parade.

OPENING CEREMONY & FLAG RAISING

Santaquin’s mayor and city council will host a flag-raising ceremony officially opening the 2024 Orchard Days celebration on Saturday, July 27, at the Santaquin City Hall, 110 S. Center Street. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

During the ceremony, City Councilmember, Art Adcock will honor Santaquin resident Kathleen Greenhalgh Crook.

Kathleen Greenhalgh Crook was born in 1939 and raised in a log home on Fourth East behind her grandparent’s farm. Kathleen attended junior high school in Santaquin and graduated from Payson High School. At 7 years old, she went to the new movie “The Wizard of Oz” with some friends and her future husband, James Nyles Crook.

She and James married in 1966 and had six children, who were raised in Santaquin. She now has 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Throughout Kathleen’s youth, she

enjoyed riding horses with her dad and sewing. She did her share of babysitting, picking raspberries, cleaning homes, selling gift card door to door and gathering bottles for money. Then, as a young mother, she sold Tupperware for several years and was the top performer in the area.

As a teenager, she would give tribute speeches for different events, give readings for the DUP and sing for groups with her sister and dad.

Kathleen has enjoyed sewing her entire life and has made many quilts from scraps of fabric for family and friends, including quilts for each of her grandchildren. She’s also enjoyed keeping scrapbooks for her children as they grew. She and James ran the museum store in the Chieftain Museum for a time, and she’s also helped with city parades and events. Her mother is credited with naming Squash Head Park on Main Street.

Kathleen and James had the oppor-

Kathleen is a very service-oriented person and is always looking for a way to help others. She is a wonderful woman who is a cherished resident of Santaquin and a beloved member of her family. It is a pleasure to recognize her as the 2024 Orchard Days Flag Ceremony Honoree.

PRE-RODEO CONCERTS

KATIE MATHEWS

Katie Mathews grew up in Northern Utah and began singing professionally at the age of 9, with her first job at the Utah Festival Opera. She was heavily involved with several operas and musicals until she started singing what was in her heart: country music.

With influences ranging from grassroots country to rock and roll, she began with covering the music of Patsy Cline, Tina Turner and Elton John.

Mathews quickly gained local recognition after winning the county fair Talent Find at the age of 12, and she began touring with Ty Herndon and SheDaisy at the age of 15. She moved to Nashville after high school, where she would write and perform daily. She has opened for artists such as Craig Campbell, David Osmond, Billy Dean, Chely Wright and Granger Smith.

Mathews recently recorded an EP titled “Not Because You’re Lonely,” a

beautifully written piece that proves her talent not only as a singer but as a writer as well. Her first single was written by CJ Solar, a notable writer and performer himself. Mathews has had the opportunity to perform with Solar and looks forward to collaborating with him more in the future as well as with other artists.

Her stage performances display a seasoned artist and the many years she has spent on the stage. Performing is her “sixth sense,” and this “girl next door” hopes you give her music a listen with an open heart.
